2012 Virginia Regionl
Considering the long standing history of the Virginia regional at VCU, I'm mildly appalled there has not been a thread started yet. So I shall get the ball on the court.
Give a shout out if your coming, wish you could come, or other associated goodness. Team 1610 will be there for their 8th year of competition. |
Re: 2012 Virginia Regionl
We would love to come down to Virginia, but because of the new district system, we are unable to. 1676 wishes the best of luck to everyone down there!!
Funding and time permitting, I would definitely come down to the Virginia Regional. For the last two years I have been there, I have had an absolute blast. The way it was run was excellent, there were great people there, and the teams performed phenomenally. I sincerely wish I could come by. Assuming that there is a webcast, I'll certainly be watching the competition. Shout out to VA!! Always a fun regional. Good luck to everyone!!! :) |
Re: 2012 Virginia Regionl
Team Talon 1598 will be there again this year. We look forward to getting together with 1610 once again -- as well as all the other great teams there.

Re: 2012 Virginia Regional
Anyone know if this will be on the web, or what it would take to make sure it is on the web?
I wrote this up a bit ago, but was reluctant to call for bot reveals since ours will probably not have an official pre-competition reveal. Seeing as this thread has started: Here's your lineup for THE Virginia Regional coming at you in its traditional Week 3 home (Week 6 last year was so weird...) While one of the longest active and most populous events, it's a bit of an open playing field this year. Two regional champions, and five of the top 10 will not be returning from 2011. The New Jersey Invasion takes on a new form in team 1923, 2009 NJ and 2011 CT Regional Champs. In addition, we will have six rookies and another formidable team: 1699, the 2011 Chesapeake Champs. My favorite part is the crossover between VA in Week 3 and NC in Week 6. Teams 122, 339, 401, 422, 435, 1086, 1598, 2363, and 2890 will be setting up for a "round one" of sorts. I'll add in team reveals down here as I find them or are posted on this thread/the forum. 122 NASA Knights 339 Kilroy 346 RoboHawks 384 Sparky 384 388 Maximum Oz 401 Hokie Guard 405 The Chameleons 422 Mech Tech Dragons 435 Robodogs 539 Titans 540 TALON 540 Godwin Robotics 614 Night Hawks 617 Enginerds 619 Cavalier Robotics 900 Zebracorns 1033 Team CLUTCH 1086 Blue Cheese 1095 RoboCavs 1137 Rocket Sauce 1262 the STAGS 1418 Vae Victis 1522 DOTM - Defenders of the Multiverse 1539 Blue Eagle Robotics 1541 MidloCANics 1598 Team Talon 1599 Atlee Raiders 1610 B.O.T. Re: 2012 Virginia Regionl
The other thing is the number of teams going to regionals before: 2. (I think is right.)
That means while we're a third week, only two teams are gonna be there with first hand experience of the game. Competition: Keeps the field more level. FTA: Means more possible headaches on Practice day.:yikes: |
Re: 2012 Virginia Regionl
1885 is looking forward to a very exciting competition at VCU. We've built a bot that will hopefully maintain our prowess at consistent and powerful autonomous routines, so look forward to us starting tele-op with 36 points every match we get compatible partners ;)
We'd also like to find a partner who can help us break the 60-point autonomous barrier. Any takers? |
Re: 2012 Virginia Regionl
Blue Cheese is really excited to start off our 10th86 (our 10th year) at the Virginia Regional! The field looks really good this year and we can't wait to hit the field! Pictures and videos of our robot, Blue Yarg (A tribute to our 4 years as The Pirates of the Black Pearl), are available in CD-Media. We're also going to be bringing our practice robot to the Virginia FTC State Championship this weekend and would be happy to take you on a tour of the robot or answer any questions! Blue Cheese can't wait to see everyone in under three weeks!

not a whole lot of info on the VA field this year. Guess we will have to wait until next Thursday to see what everyone has got in the bag.

Re: 2012 Virginia Regionl
I'm sorry to say that the link for the robot of 2106 is a sad misconception. It is a render of our original idea, and hopefully the one used in the robot rumble in the fall. Our actual robot is... well... I don't really know for sure. :D I think what we have on the field will be a surprise even to ourselves, we're kinda making it up as we go along right now. Anyway, 2106 will definitely be attending, and we look forward to a good, friendly competition there.

