2012 Lonestar Regional

Starting a thread for LSR.

Who's going?

What do you expect? From your team? From other teams?

Please let us know!

We're going!

DiscoBots will be there.

Re: 2012 Lonestar Regional

Panthrobotics, Team 3337, is going to be there. . . with a much repaired bridge mechanism, a great defensive strategy, and ready to rumble.

Re: 2012 Lonestar Regional

Spectrum 3847 will be there, it's going to be a really tough regional.

The normally strong Texas teams are coming plus the addition of 2415 and 359. It's going to be some of the best elimination matches of the year.

Can't wait to see everyone there.

Re: 2012 Lonestar Regional

57 is obviously coming. With a better latching system on our wedge so it both saves our transmission and is still retractable. Also with some solution to the dancing robot phenomenon caused by our pneumatic wheels and somewhat high CG.

Also, a little biRDie told me it's pretty likely 364, Team Fusion, will be a late add to the roster. If we can get their comms running, and I'll stop at nothing to succeed at that, then they'll just add to the ranks of strong robots in attendance. I'm fully expecting Elims to be an epic showdown where no-one is safe.

MysterE 19-03-2012 19:52

Re: 2012 Lonestar Regional

I am hoping for Fusion as well.

Re: 2012 Lonestar Regional

624 will be back again (no surprise). Looking to fine tune our shooter calibration for LSR...a little inconsistent at Bayou.

And agreed--looks like some FANTASTIC competition; waiting to see another alliance perform the challenging triple balance.

Re: 2012 Lonestar Regional

Lot of non-texas teams at LSR this year. This is starting to feel like the Lone Star Regional back before all those other Texas regionals came online.

I'll save everyone some time and just list the Texas visitors here :

359 from Hawaii
896 from New Jersey
1818, 3337 from Louisiana
1875 from Florida
2415 from Georgia
2773 from Oklahoma
3526, 4400 from Mexico
4278 , SPAIN (that's a 10 hour flight ! )

Instead of putting a listing of team numbers on the thread, here is a link to blue alliance !

Let's start picking favorites for the elims!

locks: 118 , 359, 1477, 624
dark horses: 3847, 3320, 231, 57
sleepers : 364 , 1801, 441, 3997

Thank you for the consideration as a dark horse, we will see how Dallas-West goes next week.

1477 is the only double regional winner so far this year (as far as I can tell, not counting district events).

I would move 231 into the lock category, they were captains of the Alamo winning alliance after all.

You left out 2415 as a lock, winners at Peachtree this past weekend.

2936 Gatorzillas should also be on that list. Last time I checked 148 wasn't triple balancing by themselves at Alamo, 2936 should get some of that credit. I've gone back and watched the video so many times and I still can't believe they stayed on the bridge with only two wheels.

You're just being humble not including yourself on that list. 2587 has only once not made it into the semifinals at Lone Star.

I agree with you about 3997, I haven't haven't been this excited to see a rookie robot in a while. Rumor has it they constructed their two robots (one for practice) in a crazy fast time frame, under 3 weeks of meeting only 3 times a week. Building robots in garages seems to be in this year (see 3999 , Highest Rookie Seed and Rookie All-Star at Alamo). 3997 is my pick for Rookie Highest Seed.

After getting knocked out a little earlier last year than they are used too 3103 is going to be looking to make a push back into the finals. With some solid driver practice from Alamo they might just pull it off.

3320 were Regional Finalist last year. I am expecting a very nice showing from this Austin team.

364 is only a sleeper if they don't get on the roster or they aren't able to sort out their communication issues. From the few balls I saw them get off at Bayou they are going to be a lock for eliminations if they are running. (They were the 8th Alliance Captain at Bayou with out running)

I really want to see someone on 57's platform, I was waiting all of Bayou and it never got to play out. The competition is going to be so good at Lone Star, the triple balance could make the difference.

