FRC Slideshow: Every Robot 2012

With less than two weeks until the start of the 2012 FRC season, FRC Designs is presenting a challenge to all FRC Teams:

Make a commitment to take pictures of robots for the upcoming events in the 2012 FRC Season.

Last year, Bryan Culver (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/member.php?u=36413) (Team #33) presented this idea in this Chief Delphi thread (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=96341). For the upcoming year, Bryan connected with FRC Designs to enhance this project.

Three Requirements:

1: You must commit to an entire event. Feel free to share the workload over multiple people, just ensure that you get at least one picture of every robot. This ensures that all robot get photographed. Only full competition requirements will be accepted.

2: Follow the picture requirements. To ensure picture quality every robot must be photographed while in its pit facing the aisle without people working on it. The picture must be taken diagonally showing the front and left sides of the robot. Every picture must be clear, (1024X768 MAXIMUM), and clearly show the robot's number on both the front and left bumper. This is a lot less complicated than it sounds and most cameras can shoot much higher quality pictures then 800x600. (Example photo attached below).

3: Follow the submission requirements. When your photos are sent to me they must be a .jpg file extension. The picture must be called ####.jpg where #### is the team number. (ex: 33.jpg) If you are sending multiple photos of the same robot, label pictures after the first with lowercase letters starting with "b". (ex: 33b.jpg ; 33c.jpg etc) This allows me to organize all the files easily instead of personally going through over 1000 files organizing, renaming, and changing the file extension so they all match. Follow the FRC Design submission page to contact the website (http://www.frc-designs.com/html/Submit_Design.html).

Disclaimer: Photos will not be posted until World Championships

Just as a rule of thumb - ask each team about posting their robot's picture online before you take the picture. Not all teams (they have their reasons) appreciate it when pictures of their robots are online for all to see, even after ship day.

I understand why teams don't want their robot's picture posted online, but if your at a public event (especially if its webcasted like the majority of regionals are), I don't think you can be upset if someone takes your robots picture and posts it online. I believe events have signs that say by walking into the venue, you agree to letting FIRST use pictures of yourself. I think this should apply to your robot as well

I'm 98% sure I can handle Wisconsin and Boilermaker.

John, like I said, teams have their own reasons. I have come across teams that ask not to, so it should be a common courtesy to let the team know where their robot's pictures will be posted.

I'm not sure if this pertains to teams robots, but when a student signs up in STIMS they agree that pictures can be taken of them. Not sure if that's all it states but if you are at a public event you can take pictures and post them to the web.

Akash, although I quoted you, that wasn't directed at you. I am also aware that some teams don't like to have picture of their robot online for various reasons. Last year I was a little taken back when another team's robot showcase video had our robot in the background at a pre-ship scrimmage, so I understand the sentament. I just think its a little much to ask that no one takes a picture of your robot at a public event that is likely already webcasted. Just my opinion.

Also not directed at anyone, but i agree. This is a robotics competition, but its also a FIRST Organization. It should not be a big deal that a team's robot is put somewhere on the web. We are supposed to be faithful in the ideals of Gracious Professionalism, are we not?

Matt may need to correct me on this but as far as I am aware these pictures will not be available for viewing until at least after the World Championship. I fully understand any team's desire to keep there robot a secret for the competition season.

In any case, I attached another example picture because I thought that explaination was a little fuzzy. We're just looking for a diagionally taken picture with the team number clearly visable on the bumper without people working on it. Also, the picture needs tp be taken portrait style. (tall and skinny) Finally, I think Matt forgot to impose the MINIMUM picture size: (800x600).

Thanks guys

If I may provide some insight here, I made a comment to Akash while we were chatting about this thread. 816 is planning to do a closed to the public build season this year (first in quite some time) as well as not posting Pictures of their robot until sometime after the MAR CMP. Some of the members are concerned with the copying of our machine and/or it's components from event to event - especially with the new District System this year. We learned First hand in 2011 that it is possible to rebuild more than 50% of a machine in under 6 hours with a proper game plan.

