I REALLLY Hope your right. It would be so much fun. But at the same time it could be a nightmare... they would have to rewrite quite a few rules, and it would deal with alot of things teams may have never dealt with in the past... But then again, isn't that kinda the point of FIRST? If we keep just doing land based games where we pick up balls / tubes its going to get boring eventually....

....If you look at an early version of the robot code I wrote, the one solenoid valve we used to test the pneumatics was named "PartyCannon"..........
We planned on building some small attachment to make the robot shoot confetti... Perhaps now that the season is over we can actually make something like that to use on our Swag bot....

Sweet. The 10k lakes regional doesn't have any thing like that as far as I know, but I'll be sure to deck as much of our team gear as possible out with ponies... We already have a pinkie pie joystick and laptop, and our website isn't exactly devoid of pony either... now we just need a giant pony covered pannel truck to haul all our stuff. :P

Aww...my team would kill me if I made everything pony. There aren't that many of us on the team, we had 4 last season but 2 of them just graduated. I hope to convert either more team members to bronyism or more bronies to robotics this year.

This is not very different than FIRST; I have seen people referencing FIRST Robotics at various places on the internet and in real life. Not expecting to see things makes life more interesting.:)

In the YouTube video Ballad of the Brony (Remastered) at 54:39 Saberspark speculates that a majority of bronies are geeks. This is just speculation and I have not seen demographic information about bronies to be able to say if this is true or not; it makes sense, from what I have seen both communities are very interested in learning more about what everyone else does.
I also see a number of similarities between FIRST and MLP FiM. Acceptance of others from diverse backgrounds, people with different skills and personalities working together to solve a problem, and both provide positive role models to name a few.

Season premiere was . . . interesting. The villain was slightly less role than I expected. But self-levitation is now cannon and reverse gravity spells mean MULTI-HOOF DRIFTING. lul. So I wasn't as moved as much as the first two episodes, but it did introduce cool concepts, so I'm sure there's more to come.

Honestly, I loved the season premiere. I thought that the villain was a lot more sinister and creepy because he didn't have many speaking lines. I mean, the show needed a good villain who actually wants to conquer something (unlike Discord) and who doesn't think about things biting them in the butt later (like Chrysalis did).
Now bear in mind this is a personal feeling.

Well, It my first year programming robots n stuff too, but I'm in charge of helping out programming team transition from labview to c++. Although, I should be happy, because from what little I know about labview right now, I'd choose c++ over it any day. I like my variables variables, not vi's and interfaces.

Yeah, we've got things started already that we didn't have started til' week 4 in the past four years, according to the former lead programmer. That always makes me feel nice, going to have some extra time to debug and all makes me very happy.

We transitioned to LabView a few years ago, not sure if we used C++ before that, but I know we used C for a little while when we first started as a team.
Overall, I think the upcoming season is going to be very cool. The closer it gets the more I hope I'm chosen to drive. :P (We have a 2 year driver, he'll be driving, plus either me or another team member.) I think it'd be neat to drive, and I drove half the matches at last years MARC event.

On one hand, the shooter team is a dynamo and there is reasonable programming being done...but we also barely have a vague notion of what the drivetrain is going to be and we definitely have NO idea whether climbing is going to be a thing or not on our robot...

We have our ideas about climbing, I'll keep them quiet for now because I'm top secret like that, and it's fairly complicated. Also, you live quite close to me, I just noticed.
I have a bunch of pony stickers, our robot may be a Star wars reference(because of things from Star Wars that sparked ideas that we are indeed using.), what if I covered it with ponies? Pony wars. Star ponies. My Little Star Wars.

wow, that's a ton of events. We can only afford to go to one regional, and I doubt we would be able to organize ourselves enough to travel anywhere even if we had the money.
We have our ideas about climbing, I'll keep them quiet for now because I'm top secret like that, and it's fairly complicated. Also, you live quite close to me, I just noticed.

