Team Code Orange 3476 Presents "Pipeline" our 2012 robot.
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fpi9XnwSrpQ Had a fun build season! Not bad for a 2nd year team if I do say myself. Btw, we weigh 111lbs Feel free to ask questions! :D |
Re: Team Code Orange 3476 2012 Robot Showcase "Pipeline"
That's a great robot you got there. Very impressive especially for a second year team.

Re: Team Code Orange 3476 2012 Robot Showcase "Pipeline"
It seems to me like you just added a 6 to the end of your bumpers for a laugh because there is no way a second year team built such a good robot. You guys are going to be a team to watch this year.

Re: Team Code Orange 3476 2012 Robot Showcase "Pipeline"

Bravo! Great robot! I'm majorly impressed that a second year team is able to keep the robot so far away from 120 pounds! We're a 13 year team, and STILL have problems doing that some years! Great job, and I can't wait to see you in the regionals!

Re: Team Code Orange 3476 2012 Robot Showcase "Pipeline"
I am so proud of are team and how far have come since last year :yikes:

Re: Team Code Orange 3476 2012 Robot Showcase "Pipeline"
a few quick questions:
% brainstormed by students? % designed be students? % machined by students? % assembled by students? % debugged by students? How many students u got? How close to the budget limit were u? How many students did you "swipe" fro other teems? This looks professional, good job to all involved |

Designed: 100% students (with help learning inventor) Machined: We only really have one full time mentor, Andrew Hedge. The students did everything but the tig welding and a few pieces that had to be precision milled. (for liability reasons students weren't allowed into Andrew's work where he machined the pieces.) Assembled: 100% students (The mentors was there helping, but only making sure we didn't do anything stupid.) Debugging: 100% students. We have about 13 students that show up regularly. I am not sure about our budget but I believe we were very well under $4000 for the robot alone. I (Austin) am the only student that has been on another FRC team while in high school with team 2493 my freshman year. (another student had been part of another team but not as an official high school student.) Andrew competed with the "Thunderbots" 980 in high school. He has now graduated from college and mentors us. Thanks! |
Re: Team Code Orange 3476 2012 Robot Showcase "Pipeline"
As one of the "part-time" mentors for Code Orange, I can say that yes, this machine is 100% student designed and assembled, and as Austin said, almost entirely student machined as well. The students on the team are extremely self-motivated and put in very long hours to put this together.

Re: Team Code Orange 3476 2012 Robot Showcase "Pipeline"
Yeah, what George said.
If you want to see a truly INSPIRED team that is probably the best representation of what FIRST is all about, check out Code Orange. They are the real deal and an inspiration to teams at all levels of FIRST. Check them out when you are in St. Louis. They will be more than happy to share the Code Orange magic with you. BTW, they are mostly home schooled students who work out of the mentor's garage. As George said, they are highly motivated, enthusiastic students and I am proud to call all of them friends. |

Re: Team Code Orange 3476 2012 Robot Showcase "Pipeline"
Great to hear. I simply asked because I know teams (won't give specifics, they know who they are) where the mentors do significant quantities of the work and in the end make a great result but not student built. I was simply asking because I feel the the more the students did, the better. Great job all and I hope to be able to compete with you.
Edit: And It also gives the teams I ask it to a chance to brag it up in a well deserved manner |

Re: Team Code Orange 3476 2012 Robot Showcase "Pipeline"
We have 15 registered kids, and three of them are in eighth grade. We probably have 9 or 10 "core" students. Austin and I are the only kids from other teams, and this team is unique in it's %100 student design, brainstorm, assembly, debugging, outreach, and fundraising. I wish we could have machined the robot, but the team didn't have the liability and access to tig-weld and lathe like what I did on my much older, established team. One of Code Orange's mentors spent the time to machine some parts from my CAD drawings at his work. Code Orange students jigsawed, band-sawed, snipped, hacked, sanded, chop-sawed, painted and did whatever else they could to make a great robot from the team's home garage!
Thanks for asking- Student work is an important trait to have on a FIRST team! Malachi (master CADder hopeful :] ) __________Awards__________ --2011-- 2nd seed Seattle 2nd seed Portland Engineering Inspiration (St. Louis) --2012-- Excellence in Engineering 1st seed San Diego (St. Louis) |

Re: Team Code Orange 3476 2012 Robot Showcase "Pipeline"
i really like this bot, im not bashing creativity or anything, but one of the teams we picked for our alliance twice this years has an almost identical design. their robot is really good and their a 7th year team, so i think thats a complement. theirs was really good, and from what i can see of yours, so is pipeline, so congratulations!!!!

Re: Team Code Orange 3476 2012 Robot Showcase "Pipeline"
the video says that you used a west coast drivetrain, but unless I'm mistaken, WCD refers specifically to one where the drive axles are supported only on one end, without any extension of the frame around them. the benefit of this is that the wheels can be placed as far as possible apart, giving a robot better turning and stability.

You may be right, but not according to the FIRST wiki: http://www.firstwiki.net/index.php/Drive_train |
