View Full Version : CD Users Personality Test

Recently in my psych class, we were all asked to take a personality test. After reviewing my results, and being amazed at their accuracy, it got me thinking.

1. Given the accuracy of the results, I am going to propose having my teammates take this test, with the hopes that the results would help the team be run more effectively
2. I'm curious to see where the members of CD fall in the category.

So my challenge to you all is to take the test (it'll take 10-15 mins max), and post/discuss your results here. Personally I was an ENTJ, or Fieldmarshal personality. Test link is below. After you "Score it", click the link to the Keirsey personality assessment page.

The test is actually called a Myers-Briggs test.

I believe this is based on the offical test. I may be getting my personality tests mixed up, but I think you need to have certain training to score the offical one.

It definitely has its issues, and anyone can trick it or change their behavior and switch their personality. Never-the-less it's still pretty interesting.

I'm the first "Feel" instead of "Think" on this thread... I'm not surprised because I'm going to be going in to Music for college next fall and engineering easily burns me out. I've served most of my time with my team as a leader/management, which I was better at than engineering...

I hate to say it, but Wikipedia does a great job. Look for the article on MBTI (whether or not it's an official test, the results absolutely mimic those of Myers-Briggs Testing).

I'm an INFJ, though there's small bits of other things..

When I was young my boss fell in love with this test and decided a certain personality type would be the only kind he would hire. It didn't matter that I was his best tech and didn't fit the desired profile at all, somebody at some seminar sold him on the idea.

Fat forward three years later and we ended up with a very boring group of people with no dynamic at all. Nobody was fit for leadership (except for me and another guy who was there pre-test.) The group was practically dysfunctional and took a long time to be rebuilt.

It was a interesting picture of what happens when a company relies on this kind of test too much.

That sounds like a poor application of the results. You can use the results for a hire, but it should facilitate a more diverse group, not one that is theoretically more efficient.

Also, I'm INTP. I think one time I got picked out as an INFP, but mostly I'm INTP.

I've never really felt these told me anything I didn't already know. It's also not fully descriptive of me, because of the aforementioned binary nature, and that I'm perfectly happy with public speaking but can't stand parties and the like, throwing the results due to conflicting one of its area's. Just my opinion.

I'm also an INTJ, both on this mini-test and a real Myers-Briggs test. And it is not surprising that many CD folks are INTJ and ENTJ.

Is Myers-Briggs perfect? No. There are several similar systems as well, and none of them are perfect either. But a careful study and some deep thought can give one a lot of insight into themselves, and really change the way you manage your life.

For example, as an INTJ, I know that I don't like sudden changes of plans: Instead, either following the plan and adjusting or allowing some time (minutes to hours) to "chew on" changes really works well for me. My boss knows it too, so when they need my best, they allow time for me to process changes.

Those who don't know me, I explain it to them so they don't think my inaction (or more accurately delayed reaction) means I don't care. In fact, I just need to plan what to do, otherwise I can't do it well.

I started doing robotics heavily about 18 months ago, after stepping into a leadership role. That same time when I took this test in class, I was ESFJ, all of them within 30% (Sensing, the one that changed, was at 3%). Interesting how I have changed over the last year and a half.

Don, what is interesting is that INTJ's are supposed to be the rarest of personality types. I agree, given the field, it isn't much of surprise that the under 5% in the rest of the world is overrepresented on CD.

For the record, I am INTJ as well.

Hmm.... I definitely expected to see many rationalists among the CD community. I'm a bit surprised to see a few Idealists as well, but am actually quite surprised by not seeing as many artists. I thought with FIRST's attraction to very creative and unique people, CD's users might fit that profile.

Keep the results coming! Very interesting indeed.

It might not be that FIRST is dominated by what is supposed to be 2-5% of the population, but that those are the people who flock to CD the most out of all the FIRST people. Then again, maybe not...

It was a interesting picture of what happens when a company relies on this kind of test too much.

When they taught us about Meyers-Briggs in Professional Development I, it came with the caveat that actually using it to make choices was "outside of the scope" of the test. I couldn't get the leadership TA to give me a straight answer as to what its use was other than to get to know yourself better.

They stressed that Meyers-Briggs reveals preference not skill. For example, someone who is Introverted is not necessarily shy, or even quiet. What it does mean is that to recharge at the end of the day they would prefer a few quiet minutes alone or in a small group as opposed to heading out to dinner with a large group of people they didn't know well.

I am INTP. You will see that there is a lot less diversity here than in the general population. At RPI every one takes this as part of Introduction to Engineering Design. We found very little diversity in our types, people who thought they were obviously extroverts or feelers were often just moderate introverts and thinkers (two traits that are very dominant in science/engineering).

Also for those of you questioning the classification of Introvert/Extrovert it is not necessarily whether you prefer to be alone or to be in groups. It is more which is more energy draining. An introvert can work extremely well in groups, be a great public speaker and can come across as an outgoing person. The real differentiator is when you are looking to recover and relax which do you prefer, going out to a party/hanging out in a public area, or doing something alone/ spending time with one or two friends.

Especially for my fellow team members I offer this description of the INTP, or "Architect", personality type, by way of an apology:
Architects regard all discussions as a search for understanding, and believe their function is to eliminate inconsistencies, which can make communication with them an uncomfortable experience for many.