(Monroe Trojan Robotics), which is Monroe High's team. T.E.M.P.E.S.T. is Jefferson High's team, if I recall. There's also Virus in Monroe, which is the community college team. (Other county teams include Bedford Express and Dundee Vibots.)
We're going to the Waterford District, the St. Joseph District, the Buckeye Regional in Cleveland, and the Queen city Regional in Cincinnati. Hopefully States and Worlds, too! :D

I joined FRC barely over a year ago, as I joined about two weeks before last years kickoff, before that I had no involvement in FIRST.
As far as being a brony, I watched an episode of MLP during season 1, and liked it but was too embarrassed to become a brony, so I stopped watching. After more than a year of confidence boosting (to a point where I don't care what people think.) I started watching again, and still loved it. I became an actual brony right as season 2 ended. I wish I remember what episode I watched during season 1's time. Maybe I'll try to remember what little I can and watch through the entire season again. :P
My FIRST involvement started last year at the beginning of the school year. I joined for electronics, stayed for everything else! I've started mentoring two to four FLL teams this year every week this school year.
As for Brony'dom, I was reading the Bros of Failblog every day and saw all these pony maymays and started watching. I didn't become a heavy duty Brony until later though.
Fun story: I joined Quiz Bowl this year. These are usually pretty tame affairs. A bunch of total nerds showing off trivia knowledge doesn't exactly inspire rowdiness. Anyway, at my first event, the question reader starts one question and the end of the first sentence was "...featuring villains Zecora and Discord." I SLAMMED the buzzer and YELLED "MY LITTLE PONY: FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC!" :D

FRC - Started Sophomore Year.
Brony - Curiosity got the better of me. Funny how that is.

That's one thing I love about my school. I was the first guy that became a brony that I know of... openly, at least. At a school of 2000, that's unique. I've spread it around, and people are starting to watch it more. Now people I don't even know are bronies here and there, so the fandom is growing big time. I wish when I first watched the show I wasn't so embarrassed to watch it and joined the small fandom that was around for mlp at the time. By the time I warmed up to it it was already... should I say, Mane-stream? :cool:
I don't know if it'll ever be "Mainstream", but I love it, and hope that guys can be and do feminine things sometime. If girls can do masculine things, why can't guys do feminine? I'm not going to continue this debate - not that any of you would object - just don't feel like writing another mile of reasons. (Also, this is me saying "There shouldn't be standards for each gender", to put it shorthand.)

People still don't really expect it. And being a brony back then wasn't as fun as it is now. You didn't have such a huge fan base, and it kind of felt like it was you against the world. Now, it just feels so much more awesome knowing you have such a huge group of people to fall back on. I'd say this kind of large fandom started around BronyCon '12, but that's just my opinion. In any event, age doesn't really matter. If you're a brony now, you've been in the herd forever!

You started it? You're ahead of us! Our build and electronics are weeks ahead of past years, but our programming's is all rookie programmers, including myself, so I'm teaching myself and 5 or 6 others to do everything. Luckily, the guy that programmed the past four years became a mentor, and I have easy contact with him. Right now I'm teaching myself to program for two cameras at once, as we plan to have multiple. Actually, I just finished installing LabView here at home to program with. Good luck to you! Sounds like we both may need it!
EDIT: We did start the basic code, just haven't really done anything past it. I still need to make sure my basic code's all good, including a check from our programming mentor.

You'll find out that multiple cameras can be your greatest ally if you have the determination to really make sure they are fine-tuned. They were the reason our team was able to win the Seattle (Seaddle?) Olympic Regional last year (along with our amazing triple balance).

This will be our first year doing anything with cameras... As of now it seems like it's going to be a competition to see whether the rest of the team can have the hardware done before we have the programming figured out. (then they can nag us about it... :P )

The robot uses the KOP belts system modified to work with CIM-PLE Boxes. It's running on concrete so its slightly more slick than it should be and it's able to turn easier that way, but we'll see how it does on capret with full weight.
Two cameras bring about multiple advantages esp if you can't see all the way down the field and you have a frisbee you need to pick up, to vision tracking on the targets on the goals. If I am able to get two working, I would have one possibly in a position that would help me align the robot for climing.

Hehe, not from T.E.M.P.A.S.T. there are about 5 or 6 robotics teams down here in Monroe County I think. At least 3 of which say they're from Monroe. I'm off of M.T.R. (Monroe Trojan Robotics), which is Monroe High's team. T.E.M.P.E.S.T. is Jefferson High's team, if I recall. There's also Virus in Monroe, which is the community college team. (Other county teams include Bedford Express and Dundee Vibots.)

