2012 Palmetto Regional

I'm just going to start the thread like last year.
Welcome back to the Charleston, SC Palmetto Regional it looks like a more South Carolina dominated year with a few exceptions of NC, TN, and NJ all of our Florida friends don't seem to be on the list. The list shows only 44 teams compared to last years 56.
I still expect heavy competition this year.
Teams like M.O.R.T, Metal in Motion, Los Pollos Locos, Spark Robotics, Burning Magnetos..ect.

It should be some fun.

M'Aiken Magic will be bringing it's "A" game considering how similar this game is to the past 2 years of FTC competitions, which our program is mainly successful in.

Good Luck!

Re: 2012 Palmetto Regional

Team 3489, "Category 5" is looking forward to competing in our home-town regional after a stop in Orlando in week 2. Last year's Palmetto had 43 teams compete, so the turnout is about the same. I remember the team count all too well as we finished 43rd in our first and only regional (as rookies)....:o We did manage to bring home the Rookie Inspiration award as a nice consolation prize.

This year, we're loaded up with 3 times the student members of last year's team, now we just need to focus their efforts a little bit better.

Look forward to seeing you all at Palmetto. Please stop by our pit and say hello.

My bad, ahahaa I can't remember the list.

Re: 2012 Palmetto Regional

You KNOW that Los Pollos Locos will be there! With SPAM and Triple Helix not coming to Palmetto this year, someone's got to defend the title.

I've also been to the shops of 1293 and 3976. I won't spill any of their beans, but let's just say that Team Columbia is rolling deep this year. (The latter was part of 2815--while they didn't take enough kids to lose rookie status, they definitely got some of our all-stars. Watch out for them, especially since they'll also be practiced after going to Peachtree.)

JohnFogarty 22-02-2012 07:25

M'aiken Magic is ready to go! We got in a solid amount of driving practice this last weekend. This should be the year of magic that no one shall forget.

Re: 2012 Palmetto Regional

Should be another fun event. What's this driving practice that you speak of? We will be loading up next week to hit Knoxville, so we will have a little experience under our belt. Our robot does this in our minds:
8WD with AndyMark pneumatic tires and Super Shifters
Shooter that can clear balls half the court, and can score 3's from the area around the key
Ramp actuator to help get two robots up, 3 robots will be a challenge/impossible for us (unless we have a special ramp robot on our alliance)

This is in theory right now, so hopefully Knoxville will be kind to us and we can have some momentum coming to North Charleston.

JohnFogarty 22-02-2012 16:13

You know. Just driving the robot around the shop..picking up balls shooting shots. Practicing balancing quickly. The usual.

In the end.
Hybrid mode capability.
We have 8" wheels 6WD.
Tower style ball feeding.
Lazy Susan style articulated turret.
In a perfect world it will be automatic tracking.
Automatic distance compensating shooter.
Has special arms for lowering the bridge.
At this moment in time the maximum tested shot is 25 feet.
Though for all intents and purposes until I have 100% accuracy from there we won't be shooting from that distance.

Re: 2012 Palmetto Regional

"Invention is the mother of necessity" would describe our year so far. We went to Tenn. planning on playing the game in one direction, and then switched directions on Friday. We knew the drive train was robust, could climb bridges, and take the bump without pausing. So when we tried some defense, it was good for that too. It wasn't until later on Friday that we truly understood the importance of that co-op bridge. So we pull an audible and help teams balance.

Our strategy for next week is to get better at hitting two 3-pointers in hybrid. Then in teleop get some balls off of bridges if need be, then clear balls from the other side (taking shots from beyond the bump). For the end game, we hope to assist our two partners in balancing our bridge and then hooking up with the other alliance to go for the co-op bridge.

We feel we have that good drive train, so we feel the co-op bridge is important enough to make sure it gets done. We saw in Orlando last weekend that each alliance made sure to do the co-op bridge. Toronto is another story :o .

The defense may come back in for elimination rounds if we make it in. We are also working on a method for the triple balance for elimination rounds.

That's us in a nutshell so far, good luck to all teams!

Does anyone have a link to the pit layout?

Josh Drake 15-03-2012 07:27

Re: 2012 Palmetto Regional

I'm not sure it's posted anywhere. Palmetto is also a hockey rink, so last year there were some places where condensation had formed. There may be more of a gap between the last game and FIRST this year so it will have time to warm up.
Can't wait!
There are 5 teams competing in the Peachtree regional this weekend that will also be coming to North Charleston. Might be worth watching a webcast.

