San Diego's gonna be so much fun this year! I can't wait to watch the webcast! Wish I could come down, but then again, I've got my own robot to work on. :) I wanna see 1538's robot in particular, and 399 looks like an awesome team this year.

Will be in San Diego with Rookie Team 4276. Can't wait!

The team is anxiously waiting to do some driver tryouts during the practice rounds Friday (they never got much chance to drive it during the build season).

Can someone remind me if robots are allowed on the field for Friday practice rounds if the bot has not *officially* passed all inspection items yet?

Also, in the past practice rounds have sometimes been as long as 5 minutes, are these variety going to be used?

The "At the events" section of the manual covers your questions.

You do not have to be inspected to practice in your scheduled practice matches, but must have bumpers.

You must be inspected if you want to enter the filler line for an unscheduled practice match.

Work is done, packing the trailer tonight and heading for SD tomorrow AM. Will be bringing 5 robots with me in the trailer. Field setup and early load in tomorrow and then competition all weekend. Woo hoo!

P.S. the five robots are from teams in the Inland Empire coming to San Diego.

Re: 2012 San Diego

It's scouting meeting time! ;)

We had a fun day of qualifying. Our autonomous shooting is working well, our teleop has been a little bit iffy. We did find a cause, which is falling off the bridge and having the camera mount get slightly bent. Once we figured it out, things got better again.

We did a couple coop bridge attempts and didn't make either of them. The balls under the bridges make things interesting, especially with a "wide" robot, you need to be careful not to try to drive onto a bridge if it's not going down all the way, or you can flip over pretty easily.

We've seen some great play by quite a few robots, 1661 and 599 bridge work is really good. 3008 is an amazing scorer in teleop.

We did get to make some repairs to our bridge arm, our pneumatic "lock" got bent and we decided to replace it with a mechanical one...the second attempt actually survived a couple matches intact.

It's kinda weird having the event a day late. Hope you all tune in to the webcast Sunday!

Re: 2012 San Diego

Busy day of qualifying, we had our fair share of issues but auton was nailed and teleop is getting better every match.

The balls under the bridges do pose a problem, as well as tipping over... we did once in practice but no damage was done.

Some great teams out there. Can't wait for elims!

I saw them a few times, Cows weren't doing a lot, 399 shooting is kind of touchy...high lob from a distance, it's a tricky shot.

But I didn't watch nearly enough matches today.

They're obviously placing the opposing teams under a false sense of security. Then when they least expect it....BAM! The score is 100-0.

Seriously, I think the problem is their cameras aren't adjusted to the light, or their shooters aren't adjusted. It's only a matter of time until they find the right numbers to use in their code, and they'll be kicking butt like the 399 and 1538 we know.

Re: 2012 San Diego

Defense is non existent, to easy to foul. So crossing over the bridge/bump isn't common.
Balancing is a game thrower, 10-20 pts so far is quite hard to match with just shooting.
Auton was easier then I expected, and with 2-3 shooters it is an easy 12+ points.
Shooting in telop seems to be the hit and miss among teams, some can do it well but quite a few don't. Shooting while against the fender seems like a good option for many teams, our current plan, and camera tracking seems to be something saved for CMP.

GRT808 04-03-2012 01:28

Re: 2012 San Diego

I was a bit surprised of the scoring going on in teleop. Balancing on the bridge however seems to be more efficient with single robots rather than double. Many of the attempts to balance the bridge with two robots usually end up failing, the lone balancing robot sways the match considerably. We are also a bit surprised of our robot's and drivers performance during the competition. We switched our design from a double roller shooter to a hood and it works amazing. Curious to see how some teams like 399 and 1538 perform after their tweaking. Having fun this competition and looking forward to the rest of the matches tomorrow!

Why has there been no update on the awards in San Diego on the FIRST website?

DCA Fan 04-03-2012 09:49

Re: 2012 San Diego

No idea Ed, we entered them into the system yesterday. Anyways, here's the awards list so far:

WFFA Bill Berggren
Volunteer Sandra Hodge
Imagery 2839
Control 702
Creativity 2485
Engineering Excel 3476
Entrepreneurship 3008
Rookie Inspiration 4322
Website 1372

Current top score is 40 for SD, with 29 qualifying matches to go.

The dates here are off by one day...we're finishing up today.

I don't know about the award page not being updated...it should reflect the awards given out yesterday? but it does not.

