I will be disappointed if I don't see a Fingerlakes team Newton Champions.

That said, this division looks insanely packed. My friends and I were listing the top four shooters this year: 469, 67, 341, and 1717. We've got two of them in Newton.

2468 - Team Appreciate is excited to be in Newton.

We have been in Galileo our other two trips.

We are excited to be competing again with 118, 457, 488, 2936 and 3310 from our previous Regionals this year. Hope to be on the field with them again. We are also looking forward to seeing some of the other machines we have watched on webcasts this year.

Oh and Kirstie and Natalie are excited to meet you Justin ;D

I have to include Team Tators (2122) in the PNW too. Looking at the OPR data 4 of the top 12 are PNW teams.

#3 1983
#5 2122
#11 488
#12 1540

Can't wait to see the scores any of these teams together can put up. Add in 469, 1717, plus the fact that the entire Division OPR average is a point and a half higher then any other division and there will be lots of baskets being scored.

222 is excited to be in Newton! This is a very interesting field of machines and teams. There should be lots of very exciting matches in our division. We currently have a peg leg and a new shooter that we installed for MAR championships. We are looking to improve our shooter by implementing the "Bang-Bang" motor controller to help shooter wheel speed control.

Team 1111 is also a long bot that can hang off the end of the bridge to make room for a triple. Our CG is back-biased so with the middle of our center wheel at the edge of the bridge we are balanced. We also have a brake mode.

1111: Long robot
Space on bridge: 24" with bumpers

Re: Newton 2012!

639: Wide Robot
Space on Bridge: 24" with bumpers
Stinger: No. But we do have a special balance feature: Super treads. I invite anyone in Newton to come by and feel up our treads, or to a pushing match with any other robot. They are incredibly sticky on both carpet and the bridge.
We have two balance strategies that take advantage of this outlined below:
  1. Have both our partners get onto the bridge from either side that is convenient
  2. Cross over into barrier into alley so we can be protected from defense (not that we couldn't barrel straight through it if we needed to, but better safe than sorry)
  3. Once we reach the end of the bridge, and begin pushing the other two up, we tell them to drive against us so they don't fall off the other edge. We can push the other two robots up the bridge no sweat, and in low gear we have the granularity we need to get the balance.
Option two, we played around with at DC with a stinger enabled team, 1218:
  1. Be first one on the bridge.
  2. Allow middle robot on
  3. Allow stinger robot on to push up the bridge. The combination of low gear and the sticky treads make our robot unable to slip or slide off the bridge like so many others, so we make an ideal endcap.
Tripled: Yes, once, as alliance captain. We would have done it many more times but robot failure not on our part precluded it.

Team 842:
  • Long Robot
  • Have brakes and treadpads to increase traction on the bridge when hanging off.
  • Can hang off a pretty good amount don't know how much room we leave.
  • Have a stinger to help with triple balance further if needed. Must be deployed opposite of traditional way due to robot height.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEy596leBjA
  • Have not done triple balance in actual match but have done it multiple times while practicing with teams 610 and 4183. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NDBS...mR6bPWnqCezto=

As long as teams are posting videos and pictures about their robots and new features. Here's something we started working on in January and just finally added to our robot. We had to lighten up a few other components to make weight for our “stinger” but it is functional and works well. You can also see that we can cantilever quite a bit of our robot off the edge of the bridge. In the video our 2004 robot is attempting to push our dead off-season robot up the bridge. Then our practice robot finishes the job and deploys the balance assist mechanism. We designed around the possibility of a triple balance and hope to get the chance to use our it at Championship.

Buzz 17 is also a long bot but looking to triple!

Capable and ready. We were able to triple balance twice on the practice field in CT with three long robots, courtesy of our partners 126 Gael Force and 869 Power Cord.

NEU CT Regional PF Triple Balance #1

NEU CT Regional PF Triple Balance #2

We weren't able to pull it off on the real field due to varying complications, but we're ready to give it a go. Our robot has an offset CG so that we may hang more than half of the robot off the edge.

Photos to be added soon.

2468 Team Appreciate Bot

Long Bot with six AndyMark pnuematic wheels for drive but can balance with only four wheels on the bridge due to CG being located closer to end opposite of the stinger add on. We have put tripled balanced on the practice field but not on the competition field. Link to picture. The middle robot (456) was a mecanum robot turned sideways.