How many other teams have new triple balance strategies up their sleeves? (I can only assume 118 hasn't been sitting on their hands for the past 3 weeks)

Look like a very competitive event in the making.
Our only hope is to continue making the eliminations rounds and to get good practice/experience doing our 1st event this weekend in Hawaii.
We are 20/20 in making eliminations at regionals since our inception, and hope to make it 22/22 after this season.:)

Unfortunately, they didn't raise enough funds this year to register. They will try again next year.

It is an honor to have the newest member of the HoF come and compete at Lone Star. I predict that we will be seeing you guys in the finals.

1429 will be there again. I believe that there will be a lot of close and hard fought matches, especially in the elims. Should be a lot of fun!.

Paul,
we are just looking forward to having a great time, even if its our skeleton crew. We have just a few juniors attending and no seniors, with the rest being 8-10th grade.
We also have a couple of students who are going to experience flying on a plane for the very first time.:ahh:

Personally, I want to see 118's robot up close and see the awesome piece of work they have this year, again.

We thank all of you to think of us as a sleeper. It's true we build two robots in three weeks time. We did it all in solid works before we builded anything. This is as tough as i seen Lone Star in a very long time. I'm so happy for our rookie team and our robot name "Sheldon" to come and see what we can bring to the table. It's going to be great!!!!

With 5 teams having already won a regional (1477 (2), 231, 624, 359, and 2415) and a lot of deserving teams still looking to lock up a place at Championship. This week is going to be awesome. There shouldn't be too much trouble putting together 8 very solid alliances for eliminations.

Let's put some more details to some other important statistics:

#1 Alliance Teams : 118 (twice) , 1477, 624, 359
Finalists: 1429 , 2936
Semi-finalists: 118 , 832, 57

And a handful of quarter-finalists at different events.

So excited that it is finally time for the Lone Star Regional!

I'll be traveling with the team on Wednesday and will be at the Regional on Thursday to facilitate a NEMO meeting at 1:30 p.m. Be sure and spread the word to your team's mentors. We'll have the room information available that morning.

Here's the NEMO website. It's chalk full of helpful information.

Wishing everyone safe travels and a fantastic competition,

Jane

I hope we get enough rest.
Our flight just got delayed 3 hours, we have a layover of 8 hours in LAX, then have to go to Dallas, then arrive in Houston 19 hours after arriving at the airport.

I hate AA. :(

I wonder if our whole group will even make it?
Now Dallas gets hit by tornadoes and half our group makes landing at some other unknown place.
It's too bad we got robot parts on that flight!

Ouch, I know how it can be... FedEx-ing a Triathlon bike to Kona and trying to get it in a reasonable amount of time, all while getting used to a huge time and climate change. It's rough. I really hope your team is able to get here in time and compete to its fullest!

Edit: I guess I should probably add that I was not the one participating in this particular Hawaiian race ;), simply managing, coaching, and cheering. Not that I don't ever want to do it myself or anything.

There are four of us spending the night in the AA Admirals Club at DFW. Two adults and two students. We were having a very very rough approach when the pilot announce that she was diverting to Love field because she could see tornadoes over DFW. They had us on a flight out tomorrow morning to Killian (sp?) then to Houston. Just got a call that the first flight is canceled. As of now they say that they MAY be able to to get 2 of us to Houston tomorrow. I was going to drive, but the lady at the Admirals Club desk said that there are no cars.
PS,
I am the CSA that Glenn volunteered.

You have luggage for 4 plus the robot parts?
We have enough teams traveling to Houston that we should be able to figure something out, if nothing else but get you guys far enough down the road to be able to get you guys a rental car.

Have you got the RD's e-mail? Send her an e-mail... maybe she could contact the Dallas RD and figure something out to help.

Are you guys still stuck at Love? AA really says they can't get you any flights to Houston? I say complain to the high heavens, and if they can't come through, tell them you want your luggage so you can book a flight on Southwest to complete your trip. Southwest has flights from Love to Houston Hobby with seats available, starting at 6:15am. Yes, they're $183 tickets, which is a bit painful, but if AA wants to strand you and make you miss the regional, I say go with with a one-way Southwest ticket just to get you here.

Then write a letter to AA explaining how you had to book a flight on Southwest to get you to your destination on-time because AA wouldn't.