Two days to go:
Trying not to get too excited. It not workin' though! :yikes: Can not wait to see how everyone else tackled this years problem. FIRST Team 1086 is looking forward to some stiff and healthy coopertition! |

(The OCD in me wants the title fixed before I melt down)
Why isn't it Thursday yet? I'm psyched. And nervous. |
Re: 2012 Virginia Regionl
Man, looking at the list of teams brings back great memories of friends and awesome teams. I'll miss you guys this year, but wish you all the best of luck.
Other than their very strict 'outside water bottles' rules, VCU is one of the nicest venues in FIRST, with plenty of room for 60+ teams and lots of awesome competition. And the best jerk chicken around (just across the street). |
Re: 2012 Virginia Regionl
Pre-competition jitters setting in now. Look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow.
Some additional robot video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8I6s...1&feature=plcp Testing and calibration video: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list...3&feature=plcp We have been optimizing our shooter vision code, and preparing parts for a shorter tower. Boxed up the replacement tower parts last night. We kept adding stuff to the scale until we used every bit of the 30 lb witholding allowance. Hopefully the tower transplant will go well tomorrow morning. It was a major strategic decision to go for the tower transplant, taking the risk that surgical complications may ensue. After watching lots of match video, we think the improved performance during bridge balancing will be worth the risk. (Fingers crossed.) |
Re: 2012 Virginia Regionl
We are doing similar Todd. Tomorrow for 2106 will be spent performing surgery and attaching a shooter, arm, and drivetrain. Similar to our Breakaway year, only a motor mount and a tiny piece of the frame that is in the bag will actually be used for tournament. The rest is in our 30 lb withholding allowance.

Re: 2012 Virginia Regionl
Breakaway: you enter competition with a drive base, and you walk out finalists. /whatever
Going to go pick up shirts this afternoon, and we will pack up our car around 5. We're only a few blocks away from the venue, so we'll show up to unload whenever between 6 and 8. Maybe we will see some of you there! |
Re: 2012 Virginia Regionl
The trailer is loaded -- vans are full of gas -- kids excited -- we leave in less than 2 hours for a 3 hour tour up 360. Can't wait. Team Talon 1598.
ps -- is there a webcast this year - the school wants to watch Friday :) |
Re: 2012 Virginia Regionl
Not sure what team(s) it was that helped today, but whoever helped us get our robot back on the cart the THREE times it fell while loading up, 2106 is eternally grateful. That could have easily turned into a ripped bag and that would not have been fun.

Re: 2012 Virginia Regionl
Did everyone enjoy our smoke display in the last practice match? And you thought that last year's stalled minibots were fun...
So, it turns out that our turret is so quick it keeps right on going when it hits the limit switches. Those limit switches are supposed to prevent the spinning wheel from contacting the turret chain sprocket shielding. When the turret drives the side of the spinning wheel into a lexan shield, the shooter slows way down, motor current goes way up (driven by PID velocity control on the shooter wheel shaft encoder), and much smoke is released. Happily, we were very prepared for such a possibility. Swapping out the shooter drive module for our spare was quick and easy. Our practice match also showed that the pneumatic cylinders actuating the bridge arm were too small. We started out with 1.5" diameter cylinders, and downsized to .75" for weight reasons. Since shortening the tower, we have the weight to use, so we swapped back to the original cylinders. No more wimpy bridge actuation. Good luck to all in the quals tomorrow. |
Re: 2012 Virginia Regionl
Todd,
We've all been there. If you need anything to get up and running tomorrow, you know where we are. The match schedule threw me a real treat. I get to play a match with my first FIRST team! :] |
Re: 2012 Virginia Regionl
Team 1598 had a fun day today. It looks like we have some fun matches tomorrow. Hopefully we can keep going where we were good and get better where we need to. We wish everyone the best of luck and look forward to a great day at a great regional. Thanks pit admin and the inspectors for getting everyone off to a great start today

Re: 2012 Virginia Regionl
If anything breaks for anyone, our shop is a few blocks away and we have tons of motors and things we have never used before. Stop by and let us know if we can help!
|
Re: 2012 Virginia Regionl
I want to give a quick shout-out to our superstar sophomore Zachary Allen, who decided that even though we were tipped over in essentially a 1v3 match, he wouldn't settle for a loss. Cross-court shot tied it up 8-8 and gave us the .500 we wanted in what I think is the toughest seeding schedule we have ever been given.
Even though we have had some disappointments in working with some teams on the white bridge, we look forward to getting on and balancing it in at least one match tomorrow. Good luck to everyone! |
Re: 2012 Virginia Regionl
And of course the field works perfectly all day Thursday, then falls apart first thing Friday morning and takes 45 minutes to fix.
After that, though, it's been a blast so far. See everyone tomorrow! :D |
Re: 2012 Virginia Regionl
I'll get to thank you's and all of that later, but I heard 1262 may not be able to make it to Championships because of the budget. If you're reading this and you're 1262 or someone who can reach the STAGS, talk to the regional committee to see what they can do to help ASAP.
I'd love to see you guys again after we take North Carolina ;D |
Re: 2012 Virginia Regionl
Congratulations to 1885 for earning the Virginia Regional Chairman's Award. It is well deserved for such a great team.
Congratulations to 384 on earning the Engineering Inspiration Award; you are a true inspiration. And, congrats to the winning alliance 384, 435, and 1262 |

