2012 Hawaii Regional

Just thought we should have a thread and I don't see one. I saw Kalani (3008) at San Diego this week, looking good. A few other teams are competing at the Oregon Regional next week, so we have some scouting opportunities if the event is webcast.

We will be sending an email to all teams registered for the Hawaii regional (for whom we can find an email address) to introduce our robot (ThunderChicken!), so we can all start thinking about alliance/balancing strategies, etc. If you would like to be sure that you're included, you can PM me with your contact person's email and I'll make sure you get on the list.

Re: 2012 Hawaii Regional

Aloha and thanks for making this thread! We had a good time in SD, though we ran into an unbelievable amount of problems with the chain on our drive.

Just a bit curious as to which teams can do the coopertition bridge and alliance bridge as those were the game changers for alliances with low scoring robots.

Also curious as to which teams can herd, the winning alliance had a team that was just a herder and was able to feed balls to their alliance.

GL to all in Hawaii! Can't wait to compete with you guys!

Re: 2012 Hawaii Regional

Great idea to start planning for alliance balancing. The three robot balance is a game changer just like the super fast minibots were last year. We didn't give as much thought to the balancing challenge as we should have, but we did build a wide bot and we do have a working tilter that we kept as part of our 30 lb allowance so that we could improve it. We tested our tilter on a fully weighted bridge so we should be able to tilt the competition bridge.

Our main balancing issue is that we went with standard AM mecanum wheels so we don't have much traction on the polycarb. We can climb and balance on our own, but it's a little dicey. We're hoping to have a partner with good traction that will slowly "push" us up the bridge for the two robot balance. For a triple balance we'd have to be the middle bot as we don't have the traction or weight distribution to hang a wheel off the end. Our robot weighs about 110 pounds without bumpers or battery.

Good job in SD Falcons! I felt your pain when you broke down at the end of the quarters. We had drive chain issues throughout the Breakaway game so we know how frustrating that is.

Good luck to the teams going to Oregon! We'll be rooting for you!

Just as an FYI that due to unforeseen circumstances, the pits will have to go back into being in the arena.

The team social will be in Gym 1 on Friday evening.

Thanks for the heads up, Osa. See you in a couple of weeks.

As for the coopertition bridge...what do you guys think about ThirteenOfTwo's idea posted here with pertinent strategy listed below?

The coopertition bridge is hard, and you need a lot of time to get on it... what is a robot that can't score going to do that's worth more than 2 QP?

In San Diego, that was the case for many of the qualifying matches. And often times the game changer and the reason why some teams ranked so high. If on a team there were three robots and only one of which could actually score they were more likely to lose if they had to scramble for the bridge in the last 30 seconds. I expect to see much of this for low scoring robots in Hawaii.

Could you explain your tilter mechanism more? Is it for tilting a bridge that has robot on it so you can get onto the bridge? Or, is more like 148's "foot" or as I like to call it, the "stinger" (since their robot is named Scorpion) that pushes the bridge up while robots are on it?

As for us, Team 2348 has a reasonable tilting mechanism to get onto the bridge and we have the ultrasonic to tell us the correct distance so we aren't pushing the robot onto our bumper (assuming bridge is not wobbling). We are using mecanum wheels also and can rotate on the bridge to be oriented either way. Our drivers have had some decent practice at our scrimmage, so balancing alone is very likely.

Re: 2012 Hawaii Regional

We guarantee 10 in auto with our dunker and use pneumatics to lift our robot which we drive over the bridge to drop it by releasing the pressure and bringing the full weight of the robot on it. We had no problem getting on the bridge with Hilo and Honokaa in our practice sessions in Hilo (two robot balance only). We also added a ball collector which seemed to be a no-brainer but i don't see many out there in the first two weeks. Its a spinning device with fingers that allows us to collect along our full 28 inches in front so we're not trying to get that ball into a narrow 11 inch opening which so many teams seem to be doing and not too well. Watch out for the Big Island teams....both honokaa and hilo seem to be able to pop at least 10 in auto and score well. Once hilo zones in, one shot, they pop three pointers time after time. We were able to feed their robot with our arm to reload them. We hope to do it at least once in a practice round to show it off.