If you guys are still stuck, let me know, I have a van and no place to be till around 4pm tomorrow for field setup (I'm taking my students over after school). Dallas and back seems like a fun all night adventure to me.

This really shouldn't be problem and I am serious in my offer to drive up and get you, it wouldn't be the first time I did a trip that long booth ways in a day. And it would be cheaper than 4 southwest tickets.

Thanks everyone for the help.
Randy, call me anytime if you have any updates.

Our hotel is near the airport and we can pick up whoever makes it.

The worst part of it all is none of us were supposed to go thru Dallas and we were oh so close to diverting ALL of us thru there!

Another option is look into Greyhound....I think I only paid $35 to get up to Dallas when I couldn't find a ride last week for Dallas East and most of the time there are plenty of seats....

Hi Glenn,
My phone's dead and the charger is in my checked bag - not good planning.

First, thanks for all the offers of rides! After further consideration, I don't dare differ from our parent approved travel plans that much. Private car travel requires additional documents.

AA has this very frustrating policy. If you don't use one part of a ticket, they will cancel the remaining reservation. If you try to rebook it, they try to turn it into a one-way fare. I know, I got caught once without notice. I asked the Admirals Club people and they confirmed that if we drove or flew SWA, we'd lose our flight home. I called the Gold desk (Glenn makes me fly so much) and they said that they would wave that policy in this case. After listening to my sad, sad tale, she spent half an hour getting us all on a 4:20 flight out of DFW to Houston Hobby airport. Not where we want to be, but closer. We can standby on the earlier flights to Bush airport and hope, but are on the flight that arrives in Houston Hobby at 5:30 worst case. Although our bags are going to Bush first thing in the morning.

Again, thanks for all the ride offers and I look forward to seeing all the teams on Thursday.

3:30AM
The Admirals Club lady kept working the system and got us 4 seats on the flight arriving at Houston Bush airport at 1:30PM.
We'll still check standby on the earlier flights

Re: 2012 Lonestar Regional

Thanks for mentioning us AllenGregoryIV! We're pretty excited about this regional. This is the second regional for (I believe 24 teams) and most were in the elimination rounds at their previous competition(s). 5 regional winners by my count - and that doesn't count 118 who is likely just some bad luck away from winning at least 1 of their 2 previous regionals, if not both. It's going to be a tough crowd for sure!

After some adjustments to our shooter on Thurs, I think we should have a very competitive robot! As long as we don't have to spend 8 hours Friday trying to get the laptop to recognize the robot to reprogram it again...

So you all in the pits!

It's looking like they are squared away and Glenn will be meeting them at the airport in Houston.

Once there, I know there are teams watching this thread and can help them (or any other team traveling to Houston) with any questions or needs, if they have them.

Thanks, Adrienne and 148. Hope everyone survived the storms and twisters all right.

Connecticut's was #omgctr. I don't think #omglsr could mean anything else, right? Plus it leaves 4 more letters for content. Of course, it doesn't do much for promotion when no one can figure out what the heck you're talking about.

Typically all the webcasts can be found on Madstream or Watch FIRST Now. I personally prefer Madstream, since the preset layouts are nice and the chat is active.

I am informed by our esteemed regional director that there will, in fact, be a Lone Star webcast. The link will be on the NASA webcast clearinghouse come tomorrow morning, before opening ceremonies. I'll try to update here with a direct link, but updating from my phone is questionably likely.

The competition looked great today.

359, 118 , 1477, 624 still look like the teams to beat,
I expect those pairings to happen quickly,

The next level of teams should be interesting, there are definitely enough robots to keep the scoring at a decent level, but will it be enough to beat the big players ?

Anybody want to post their scouting stats ? :D

I don't see any triple balances or unique feeding strategies emerging, should be a fun day tomorrow at Lone Star !

Great Job WiredCats & Oscar

Great job 2415 (SF) & 832 (QF) for representing Georgia extremely well at the Lonestar Regional. You both competed in the Saturday afternoon playoff brackets and 832 was part of a 3 bot blue alliance balance in one QF match.

