I see no rules against it. Would you be using it verbatum, or using it as a model; something to base your designs off of.

Just make sure it's ok with the artist. Some of them can get pretty touchy when people use their artwork against their wishes even the ones who create stock images have very specific rules about what you can and cannot do with their images.

Re: 2012 animation award question

"All entry materials submitted by a Team Representative or his or her team must be and contain the original work of that Team Representative or his or her team. If not, the entry may be rejected or disqualified. Participants may be required to submit proof of the originality of their entries and proof that they have all necessary rights in any music or other content used in their entries. "

That's on Page 2, section 4 Entry Requirements of the rules document.

and on the last paragraph

"Note regarding content: Animations that use copyrighted music or other content without written permission from the legal copyright owner will be disqualified. All entries that indicate that they are using copyrighted music or other content may be required to provide proof of permission in written
format from the rightful owner (s) prior to judging. Any disputes about whether or not copyrighted music or other content was improperly used will be by Sponsor in its sole and absolute discretion. Should Sponsor identify any improper use at any time, Sponsor may disqualify the applicable entry, even if such entry has been initially selected as a winner."

Seems to me that music, yes. Models, no (but that might just be my interpretation)
Hope that answers your question!
