How many teams have sucessfully done a triple balance?

So, has your team been part of a triple balance? Lets hear it!

Agentarrow 22-03-2012 17:28

Re: How many teams have sucessfully done a triple balance?

I guess I can start.
Team 469 has been part of 9 triple balances and was in the only double-triple thus far. Obviously we can't take all the credit, it was a collaborative effort of our alliance partners (Like 2851, 1023, and 3175) and also because of awesome balance assist mechanisms (like 67's utility arm, or our own peg leg).

I know there have been a bunch though, they're getting more and more common.

Re: How many teams have sucessfully done a triple balance?

3456 was involved in the only triple balance of the Utah Regional along with 4175 and 3230. We had no assisting mechanisms, albeit it was on done on the practice field...

touchdownjesus4 22-03-2012 17:34

Team 4028 was in two successful triple balances at BMR along with 1501 and 1756. Our triple was also the first successful stack maneuver where our robot was on top of 1501 and balanced with 1756.

Here's a picture of our triple stack:

Re: How many teams have sucessfully done a triple balance?

The teams I've seen are: 67, 469, 2851, 573, 3098, 3601, 1023, 3175, and perhaps 314, 201, and 2611 but I can't be sure.

On a related note, once we figure out who the teams who have triple balanced are, I wonder if the HOT Team will be willing to give out Loch Ness Monster stickers to all of them: http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...4&postcount=14

Or maybe you'll just have to triple balance with them to get the stickers. Either way, it looks like there will be stickers on a whole lot of robots by the end of the season!

Re: How many teams have sucessfully done a triple balance?

The Portland #8 alliance (can't remember the numbers) pulled off 6 triple balances in 7 matches. By some odd coincidence (:p), they also won 6/7 matches, and the event to boot.

JakeD 22-03-2012 18:03

Re: How many teams have sucessfully done a triple balance?

Portland was 360, 3711, and 956. I was running field reset so and I got to watch up close. The only match they didn't was because 3711 didn't move the entire match. That problem is still undetermined but the next match they were fixed enough to move straight but not turn, so 360 pushed them sideways till they lined up with the ramp and then balanced like normal.

Re: How many teams have sucessfully done a triple balance?

Well, if you want the story...

We seeded 6th at FLR, and had made our picklist to pick for best autonomous scoring, so as to compliment our balancing. Long story short, the second seed snapped up our first pick, and we modified our picklist to be one centered around triple balancing. To that regard, we picked exclusively wide robots with good bridge manipulators and high traction. Scoring was a second priority, though we did manage to rack up a few points in autonomous. Our final (and best alliance we have ever picked) was us (639), 3003, and 843.

Here's a video of it

In the first quarterfinal match, we were the one and only triple at Fingerlakes. We scored a few points in auton, and went straight for the bridge. We got the balance quite easilly, in fact, but our partner 3003 got their bumper caught on the edge of the field. The drivers saw it, and performed a precision maneuver to get off; some of the best driving I've seen all year. There's another angle of it. With this balance, we were able to upset the 3rd alliance and advance to the semis.

However, the next match, we weren't working for whatever reason. It is still unknown what happened. In the semis, we were working, but one of our partners wasn't. If you've got a dead robot, it pretty much precludes any sort of triple balance, so we ended up losing those two matches. Very good playing by the 340+3015 alliance, though. They would have been much closer if our alliance had been at full operating capacity.

We'll be at DC next week, and are quite excited to possibly pull off a few more triples. One last notable thing about our triples is the fact that we directed both of our alliance partners to drive against us, and let us push them. Our treads are sticky enough that we have the necessary traction to push them up while they drive against us, and it negates the effect of the robots sliding around the bridge.

Re: How many teams have sucessfully done a triple balance?

1918, 85 and 910 did it twice in the finals at West Michigan. The first one was not planned and was executed in less that 17 seconds from the time we determined it was needed. No balance assist use either time. However 1918 will have one be fore we get to Troy (if it works)

I started a new thread to take care of this titled "Triple Balance Peer Award". (Thanks for the reminder John!) It may take a couple days to appear, so i'm repeating the info below:

Anyway, we decided we would give Loch Ness Moster stickers to anyone that Triple Balanced with us this year.

After the Double Triple, we decided that 573, 3098, and 3601 were also worthy of some stickers.

We love you Paul! ;)

This now goes for anyone who pulls off the triple balance in competition this season. PM me your info and i'll mail you one to put on the robot.