JohnFogarty 15-03-2012 07:32

I'll be watching it while at the SC State FTC Tournament, it'll give me a small idea of what to expect next weekend. Even though I've watched the Alamo, FLR, Israel, San Diego, and BAE regionals on YouTube.

Every team needs good scouts like you. I was glued in front of Orlando last weekend. Competing in week 1 really helped too.

Good luck in FTC!

JohnFogarty 16-03-2012 15:07

I'm a drive team member and so I use them to formulate my strategies and learn from other peoples mistakes to not make them myself.

JohnFogarty 18-03-2012 10:13

After watching Peachtree I'm looking forward to this upcoming week, Metal in Motion and Flash made it all the way to the finals. It should forshadow who will be in the top bracket at Palmetto, we'll see what happens!

-Thanks to those who wished us luck, my freshman drive team was chosen by the first seed captain. Global Force captured another SC FTC state championship!

YETI Robotics, Part of last years North Carolina Regional Winning Alliance is on the attendance list, and from my Youtube Scouting they look to have a REALLY solid robot.

http://www.yetirobotics.org/wp/our-robots/

Team Spork seems to have a beautifully machined robot, taking a quick look here.

The Hitchhikers robot looks interesting from the view of it in their bag on their website.

Hey guys,
Team 1293 is looking forward to an awesome 2012 Palmetto Regional. Last year, a few members tried to start a new tradition of dressing up for the team social on Friday. D5 will be continuing with this this year, and would like to invite all the other teams at Palmetto to do the same. Most of the team will be dressed somewhere between business casual and informal (e.g. dress shirt and slacks to coat and tie, and whatever that means for females). While this is in no way required, we would love to see this happen. Good luck this weekend and don't forget, HAVE FUN!

Re: 2012 Palmetto Regional

Some notions and observations after attending Peachtree:

-1319 came into Peachtree hungry after getting silver at Smoky Mountain. After a second silver? They're going to be starving. I expect them to be even more refined this week.
-343 is not the flashiest shooter out there, but their bridge skills are going to make them pretty potent on the field. If they can find some dancing partners in qualification rounds, expect them to seed well.
-3976 had a rough ride in Georgia, starting with weight and ending with an ineffective shooter that ended the tournament sitting in a corner of their pit. During eliminations, I was frequently in the pit of their neighbor 1771...and they were there the whole time working on improving it for Palmetto. In a smaller field, with a regional's worth of drive time, I could see them in a widget role this week.

As for us, we were running miles better by the end of Peachtree compared to the start. We have a second motor coming from AndyMark to let us speed up our shooter in the hopes of hitting threes reliably (we were stretching for a couple of close ones on the practice field). We added an encoder to that gearbox late Friday in Georgia, which helped our consistency somewhat on Saturday. Our bridge pusher was a non-starter for qualifications, knowing from ChiefDelphi that the forces required for a wheel-on-a-stick device greatly exceeded what a window motor was going to do. At the request of our partners, we slapped together a crude one during lunch on Saturday in the hopes of getting to the far side of the field. Didn't quite pan out there, but bet on us improving it Thursday.

We look forward to making the trip!

Flash 1319 is really looking forward to another great Palmetto Regional! Peachtree was awesome and I'm sure Palmetto will be just as competitive and exciting.

Let's all have a fun and safe time! ::safety::

JohnFogarty 19-03-2012 07:17

@Billfred The planetary Gearboxes for the small motors can handle the stress using less than 25% power. I.E. we use one for our "sticks with wheels."

We may look at that--we're currently looking at a wedge-style deployer in the vein of 1319, 343, or perhaps 1771.

JohnFogarty 19-03-2012 07:38

I'm a fan of that method as well, that's how our 3 FTC teams lowered the bridge in the 2011 game. The only difference was that since in FRC you have bumpers the mechanism couldn't be passive like our FTC ones were it would have to powered I.e 343's method.

Though we haven't run into a problem with our current design yet, and we like to also have the ability to hold the bridge up for making it easier for the other 2 robots to get on.

