Divisions

I looked all over and could not find any answers, so here goes
when do you know what field you are assigned to for Championships?

It's our rookie year, so we have no experience with this

Re: Divisions

FIRST will release the divisions closer to Championships, usually a week or so before, if I'm not mistaken.

And welcome to FIRST!

Re: Divisions

If I recall correctly, Divisions begin getting revealed a week or two prior to championships. I believe it's because FIRST needs to wait for everyone to qualify before they can start accurately assigning divisions.

Congrats at FLR, by the way! SparX looks forward to seeing you guys at champs!

Thanks for the help guys

We look forward to seeing the both of you! FLR has quite a strong representation this year (So far, I think it's 3951, 1126, 3173, 639, 340, 1507, and 191 all going)

Grim Tuesday and Suitster,

I can't seem to find contact information for your teams on your websites. Could you send me a private message with an email address for your team's leadership, or reply to this post?

I would greatly appreciate it!

Do they really assign divisions, or is it as random as match schedules? What is that based on?

It's not quite random; teams are divided roughly in numerical order.

Several years ago it was strictly numerical, in a serpentine fashion.

For the last couple years, no one could figure out the pattern they used.

I tried to find a pattern in 09, I think it is random with no constants other than roughly equal numbers in each division. Below is an excerpt from my spreadsheet analyzing the number of times the same division occurred in a row (348 teams in numerical order) vs expected value if it was 348 rolls of a 4 sided die. It is incredibly close so am going with dice roll style random. Excerpt below:

Code:

Same division in a row        2                3                4                5                6
Actual                348        85                21                8                2                1
Expected        348        86.24783862        21.18805284        5.158830257        1.244717765        0.297571011

We used to make prediction threads that were pretty dead on who was going to end up where and then FIRST threw everyone for a loop and switched it up on us.

Predicting which division teams will be in has about the same chance as predicting the game before kickoff.

The only thing I know is 359 has always been in the toughest division, never with 368 (who qualifies frequently as well), and NEVER on Curie.

That's because you are a tough team and we like you! Colorful shirts have to stick together.

You've just jinxed yourself. The Curie Curse will take you as it's victim this year...