We have since added a stinger to our robot as well. Link to Youtube Video with two of our old robots. Our driver, Claude was pushing bot of these robots up with the robot. The middle robot is a mecanum drive base.

We take up about 24" on the bridge to balance with the use of the stinger for a triple balance.

We can tip the bridge to us or away from us on one and away from with the other end.

Can cross the barrier or the bridge to move from end of the field to the other.

Balanced on the Coopertition Bridge in Dallas West seven matches.

Good luck to all next week.

Let the fun begin.

Will we see any strategies revealed at Championships that have not been shown yet?

Re: Newton 2012!

Similar to what I did in previous years, I ran through 200 simulated qualification match schedules (with 9 matches per team, using the FIRST match generator).

I used each team's highest adjusted opr at any event to choose that team's "best event". Then, for that event, I used their unadjusted OPR for their contribution to a match. I also used the hybrid OPR, bridge OPR, teleop OPR to help calculate the standings. For the co-op bridge, I summed the co-op OPR for all 6 robots in the match and compared that to a threshold. When back-testing against regionals, if the threshold was chosen to be close to the number of actual co-ops at the regional, it had a relatively high correlation to the actual results on the co-op bridge. Almost all regionals had a correlation co-efficient of between 0.6 and 0.85. However, at the Michigan State Championship, the correlation coefficient was only 0.3. I believe this is because almost all of the robots there were able to balance so the balances that didn't happen weren't be cause of the robots, but because of luck. I used this method for calculating the co-ops, trying to get a co-op percent of around 60% (higher then most regionals, but lower then MSC). Overall, this isn't a very good way to do it, as it punishes teams at early regionals and regionals where teams did not co-op that much. However, it's included to help simulate the randomness of the rankings this year. All OPR data is from Ed Law's spreadsheet.

I calculated the results for each of the 200 simulated qualification schedules, and then looked at some statistics from the aggregate results.

Since the standings are much more complicated this year, and the co-op bridge is so important, and there isn't a very good way to simulate it, I looked at both the ranks, the number of qualification points, and the number of wins.

Everyone should attend Karthik's presentation at the championships where he covers "Why 'OPR' is a flawed indicator in Rebound Rumble".

The following were the values that were used in the simulation

1/200 chance of being first seed? I'll take it.

Re: Newton 2012!

1640
Orientation: unicorn swerve drive, so we prefer wide during triples (and our bridge manipulator is on the wide side)
Balance assist: no stinger, but
- Drivetrain brake - twist Colson Performa wheels perpendicular or caddy corner. The swerve also lets us stay straight even if pushed up off-center, as well as get around or through bridge defense or cause serious fouls against the defender.
- Harpoon arm - not our normal bridge-lowering device (~1min modular change), but if we're the 1st bot in a triple balance, it keeps us from falling off and allows us to hang halfway off the bridge in wide configuration. If we're middle, it can also be helpful to hold most 1st (or 3rd) robots on the bridge, should you desire an extra safety net. The harpoon will not damage your robot, but please make sure your bumpers are legal. :)
Triple Experience: 5/6 in the MAR finals. 1 done under heavy defense, 1 lost to heavy defense in which our alliance caused 24 points in fouls against the defender. (Capable at Horsham, but not needed.) Another 12/12 as middle on the practice field with 7 different teams. Another 2/3 as first robot on the practice field without our harpoon (1 loss of driver control).

Re: Newton 2012!

Team 3937 out of Searcy AR
Long bot
Drive - 6 wheel drop center west coast
Feeder -two stage feeder system for easy automatic loading
Can hold three balls
Shooter - dual 550 motor shooter
Can shoot in any goal
PID turret control for >180 degrees of movement quickly and efficiently
Three controls for shooting: automatic using an ultrasonic sensor, manual for simple pot control, feeder for defense
Bridge - dual pneumatic bridge lowerer
Lowers bridge and can feed bot at the same time to keep balls from rolling under bridge
Can flip the bridge both ways to remove balls without trouble if needed
Has balanced numerous single and doubles, haven't had the opportunity for a triple
Autonomous
Can shoot in top and middle reliably, can also back feed at time intervals from 0 to 10 secs based on what partners need.