In SF2, the WiredCats scored 36 points in hybrid after the other two alliance members gave them all 6 balls. I "think" 2415 scored all 67 hoop points however, their alliance still lost the SF to the eventual competition winning alliance of 359, 1642, 118 by a score of 106-90.

The WiredCats won the Engineering Inspiration Award so congratulations again.

It was so much fun watching you online. We're proud of both of our representatives to Texas.

Actually, 2415 scored all 70 of the Blue alliance's basket points in what was a performance people would expect from teams like 67 and 2056. 2415 has a bright future at Championships if they continue to play like that!

Congratulations to 118, 359, and 1642! Especially to 118 for winning their first regional in 3 tries this year, despite having a dominant robot in all 3 events. Congratulations to the finalists 624, 1477, and 2773 for playing well in both finals matches!

A big congratulations to FIRST team 2936, Gatorzillas for winning their first RCA. What a story! 151 out reach programs just this year!

Congrats to FIRST teams 359, 118, and 1642 for their Regional win. An awesome exhibition of shooting in the finals.

And a big Texas sized thank you for Glenn from the Hawaiian Kids for making the long trip to come and play at Lone Star. Your team is the perfect example of what a Hall Of Fame team should be. Gracious from the start, and all through the competition.

I have started making arrangements on your offer to come to Hawaii next year! Good luck in St. Louis!

I'd like to point out that that was without any triple balancing, just double balancing. I'll admit I prefer winning, but losing after putting up a 6-ball Rube Goldberg auton and 90 total points.... well you have to respect an opponent that can win against that.

So, since we're doing the thanks here:
Thanks to 2415 and 3997 for the rather awesome and definitely fun alliance. We had a good run and a stellar last match, it's hard to ask for a better finish than that. Congrats to 2415 on the Engineering Inspiration, and 3997 for the Rookie All-Star. Best of luck to both of you at Champs, I'll be rooting for you.

Congrats to 118, 359, and 1642 on the regional win. It's hard to argue with that level of firepower, but we tried our best.

To Glenn from 359: You, sir, are the picture perfect definition of a gracious winner, and darned fun to talk to. You're welcome back any time. Just give us a heads up so we can lasso up the tornadoes in advance of your flight in. Also, my wife send her thanks for your kind gift of delicious chocolate covered macadamia nuts.

More congrats to 2936 on the Regional Chairman's, well deserved for a consistent and consistently large and enthusiastic team.

Huge thanks to 2587 for the loan/donation of a planetary stage from your 256:1 banebots gearbox to fix our exploded wedge gearbox. I'm hoping we left you enough parts to repair yours that broke slightly later. In the future, I'll make sure my agents are a little more clear if we'll be cannibalizing your part to repair our bot. I can guarantee you we'll never be borrowing parts for a 256:1 banebots gearbox again, if that's any consolation.

And now I think I'm going to collapse and try to recover from the non-stop fun and excitement of the last four days/months. Someone wake me up when it's kickoff.

Re: 2012 Lonestar Regional

With a high number of experienced teams coupled with one of the best FIRST games I've seen, I have to say Lone Star was the best regional this year!!

Congrats to 118, 359 and 1642 on their regional win. You guys did awesome and were amazing to watch through eliminations.

Congrats to 2936 on Regional Chairman's. You all really deserved it after all the hard work you do all year long.

And a huge thank you to 364, Team Fusion for looking past our horrible record and ranking and seeing the potential we had for your alliance. It was unfortunate that all the mechanical issues you could think of, happened to us in the semis. But despite all of that, we put up a great fight against the #2 seed alliance and we enjoyed working with you guys and look forward to working with you all again whenever you make your trip back to Houston.

Great regional everyone!! Now get some rest (including everyone that's going to St. Louis in 2 weeks) and get ready for some awesome championship matches. See ya next year!! :)

Another great Lone Star in the books.

I'm to tired to list all the thank yous, but to everyone that helps put on such an awesome regional every year from the regional committee, to the judges, inspectors, safety advisers, referees, volunteers, teams and everyone I'm forgetting, THANK YOU.