I guess we really don't have any control over what others do, though I would suggest that you hold off on posting any sort of photographic database until the week or two leading up to the CMP. At that point all of the secrets are, or at least should be, out.

A good idea would be to ask everyone in the pits about taking pictures of their robot before hand, and then have pit admin announce that the robots should be facing the aisles right before lunch break on Friday, and then go about taking pictures during Friday lunch break.

This is because I believe that Friday lunch break would probably have robots still in a great condition, and would not interfere with people performing miracles in the pits.

I did not mean to cause this much controversy. We are merely trying to create a database of robot photos. Let me know what you think. Thanks!

This is great! No rush, this thread will be open for commitments until build season concludes. (although, we would like to have all of the events taken care off well before that.)

When you're sure, simply post what event(s) you will be photographing and what name you would like to be credited under. (ex: real name, CD name, team name, etc)

Hey, 1st Official commitment!

In order to keep this organized I will be updating the thread similarly to the way Fantasy FIRST does: After the event you commit to I will put your "credit name" by which we will credit you for your photos (red) followed by the CD username of the poster which will be used to send updates or friendly reminders to you (blue) I don't expect to PM often but its a good thing to be able to do if we need to.

Last season @ FLR 2056 assigned a pair of kids to stand at the front of the queing area and take pictures of robots going to the field. They wanted pictures of robots as they would look during competition and as long as they stayed out of the way of the traffic flow I didn't mind them. This would actually probably be the best way to get pictures of robots during the season.

I've talked to our Media sub-division, and we (1676) will be able to photograph Rutgers, NYC, and Mt. Olive. If we qualify, we could also potentially do the MAR Championships. :D

Suggestion on naming of the pictures:

Team 1
0001.jpg

Team 33
0033.jpg

Team 469
0469.jpg

Team 2337
2337.jpg

This would allow for the pictures to be in one folder and listed in numerical order. They you can add alpha characters at the end to show multiple versions.

What happens when a robot is at multiple competitions and there are multiple pictures taken and sent to you, the file names would be the same if the person who sends it in doesn't know that their is already a picture of it. My suggestion is to give a list to the people assigned to taking the pictures that shows what teams they need to photograph at that competition.

Due to the fact that robots are constantly changing, it may be better to have a picture of every robot at every regional (even if its redundant in some cases). Perhaps have us save the pictures in a folder with the title of the event on it?
From there, you can use a program to change the name of all the images in the folder based on how you decide to sort them.

For instance:

Regional B takes place on week 2, Regional A takes place on week 1.
team 0001 is attending both regionals.
You get 0001.jpg in regional A's folder and add a "w1" to the end of it.
Then you take that 0001.jpg in regional B's folder and add a "w2" to the end of it.
At the end, simply combine all of the folders and have yourself one happy family.

*Where "you" is the program.

This is perfectly fine. We don't really care where you photograph them just so long as the requirements are met. (diagional, clear, showing a bumper number, etc.) If you think that you can best take the photos in the queing line then by all means please do so. :]

Suggestion on naming of the pictures:
Team 1
0001.jpg
Team 33
0033.jpg

This is pretty much what we are already doing. The extra zeros don't effect the picture order so I thought that it would be easier to exclude them. I quoted the origional post for you below.

My suggestion is to give a list to the people assigned to taking the pictures that shows what teams they need to photograph at that competition.

Then multiple photos with the same name will be sent in. It's not a very big deal and allows us to take the best photo of said team's robot for the website. Under the current system, if you label your files properly before you send them then pictures of the same robot will be next to each other in the recieving file holding all of the pictures. So yes, we still want you to photograph all the robots at an event even if they have competed previously.