Look, Twilight has been perpetually OP for how long now? I fail to see what, if any, elements of canon this will change.
Plus, don't you think the physical embodiment of magic would deserve to be an Alicorn? (Although Twilight is my favorite pony, so I may be biased)
It seems like something that should be an ending event though.

I think that what will happen is that either
Twilight will only temporarly be an alicorn (unlikely)
The season will end as twilight permanatly being an alicorn and season 4 will continue with other brand-new characters that somewhat resemble the old ones (or use the bg ponies)

I personally think that the fandom will just head in a bright new direction. I mean, it's not like she's going to ditch science or anything. (If that happened... I would just... It won't happen) Things will just be kind of different. But still awesome.
On a kind of unrelated note, I was tossed off my team. I wish I knew how it happened or what I did wrong (I don't even think my coach knows yet), but I'm not sure. All I know is that I no longer code for my team, and probably won't for the rest of build season. I don't want to let the rest of build season just go away, and after the first day of not going to a meeting, I feel awful. So I come to you guys hat in hoof, asking if there is something, anything, I could do to help anyone. I'm more than happy to offer skills in Java, C++, Objective-C, LabView, and a little bit of Python to any team that wants or needs an extra programmer. I just want to be helpful for the second half of build season. Could you guys help a fellow Brony out?
TL;DR AliTwi won't stop loving science or her friends, the story won't change too much, I've been cast adrift for some reason, and I need a team to help program for in the second half of build season. Any job will do, as long as I can help a team that wants it.

We'll we are currently having some issues with our CAN encoder. I think what we are trying to use is a Magnetic Encoder, or something like that. For some reason, it doesn't work in the labview example program, and the motor just constantly gains speed. Email me if your interested in helping out.

PIDs? Sounds important..... Sounds like I have some reading to do.....
PID is a nice controller? to get something to be at something else.
Ie, Flywheel to be at X RPMs, or move an arm so a POT is at X volts.
We used it on our shooter last year. Labview(if you use it) has some nice examples on it. It's just a pain to tune.
Not sure if we are going to use that this year, or try Bang-bang.
PID is a controller that uses Proportional, Integral, and Derivative equations to controla linear system. Cruise control in a car is a good example of how PID is used; the car knows how fast it is going, how fast the driver wants to go, and the computer does calculations to determine how much power to send to the wheels.
Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PID_controller#Manual_tuning) has some good information about how PID works, some information on manual tuning, and how adjusting each parameter changes how the system reacts.
Bang-bang control a quick implementation PID, with the P gain set high and ID set to zero, and with only on and off output instead of the full range of values the motor controllers can accept. Theincreased complexity of PID comes with the increased control over the system.
We used both bang-bang and PID a few days ago on our shooter motor; both worked however PID was smoother and allows you to set any speed instead of having to hard code values.

I used the manual tuning method in 2011 when I programmed a crab drive system. The way I tuned the PID was I set all 3 values to 0 and then increased the “P” value until it oscillated around the set point. I then started increasing “I” until the oscillation settled down. For the crab drive system just using the “PI” was sufficient; for a flywheel you might need to put a small value in for “D” to smooth out the change in speed caused by firing a Frisbee.
I tuned the system completely by adjusting the values one at a time until I got to a system behave like I wanted it to. After about 2 hours, without using any of the advanced math, I was able to get the PID for both sides of the robot tuned in. The Wikipedia link I posted links to the section that describes how to tune the PID without math. Once you get a sense of how each value effects the system it becomes easier to tune it.
I came up with the following scenario after teaching myself how to tune the PID on the crab driver system:
A very simplified scenario of how PID works is a car is driving down the highway at 55 MPH and the driver wants to go 70 MPH. The “P” value would be how hard they step on the gas to accelerate; the greater the “P” value the harder they stop on the gas. The “I” value would be how quickly the driver changes the pressure on the accelerator as they approach 70 MPH; a larger value results in getting to 70 MPH quicker but overshooting 70 and having to slow down. Finally the “D” value would be how smoothly the driver corrects for the speed not being 70 MPH; a larger value means the driver is more likely to overshoot 70 MPH initially but the overall speed changes will be smoother and not bounce above and below 70 as much.

Ah well you see... Me and aeniug2 made that one day out of boredom over skype. I took some RD vectors I had lying around on my desktop and recolored it, then he made the sick background and text. He did most of the work. Props to his skill he can make some pretty cool things :D.