I've already sent one to Texas, so I guess that officially opens the floodgates!

It started as a side challenge and a fun joke, but it's become more of a celebration of something exceptional and we'd like to share it with everyone.

I could also email you the .dwg file i made for this so you can print your own if you'd like and save me some postage.

Enjoy! And good luck to everyone, all of us would like to see as many teams as possible earn one.

Re: How many teams have sucessfully done a triple balance?

As mentioned before, 1023 balanced with 469 and 3175 in the eliminations at Detroit. Out of our 6 elimination matches we tripple balanced 4 times.

One time we tried to tripple balance, but our robot fell off the bridge. It was still hanging on a little bit though , so 3175 essentially rammed our robot off the bridge so they could try to double balance with 469 and almost tipped over in the process. In the last few seconds of the match 469 and 3175 managed to double balance and somehow our robot remained upright. Our robot was only damaged a little. It was probably one of the most nerve-wracking matches I've ever seen and I even screamed "STOP" several times when the robot was about to fall off.

You can see the video here along with the rest of the matches 469 was in:

The 599/1661/2599 alliance in San Diego pulled off a triple balance a couple times (I think twice).

Re: How many teams have sucessfully done a triple balance?

188/610/3360 did it at least 3 times during GTR East elims, using 610's bridge manipulator/ball collector device for assistance (it articulates through where the floor ordinarily is when the robot is not on a bridge, and they kept that a secret until they started using it to aid triple balances.)

1075/548/4307 did it in QF1-2 at GTR East as well, with no special gear, though 4307's small size and 1075's swerve drive to allow strafing onto the bridge certainly helped.

1918/85/910 has triple balanced in F1 & F2 as mentioned in the 2012 West Michigan District thread. I wonder how many teams will show up at the Michigan State Championship with the achievement of triple balancing and/or Loch Ness Monster sticker.

1024, 1720 and 1747 pulled off a triple balance in QF2 M1 at Boilermaker against the above mentioned alliance of 1501, 1756, and 4028.

I wish we would have been able to pull off the double-triple as well, but it wasn't meant to be last weekend.

Re: How many teams have sucessfully done a triple balance?

1023 has had 4 successful tripple balances all with 469 and 3175.

I believe we attempted 6 during eliminations, but we tipped over when we were trying to tripple balance in our first semi-final match. Luckily 469 and 3175 we still able to double balance without us. It was an exciting and scary match. Not much damage was done to our robot though. You can see the video here:

http://vimeo.com/38738965

You can hear me screaming "STOP" when our robot's about to fall off. I apologize to the cameraman of 469 for screaming out of control.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the very first triple balance... 148, 2936, and 922 at Alamo. We did it successfully three times, and attempted it two more. And Scorpion is now sporting one of 67's great Loch Ness Monster decals to commemorate the moment! (Thanks Adam and Jim!)

for semi finals at denver, we played against 3 wide orientation robots, 1157 and 2 others whose numbers I don't remember. on the second match of the semifinals, they beat us with a triple balance (their second of the regional). for the third match we parked perpendicular to their bridge and just sat there for the last minute while they pushed against us. It seems to be really easy to defend against if our experience at Denver is anything to go by

Teams 245, 3452, and 494 triple balanced against us in Niles (q4 match 1). They would have gotten it in match 2 as well, but they had something touching the field perimeter (I couldn't tell from the stands, but it looked like it was just a piece of plastic), so imo they got that one in spirit.

Definitely exciting to watch it happen no matter who is doing it.

I don't exactly remember which teams we were with, but my team's highlight of the Wisconsin Regional was triple balancing. We ended in dead last, but we all rejoiced when it happened! We were having constant technical difficulties throughout the competition, so it felt really great to be part of that. Only triple balance of the regional, i think.

If there are 2340 teams (which I read somewhere) this amounts to less than 5% of the teams (about 3.5%) after adding the five listed after the post identifying 76 teams... Pretty amazing!