Woot for the accidental design to be able to do both. Ours lifts up and down and can sweep balls out from under the bridge which is awesome since there is now a new back up camera to see if any balls are there :)

FIRST Team SPORK is looking forward to Palmetto again this year! It attracts a really nice group of teams. We would welcome anyone to stop by our pit with questions, especially the rookies! Regarding the team social, doesn't the planners' timing have us all going directly from the Friday award ceremony to the Citadel, essentially having us all remain in team uniforms?

Hey everyone attending Palmetto, I've got a special request from Team 11 that they really want a few teams down there to lend a hand with.

11 is currently in need of the following items, and since they pretty much leave later tonight or tomorrow for the event, if teams traveling down have these items, please contact 11 or just post up in this thread and I will relay back to them.

*15T pinion for RS775
*P60 gearbox: Stock, Standard Shaft, RS-775 Mount, 16:1

Thanks in advance!

Update: 11 is good on parts. Nevermind folks!

We had time to go back to the hotel for a few minutes last year, I guess it would depend on where you are staying and how long you anticipate it to take to get to The Citadel.

The one in the video was our first design for the bridge tipper. Unfortunately it did not work as well as we hoped it would, so we ended up changing it to the design in this picture.

The spork in that other picture was a cutout from the shooter tower that we decided to give a new life as a power cable wrapper on our battery cart, no spork left behind.

"a few minutes"? Because nearly half our team is young ladies, taking "a few minutes" to dress for dinner is, ... well, not doable. :) We will need to remain in competition uniform for the Citadel in case any other teams are worried about having to change into business casual. We packed the trailer yesterday; it looks like a spider web of bungees and ropes inside there. Let's hope that line of thunderstorms stays away. Safe travels everyone!

Were packing our trailer tonight as were heading down at around 2 tomorrow afternoon. Doing some last minute shooter perfections and decorating with LED's since we withheld it in our 30lbs. Come by and see us in our castle thursday ;)

I wish I had a spork cable wrapper.......

As far as I know we will be staying in our team shirts like last year, there isn't enough time to change into nicer clothes really.

Last year some of the other girls on our team and I had a bunch of fun bringing some spring dresses to competition! We still managed to get to dinner early, and had fun! By no means do we want to make some sort of dress code for the event, but we were hoping to share a memorable tradition with the other Palmetto teams. Our team is quite looking forward to dressing up. We did not mean to make this a hassle for anyone else, as I am sure you can understand. Can't wait to see you in the pits and at the social!

The awards will be over by 5:00 if we stay on schedule (which we have for the past 4 years). The Citadel is a 10 minute drive. And the food line will be 15 minutes long. If you get there by 6:20 all will be fine.

Ok everybody, time to go if you haven't left for North Charleston yet. Some of our team will be getting in late tonight and the rest will trinkle in tomorrow and Friday.

One quick note if you still have time to read CD between now and Friday...
There seems to be a lot of teams complaining about blacklists and teams not co-oping with them. My take is there are teams that may agree to the bridge and then realize after they get behind the glass, that they can't do it for one reason or another. Robots break and time slips away during matches. So before you jump to any conclusions about other teams, try to get their side of the story.
Personally I'll be telling our drivers to focus mainly on the co-op. I'll be talking to you guys in the Q to see who is going up with us. If things work out, great, but if they fail, as long as we both tried, I see that as a partial success.
Good luck to all the teams out there and realize with this size field anybody could be seeded and anybody could be that diamond in the ruff. So scout everyone, and let's not eliminate teams from the eliminations because of the co-op bridge.

6 robots on the bridges

6 robots did it last match on friday....Q-54

As I remember, it, 342 (red) came into the blue side of the court and pushed 2751 (blue) up the ramp, and followed while 3459 stood by to stabilize the ramp and or push back if needed. Then after the coop bridge was balanced, 3459 moved over and did a double balance on the Red bridge with 3489. With 3 seconds to spare.

I am dying to know if it was planned, at least the 342 coop balance method.

I've been calling matches for 8 years and this was the best!!!!!

yeah....we dealt with it up until we found out we were the only working robot in our last two matches, and then lost 2 because of it.

I would like to thank 1319 Flash again for picking us, we were so close we could have taken the whole game. We did the best "we" could.

Re: 2012 Palmetto Regional

Every year, I think I've had the wildest competition ride one can have in FRC.

Once again, fate proves me way, way, way wrong.