What a wild ride. Thanks to 1885 for choosing us for their alliance. Also thanks to team 1418 for the pneumatic cylinder for our bridge actuator. You saved me a 2 1/2 hour round trip drive, Thursday night, to retrieve a spare from our shop.
Let me be the first to link to some video. Here you can find a playlist of the video I shot to aid in troubleshooting between matches. It's all closeup of our side of the field, so may be of limited interest to others except for our match partners. More video will be forthcoming. |
Re: 2012 Virginia Regionl
I'd like to thank everyone for making a fantastic Regional this weekend. Special thanks go out to my field staff (family!) that work hard and play hard to make the event a success; you're the best!
Much love, and I'll see you at the next event. Matt |

Re: 2012 Virginia Regionl
2363 figured out something no other team could do -- use their camera for active target tracking from the key. The jumbo screen and lit advertisements behind the backboards prevented the possibility until Triple Helix figured out a workaround. They fixed it between Friday and Saturday and hit a hot streak. Being 3rd seed, I was worried 1st or 2nd seed noticed. We basically summarized and shortened our Friday lists, then started re-capturing data from scratch Saturday morning. About halfway through Saturday matches, we knew we wanted them and didn't look back. All of us were very glad we were fortunate to partner with you for a second year in a row. Teams in NC should watch out ;)
Thanks to 1793 for coming through in the clutch for a heart-stopping last second double balance. We were slow to get to the bridge due to a spring-assisted lowering arm that was off its chain and messing with our drive train in QF3. They also had a working autonomous while proving to be incredible defenders. Thanks to you both for being amazing partners! We were so incredibly close to surviving the shootouts in our 3 QF matches. Some interesting notes -- - We asked the powers that be to turn off the jumbo tron screen or the lights in the advertisements with no success. To combat this, 2363 found that a brighter camera light combined with an offset scoring position that put the advertisements just barely out of the camera's FOV provided the right conditions for NI's libraries to find the shapes. - The balls in Quals all had varying levels of ball squishiness ranging from really squishy to WTF squishy. Ironically the first 2 balls we were handed in Elims were as almost as hard as actual basketballs. - We brought an extra hoop, backboard, pole, and base to calibrate our distances with. Doing this helped quite a bit, and we hope the teams who took advantage of it found it useful. Hopefully other Regional/District events will be forgiving enough to allow the 20'x10' space needed for such a setup in lieu of a full practice field. - Inspections this year were the smoothest ever. It turned out to be a really great idea to put 2 inspectors in each aisle. As for the RCA win: Here's to all of the current students, ILITE alumni, current and former mentors who put in the thousands of hours required to make such an expansive program. You should be proud; it wouldn't have been possible without you! |

