Did you use just the qualification data from this past weekend's events, or did you include elims and/or other event data ?

Also, where did you get your Gull Lake data ?

Does the formula implicitly take foul points into account? Is there any way (or reason) to extract penalties from scores for the OPR calcs? Points from fouls are displayed on the scoreboard at the end of each match, but I haven't seen that data recorded anywhere.

The proper way to determine fouls would be to use both pre-foul and post-foul DPR (Defensive Power Rating) metrics. Find both DPR numbers, then subtract the pre-foul from the post-foul number to determine a foul rating. I think this will find the few teams who commit 1+ fouls per match (with a rating of 1.0 or more), while most teams will have a rating between 0 and 0.33 (once every 3 matches someone on their alliance committed a foul). Anyone with a rating of 3.0 or more probably didn't read the rule book...

Of course, there will always be outliers -- such as the random robot that gets teamed with the box on wheels that bangs on the opponent's colored bridge during a balance.

If I understand correctly, the average team nets barely 5 points per game after penalties. Also, almost one in six teams does more harm than good (negative OPR).

Makes you want to really be careful, and be sure that your drive team knows how to not make a penalty.

Based on their robot design (gatherer pointing backwards) and big OPR lead, I'm guessing that 341 reloaded and scored extra points in Hybrid?

All,

I am concerned that the OPR data this year is grossly misleading if there is not some consideration for the Coopertition points. What I noticed from Kettering (and some other regional events from the web casts) is that the top teams are prioritizing on the Coop bridge over the regular bridge.

We need to figure out a way to incorporate Coop points if we want OPR to be meaningful. Right now I am not going to use OPR for much decision making in its current form.

Valid point. We certainly focused on the co-op bridge, making it balance with another team 5 out of the 9 matches we played. Sometimes that required sending the teams at 60 seconds to ensure those precious qualification points. It looks like 2337 hit it 7 times in 12 matches. GKC, Kettering, and San Diego all appeared to have much higher co-op scores than the other regionals or district events in week 1.

Using this bat file and oprnet v19...
I got the numbers below. It would be useful if people could do some mild validation. For example: Were 2751, 967, and 1986 all very bridge-happy? Did 3597 sink pretty much every single one of their shots in the high basket in hybrid mode, or score more than 2 balls per hybrid mode, or aid their allies in scoring lots of balls in hybrid mode?

Assuming the numbers are correct, they actually give a pretty multidimensional view on a team: 16 is king of the teleop charts, but is only above-average for hybrid performance and is quite far down for bridge performance. It would be pretty cool to make scatter plots of the winning alliances (bridge power on x axis, teleop on another for example) and see if patterns emerge.

Seems to me that 2337 should be at the top of the bridge list, and certainly better than our team. I thought we hit the bridge a lot, but every time I turned around, they were on it and the place was cheering. :)

EDIT: I think I misunderstood your description - does bridge mean the coopertition bridge?

EDIT2: Yup, I misunderstood. Bridge means the alliance bridge. This now makes sense.... a couple of good case studies would be 33 and 3568. 33 went to the alliance bridge a lot, and are ranked very high there. 3568 (who had a great W-L record), only went to the bridge - they had no hybrid or teleop scoring.

Team 2468 was at Alamo. We finished at number 5 in qualifications due to our alliance pairings throughout Friday and Saturday.

We only could shoot two balls per match. We were 19 for 24 in our twelve matches on the middle height goal (2 pointer) during Teleoperated. Our human player scored a 3 pointer and 2 pointer as time ran down.

We did balance once during eliminations and multiple times during qualifications.
We also made it a point to tip the Coopertition Bridge as often as possible toward our end for our shooters.

We did not average 9 points per match but does tipping and/or balancing count toward that score?

I scored the bridge as: the BP a team earned on the FRC results, plus their coopertition points times 5 - basically, assuming that a balanced coopertition bridge implied they could have otherwise balanced the alliance bridge and added 10 points to their BP. Since I look at OPRNet as a scouting tool, it's important to know who has mad bridge skills whether coopertition bridge or alliance bridge.

I don't think this is exactly what you are thinking of, but the radar plots sure do look cool. :D

Note that there are 2 charts on the "All Teams" sheet and 3 on the "Alliances as Whole" Sheet

Obviously, teleoperated baskets account for most of the points, though it is interesting how the Hybrid OPR is higher than the Bridge OPR for all teams and when you take just the winning alliance members. (1.765 vs. 1.506 & 3.968 vs. 3.896)

It doesn't look like the overall OPR takes the coopertition bridge adjustment factor into account. The "Bridge" OPR column does, but the overall OPR shown is not the sum of the components.

Fixed in v20. The alliance scores used to build the OPR stat now get the CP bridge adjustment applied as well.

2751 had a simple strtegy that mainly focussed on balancing the bridges, so I feel good about being ranked high in that category, and realize we lack in the others. Still working on those.

I think the Hybrid and Bridge OPR data will be pretty good indicators of a teams ability to perform those tasks.

But teams that just hit their Hybrid shots, pop in a few buckets, assist their partners in balancing, then go to the Coop bridge will not rank very high in Telop OPR.

This game completely changes when you get to Eliminations. You NEED to be able to score quickly and accurately in Teleop before you go to balance. But, that has not really been the case in Qualifications (at least in Week 1).

Teams that focus on Teleop scoring in qualifications will rank high in Teleop OPR, but that may not be the focus of the best teams.

It will be interesting to see how this data pans out as the game evolves. I would assume as teams get more competitive you will need to score more Teleop baskets to win matches.

I tend to agree. I think that Hybrid OPR stands on its own as a pretty objective measure. But you probably need to look at Teleop OPR + Balance OPR (adjusted for Coopertition Balancing) together to get a good indicator of a robot's post-hybrid performance.

967 was fairly bridge happy, plus we usually had somebody good on the opposing alliance who could reliably get onto the coopertition bridge with us.

Adam makes a very interesting point. There were several matches at Kettering where we knew that having a two robot balance would guarantee a win, but neither partner could manipulate the bridge, and we always went for the coop bridge. We spent the vast majority of those matches helping partners on the alliance bridge, then balancing on the coop bridge. I don't even know if we shot a ball in teleop in those matches (maybe one or two).

This will change in the later competitions. First, just getting a two bot balance won't be good enough. Also, a lot of teams will work on getting a working bridge manipulator. OPR will probably be more representative in later competitions, but it probably is too bad now (with the coop points thrown in).

Using the OPR executable it is possible to query the individual regionals, but I've been unable to figure out how to get it to output everything from all the regionals this year.

In previous years, If I wanted to compare cross-regional, I did it by querying each regional and writing down the data myself.

How do you calculate the week one OPR rankings across all the regionals? Do you look at the individual regionals and splice them together yourself to make the final post? Is it possible to enter a separate code, rather than an individual regional code to compare teams from all events?