The last time "my team" was not playing in Palmetto eliminations was 2006, my last year on 1293. That year, 1293 was the first or second backup team, and a lack of readiness on our part cost us our spot in the show. I thought we were a shoo-in for eliminations, yet the draft wasn't kind to us (not even our traditional last-pick stronghold) and we wound up the first backup team. (Backups weren't kind to us before either; we sat on the dome floor a long time in Atlanta as the #2 backup on Curie our rookie year.)

So we sat. And waited. And, as any team in our position would, hoped the slightly-wicked hope that opportunity would come knocking.

I thought the eight-year-long Palmetto Champions' Curse was going to make it to year nine--no team had ever won it back-to-back before, and it certainly doesn't look good when the only champion that returned is sitting in their pit waiting on the call.

As quarterfinals finished I was in spectator mode, watching matches and checking my phone during a timeout when one of our kids says "Hey, we're out there!" Sure enough, our drive team was carrying the robot onto the field...and we were probably celebrating our good fortune a bit too much in the stands. Match begins, and we don't move. (Turns out it was the ground terminal going to the power distribution board getting loose, the first time all year that's bitten us.) We drop the first one, and yet our group gets a little louder.

After we got ourselves into that hole, things started clicking and this unlikely pairing fires off four straight wins, punching four tickets to St. Louis and making me wonder if my voice will be fully recovered this week. I still can't believe it.

This is a long way of saying THANK YOU 2640, 2059, and 281. Backup teams are the shotgun weddings of FRC, and I'm glad we could help close the deal with you guys. (Additional tips of the hat individually to 2640 and 2059, who had never won any FRC award until this event, and to 281, who received their first regional title since Peachtree 2005. Icing on the cake when you snag Chairman's...)

Also congrats to Hank Bennett, quite possibly the only person around who won both Volunteer of the Year and the Woodie Flowers Finalist Award at the same regional in the same day. With a combo like that, you know he's doing great things in Charleston.

Particular recognition to the DJ, who killed it for two straight days. If someone's got his info, I'd love to poach him for SCRIW...

Thank you to all our online fans. All the tweets and Likes really mean a lot.

Thank you to 343 for loaning us an AM Planetary on Thursday. (I think you guys left before we could return it--we'll reunite you with it, promise.)

And, of course, thank you to The Citadel for a great team social and a really smooth-running event!

Now we just need to find about $5,000 in our couch cushions...

Re: 2012 Palmetto Regional

As a mentor (and field coach) for 281 and on behalf of the whole team, I wanted to thank those out there for their congratulations. Chairman's Award... I still can't believe it. We were (and still are) absolutely beside ourselves.

We were also the robot that broke in the winning alliance. We were wondering after the third quarter final why we couldn't seem to shoot. When we came off the field the answer was obvious -- we had snapped a steel shaft on our ball feed in half. After spending a couple minutes trying to get it apart for a quick repair, it was obvious we couldn't go with a working shooter and didn't want the alliance to waste its timeout only to have a non-shooting robot out there, so we pulled out. Great job 2815 filling in and helping the alliance to the win. It felt a bit weird being out there with the alliance in the finals, and the only thing you can do is cheer them on; but that's what we did. Thank you teams 2640 and 2059 for having the confidence to pick us for your alliance.

This was our first regional of 2012, and I was surprised by the even-ness of the competition and standings, so congratulations to all the teams at Palmetto.

Also, thank you to all the folks both in-front and behind the scenes who organized and put on Palmetto regional. Even if you think you only had a small part in the event, consider yourself thanked. You helped put on an awesome event.

Finally, has anyone posted the group team picture of the 4 team winning alliance and the chairmans team picture? It all happened so quickly, I'm not sure we have any (I certainly don't).

On behalf of all the members of FRC team Flash 1319, I would like thank 1102 and 1758 for being great alliance partners. I thought we had a great alliance, but it just was not meant to be.

Thanks to everyone at the regional for making it a super exciting event with lots of memorable moments. Congrats to all the winners and to everyone who came to play.

I'd like to send a special shout out to our new friends 4074 who are well on their way to being a shining example of safety. If y'all want any pictures, email me at zenden2@winthrop.edu and I'll be sure to send them your way.

I have to agree. At Peachtree, there was a very clear top two with 1311 and 1771, followed by a reasonably-sized pack, then the uncompetitive teams. At Palmetto, there was nobody head and shoulders above anyone else and a ginormous pack. I told our team that I couldn't even call it at alliance selection.

As for the photo: I know someone from the regional committee (she was in a Palmetto Regional polo) got some photos--some folks from the Hitchhikers probably got some as well. Hopefully someone can share on ChiefDelphi!

