Quick question
 

Hey guys, rookie team here.
We hjust have a quick question to confirm something. Are we allowed to cut down our frame to be smaller than the two possible set-ups from the andymark kit that was given to us. We see nothing against it in the manual but we just want to double check before we cut

You can but remember that you can't add metal back to it!

Measure thrice and think very carefully before you cut your kit chassis up into little bits.

Yes it is legal to make a robot smaller then the 28x38inchs.
So feel free to cut away, but remember think twice cut once...

You definitely want to avoid using a 28x38" frame. Go for 27x37 at the largest.

The reason is that bolt heads and such will be a problem as well any 'out of square conditions in your robot. As rookie team, you haven't seen the 'sizing box' -- this is a 28x38x60" box, that your robot has to fit into, or you don't get on the field.

Brian,
If you are using the kitbot frame kit you must cut it. The parts exceed maximum dimensions for the robot. I recommend that all cuts be made planning for a frame that is 1/4" smaller in all dimensions. That should give you a frame that is at least 1/2" under the max dimensions allowed and gives you an opportunity to add hardware that you have forgotten previously.

This is one of the most common rookie mistakes.

The Robot must satisfy the following size constraints:
A. horizontal dimensions must not exceed 28 by 38 in.,
B. the absolute height must not exceed 84 in.,
C. the height of the Robot at the start of the match must not exceed 60 in.,
D. any appendage may not extend more than 14 in. beyond the frame perimeter, and
E. no other part of the Robot may extend beyond the vertical projection of the Frame Perimeter (with the
exception of minor protrusions permitted per 0).

This was not a legal robot in 2008 as deemed by the GDC later. It is not the size that made it illegal though. The bumper rules have changed, in minor ways, for this year only.

IIRC, it was determined to be two separate robots (due to the bumpers). This determination caused much confusion as there was no clear definition of robot that particular year (well, there was... but that's a whole nother story).

Search "Speed Racer" on CD and you should find more of the story. That picture is missing the other half of the robot.

Wow - amazed to see that "Speed Racer" still lives on in the memories of those on CD...