I'm not sure what happened about the pit changes since I missed the meeting.
However, I am happy the pits will be in an air conditioned building.

We cant wait to show off our latest arsenal as well.;)

We'll be requesting that one of our alliance partners spend the entire match balancing the bridge every match. If we're the weakest scorer on our alliance or the only robot with a reliable drive train, it'll be us going up there, but I'd love to give our driver time to practice scoring in the actual competition. All of our alliances at the tournament will be coopertition-willing.

Squillo 09-03-2012 18:48

Re: 2012 Hawaii Regional

OK, lettin' the cat out of the bag here. We have a dumper too. We should be able to get 10 in autonomous pretty much every match (barring unforeseen circumstances, which always seem to occur at competition - perhaps our 'foresee-ers' need improvement...).

We have a wedge-type 'bridge depressor' that's pneumatically activated, the wedge allows the weight of the bot to push down the bridge.

Mecanum drive, can go on the bridge long ways, short ways, or drive up and then spin. We have a really nice 'creep' mode that makes (solo) balancing a snap. Still waiting to try 2-bot balancing, once we get bumpers on our 'drive mule' to serve as a second bot. And the software crew is working on an autobalancer using the gyro.

We certainly will cooperate (coopertiate?) when it is in the best interest of the alliance. Our scorer is reliable but doesn't hit the top hoop (only middle and lower), so if we have two strong high-scorers we can balance early. Or, since our bot is tallish (59.5") and heavy (close to 120 w/o battery/bumpers), and can score, it might be better for a smaller bot to go to the bridge. Whatever - our drive team will do their best to work with y'all. We can push or be pushed.

One thing, some of the bots I've seen on videos seem to have trouble getting traction on the bridge. Maybe it's our weight, but our mecanums don't have any problem with the bridge surface. We have lexan or polycarbonate or whatever it's supposed to be on our practice bridge, and we get pretty good traction (but when powered down, unfortunately, we will slide off a tipped bridge).

Our tilter will only push down an empty bridge. By "fully weighted" I meant that we added the required weight to the low cost plywood bridge to duplicate the force required to push down the competition bridge.

Congratulations to Maui and Baldwin who made it to the finals and semis respectively of the Oregon regional! Both of their alliances were defeated by an alliance that triple balanced in all of their elimination matches except one.

Both Maui and Baldwin appear to be capable bridge balancers. Saw them do numerous doubles. I think Maui was using the Kinect station in hybrid, but I'm not sure what they were trying to do as their robot didn't move much.

Thank you everyone, we look forward to competing with all of you guys at Hawaii regional.
Yes we can use the kinect or run regular code. The purpose of the kinect was to score 2 baskets, and then drive to the coopertition bridge to get the balls on it. Usually we just get a head start to tip the balls to our side since we run out of time.

I was wondering, what is the force needed to push down the "real" bridge (the one used in the real competition). Also, what is the weight of the "real" bridge?

Our team would love to see you in the pits so that we can have a chat. In our four years of existence we've never been out of the state, so it's always great when one of the more well-versed FRC mentors comes out so that we can talk to them.

Have fun in Hawaii and we'll hopefully see you at the regional!

Re: 2012 Hawaii Regional

A big mahalo to another successful regional event at our 5th annual Hawaii FRC tournament!

Despite lag issues that many teams experienced, it didnt defray from the exciting eliminations that happened today.

Thank you to team 2439 and rookie team 4218 for allowing us to be part of such a great working alliance. We truly had an alliance that relied on teamwork: 1 Shooter, 1 Feeder/Defender, and 1 Balancer. We were not heavily convinced it would work at the beginning, however, trusting each of our strengths, we did quite well.

This had to be one of the best finals for me personally as we didnt have the usual 359-368 alliance, and I cannot recall ever playing against them in our 13 year history (doing soooo many regionals with them).