Since Dan Green MCs wherever we go, it's probably him.

Chiniqua (Shiniqua?) usually does Newton, but I would like nothing more than Dan Green. Also, JonDarr.

The pit map is out! Let's just say that Newton is closest to the bathrooms.

Where did you find the pit map?

Clayton Yocom 24-04-2012 07:53

Its only on the mobile app at the moment. Its in the android/app store under the name "FIRST Robotics". Pretty nifty.

Re: Newton 2012!

Team 1519 (Mechanical Mayhem, from Milford, New Hampshire) Robot Info:
  • Wide orientation robot
  • Drive: 8 WD, 6" Pneumatic Wheels (extremely grippy on bridge and carpet)
  • 2-speed transmissions; very low gear (~2fps) for fine control on bridge
  • Bridge Balance Assist: no specific mechanism; however, we designed our entire robot to optimize balancing. Can hang end wheels off of bridge with exceptional stability (see video below) so that only 17.5" of our frame is over the bridge surface. As seen in the video, extremely low gearing effectively serves as a drivetrain brake.
  • Bridge Balancing Experience: Don't just take our word for it -- see 1114's scouting database which lists us as the #1 balancer at both GSR and NCR. Performed more co-opitition balances at both regionals (GSR and NCR) than any other team there. Fast double-balances in all of our elimination matches (except GSR finals where robot failure took our partner away!)
  • Bridge Tipper: tip down on one side (normal approach); can also use robot to flip bridge up for partner on opposite side
  • Ball Intake: Two-sided (front and back), each 21.5" wide
  • Ball Storage: Three balls, controlled by sensors to avoid pickup of 4th ball
  • Ball Shooter: Single axle, camera-processed PID controls of shooter wheel speed, shooter exit angle (elevation) and turret direction to increase shot accuracy (recent software tuning has increased our accuracy since NCR)
  • Autonomous:
    • Tip co-op bridge w/ball pickup to score up to 5 high baskets. (Normally only balls available for 4 high baskets.)
    • Tip own alliance bridge if an alliance member has autonomous which can score balls from co-op bridge
    • Configurable shot times to avoid ball congestion with partners. (Two balls shot 1-2 seconds apart, with time of first shot varying from 2-13 seconds into hybrid.)
    • "Sit and Score" including "A-Bomb" modes (send or receive)
  • Other Capabilities:
    • Barrier crossing
    • Defense: High-traction drivebase for pushing (used this to great advantage during GSR elimination matches - yes we were the defensive robot!)
  • 2012 Tournament Performance:
    • GSR (Week 1): Finalists. #7 seed, most co-op balances of regional. Selected alliance partners of 885 and 2791. Went 5-0 in first five elimination matches against #2, #3, #1 seeds before catastrophic failure of alliance partner in 2nd finals match reduced our alliance to 2 robots.
    • NCR (Week 6): Winners. #1 seed, most co-op balances of regional. Selected alliance partners of 1311 and 2642.
  • 2012 Robot Video:

From what other people have been saying, it's only been released on the app, but has been posed in that forum for convenience.

Well Newton is playing out very differently than expected, just like other divisions. Anyone care to make new predictions at this point?

I'm confused what do you mean its not playing out as expected?
Do you mean 469 ?
1717 and 118 are seeded in the top 3.

That was hilarious, what were 1241 thinking? I'm impressed that they held that triple co-op balance for even a few seconds, shame it didn't last the whole way.

Interested to hear what was going on in the driver's stations during that match.

Without the insight of being behind the glass it almost looked like 610 died in the way of the bridge and they figured try to triple to get the co-op points. Then 610 came back to life and upset the balance.

Does anyone have any video of that? I'm curious about this :D

Re: Newton 2012!

488 looks like a major casualty to the ranking system, sitting at less than half the matches with CP. If they had co-op'd every match (instead of 3/8), they'd be 2nd seed. Even 6/8 would land them 10th seed. They're at 40th right now.

MOE hasn't had fabulous luck in that regards either.

Despite that, seems like Newton's doing pretty good with getting co-ops, and the elims will be really exciting.