I want to let everyone know that if we get allied with you, you'll have a hard time matching the quality of 346 and 1541. It's the greatest group of people in FIRST, outside of my team of course, that I have had the pleasure of working with. Sorry we couldn't help you win a blue banner this year 1541, but take Zooey wherever you can go, she's a bot to be proud of. 346, your communications problems should be under the bridge (game puns!) for DC, and I see you guys coming out of there with the big W. Congrats to Stags, Sparky, and Robodawgs. You guys were awesome. Wish we could have gotten on the bridge in match 2 or not tipped in match 1 so we could have had a real go, but it is what it is. To my teammates, mentors, our sponsors, and whoever is reading this, I'm so proud of the work you all have put into the team so far this season. When I challenged you all to put the best product possible on the court this year, I had no idea it would turn out to be the high-flying, wheelie-kicking, big-scoring masterpiece we call Orion (or internally, Operation RedPanda). We were bogged down with a tough seeding schedule, but you all held faith, cheered the whole team on, and were with us through incredible highs and lows this weekend. Shoutout to our driver who said to me during a match "Let me try something," then proceeded to pick up the front of the robot, and drive it forward onto the bridge. The new design capability of wheelie dropping made our weekend. A special shoutout to an unexpected friend I made this year. See you in North Carolina, but first off, try to relax for a few days. We have a secret project to make sure our robot stabilizes in the rankings and turns the Dorton Arena upside down in April with a high score and a big W to bring back to Richmond. Attention teams 122, 339, 401, 435, 900, 1086, 2363, 2890 and all potential challengers from other regionals: we're waiting for you. |
Re: 2012 Virginia Regionl
Triple Helix, FRC team 2363, would like to thank team 1885, iLITE, for the opportunity to work with you yet again. Let's keep it up -- maybe the third time will be the charm! And, as others have noted, many congratulations for the RCA. It is well-deserved! Now we just have to figure out a way on our side to meet up with you again at CMP.
To the Norview Pilots, team 1793, thanks for being such great partners, too. We really enjoyed playing with you guys. We wish that we'd had the opportunity to play a few more matches! To teams 1610 and 3359, it was great being next to you guys in the pits. What great robots each of you had! It was fun to have Franklin, Newport News, and Portsmouth all lined up in a row like that. Sorry we didn't have more time to chat. To our old friends at Sparky and on teams 435 and 1262, congratulations for a great tournament! You guys were totally awesome in the elimination matches!! To all the other award winners, well done and well deserved! A special shout out goes to my daughter and 2363 team captain, Rachel Wilbur, for being selected as a Dean's List Finalist. I'm wondering if there are any other father-daughter/son WFFA-Dean's List Finalist award winners out there. It's quite the honor and I'm pleased as I can be to be sharing it with Rachel, who has been my right hand for the past four years. I don't really know what I'm going to do without her next year... |

We would also like to congratulate team 1885 ILITE Robotics on winning Chairmans. We hope to see you all at Worlds! |
Re: 2012 Virginia Regionl
On a personal note:
I wanted to congratulate team 2106 for their first elimination appearance. You had the most consistent autonomous at the regional and a great pick for the 7th seed alliance. Keep up the great work and continue to grow. You made your old coach proud! To my new team: what i wild ride! Thank you for being patience as I learn the ropes of guiding a large team through a build season. You are great group of young adults, mentors and alums. Together, we are going to be great things. Time to share our cheesiness with our NC FIRST family! |
Re: 2012 Virginia Regionl
On behalf of FIRST Team 1086, I would like to congratulate and thank the following people and teams:
1885- After your two Engineering Inspiration awards last year, you were more than due for your first Regional Chairman's award. Your team has exemplified what Virginia FRC should be, it was more that deserved which is saying a lot considering some of the feats of other teams (388- getting studies that show FIRST improves math and science scores, 2363- reaching out as far as Ellen DeGeneres, 122- going on an outreach mission to Europe)! 384- For those of you who didn't have the pleasure of seeing this team up close, they'll amaze you. We were lucky enough to be pitted across the aisle which gave us a great opportunity to see some of our former mentors and alumni! They un-bagged nothing but a frame and drive train, literally, on Thursday morning and were regional champions with a beautiful, fully working robot by Saturday evening. Congratulations on the Regional Win and the Engineering Inspiration Award. 1262 & 435-Your teams played awesome with 384, both of your teams really deserved the win with the way you played in the eliminations. 2402- It was amazing to get to know your team throughout the build season and it was amazing to get to hang-out with you guys throughout the tournament. Your team of 4 to 5 students and 3 mentors rising to be the 7th seeded alliance captain was amazing. We are so happy we got to take a little part in such an amazing story! 2890-Thank you so much for selecting us to be assimilated into your alliance. Sorry that we weren't able to get a long run in eliminations but while it lasted our team much enjoyed the spirit and enthusiasm your team included us in behind the alliance stations, the spirit award was much deserved! 900- We were so excited to get you guys in the third round and can't wait to see your team again in North Carolina! Liz Smith- After our terrible experience with connection last year we owe a lot to the FTA that kept us communicating the whole regional! Also we loved the robo-towels you and Alex made for us! For the rest of you who haven't ordered any yet: they are so affordable, stylish, functional, and spirited so you should get yourself some! I am proud to say that my cheesehead now has one of the TPD stickers you gave us on it! All the Volunteers- I gained new appreciation for all the volunteers after our team (along with our friends, 540) stayed after for an hour to help them break the field down, in an hour we only got about half way done. They work so hard through the whole tournament including for hours after the final match is over to make the regional and the one after it a success. Without these volunteers the tournament would not even be close to the same! I am positive I have forgotten many people who deserve congratulations and our thanks, so if that applies to you I'm so sorry! We can't wait to hit the field again in Raleigh in less than 3 weeks, our robot will be really different but we'll be the same old team (so if you need help on Thursday don't hesitate to find us)!