I've talked to our Media sub-division, and we (1676) will be able to photograph Rutgers, NYC, and Mt. Olive. If we qualify, we could also potentially do the MAR Championships. :D

I have faith that you will qualify so I took the liberty of adding you for the MAR Championship as well

GOFIRST (or members of the teams we work with) will take the Twin Cities, 10,000 Lakes and North Star Regionals. Cite us as GOFIRST.

Where/how do we submit the photos?

Is there a quarter handout that could be created so the photographers can give that to the teams at the regionals? This would also help spread the word about the database.

Yes Steve, I will take photos of the team at Chesapeake and DC (as a member of the RoboBees)
I will also commit to photos at the Virginia Regional as well.
If HokieGaurd (401) gets off the waitlist for the NC or Smokey Mountain Regionals I will have those covered as well. That is an IF though.
Thank you, If you end up being able to photograph NC and/or Smokey Mountain please just post an update in this thread.:]

I'm glad that you like the idea and that GOFIRST will participate. By the time the competition season starts there will be way to submit your photos on www.frc-designs.com We will look into creating a handout, thats a really great idea!

Bryan - is there anyway to update the original post with events covered?

This would help people in the future find what events need to be covered easier than going through the thread.

PS - I know you are not the original poster, but maybe you guys could coordinate a bit.

Honestly, I don't think so. After a day or so you loose the ability to edit a post which is unfortunate because I know this list is very long. On the plus side you can just skip to the end of the thread to find the most up-to-date version of the list so it's not too too irritating.

Regards, Bryan

Edit: @Grim Tuesday: Sure, having multiple people doing the same regional cuts down on work if you decide to collaborate, or gives us more photos to pick from ultimatly allowing for a better final product. I'll put you on the list the next time I update it.

I understand that many of teams will be 'repeats' from competition to competition - as much of the recent discussion shows.

However, I think it would be interesting to see the progression of teams from beginning to end of the year. This being said, I would keep Michigan and MAR Championships, and add Championship Divisions back to the list.

Hello CD!

As we come into Week 3 in the build season I thought that it would be appropriate to revive this thread. We would love to have as many regionals/districts photographed this year as possible. If you, someone you know, or your team is able and willing to photograph robots at your respective events please consider commiting to this project.

Thanks and Happy Week 3!

Our team usually takes pictures of robots at our events for our scouting meeting on friday night anyway, so I can talk to my media team about covering the Orlando and SoFlo regionals. I'm not 100% yet only because we need to figure out what everyone will be doing at competition, but if you send me a PM at/toward the end of build season I could give you a yes or no. (But it'll probably be a yes)

I'll put in a Maybe for Roboteknix (2865) covering the Week 6 Spokane Regional.

Basically, I can do it if I head scouting again this year, but if by some miracle I make it onto Drive Team, then I'll be busy. So 90% sure I can do it. I'll know for certain after ship day.

I'm glad this photo gallery is happening this year.

Reminds me of http://web.archive.org/web/20080114042330/http://www.firstrobotics.net/

On the issue of "hiding" your robot as mentioned in the earlier posts on this thread I have a comment or 2. While I appreciate & somewhat respect the fact that a team doesn't want a pic of their robot posted online, I have to disagree completely with the idea of not allowing anyone to do that due to a realistic point of view.

In my opinion as soon as you attend your first competition, your robot is "public" and there will be pics taken of it. This is not limited to just an overall pic, but close-ups of effective, & cool designs, & sweet mechanisms.
We do this very thing in our scouting efforts. If a team didn't allow a pic of their robot to be taken, then it limits their public relations with other teams, & hinders partnership in the elimination matches if we were in the role of being able to pick a team.

We on Team 237 highly ENCOURAGE pictures of our robots & any mechanisms to be taken at events as well as ask us questions about them. We usually release a stock image of our completed robot at the time of shipping as well - but not before unless it's a teaser pic during week 1-6.

There is absolutely no harm in people using our ideas on their robots in our opinion.

The thought process behind not allowing pics to be taken/posted until the end of the season to me personally is ridiculous.