One of the best joys I got to see was 4218 getting selected last, and their pure joy, tears, and gracefulness in experiencing a regional championship. Not only were they awesome at helping us win, it left a permanent positive experience where I know they will be successful for years to come.
Our other teammate was 2439, and for years they always got so close in both VEX and FRC. To finally see them get above that hurdle and get to experience championships, is even more gratifying than winning ourselves.

Congrats to Team 3008 on another RCA and to Team 3880 on their EI award!

And last but not least, great job to teams 368 and 1056. They both had outstanding robots, evident by their qualification records. 1056 is the best fender bot/dunker I have seen this year, hands down, while 368 will be a force at the Fresno regional during week 6.

Get your popcorn ready!

Too bad we can't show it and our lifting robot bridge dropper at worlds but thats how FIRST goes I guess. It was definitely the most interesting alliance selection I've seen in 10 years! Congrats to you and Baldwin and.....sorry, forgot your third partner....I'm really happy for Baldwin!!! First trip to worlds....very very deserved!! You've had so many finalist over the last rwo years. Best of luck to you both at Worlds!!

Re: 2012 Hawaii Regional

Congratulations to all on a highly exciting Hawaii Regional. Thanks go out to our partners Punahou 2090 and WHEA 3881.

Baldwin 2439 - congratulations on going all the way. Great job, Jun. You deserve the trip to St. Louis in this, your senior year.

Waialua 359 - we did it without you in 2009 and now you've done it without us in 2012. Can't say we didn't give it our best shot. Yoshi's gonna be a monster when he's a senior in 3 years with 2 for 2 under his belt already.

Island Pacific 4218 - you are just a gem to behold and a rookie inspiration, indeed! We all knew before the matches began that you would be going to the Championship one way or another. No matter how successful you are in the future, you will never have another year quite like this one so enjoy it to its fullest!

Despite the highly competitive elimination matches, I must say Match 61 will be one of the most memorable with Punahou 2090 (our eventual first pick), Kapolei 2445, and ourselves all scoring 12 points in hybrid, having Punahou up on the Coopertition Bridge with Baldwin, and then our last second shot from the key.

We will try to get match video up onto YouTube as soon as we can, but we failed to capture about 1/3 of the Friday matches. Not sure if we'll be able to get it up before we depart next weekend for the Central Valley Regional.

Again, congratulations to all and thanks also to teams that helped with volunteers for the event. Without them, this all would not be possible.

On behalf of the entire Hawaii robotics community, I would like to thank Alan and Carol (sp?) Anderson (Team 45 the TechnoKats) for volunteering at our event. I was correct in believing that I couldn't handle being the lead Control System Advisor at my team's first competition. I was greatly relieved when Alan volunteered to take the lead leaving me to be the back-up. Carol did a great job on the green shirt safety team.

All day Thursday and Friday morning, Alan didn't have much down time. He was always moving from one team to another keeping things moving and solving problems much more quickly than I could have. A number of times I encountered problems that I knew that I couldn't handle quickly. I called Alan for help. It is humbling to find out that things that you "know" are dead wrong. Without Alan's help, there are a number of teams that couldn't have competed or would have competed with "crippled" bots.

Again Thank You both, enjoy the remainder of your time in Hawaii, and I look forward to seeing you at IRI,
Randy Wood

Baldwin 2439 - Thank you for selecting us for selecting us. You build a strong alliance.

Island Pacific 4218 - Thank you for playing your role to perfection. It has been a pleasure working with you all school year. For those that don't know, IPA started both VEX and FRC teams this year. That is a daunting task. And thanks for the 775 motor. It launched every one of our shots.

Kalani 3008: Congratulations on back-to-back Chairman's Awards. In just your 4th year in FRC, you are setting a high bar for other teams.