67, 85, 118, 121, 125, 148, 177, 188, 228, 230, 236, 244, 245, 360, 453, 469, 494, 522, 548, 573, 599, 610, 639, 694, 843, 910, 922, 956, 1023, 1024, 1075, 1114, 1157, 1350, 1388, 1425, 1501, 1502, 1559, 1635, 1661, 1671, 1684, 1718, 1720, 1747, 1756, 1918, 2168, 2240, 2337, 2557, 2599, 2634, 2791, 2851, 2928, 2936, 3003, 3098, 3161, 3175, 3230, 3360, 3452, 3456, 3601, 3656, 3711, 3729, 3958, 3970, 4002, 4028, 4175, 4307

That's all that have qualified by merit, I can't find a database of Chairmans and EI winners. I included ourselves in it because I know that we got EI and thus qualified.

Notably, most of the teams in the club are from Michigan, so the events that MSC brings will likely be very different than those at MAR. Also, only 12 robots can come from MSC, so there are quite a few triple balancers who will be staying home.

Found a few more, I think. Still, pretty impressive (good or bad, not sure).

67, 85, 118, 121, 125, 148, 177, 188, 228, 230, 236, 244, 245, 360, 453, 469, 494, 522, 548, 573, 599, 610, 639, 694, 843, 910, 922, 956, 1023, 1024, 1075, 1114, 1157, 1350, 1388, 1425, 1501, 1502, 1559, 1635, 1661, 1671, 1684, 1718, 1720, 1747, 1756, 1918, 2168, 2240, 2337, 2557, 2599, 2634, 2791, 2851, 2928, 2936, 3003, 3098, 3161, 3175, 3230, 3360, 3452, 3456, 3601, 3656, 3711, 3729, 3958, 3970, 4002*, 4028, 4175, 4307

Bold = current merit-based, Underline = attending otherwise, Italics = qualified but not registered. I may have missed a few "qualified but not registered"; 4002 just caught my attention.

I don't think that 85, 244, or 4002 are qualified for CMP. I think they won awards (Chairman's, Rookie All Star, etc.) at MI district events, but that only qualifies them to compete for those awards at MSC where the overall winners qualify for CMP.

Yes, we have pre-registered for CMP. So we are not a merit-based registered team as of now.

I would be very interested if someone could figure out which of these teams made the balance happen with a bridge assister and which were just a wide bot that was taken along for the ride. The number of teams that can do that will really be interesting when alliance selections at championships rolls around.

It isn't always that simple. There are often multiple responsibilities such as lowering the bridge, clearing balls from under the bridge, stabilizing the bridge and, just in case, salvaging a balance if one robot runs off the end of the bridge. Depending on the strategy, these responsibilities can be spread out between the three bots (as they often are), or they can all be handled by one robot (which I would imagine would be uncommon).

Sorry, I'm getting my underlines and boldings confused :o darn formatting tags

16, 67, 85, 118, 121, 125, 148, 177, 188, 228, 230, 236, 244, 245, 360, 453, 469, 494, 522, 548, 573, 599, 610, 639, 694, 843, 910, 922, 956, 1023, 1024, 1075, 1114, 1157, 1219, 1350, 1388, 1425, 1501, 1502, 1559, 1635, 1661, 1671, 1684, 1718, 1720, 1747, 1756, 1918, 2056, 2168, 2240, 2337, 2557, 2599, 2634, 2791, 2851, 2928, 2936, 3003, 3098, 3161, 3175, 3230, 3360, 3452, 3456, 3601, 3656, 3711, 3729, 3958, 3970, 4002, 4028, 4090, 4175, 4307

Is that better? (The FIRST team listing site seems to be down, so I cannot actually prove that 2056 and 1219 are attending Worlds, just that they're qualified.)

I saw that! Great job! We practiced successfully three times in DC but couldn't pull it off in a match, unfortunately. Good thing we managed it at FLR!

Re: How many teams have sucessfully done a triple balance?

A little more data:

In MI: 10 districts * 8 alliances * 3 teams = 240 teams with a possible triple. 21 in MI have done it. That's almost 9%.
*actually, many of those '240 teams' are repeated, leaving a much smaller number to divide by. Combining just Waterford, Northville and Troy results in 7 of 24 alliances pulling off a triple. That's 29% of the alliances at those events!!!

Outside MI: 51 regionals * 8 alliances * 3 teams = 1224 teams. At least 63 have done it. That's just over 5%.
*this is likely also skewed a little by the repeated teams.

Of the top 10 teams qualified for MSC, 7 have been part of a Triple Balance.
Of those 7, only 4 have done it at more than one event.
Of those 4, only 2 have done it at more than two events.

Well, Jason, you have to account for double counting. We don't even have 240 teams in Michigan!

