Chairman's Award at Championship

Does anyone know how the Chairman's Award at the Championship is different from those of regionals Chairman's Award processes? Or is it just a repeat of what we did in the regional, albeit against the other regional Chairman's winners?

This is the first year my team's heading out to the Championship, and we're trying not to run into any unwanted surprises/hitches.

The process is very similar.

All of the qualifying teams will be assigned a time to present on Friday. Usually they assignments are in team number order, and there are usually two rooms - half the teams present in each room.

The same basic guidelines and rules apply for your presentation time.

You don't have to give the same presentation again, you can change it, add materials, use different props, etc.

Compared to regional Chairman's...it's basically the same thing, only with a lot more teams to compete against :/

A list of interview times comes out around Thursday lunch (or it did last year) and then you can switch around with other teams, if necessary. As previously stated, two interview rooms--half the teams to one, half to the other. But as always, judges will walk around and stop to talk to you et al.

You can do the same presentation (funny story--one of the judges at Championships had been one of our regional Chairman's judges so she heard the same thing twice in one year...awkward :rolleyes:) or you can change it, it's entirely up to you.

It really is similar to regional Chairman's, just on a bigger scale.

One of our judges at during the interview at regionals told us the clock starts the moment you walk in the door. At the regional, we had shaken the judges' hands and handed them a booklet of information before we began. If those 30s-60s or so was included in our time, we would have certainly gone over the 5min limit.

How strict is the timing for the CCA? Does time start the moment you step inside, and will you be cut off exactly at 300 seconds into the presentation? Our uncertainty about this is making us nervous about our 4:45 presentation... :o

Last year, I remember the clock starting as soon as we got in the room. When we presented at Oregon, the judges were the one's keeping track of time. At Champs, I recall a volunteer running the clock, and notifying the judges when time was up. They were pretty strick about the time allowed. There are also more judges in the room, somewhere along the lines of 5-7, as opposed to 3. We ended up doing brief introductions, and saved handshakes for the end after time had been called. Other than that, it was a very similar presentation. The main difference is that there are more eyes to make contact with.

I believe the clock starts when your presentation team enters the room. If you plan on that being the case, you will be in good shape.

When we presented at champs in '06 the clock started when we started talking, not when we entered the room. There is a Judges Assistant who sits outside the door and keeps time, I would recommend asking the Judge Assistant outside the door prior to your presentation and plan for either way.

The regional setting seems to be a lot more relaxed when doing the presentation. Judges tend to allow you a minute to get everything settled. At the Championships the timer starts the moment you walk in the door, and they will cut you off the moment you hit 5 minutes. Go in prepared to start immediately.

Look, my best advice here is just relax! If you thought your RCA presentation was flawless, amazing, and couldn't have gone any better, then do that presentation again. If you feel like you forgot something or you now have more to add to your team's repertoire then do it. This presentation is what you make of it and every team is different and will go about it in different ways. That's just my $0.02. Best of luck to all the teams competing for the CCA, I can not wait to see who will being joining 103 and all the other AMAZING teams in the Hall of Fame! :)

Being prepared for your 5 minutes to start upon entering the room is your best approach to the time problem. If you need to set up something, then use the time wisely. Have one member greet the judges, shake hands, and hand out materials while another member does the media or poster setup. Use every moment towards your ultimate goal.
We did the exact same presentation locally and at the Championship. The only difference was that in the Q & A portion the kids tended to mention projects of local interest at the regional and mentioned more projects of global interest at the Championship. Very slight differences in approach.

Another bit of advice is to find the difficult balance point between personal stories and hard numbers. Both are important to the judges.