I would like to especially thank 1056 Waiakea High School the "Hot Rocks" for choosing us as there first pick during alliance selection. Your autonomous, robot , and bridge tipper was amazing. 2443 was quite surprised you guys chose us as your partner. Sorry for the hesitation during alliance selection; I was taking the news as a surprise, and I was stressing/trying to figure who I was gonna choose as a partner if no one asked us. We were seeded 9th, but moved up as the 8th seed once Baldwin chose Waialua.
Also I would like to thank team 3882 Lahainaluna High School for being a good alliance partner. As an alliance we made it all the way to the semifinals falling just short from moving on to the finals. It was so intense pushing it to a rubber match.

Congratulations to the winning alliance of Baldwin, Waialua, and Island Pacific Academy.

Good job Jun and Baldwin Robotics. You guys will represent Maui well at St. Louis. Congrats for being the second Maui team to earn the right to go to Worlds. Enjoy yourself at Vex and FRC worlds!!! :]

Wow! What a great regional! OK, we didn't have any triple balances, but there sure were some awesome scoring robots...359, 368, 1056 and 3008. Semifinal 2 and the finals were the most exciting series of matches that I can recall.

Baldwin showed how to win as a great passer, defender and bridge balancer.

Great job by our Kapolei neighbor IPA too.

Congratulations and good luck to all of you in St. Louis!

You were a good pick 2443, plus we were suffering from "Maui withdrawals" when Baldwin chose Waialua and we weren't their partner for the first time in three years. I wish I had listened/heard your drivers suggestion about sending Lahainaluna (another partner from last years alliance) over the bridge in the first match, you guys played great "D" in that second and third match. I'm sure we make it to finals if I had listened to you, that darn ball isn't under the bridge or McKinley doesn't shoot lights out in that third match (I still want an explanation for that from Alan) but we'd need miracles to knock off Baldwin/Waialua! That is going to bug me for years now! I don't know what it is but Waiakea loves the Maui teams. Probably because you guys are always very good and right there with us. For your seniors its best of luck and to your underclassmen we'll see you next year at VEX and other tournaments. You're going to love Worlds Baldwin. Don't forget to visit all the vendors ASAP to get shirts, frisbees, LED toys and more before they run out. Rotate your media pass so everyone gets a chance to walk the robot into the dome, its an unreal feeling. Shoots, now I'm wishing we were going with you guys! Tell your teachers to lotus notes me if they have any questions. Get your microbot teams going so we can go to Japan together! We're doing another bipedal workshop this summer on the Big Island, hopefully some of you can come to it. We're working on an 8 servo model that can be "walked" by a smart phone. We're getting closer to the Hominid bipedal i want to build and do tournaments with. Can you imagine soccer or sumo with bipedals at the high school level? Hopefully before I retire I can see it happen.

Is this Mr. Olive or Mr. Murphy? Baldwin loves waiakea as well! promise :D It was amazing to see 2 maui teams in your alliance! way to represent outer-island teams you guys had a great run. Maui High is going to be a beast next year as well as lahainaluna. They have sooo many committed students still young and already hooked to robotics. Makes me sad that im graduating:( hopefully I can stick around. Thanks Waiakea for 2 great years of being alliance partners !

Re: 2012 Hawaii Regional

Aloha Jun, its Olive! Murphy took a year off to concentrate on our cyberpatriot team. We may all take a year off next year. Me and my mentors need a break! We go year round with VEX, microbots, botball(which we're skipping this year), underwater ROV and all the workshops we teach around the State, Mainland and in Japan. I know we'll suffer withdrawals but its also nice getting home before dark in January and February. Its a good time for us to rest, no titles or Chairmans to defend and coming off a great tournament (world ranking of 20th in the latest OPR rankings). We've been taking these every couple of years since starting FIRST in 2002-3, most times for a lack of money but it's still a break. If we do come back I'm only looking at Mainland regionals. I really want to do Silicon Valley again and it conflicts with Hawaii. So many good teams there and I think we'll have a fairer shot at Chairman's having won engineering inspiration our last time there while getting ignored in Hawaii the last three years. Ok, we did get EI last year, the only year of the last three I didn't submit for CA. Its pretty amazing to get EI among all those established Veteran teams in Silicon Valley but not even rate in Hawaii?