I'm working on putting video of a few matches on youtube. They're kind of NERDS-centric.

1661 was supported by something else, it looked like the field barrier. But the question now is why was it counted as a two-bot balance?

That bridge shouldn't have been called as balanced at all.

Chinmay 04-03-2012 17:02

Re: 2012 San Diego

Hopefully there will be some explanation as to why 2 bots counted and not 0. I think it should have been 0 because of

"A Bridge will count as Balanced if it is within 5° of horizontal and all Robots touching it are fully supported by it."

When the final score is assessed per [G37], a Balanced Alliance Bridge will earn points based on the number of Alliance Robots completely supported by the Bridge, per Section 2.2.5, as follows:

Red card on blue, in my opinion correctly called, as the blue robot, while in the blue lane, clearly bumped the red robot several times, for no (apparent) reason other than accruing penalty points, which is a violation of G45.

Edit: Confirmed by head ref, red card to blue, red wins.

I saw that as an illegal pin at first, since blue didn't back up by at least 6 feet, but I guess the red card would overrule that.

A big THANK YOU to all the teams that participated! I have a blast announcing for this event, thanks to everyone for keeping the energy levels high.

A few answers to questions, totally just for your info:
1. Awards were not submitted on Saturday because the scoring system had already inputted awards that were not to be given out until Sunday.
2. The first triple bridge did not count because one of the robots was supported by a field rail. That alliance went on to repeat this feat with no problems.
3. We were ahead of schedule in eliminations which allowed us to give more cool down time.

A final shout out to our field crew for keeping everything running so smoothly, despite the normal Week 1 troubles, especially Jared and Cameron from 1266.

rsisk 05-03-2012 02:29

Re: 2012 San Diego

WOW, what a regional. The three triple balances during eliminations (1 reversed, but still awesome).

4161 T-Birds from Yucaipa as number 1 seed, amazing. Co-op bridge can get you to the top. Put the the power houses below 8th and really spread the power during the first round of alliance picking.

3476 Code Orange... amazing scoring machine. Than matched up with the balancing team of 3255 and 4161 was a lethal combination. It was a blast helping to get that alliance together.

3255 Super Nurds, definitely have a ton of respect for your playing ability after today.

Can't wait to see you all in St. Louis

399 enjoyed their experience at SD this weekend.

Despite several technical issues that plagued us on friday and saturday, we felt we played several strong matches.

Thanks to our alliance partners 1138 Eagle Engineering and 2339 Robolopes! This isn't the first time we've worked together(Various FLL tournaments with 2339 and 1138 and some practice sessions with 2339) and I hope this isn't the last! Thank you so much 1138 for picking us and 2339 for joining us to create an awesome alliance!
Fun fact: Chaminade(1138), Antelope Valley HS(2339), and Lancaster HS(399) are rival teams among our sports programs, but worked together wonderfully for FRC!

Thanks to the winning alliance of 4161, 3476, and 3255 for some close finals matches. Congrats to 4161 on being the first rookie #1 alliance captain in the SD regional's history.

Personally, it was great chatting with and helping out some friends on other teams.

Hope to see a few of you in STL!

San Diego was fun to watch, but it was too loud. It wasn't the loudest I've heard, and it wasn't immediately a problem, but after many hours, it's too loud. I arrived at 11:30 AM on Sunday and stayed for the remainder of the event. I was just about the highest/furthest group of people in the stands, and today my hearing is slightly muffled.

It's not necessarily the noise level at FRC events that is damaging, it's the noise level over many hours. If I can notice an effect over just the couple qualifier matches and the elimination matches I watched, I worry about people who sat through qualifiers all of the 2nd day. I'll be bringing ear plugs or something to Long Beach.

Edit: Confirmed by head ref, red card to blue, red wins.

It's very very important... Does someone has a video of this???
Thanks.

This has been a strange rule. In KC a team was warned not to continue this strategy after a match when they earned 18 penalty points. So, how many times can you hit them? Why do we have a rule that punishes a robot for performing an action in their protected area. Instead of a red card the referee should have the discretion of simply not counting the additional penalties if they deem it a strategy by rule. Now the referee has to judge the strategy with their only recourse a disqualification. Tough call with too harsh a consequence on the line IMO.

@Lidor51: Video of the situation occuring in KC is match 6 here: http://www.more.net/content/2012-qualification-matches Can't help you with the SanDiego footage.