(Sorry Dustin & Akash, I gotta disagree with you both on this issue...) :yikes:

Update - Team 2865 Roboteknix can definitely do the Spokane Regional in Week 6. If I'm on drive team this year, our team captain Mayde (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/member.php?u=36170) promised she'd take pictures for me, and I'll still resize/edit/name the files correctly before submitting them.

Hey, I'm glad you like the idea and happen to agree with you. However, because we would like to get a photo of every robot and every team may not agree with our line of thinking it is much simpler to unveil the photographs around the World Championship time so as to avoid any conflicts. In any case, it was never our plan to have these pictures publicly available during the season.

Hey everyone,

With now less then two weeks until build season we have only 26 competions that are not accounted for (and this is counting the World Championship divisions!) Still, 26 competions is quite a lot of missed robots, if anyone would like to help out photographing a competion it would be much appreciated.

Best of luck as we all come into the home stretch of build season.
Thanks, Bryan

GO FIRST is sending a contingent of volunteers to the LA Regional, so we can help with the photos there.

Potentially the same for Wisconsin, but that's a maybe as of now.

I made a video of last year's 868 pictures. It's 2m34s, so each picture only gets 15/100ths exposure. If you PM me, I'll send a youtube link for the unlisted video. Matt hasn't cleared it yet for the general public. Not sure how Little Eva will feel about it either.

2016 can commit to Hatboro-Horsham.

we can also work with others at Rutgers (support 1676) and also NYC again we can work with either teams to break up the work if needed.

I havent read through the entire thread but any plans on where to post up the pictures for collection purposes..

I might recommend creating an Access database or even a general Excel based database for quick search and so we can do a quick dump also.

Version 2 now available. It's 10m30s with four versions of the Loco-Motion that allows nearly .7sec for each robot to be displayed. Here it is. (http://youtu.be/nzaaGrOKaEc) The other one will be removed.

There was discussion about creating a flyer that could be printed off and given to teams at each regional, so they understood what the pictures were to be used for. Has that been developed yet? Also, a single sheet that describes the specs and requirements for each picture, would be useful as well.

Thanks!

I personally have not developed anything and I'm not sure if Matt had anything going. However, I think that its a great idea so if anyone wants to make something, we would be willing to distribute it to everyone perticipating. As to specs and requirements I was planning on PMing everyone their respective week as a reminder so I can just attach a (smaller) list of requirements.

As competitions have started, and I am sure many people have started taking pictures (both for this showcase and for personal reasons), I figured now would be the best time to share this piece of information.

For resizing pictures, here is an extremely easy to do method.
Download PhotoResize from this link http://www.snapfiles.com/get/pictureresizer.html
Change the file name from 'PhotoResize400' to 'PhotoResize1024'. What this does is tell the program to make the pictures largest dimension be equal to 1024 pixels (the max that is requested for this project).
Drag the photos on top of the icon for PhotoResize1024. This is much like adding files to a folder.
Because this runs in a command prompt, you may have to click 'Run' in a security window for this to work. I have been using this for robotics and personal photos for quite some time now (3+years) and have had no issues with security issues.
Now you should see the command window open up and start running. The only thing you have to do now is wait. The command prompt will tell you to press any key to close, once the program has finished running.
This will create new files in the folder the original pictures were located. They will be listed as xxxx-1024, where xxxx is the original file name. (Ex. 123.jpg will appear as 123-1024.jpg)

I just ran this to verify the steps, and I think I covered everything. I did a picture from my Senior Design Project that was originally 5,788KB in size and 5184x3456 pixels. Once completed (took about 2 seconds), the new file is only 44KB in size and 1024x682 pixels.

Just remember to go back and get rid of the '-1024' from the file name to keep consistent with the naming structure that is requested.

Hope this helps, and please let me know if you have any questions/concerns.

Tested on Windows 7, Vista, and XP.
I don't own a Mac, so I have no clue if this works with one or not. Bootcamp should get it done though.