Hey Mr.Olive! You guys totally deserve an RCA award in Hawaii for all that you do. Not saying Kalani isn't deserving of it because the definitely are but it seems that the outer-island teams have a bigger challenge because of being outer-island for awards such as WFA and RCA. I dont see any problem with not attending a home event but taking a break from FIRST would be sad to see. I believe Baldwin will be giving VEX to another adviser and FIRST will be only in Hawaii next year. This year has taken a toll on Mr. Suter and his wife. They work countless amount of hours finding money and donating ALL their time with no breaks from VEX straight into FRC. Whatever you do I hope to see you guys soon

Lavapicker 27-03-2012 07:31

Re: 2012 Hawaii Regional

Thanks again Jun. Kalani does do good work and Mr. Silver has taken our brushbots, summer robotics camp and bipedals and added his own flare to them. I totally agree with you on the Outer Island thing though. Oahu just doesn't get it. I know I didn't when I lived there over 20 years ago now. From what you said I know you feel it too. I've had some very what I consider condescending things said to me over the years. They definitely don't understand how much harder it is for us to have to get airfare, rental cars, hotels, meals etc when we come there. Not to mention the fact we have to fly over with everything we need for presentations. Not like I can go to my room/shop and pick something up. As mentors we also have that added liability since I don't send the students home at night.
Mr. Suter and I are in the same shoes. Every team in the regional has a main nut like us...Glenn at Waialua, Osa Hank and Alan at Mckinley, Bobby at Moanalua and on and on. I think thats why we all get along so well, because we know how hard each other is working. Lucky for me I've always had at least one of my five kids on the team so I could justify the time I was spending. I really admire those who don't. I can't believe you guys pulled off Oregon with the bag and tag mess this year. I'll find out later how you did it. We're not going to VEX worlds this year although we qualified a team. No mo money! It was a down year for us anyway because we lost two months while they were doing school renovations. Next year.

Thank you Mckinley 368 for picking us to be alliance partners this year. It was a really blast to the the math with you guys. Not to mention WHEA 3881 for also being a contributing factor to our alliances success.

Congratulations to all the teams this year, it was an awesome regional. Being apart of this regional for 4 years, I truly believe Hawaii is one of the premier examples of the ideals of FIRST; Coopertition and Gracious Professionalism. This being my last regional I'll participate in, in hawaii I'm looking forward to see how all the teams as well as the regional grows throughout the years.

A special thanks to all the volunteers, without you guys this wouldn't be possible.

No mo money! * * * Next year.

Yeah, it's tough getting it all together from over here too. We've had a really hard time this past year raising the funds we need... everyone is cutting back, our sponsors are cutting their workforces and just scraping to keep things together. In a way it was a relief (OK, bittersweet) that we didn't get a ticket to St. Louis. Sure, we would have loved it, but I don't know HOW we could have raised the bucks to get even a skeleton team there, at $1000 pp. just for the RT airfare. And when it costs so much, in TIME and energy as well as money, just to get to our closest regional, we always feel like we're running a few steps behind. We cut our budget by SO much this year and still had trouble getting it together. I wish I knew of some sources of grant money that would pay for travel costs, but those are pretty hard to find. And you can only keep hitting the same small community so many times before the money runs out. However, living on Kauai has other advantages, I gotta admit.

And we have a great, young team this year, and lots of ideas and inspiration for next year. And our first ever win of an elimination match! That was really inspiring. Thank you to our alliance partners 2459 and 1378 - even if our team was picked by accident, I think we all did pretty well!

Just curious - a question for the alliance captains, including those who ended up picked by other captains (359, 2443 come to mind) - were we (2465) on any of your picklists as a 3rd team, if we hadn't been picked first round?

Squillo 28-03-2012 03:34

Re: 2012 Hawaii Regional

Oh, and Hot Rocks 1056, you truly have a "Robot of Awesomeness" this year. You absolutely deserved the awards you won, hands down. Just seeing your robot has inspired our students (and mentors) in SO many ways. It was worth everything we did to get to the regional just for that. The team can't stop talking about "the quintessential dumper." We would have LOVED to see you on Einstein.