WOOO 1539!!!!! and a great job to all teams that went to this regional :D
as for round 54, the 6 robot balance was in a sense planned, but we didn't know if it would work :P we wanted the double and we had organized the co-op, but still, when it actually happened it was just beautiful :D

Look here. I was unable to download them. Might be copyrights. But there are some really nice candid shots of some teams including 281.

Congrats to all the winners at Palmetto yesterday. We had a great and exciting time at our "home" regional. We are very proud of our students as they practiced continuous improvement throughout the competition. Many visits to the practice field, mechanical and software tweaks resulted in a nice scoring machine and a #3 seed. Thanks to our alliance partners Team 11 (MORT) and Team1225 Gorrillaz for teaming up with us in the 2 highest scoring and most competitive matches in the elims. Props to 1876, 3242, and 2974 for just outscoring us, well done!

Hopefully the students have seen the results and value of all their hard work and will continue to help build the program. Nice progress from a second year team that placed last at Palmetto last year. It was nice to have so many other teams take notice of our students' efforts and come by our pit on Saturday morning. We look forward to seeing all of our new friends at Palmetto next year.

Best Regards and Good Luck to All at the remaining regionals and at Championships.

Thanks for the link. It takes a few clicks, but you can get them downloaded (there is a Creative Commons license on them). Start with the (+) at the top right of the picture, then view all sizes. There's a download link from there.

Now that I've had to day to settle down I just want to say that the Palmetto Regional was an awesome experience for 2059. Most of our students are rookies this year and this was their first event ever. It was the team's first time making eliminations and the first regional award that we've ever won. So overall I think it was a pretty good weekend.

A big thanks to 2640 for picking us with the second pick even with so many other great teams still available. 281, it was too bad you guys couldn't make it all the way but you guys were great while we had you and your drivers made great cheerleaders during the finals. Congrats on Chairman's and lets go for a second regional at NC. 2815, I was surprised that you guys weren't picked but I was glad you were there when we needed a backup. Without your consistent 2 point scoring I don't think we win the regional. Good luck at Champs and we'll see you at SCRIW.

As for the picture I know a couple of our parents got them and I'll try and get it from them when we meet on Tuesday and then post it on CD.

Congrats to the winning alliance.

2640 you all had a consistent great robot, please take no offense to our denying you in allinace selections we just had different plans and it seemed to work out better for you anyways. Look forward to seeing you all again soon.

343 congrats on your second finalists you all have another great robot this year.

281 congrats on your chairman's award win, we will have to get together sometime and have you take a look at our program so that we may reach your level some day.

Thanks to 1102 and 1758 we gave it our best.

I would also like to thank everyone whoever gave us compliments on our robot's performance as well as the nice comments we got about our pit setup.

A real "Cinderella story" at Palmetto was rookie team 4261, the Raptors (Academic Magnet H.S., Charleston, SC). Like all rookie teams they were delighted just to have a working robot at Palmetto. Never in their wildest dreams did the Raptors think they would be a 5th ranked team and have to select partners for the quarter finals.

I don't think it was luck. They proved a simple reliable robot that could quickly climb the ramp and balance was competative with much more complex machines and more experienced teams. Watch out for the Raptors in '13!

Hey if anyone from 4075 is reading this or knows how to contact them We at 281 still have their retro reflexive tape and would like to give it back. So if anyone can get them to contact us that would be great

In a moment of inspiration, I broke out my iPhone to shoot the finals from 2815's perch in the upper deck. It's not perfect (and yes, I was losing my voice--if you were in our position, you would too), but here it is:

Bill,
We are very grateful to 2815 and can't wait to reconnect with you guys in St. Louis. We made a great team with you guys steadily pouring in the 2's, 2640 and 2059 putting us out front in hybrid/autonomous mode scoring, and double balancing in the end...we made a great team.

I don't myself, but do you have any connections with any other Horry County teams? I think 1287 was helping the rookies that sprang up in their district.

JohnFogarty 09-04-2012 00:00

Anyone want to help a lone software guy who wants to see champs one last time for his senior year?

My tech team won as a second pick and qualified for the non-existent chance waiting list for FTC champs.... so there's like zero chance of me getting a last competition up there, but I've always been a fan of wandering the pits helping people and watching the competitions.

Let me know if you have anything please!
