I'm going to throw team 701 into the mix. They always have a very solid robot, but always end up being picked by the middle alliances, which in CA rarely win the regional.

I know 177 has won regional events before, but according to their site their last victory was in 2006. That's about as far back as 1718 goes, so if you ignore the head start some teams have had, 177 has been by far the most impressive team without a regional victory (they have won 5 divisions and 2 championships in that time).

My nomination from New Hampshire / Massachusetts is Team 1153, the Robo-Rebels. Every year, they produce an excellent high-quality robot that is one to be reckoned with in the elimination rounds. However, despite regularly mopping up robot-related judged awards and being regional finalists twice, a regional win has somehow eluded them. They've even won New England's Premier off-season event, BattleCry, which tends to have a tougher combined field than any individual New England regional, but have yet to collect a blue banner.

Seconded for 1153. That particular BattleCry in 2007 they defeated the juggernaut that was 40 and 121, and were the last to do so. 40 and 121 (40 and 78 in 2010 and 2011) would go on to win the next 4 BattleCry's together as the #1 seed in all cases.

Their 2009 robot was one of the best in New England, losing to the regional champions in Semifinals at Boston and Finals in Philadelphia, and reaching finals at BattleCry in a close series with the aforementioned 40/121 combo.

I feel like them Winning in newton and then winning champs in 2010 kinda disqualifies them from this thread. haha

A couple of teams worthy of mention.

1731 - Seeded #1 at the VCU regional as a rookie in 2006. Had an absolutely incredible robot in 2008 that was unfortunately beaten in the finals twice (including going hurdle for hurdle with 1024* and 1126 in Buckeye, with F-2 being decided by a hybrid period miscue). Has been a consistent elimination contender since then. A pair of semi-final exits this year.

612 - 3x Regional Chairman's Awards, 2x Regional Finalist. Typically a first round selection or alliance captain at most events they attend. Was on the #8 alliance at both of their events this year, unfortunately resulting in two QF losses.

*1024 won three regionals, reached Einstein, and went to the finals at IRI in 2008.

And 2007 (Newton Division and World Champs with 190 and 987). I'm fairly confident say that 177 is the ONLY team to have won two Championships without having won any regionals in that time span.

However, the thread is about regional wins, and technically they haven't won a regional since 2006, regardless of how impressive their championship record is.

I'm still amazed 1718 has never won an event.

Thanks for the mention! I hope we can either be one of those top picking teams next year or take a middle alliance to the top and defy the odds. (or heck maybe win Spokane this weekend)

Also at Sac as already mentioned, 1323 Madtown. Their robots are just so elegant every year. As a young freshman before I knew any better I used to think they were the Cheesy Poofs. The color scheme didn't help me differentiate until I started to learn some team numbers.

The bumpers don't look great in this picture but the rest of the robot is so nicely machined.

Agreed about 1153. 2648, 172, and 238 also merit particular callouts - I believe all have yet to win a regional, despite being great teams on and off the field!

Not to toot our own horn, but 40 and 78 didn't win BattleCry in 2011... our alliance with 1073 and 238 won at BattleCry. Regardless, 40 and 121/78's 3-year streak at BattleCry was very impressive!

We have a tendency to peak late in the season. We usually need an event or two to figure out the best way to improve our robot best for the game. We also usually need to ring out several issues with our robots at our first event.

True, they came close several times. Almost beat HOT in 2010 on Newton.
They are my buds, and I believe they will win soon!!!!!!!!!!

I'd have to stick in Team 2733 (The Pigmice). A super-awesome team that, for some inexplicably ridiculous reason, has never won a single FRC Regional!! They came super close in 2011 when they teamed up with us, but unfortunately, we came up short of victory in the finals of the Portland Autodesk Regional.

I agree with this one! For the record, 1731 was a part of the 2008 IRI alliance with 1024 that went to the finals. They played the first match in the eliminations as our (1024) backup because we had an issue to fix. They were an awesome robot and team!

Wait... a chance to make fun of 1323's bumpers? I'm in! :deadhorse:

Could we also add longest drought between regional wins? I know 33 went from 2005 -> 2011 and 27 went from 2003 -> 2011.