I have to say it seemed like everyone was truly inspired at this years regional.

Personally i was moved by the growth of ALL of the teams in hawaii, not just a few, but all of them.

I'm sure we've all learned a lot and have a bunch of things to take into consideration in preparation for the upcoming VEX season, and later the FRC season.

I look forward to working with all of you in the coming months and years.

Yes you guys were actually pretty high on our list because of the fact that you guys had a solid auto and could get the job well done. 3rd picks were very hard for us but we made a great choice with ipa

Squillo 28-03-2012 04:10

Re: 2012 Hawaii Regional

Awww, shucks, you're too kind. Seriously, our team will be thrilled to hear that you even considered us! (And I had to tell my son, who programmed the autonomous... made his night.)

We were really happy to see IPA go the distance - their pit was next to ours and they were totally wonderful folks. I hope they can travel to champs - I know when we went in 2010 it was such a fantastic experience, to really see the "wide world" of FRC.

Re: 2012 Hawaii Regional

Hey everyone, Logan here! Just finally getting around to posting this now that I've finally pulled myself together after the post-FRC energy crash. Thank goodness for Prince Kuhio Day; I don't know what I would've had to go through to get myself through school on Monday after playing Rebound Rumble all weekend. Fun game, but the insane amounts of negotiation necessitated by the seeding rules had me running around the pit constantly. Thanks, everyone, for putting up with my constant check-ins! A particular thank you (and apology) go to the guys from Damien, who had to deal with tired-and-frustrated me on Saturday morning. I'm sorry for our misunderstanding and glad we were able to patch it over afterwards.

I'm happy to say that this was absolutely our best season ever by pretty much any metric you choose. We got the game strategy closer to correct than ever before, we had a complete scoring robot, we had an autonomous, we had more student involvement in design and fabrication than ever before, we captained an alliance, we had full CAD, and we won a really nifty award... all after the year in which we lost our driver and our administrative captain! All in all I was really happy with our performance.

I'd like to call attention to team 2090 for all of the help they provided us with pre-and-mid-tournament: loaning us a solenoid breakout for our practice robot, donating a motor for arm upgrades, and helping us out with scouting and strategy were all hugely appreciated. 2090, you guys inspire us every year, and anything we can do to help you out we will.

Of course, I would be remiss to not mention our awesome alliance partners 3008 and 2455. We were a great team, guys, and those elimination rounds were bundles of fun! Special congratulations to 3008 for winning the RCA.

Good job to all of the teams who are moving on from Hawaii to St. Louis. Have fun there--we'll be cheering for you from back home!

As for the future... unlike last year, when half the team graduated, we only have two seniors leaving this year: Michael, our Programming Captain, and Erin, our physicist and VEX Admin Captain. They will be sorely missed. However, we'll be looking forward to competing next year and hoping we can continue our five-year trend of improvement! Next year is the last year for myself, FRC Admin Captain and tournament coordinator Spencer, head scout Blake, and engineer extraordinaire Kyle, so we'll be looking to make a big splash next year--we're hoping to preregister for our first ever World Festival and maybe attend our first ever out-of-state regional.

We're going to be quite busy with offseason work this coming year. Unlike in previous seasons, when we've never really found the time to work in the offseason, we plan on working our tails off this year to be even better and more prepared for next season. If you're interested in working with us on some offseason build projects, shoot me a PM or an email at our team address frcteam2438@gmail.com.

Thanks for a great tournament and we'll see you at the next one!

Ether,
we are not sure as well why its not posted.
We would want it posted since last I checked on Saturday, we had the most TP points (over 200 iirc) and 2nd in HP behind only 1056. 1056 was 2nd in TP also.

Not sure if the timestamps have anything to do with it. I know the scorekeepers changed the time from Eastern time to Hawaiian time on the scoring computer after it was noticed all the matches were getting scrambled. Somehow I doubt the information will ever make its way onto the team standings page. I notice the elim data ends at 3:48pm and the match results data are at 3:48pm for Match 2.
