Camera Distance

We are a 2nd year team who are questioning vision tracking.

We want to use our camera to track the top scoring target at all times (when the system is engaged at least). But since we are planning on shooting from outside of the key we are worried about how far away we can track. Our launching system can hurdle the ball there without a doubt. But how far away can we get before the camera won't track accurately.

If some other team who is tracking from that far away do some testing if you have a chance and let us know.

FYI, we're shooting from about 24 feet

Check out a program called Robo Realm
http://www.roborealm.com/

It is made by a FIRST robotics mentor and you can get some free licenses if you email him

Re: Camera Distance

Using an Axis 206 camera, an LED ring light from FIRST Choice, and the Rectangular Target code, we get consistent detection of the target from the middle of the field, and occasional detection from the far alliance wall.

This is our experience as well. Depending on how well you calibrate, tracking from mid field should be easy. Beyond that requires close attention to your environment and how much data you choose to send to the system.