If you want a link that doesn't automatically start downloading a .exe:

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/pictureresizer.html

Edit: Looking at the developer's site (http://www.rw-designer.com/picture-resize), there are tons of commands that can be performed. Poking around, there's one for overwriting original files. Instead of using 'PhotoResize1024', use 'PhotoResize1024I', and the file names will stay the same. It'd also be a good idea to create a backup before doing it that way unless you absolutely don't want a copy of the larger files.

Thanks guys, I'm sure this will be useful for resizing pictures after they are taken!

For everyone comming into week 2, their is still no one photographing the Greater Toronto East Regional and the Oregon Regional

If you are attending one of these events, please help out!

I noted the posts on picture re-sizing with some interest. I use a free program called Irfanview for batch resizing as one of its many useful functions. In short, anyone on a windows-based computer who has any interest in digital photos at all, can make good use of this program. Ultra capable, I suggest that after a week of use you will be thinking of sending this guy a buck or two at least. I do know that if 10% of the people now using it had all sent him only $1, he would be quite wealthy.

Where does one get a henchman? I have a pretty good group of minions, but have always wanted a henchman.

Hey Guys,

I just wanted to go over a couple of the quick guidelines to taking pictures.

1. Please set your camera settings before the event to 1024x768. This is a fairly standard size that most cameras should have. If the pictures are to big they are very difficult to transfer in bulk, and if they are too small then they won't show as much detail.

2. Please take all the robot pictures in Portrait this is very important! It is nearly impossible to resize pictures from landscape to portrait without distorting the image.

3. As a guideline for how to take the picture you want to be able to see the front of the robot and the team # on both the front and side bumpers. Basically, you should be taking a diagonal pic of the robot. Also, please ensure that the pictures don't have people working on the robot. Most of the time they are blocking parts of the robot from view. I also highly suggest taking more than one picture of each robot and so you can later delete the extras keeping the best one.

4. Once you get the pictures downloaded, if you rename the files according to the team #, sorting becomes much, much easier. (Ex: 0001, 0011, 0111, 1114)

5. If you co-signed up to photograph a regional with someone else, you guys can decide how you want to share the load, there is no "best" way or anything like that.

We have found that https://www.wetransfer.com/ is great for transfering large amounts of pictures.
Thanks, Bryan

If you don't want to reset your camera "merely" to take these pictures, take whatever resolution above 1024x768 you like and forward your "monsters" to me via the wetransfer mentioned. I will endeavor to resize them for Bryan's use and send them to him on your behalf. PM for the requisite e-mail address.

I will be taking some pictures at Hartford, but I'll be busy, I suspect, and so will likely miss more than a few. I will not be trying to "downgrade" my images on a case by case basis. I expect to process whichever of them I submit to conform to Bryan's specification.

Hello All,

It's been quite a while sense this thread has been active. Unfortunately, many people have not yet sent in their photos. If you have not yet submitted your photos we have found that WeTransfer has been a great and easy way to take submissions of large files. It is easy to use and easy to download.

https://www.wetransfer.com/

Please use WeTransfer to email me at 93bryanc@gmail.com

If anyone has problems or questions or ideas for next year feel free to voice them in this thread. I hope to get receiving lots of photos soon!

Thank you very much, Bryan

The slideshow will be put together in addition to having the pictures viewable in a non-slide show manner. Both will be viewable on
frc-designs.com

However, as of now we have just a bit less than 50% of the robots so we need to be sent more pictures.

Can you post which robots you have?
After going through and deleting doubles my previous estimate of the number of robots was severely over estimated as we are currently have about 550 robots. However, this number would rise substantially if everyone sent in the pictures that they took. Here is the list.