Hope to see a lot of you again at Championship, Texas Robot Rumble, and next year at Lone Star.

Here here and I second all the wonderful things everyone is saying about Lone Star this year. It is definately a power house regional! Congrats to
359, 1642, and 118 you guys had an incredible alliance!

Also to 2936 for Chairman's we watched your video and well...just HOLY COW!!

Lastly I want to say thank you to Gatozilla and Oscar for inviting us to join you in the elims. After a rough year in Logomotion we needed a moral booster and boy did we get it. We are the onlyalliance at Lone Star that TRIPLE BALANCED!! :yikes: (BTW I think we may have a really good picture of it if you guys want to PM me with an email address to send it to). :D

Thank you to everyone who attended Lone Star and most of all to Lucia who never fails to make Lone Star one of the most well run regionals in the nation!!

See you guys next year...

Re: 2012 Lonestar Regional

From Team 359 to everyone that made the Lone Star regional happen, thank you so much for making us feel very welcome to Texas and for letting us spread the aloha spirit!
As a member of the Hawaii regional committee (small part), I saw a lot of instances that our own teams could learn from you folks about GP and the generosity displayed by all teams.

Paul of team 1429: Thanks for all that you have done for us from kickoff to the last day of this tournament. I will miss you and your team if you don't come to CMP. Hope we see you in Hawaii next year, and you can bet that we will personally take care of you folks.

To all of the great robot competitors: 118, 624, 1477, 231, 2415, 364, 1429, etc....Thanks for making it a stressful weekend having to play all of you but never with you! :)

To team 57: thank you to all members of the Sevcik family that helped us feel welcome and for the great chats we had between rounds. Because of you folks, we may come back next year or attend Bayou.....if the schedule permits.

Thank You to our alliance partners, 118 and 1642. We made a great alliance that rivals any alliances from any regional. The pure firepower we displayed was just a thrill to be part of. :)

And finally to teams 624 and 1477, it was great collaborating with you both and sharing ideas about running a FIRST team, in addition to your great scoring machines.

See you all at CMP!

Re: 2012 Lonestar Regional

Congratulations to all of the teams who competed at Lone Star Regional and congratulations to the teams who garnered awards through their hard earned efforts.

I'd like to thank all of the teams that sent representatives to the NEMO meeting that occurred on Thursday. (I drove in for the meeting and had to leave shortly afterward for Austin and work. It was hard to leave, I have to tell you.) Teams, don't forget to watch for information regarding the summer workshops that Allen Gregory and Scott Rippetoe told you about during the meeting. Those workshops provide excellent opportunities for team development and building stronger skills.

A big thank you to the teams that traveled to Lone Star from out of town. You bring the spirit of your communities with you when you compete and it helps to strengthen the Regional community that you are a part of, even for a short amount of time. Many of you leave behind lasting memories as you return home.

On a personal note, I'd like to give a shout out to one of our Senior parents, Lynn Edgerton, who had her rookie experience traveling with the team. She was the only parent to do so this trip and it wasn't easy while dealing with car troubles and lost mentors (me). She is a trooper and I'm thrilled that she was able to experience the Lone Star Regional and traveling with our team. It will provide her with many memories of life with 418.

For me - I'll have memories of a few inspirational visits with mentors and students from the different teams, veteran and rookie - and of the smell of burned out motors. The inspirational visits were all too few and the smell of burned out motors was all too much. :)

Congrats to 359, 118, and 1642 for winning the Lone Star Regional!

We certainly missed the Hawaiian kids in Vegas this year. Glenn and his team are among my favorites in FRC. They spread Hawaiian goodwill everywhere they go and, oh yeah, they build incredible robots year in and out. A highlight from the 2011 Championships for me was seeing them win the CMP Chairman's award. Very deserving.

I, personally, am also very glad that 118 will now be in St. Louis as well. They are one of the teams that I make certain I stop by to admire the craftsmanship, engineering and creativity of their robot designs each of the years I've been fortunate enough to attend the Championships. This year will be no different.

Good luck to all and see you in St. Louis.