Tried naming our bot "One Trick Pony" - because it only shoots right now - and it was deemed inappropriate. :(.
NEWS FLASH FOR EVERYBODY:
Hate to submit more news, but this'll probably get featured on EQD fairly quickly, and I think you can see why. (I'll give an extra spoiler. The name of the spin-off is probably going to be "Equestria Girls", and it will launch with a movie.) GET READY FOR A BRONY SPINOFF. The series will specifically target the "Brony" fanbase, and encourage even more fan participation. In addition, Hasbro's signed deals to have bronies featured on "Modern Family" and "The Big Bang Theory". For those of you more specifically interested, this is part of a process called differentiation, which basically means splitting the fandom up into two groups. Little girls will get "Friendship is Magic", hence the princess-themed finale, and bronies will get "Equestria Girls". Whether or not EG will have FiM's cast of ponies, is, as of now, still under consideration by Hasbro, and there's nothing close to a final decision.

You didn't have to hear the news from someone who was forced to pen the notice. From the inside knowledge I can get from my mom, Hasbro is tightening its grip on the fanbase in multiple ways, and BronyCon itself may be threatened as a "derivative gathering". Please try not to be too upset. If people choose to leave the fanbase over this, I honestly cannot blame them, because if what Hasbro's internal memorandums my mom showed me say are true, things are only going to get worse. Much, much, much worse. I'm really sorry things have to go this way.
If this is truly the end, and our ponies really are going on to greener pastures, can we still stay friends/build season buddies. I'd like that.

If you guys can pardon my sentimental blubbering, I really need to get this off my chest.
In light of recent events, I have a bad feeling that this will be the end of our little fandom. I have enjoyed 2 wonderful years with every brony I know, and made friends worldwide. This fandom taught me deep life lessons that I know I will not forget in the future. From my very first time watching the show, to my first con, meeting with the VA's, my first meetup with with other bronies from New York through the innumerable friends and hobbies I've made, to the simple knowledge that I'm a guy who likes little ponies and that that's OK, this fandom has been nothing short of magical. I know that the brony fandom was a turning point in my life, and one I will always look back on. This show, and the magic of friendship, have truly been the most magical things in my life.
So if the predictions I'm hearing are true, if the further measures I've seen will be issued and carried out, if the fandom is really being laid to rest, I just want to say goodbye, and a sincere thank you to everypony that I don't really think words can begin to express.

This is going to be short till I get home and post proper, but from what I know, and only I know, not much has changed for me, I will still watch the show, assuming I doesn't go to crap, I still plan on going to EverfreeNW and Bronycon(which BTW, is anyone planing to go to either?), the friends I've met aren't going away, I will still give too much money to webhosting. NEWS FLASH FOR EVERYBODY:
Hate to submit more news, but this'll probably get featured on EQD fairly quickly, and I think you can see why. (I'll give an extra spoiler. The name of the spin-off is probably going to be "Equestria Girls", and it will launch with a movie.) GET READY FOR A BRONY SPINOFF. The series will specifically target the "Brony" fanbase, and encourage even more fan participation. In addition, Hasbro's signed deals to have bronies featured on "Modern Family" and "The Big Bang Theory". For those of you more specifically interested, this is part of a process called differentiation, which basically means splitting the fandom up into two groups. Little girls will get "Friendship is Magic", hence the princess-themed finale, and bronies will get "Equestria Girls". Whether or not EG will have FiM's cast of ponies, is, as of now, still under consideration by Hasbro, and there's nothing close to a final decision.

Which sucks, I heard it was because, by law, if their trademark isn't properly enforced then they lose it.
You didn't have to hear the news from someone who was forced to pen the notice. From the inside knowledge I can get from my mom, Hasbro is tightening its grip on the fanbase in multiple ways, and BronyCon itself may be threatened as a "derivative gathering". Please try not to be too upset. If people choose to leave the fanbase over this, I honestly cannot blame them, because if what Hasbro's internal memorandums my mom showed me say are true, things are only going to get worse. Much, much, much worse. I'm really sorry things have to go this way.
If this is truly the end, and our ponies really are going on to greener pastures, can we still stay friends/build season buddies. I'd like that.
This does add another reason to the C&Ds and whatnot. I really hope they don't become like Disney.

