Does any team see themselves using 22 motors this year? Is there any actual reason to utilize 22 motors?

Draining your battery as fast as robotically possible?

Yeah, that "You can use 22 motors this year!!!!1!!" thing was just to get us excited this year or something. All the motors are restricted to only 2 allowed, and CIMs are just 4. With like 8 different types of motors, it sounds like a lot but it doesn't really amount to anything.

Hmm.. 22 times what, $109 for a Jaguar speed controller.. Thats $2,398 in speed controllers alone.. Of course you could use Spike relays on some, but then you lose the ability to slow that motor down those few RPM's you need

I wouldn't rule out van door motors from previous years' KOP, fisher-price or banebots 775 motors yet. Plenty of solutions.

You folks seriously need to check out the Robonauts 2008 video.

With 8 motors in the drive train, that's only 14 more to scatter around the robot!

Keep in mind that during build season, FIRST teams can purchase Jaguars for $85.00. It's also illegal to hook motors up to Spikes.

yes, we plan on using 22. to do this we have decided on a very simply 15wd chassis that will get us over the bump in a breeze.

No, it's not. The only motors you can not hook up to the Spikes are the CIM's and FP. Everything else is fair game, which means 16 motors out of 22.

Do servo "motors" count in the 22 tally?

No. As long as they fit the <4W max power rating, according to R.48.L, you can have as many as you can fit on there.

Ahh, ok. Well, then I think the 22 number will be reached by a minority of teams then.

That's a lot of power draw during 2+ mins even IF they aren't being used non-stop.

Not to mention the fact that, perhaps I'm just missing something, but the PDB only has 20 spots on it for motors...

Shhh... let them live the dream.

If you have more than 11 motors on your robot, all I can ask is, "Why?"

2 of the motors are the VEX motors which are PWM off the digital sidecar. Hey, there's just enough space!

i see this as a advantage to all teams, however i don't think many teams will utilize it. it's nice to see an extended limit. i would like to see a robot with 22 motors that each have a purpose though...

Its good for a laugh.
And as mentioned, the PD wont hold that many. Personally as controls captain Im trying to keep to no more than 8, four for drive and four for the challenge piece whose designs have not been finalized yet.

A few comments:

-You are theoretically limited to 21, as there are 20 spots on the PD board. However, one must be dedicated to the cRio modules, thus leaving you 19 for motors. The two Vex motors can run at 6v off of the digital sidecar, so they don't count.

-You do have to make the battery last the whole match.

-You do have to make weight.

-The point of allowing so many motors is to give teams the freedom to choose the right motor for the right application. It is not a challenge to use as many motors as possible.

(goes on FB to ask some 469 friends if they are building something crazy)