Ok, you're right, i went in the wrong direction, but at least i noticed it and fixed it a whopping 2 min before you corrected me!!!

How about this:
In MI: Of 190 teams, 21 have done it so far => 11%
Outside MI: Of 2150(?) teams, at least 63 => 3%

I've searched and can't seem to find anything..... has anyone published stats on how many of these teams won a regional with the triple balance?

It would be interesting to see how many regionals are being won with shooting points alone(and assuming either 1 or 2 bridge balance)..or shooting and triple balance. Two of the three regionals that our team attended (Portland, and 2 fields in Seattle) were won with the triple balance. just curious to see %'s on this.

We've pulled it off on a practice bridge, but not yet in competition. Our robot is a long base, so we could only do it with the help of our stingers. We're hoping to do it in a match at the Michigan State championship.

We (1023, 469, 3175)did not end up "needing" the triple to win the Detroit district, if that is what you are asking.

Team 45, 3940, 781 won Queen City Regional yesterday and triple balanced MULTIPLE times in the elimination round, but in last game Team 48 prevented them from getting a triple balance by attacking bots lining up. However, the winning margin (2 points) was from a HUMAN shot!!!!!

I think one of my most enduring memories from QCR will be watching 45, 781, and 3940 triple balancing on the practice field over and over again during lunch on Saturday. Their accomplishments were not random - a direct result of fantastic scouting, great strategy, and effective practice.

862 1718 and 3322 completed a triple balance in Quarterfinal 1-2 at the Michigan State Championship. Unfortunately we lost that match 97-90..

Re: How many teams have sucessfully done a triple balance?

Add 341, 25, and 1640 to the list! We triple balanced all 5 times we got on the bridge. The sixth time there was heavy defense that prevented us from being able to balance (but which cost our opponent 8 fouls).

You can also add 33 and 2137 to the list. 3089 is aready on it. We were successful every time we attempted; unfortunately, it is very difficult to tripple with tipped or dead robots. I certain we will perform more tripples at worlds.

Yes, It was quite unfortunate what happened to us in matches 1 and 3 in the semifinals at MSC. We made the triple balance look so easy when we had the opportunity.

You can also add 830 (with 67 and 469) and 2054 (with 245 and 548) to the list. It was very impressive to see 2 long bots hanging off the bridge. I'm sure someone must have got a good photo.

You can probably count on Dan Ernst having gotten a dozen good photos! :)

There should be a "Ghost of the Loch Ness Monster" or something similar for being part of a double triple. :)

You don't know how worried 2054 was that they tipped you over. We made sure as an alliance that it wouldn't happen in the next 2. Very sorry that happened to you in match 1 and 33 died in match 3. As the winning alliance told us after the last match, we would rather compete against you at your best.

Also with regards to the 2 long bot triple balance... I think we win the award for the ugliest triple balance this season!

Have there been any double triples outside of Michigan?

I saw 624 118 and 2936 triple balance on the practice field at lone star. The three teams were entirely split between alliances so nothing like that happened for them during eliminations.

The following teams triple balanced at the championship:

Archimedes: 195, 973, 1114, 1218, 2046, 2056, 2415, 2557, 2590, 2648, 2851, 4334
Curie: 78, 254, 341
Galileo: 16, 25, 33, 148, 180, 1718, 1918, 2337, 3322
Newton: 68, 118, 181, 330, 548, 639, 1519, 1662, 1983, 2194, 2834, 3357

It's crazy to think how many alliances picked based on the triple balance on curie and only 1 alliance managed to pull it off.

Where did you get those statistics from? Did you actually have scouts to go watch all 4 fields?
2834 was super excited about our double triple in the quarterfinals on Newton. We spent a lot of time to design and build that arm before MSC but didn't get a chance to triple balance there. It was a great way to end the season to triple balance for the first time. It was easy having the arm to go below the bridge to stabilize it while the 3 robots shift slowly to balance.

I know awhile ago someone posted the most triple balanced frc teams. Is anyone still keeping track of this? Also thanks to 1075, 4307, 67, 3656, 2054, 245, 118, and 2194 for being amazing triple balancing partners throughout the season!

On behalf of team 1075, thank you team 548 and team 4307 for making our triple balance possible! While it was team 1075's only triple balance of the season, it was exhilarating for everyone in the arena to watch.
Thanks for helping us maneuver the first triple balance on Canadian soil!
