2012 Bill of Materials
We are having a bit of trouble finding the guidelines and template for this years bill of materials. If someone could point us in the right direction that would be great. Thanks and happy building! :)

Re: 2012 Bill of Materials
I have not seen the BOM template, yet. However, per <T09>, you are not required to turn in the BOM (only show), and are only recommended to use the template.

Thanks Joe!

Re: 2012 Bill of Materials
Does this mean we can go back to doing our BOM on a napkin at the last minute?

This coming from a guy who sits at the inspector's table and has to look at those BOMs. I sure hope the standard BOM template makes a return. |

Given that the BOMs aren't turned in this year, I the the guy who sits at the inspectors table and collects BOMs is out of a job. |

What do you think my answer to that might be, hmmm? I will check into the link for the BOM but the template has not changed for many years. Be sure to account for everything and you may have a printed copy or a readable copy on a laptop for your inspector during inspection. |
Re: 2012 Bill of Materials
Joe and Jenny,
I'm not worried about being kept busy and out of trouble at a regional :D I thought that FIRST mined those BOMs for statistics on what is used, which is why they collected them. |

Bringing this thread back so that i don't have to start a new one....
Anyone found the 2012 BOM Template yet? Thanks, -Duke |
Re: 2012 Bill of Materials
The template isn't out yet, however does anybody know what time it's supposed to come out?
|
Re: 2012 Bill of Materials
Please be patient. The BOM will be available momentarily.

It's released. Look at section 5 under game manual:

Re: 2012 Bill of Materials
Ok, so is anyone else having problems acquiring the file? I download the .zip file, but there isn't any excel file to be found. If someone has been able to get a hold of it, could they please post below with it as an attachment?
Thanks, -Duke |
Re: 2012 Bill of Materials
Duke,
The file in the link above is an .xlsx file, not a zip file. If you have a previous version of Microsoft Office, you need to have an update that can convert the file to your version of Office. If you haven't kept up with the revisions to Office then let me know. I will see if I can get a backwards compatible version posted. |

They've simplified it this year. Now there's only one tab (not counting the readme tab), as opposed to last year's separate tabs for KOP and Non-KOP. Does that mean they only want to see non-KOP items listed? Or should we include KOP items also, with a price of $0? |
Re: 2012 Bill of Materials
I'm going to partly answer my own question. The "Read Me" tab of the template says:

Re: 2012 Bill of Materials
I figured it out. The link downloads as 2012_Inspection_BOM_Template.xlsx.zip
I simply told it to open with microsoft excel instead of trying to unzip and extract, and it worked. Thanks for the input though, guys. |
Re: 2012 Bill of Materials

Confirmed: it Downloads as "2012_Inspection_BOM_Template.zip" I had to rename the file and change the extention to .xlsx and it works perfectly. |
Re: 2012 Bill of Materials
xlsx (and docx and pptx) files are contained in a zip file. If you change the extension of those files to zip, you can see all the underlying XML that stores your documents, spreadsheets and presentations.

Re: 2012 Bill of Materials
Yes, KOP parts (why does that sound redundant :D )list at $0.00. That's how it worked last year.

Re: 2012 Bill of Materials
Jim,
The title is a holdover from last year which had a sheet for KOP already filled out for you. This year there is so many parts available through KOP, First Choice, ARA, voucher and rookie KOP is was very difficult to get everything listed for you. If it makes it easier, simply copy the sheet and enter a KOP sheet with $0.00 entries. The Robot rules Sec. 4.1.3 tells all for this item. Your list also assists inspectors when looking for parts on your robot. This year you can also simply have a laptop (preferred) or your Classmate showing the BOM or you can have it printed out as in the past. We will not be collecting the data this year but you will need to display the BOM at all events. |
Re: 2012 Bill of Materials
So are KOP items required on the BOM?
How do we deal with parts from pervious KOP's like the Banner Photoeyes from last year? |
Re: 2012 Bill of Materials
[R13]
The total cost of all non-KOP items shall not exceed $3,500.00 USD. All costs are to be determined as explained in Section 4.1.3: Budget Constraints. The following items are excluded from the total cost calculation: A. items listed on any KOP Checklist (qty is limited to the total listed in the most recent checklist), B. items obtained via a Product Donation Voucher included in the KOP, C. items ever distributed to the team via FIRST Choice, D. any non-functional decorations, E. individual fasteners, adhesives, or lubricants that are less than $1.00 each, F. spare parts, and G. parts of the Operator Console. |

Also, with different models of FP motors, if the one model was in one years KOP, and a different model was in a different KOP, do I account for the price of both, one, or neither? |
Re: 2012 Bill of Materials
Alex,
I read it as any KOP item is excluded from cost calculations. If you used Igus parts that were not part of a KOP then those need to be priced and added to the calculation. If you do not have a KOP checklist for a particular year, let me know, I might have it in my archive or you might find it on the FIRST archive or another website that has been archiving things for FRC. |
Re: 2012 Bill of Materials
Forgive me if this has already come up, but are we required to use the FIRST-provided format, or can we make our own spreadsheet from scratch provided it has all the same information, in a slightly different layout?
|
Re: 2012 Bill of Materials
Sandy,
Teams are encouraged to use the BOM Template posted on the FIRST website. Please note that while BOMs must be shown to Inspectors, FRC teams are not required to submit their BOMs to the Inspectors. You may use your own design but it may add time to your inspection process as the inspector looks over a spreadsheet unknown to them. |
Re: 2012 Bill of Materials
I just finished my teams BOM and found the total cost to be rather high (compared to last year). It is pretty darn close to the limit. Is anybody else finding this out?
|
Re: 2012 Bill of Materials
My Team got a bit behind and we are just now doing our BOM(by the way yes our bot is already bagged and tagged so this is going to be quite a task). Last year FRC provided a template that included a listing of all the KOP items on one shee and another for non-KOP items. Is there a format like that for this year?, or is there only a base template and I'll have to include the KOP items we used by hand.
Thanks. |

Re: 2012 Bill of Materials
;) As far as my brand new copy goes, the zip file on the USFIRST website does not contain any .xls files at all.
C:\Documents and Settings\Stereo Optical\My Documents\2012 game\2012_Inspection_BOM_Template_Rev_A. Myabe there is some sense to the folders with xml files, but they don't seem to work together on my EXCEL 2010 nor open office. I wonder what they were thinking ? Was it the same user experience experts who posted vital contest info for High School users on YouTube ? |

I just used the .xlsx file found in the link in the 5. Tournament section, near the bottom of this page. http://www.usfirst.org/roboticsprogr...ated-documents Although I don't quite understand why it's in .xlsx, and I saved it as a .xls file so we could work with it more easily (we're a bit behind in our spreadsheet software). |

I find the official BOM template to be somewhat annoying to work with for two reasons: 1) The small, blank columns require me to hit a few extra arrow keys each time I enter a part, and they prevent me from effectively using shortcuts like shift-right, which adds up when I'm entering a hundred parts; 2) I always have to add more rows to some of the subsystems and then repair the formatting and subtotals afterwards.
So I used a very simple BOM format instead (blank example attached). It was faster and easier. I added a grand total at the bottom when I was finished. Attachment 12254 Edit: Excel 2003 version: Attachment 12255 |