1 4 7 27 33 51 53 66 67 68 70 74 79 85 87 88 107 108 116 118 122 123 134 138 141 148 166 174 180 181 192 204 207 216 217 226 231 234 237 244 245 247 281 288 292 294 302 308 314 322 326 330 336 337 339 346 348 357 358 383 384 386 388 395 401 405 415 422 435 442 447 449 451 453 457 461 462 467 468 469 470 488 494 499 503 509 519 533 539 540 547 548 573 580 587 589 597 599 606 611 612 614 617 619 620 623 639 653 665 686 687 691 696 702 703 704 709 714 768 772 801 836 848 857 858 862 888 894 900 904 910 922 974 987 995 1025 1033 1038 1065 1086 1095 1111 1123 1137 1138 1148 1155 1188 1195 1197 1218 1225 1243 1249 1250 1251 1254 1261 1262 1311 1319 1322 1389 1413 1418 1438 1446 1566 1477 1501 1502 1504 1506 1515 1519 1522 1523 1528 1533 1539 1541 1557 1592 1596 1598 1599 1610 1629 1643 1644 1646 1675 1677 1684 1692 1699 1701 1711 1717 1718 1719 1731 1735 1747 1748 1758 1759 1771 1793 1817 1829 1839 1849 1885 18951896 1902 1908 1915 1918 1940 1980 1998 2000 2021 2028 2054 2059 2068 2075 2080 2106 2107 2121 2137 2152 2158 2186 2190 2199 2200 2245 2246 2265 2283 2337 2363 2377 2383 2386 2393 2402 2404 2405 2421 2425 2429 2434 2458 2461 2468 2474 2483 2528 2534 2537 2546 2576 2579 2583 2586 2604 2611 2612 2614 2619 2627 2637 2642 2655 2659 2721 2745 2751 2767 2771 2787 2789 2817 2819 2833 2834 2848 2849 2851 2866 2890 2900 2911 2912 2914 2919 2936 2952 2959 2960 2961 2962 2963 2964 2966 2969 2973 2982 2985 2988 3027 3028 3029 3035 3072 3080 3098 3103 3116 3120 3123 3136 3140 3150 3164 3168 3175 3196 3215 3227 3229 3234 3240 3258 3259 3270 3274 3279 3283 3295 3302 3307 3309 3322 3325 3331 3335 3336 3345 3346 3353 3357 3359 3366 3370 3373 3389 3398 3402 3408 3414 3415 3417 3419 3421 3452 3455 3458 3459 3478 3481 3493 3497 3506 3509 3512 3521 3534 3535 3536 3537 3538 3539 3540 3542 3545 3546 3547 3548 3552 3558 3561 3566 3568 3570 3572 3582 3601 3603 3614 3618 3619 3627 3640 3650 3653 3655 3656 3657 3658 3661 3667 3675 3677 3680 3688 3696 3696 3700 3701 3709 3714 3733 3737 3739 3743 3748 3752 3759 3763 3767 3769 3783 3793 3796 3797 3811 3821 3822 3824 3834 3844 3845 3851 3856 3861 3863 3872 3875 3925 3932 3934 3939 3941 3943 3948 3952 3961 3966 3969 3971 3972 3984 3993 3999 4000 4002 4003 4004 4013 4016 4019 4020 4025 4029 4044 4046 4052 4063 4067 4078 4079 4083 4092 4098 4099 4101 4123 4130 4137 4140 4141 4144 4162 4170 4184 4201 4210 4216 4219 4224 4237 4242 4245 4265 4266 4273 4282 4286 4288 4291 4294 4306 4325 4327 4332 4337 4339 4341 4345 4362 4368 4375 4376 4377 4387 4380 4381 4382 4384 4389 4390 4394 4395 4396 4398 4405 4409 4917

Todd,

The project most certainly did not die. Unfortunately, Bryan and I did not get the number of photo responses that we had hoped. If you look at Bryan's previous response (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1174678&postcount=118), you will notice that we only have around 550 total teams. That is a small percentage of the total number of robots.

Hopefully the photos will be coming in the near future! Thanks for checking in!