The abridged takedowns were an unfortunate side effect of automatic youtube technology meant to take down anything that shared clips with anything on Google Drive. Its not Hasbro doing it.
Alicorn twilight is drama. Just as Cadence and shining and the wedding were drama a year ago, and Tank was drama, and season 3 only having 13 episodes was drama. Its nothing.
The brony Doc is honestly them getting butthurt over piracy in a fandom that has existed on youtube based piracy since its beginning. They should have expected it.
Fighting is magic is not the first game to be taken down. Every MLP game like this that has been made has either A: Asked first and recieved a "No" from hasbro, or B: got a C&D later since they didnt ask. Its not new, and I kind of honestly expected it from the beginning to happen eventually.
Honestly, this is coincidence it happened in such a short amount of time.
So, don't jump the gun JUST yet. Let's wait and see what happens, and watch how it all play out.

Well, I can see just how much the recent events have rocked the fandom (and this thread).
Honestly, my thoughts about the whole thing are kinda mixed. Firstly, about the C&D letters, it really sucks to have a project you've been hard at work on for close to two years (I forget when they actually started that) just suddenly have to stop and cause you to throw away everything you've done. That really sucks. Also, the fact that the brony doc turned out to be kinda...well, you know. That also sucks. All the drama in the fandom nowadays about every little thing just honestly puts a bad taste in my mouth. It makes me yearn for 2011, back before Derpy became a mainstay Where's Waldo gag in S2, and the show was good just by being unique, not by using the ideas that the fandom comes up with. However, that may also be due to Hasbro's bigger impact on the show's writing, but I'm not 100% sure on that.
To be honest, it feels like Hasbro's becoming controlling to everybody now, and becoming somewhat of a dictator, instead of the docile big brother from before, who didn't seem to mind all the fan content and re-uploads, and even, in some cases, praising it. Episode 12 covers what the Mane 6 are doing while they leave Spike by himself in Episode 11.
So not two parallel storylines in the same episode, but two parallel storylines nonetheless.

Hasbro has no choice in taking down fan content when it gets too big. Either take it down, or loose their trademark. Also, people overreact all the time, in every fandom. It's just that since we are more "together," more people get informed of news than it would be otherwise.

Why it is credible:
"Equestrian girls" and the fact that it will be aimed at teens strongly implies that it won't be the ponies we know and love. Especially when all teenage girls like is Justin Bieber, Twilight, 50 Shades of Grey, etc.
Even if, worst possible case scenario, there's something horribly awful waiting for us, and the fandom sets with Season 3, I would be OK with that. Ponies gave me something truly wonderful, and helped me transition from childhood to adulthood. I would definitely do it all again, and I'm happy with the way it worked out. And if the fandom continues, well, that's even better! Just remember, however sad the ending may be, My Little Pony still happened, and we can be thankful for that. (Now if I could only say the same thing about the fact that I have no team... *RAGES*)

There is going to be a learning curve for both the fan base and content owners but eventually equilibrium will be reached. Even if Hasbro went completely crazy they can’t logistically nor legally take down all the fan content.

Oh how true that is. Even if Hasbro spent more than infinity dollars in taking down all the content, we would probably just move to the darknet.
Yea, it's mainly just the 'big' projects that get hit, so the logical course is to say nothing till it is done!

So, how was the episode today?
I like how it was a musical, but I don't like the plot structure of it. It felt like I was watching 2 halves of 2 different episodes. Also the whole Twilight is now a Mary Sue thing too.
It was good, for a season 3EP, but was a bit rushed and forced. Should of ended with the Equestrian games.

About 2-3 2-parters worth of storylines, Twilight becomes a Mary Sue, and an extremely unsatisfying ending. It just felt like the 13 cut episodes were severely shortened and rammed into one. And the season was going so well...
I did like the music, Ingram hasn't disappointed yet. The poor guy basically had to make up for a half-season of music, though, so it was jammed in too tight.
As is kind of expected when the marketing department grabs the wheel and and sharply WTF-wards, it was kind of meh. I don't blame the writers though, since it seems said marketing department forced their hands.
6.5/10, season 4 is on shaky ground. (And by shaky I mean ice-capped erupting volcano shaky.)
