Team 1025 - 2012 Robot - Mr. Big Shot

After looking around at all the robots being unveiled, I'm noticing that ours is a little different than most. I figured that you guys might find it interesting. Enjoy.

Some basic collecting and shooting

I didn't take any movies of going up the bridge, but the front "basket" is able to push it down pretty easily for us to drive up. The wedges on each side allow us to go over the bump pretty easily too.

Impi Robotics from Ferndale High School, MI
We'll be at Waterford and Livonia. See you there.

I love that linkage

Really cool! Anyone else notice it sounds like a gun in the video?

this is by far the coolest shooter I've seen so far this year. the windback mechanism is nothing short of ingenious

1625 had a virtually identical unit on their 2010 bot. it was used to actuate their kicker.

It started on the 2008 bot

What a cool design, although i can foresee problems with shooting that low, i am astounded by how compact that robot looks.

Never saw the 2008 bot up close... I was a Freshman in HS back then... My first year of FIRST... knowing the basic concept of that bot, I am not surprised...

Wow, cool! At first glance, it appears to be a "basic" design, but I really like it for its simplicity an effectiveness. I especially like how the collector doubles as the storage device. The only drawback I see to this design is that it may be hard to aim the robot with just the drive train. Just looking at the video though, it looks like that may not be an issue.

Call me a boring person, but the creative idea may have dragged down the potential for an even better robot. Creative solutions are a plus and are quite effective at attracting attention, but with that reload time and the threat of being shut down by effective defense, I am a little reluctant on this bot.

Thanks for the comments. We really tried to go with a "simple yet effective" robot this year so that we could finish up early to be able to practice and work out many of the bugs before our first competition (this has been a problem for us the last couple years).

We can't take credit for the shooter pull-back mechanism. I've seen it on a few different robots. I think that we did a good job implementing it and getting it to fit in a pretty tight space under the shooter.

As for people defending us while we're shooting, we were worried about that too and tested it out. We tried to determine how close a robot would have to be to be able to defend us. Deceivingly, they would actually have to be pretty close for the ball to be able to hit them (about 2 feet away for a full 5 foot tall robot). If they are going to be that close to us while we're in the key, they risk us just driving forward (with our rear end still in the key) and touching them. We're also just thinking of pulling the surgical tubing a little tighter and shooting from further back in the key so that it's not even a possibility.

Ah, the "1625 linkage". It powered 1625 to a regional win in 2008, an Einstein appearance in 2010, and 341 to two regional wins in 2010 (and I'm sure that's an incomplete list).

Needless to say, I'm a fan of the design :)