New guesses for first round picks:
1717 118
68 469
365 1023
2122 1519
79 111
548 488
1640 330
1662 1983

2200:

Winner of GTR West with 2056 and 4001.
  • Six 8" pneumatic wheels
  • Wide orientation robot
  • Triple balance: Easily, seven times.
  • Dual speed gearbox: Approximately 4ft/sec and 12ft/
  • Flexible, tested autonomous - feed balls, knock down bridge in less than two seconds
  • Barrier crossing
  • Defensive

Re: Newton 2012!

So apparently 118 got red carded in their last match for contacting the opponent's bridge while they were balancing.. but I don't think they did. I was watching, and They only hit the coop bridge once on accident. I hope they dispute that. Did anyone see 118 hit the opponent's bridge?

George Nishimura 28-04-2012 11:37

Re: Newton 2012!

They touched the co-op bridge as far as I remember.

118 accepting 548 makes their route to Einstein harder [because it allows 1717 and 469 to team up], but probably gets them the best alliance they could make. Big gamble, it could be a huge finals match [if they both get there].

Well, it wasn't like 118 could have declined from the 12th seed. These elimination matches will be very, very interesting, to say the least.

Wait, did they actually get a red? They hadn't updated the table for me... well then fair enough.

118 has the dubious distinction of being the only team in Newton with a DQ showing on their rankings. Refresh the page if you need to.

Re: Newton 2012!

What's with the communication issues? So far 1717, 330, and 610 have lost their connections to the field. The indicator light above the alliance station goes from disabled to enabled and then the robot sometimes comes back. Last match 1717 died and came back along with 330. Really disappointed that this has to happen.

Newton was a great *division*. The field itself was terrible. Probably the worst field for communication outside of Einstein.

Re: Newton 2012!

Team 1023 would like to thank everyone on Newton division for an awesome experience. We enjoyed seeing old friends and getting to know new ones! We want to thank the alliances that followed through with co-ops with this Michigan team, and we want to thank all of the teams that played with us. It was great to work with you all.

11 - Thanks so much for picking us. We wish we could have made it further, but we really enjoyed working with you!

469 - From passing each other at lunch time on the way out and deciding to stop together for lunch, to playing an awesome match together, to helping us with a couple matches we missed scouting data on, to potential gummy bear kidnappings, to dinner on Saturday.. we greatly enjoyed sharing our world championship experience with you all! Would have loved to have a repeat of Detroit, but at least we enjoyed some fun together!

4294 - You inspire us. We enjoyed helping you with scouting data, and thank you for all the help you all gave with scouting. Sorry we had computer issues so you couldn't utilize it all the time, but I hope it helped you and gave you a feel for scouting! :) We loved getting to know you this year and working with you again in Newton!

365 - MOE - You inspired my Dana Unicorns way back in 2000 at Epcot and were one of the teams that planted a seed in a bunch of 4th - 8th graders which blossomed into the Bedford Express. It was an honor to watch you play and hang out with you!

610 - Coyotes - It was great to play with you and to see you in the hotel! We enjoyed getting to know you a little and look forward to seeing you again in the future.

548 - Congrats on being first seed and for leading your alliance to the Newton title!

To our honorary BX (123-COSMOS) team members, thanks for joining us on our trip and for adding so much to our experience. We enjoyed you greatly!

To all of our Michigan teams in Newton - it was great to see you and have a chance to play with you some more.

Thanks to everyone who played fair, exhibited gracious professionalism in their game, and made this experience a great one! The thing I love BEST about FIRST is not the robots, but the gracious professionalism that is taught and exhibited and which truly changes lives! Each act of gracious professionalism makes the FIRST program stronger. It is always a pleasure to be in the company of these teams!

Of course.. to all of the volunteers.. THANK YOU! You make everything in FIRST possible and without you, we couldn't have the spectacular competition that we do. Thank you for your time!

We hope you all had safe travels home and are (or are getting close) to your home! Hope to see you next year! We made many new friends, and we hope to see you soon!

Re: Newton 2012!

Newton was such an awesome field for my first year at worlds. I'd like to give a shoutout to a few teams in particular.

330 and 639 - Thanks to our scouting data we were able to grab 330 from 28th seed and 639 for 88th seed. That alliance made triple balancing look easy, and our full court defense strategy propelled us to division finalists. We had a great run, and I hope to see you all again next year.

548, 2194, and 118 - Congrats on winning Newton! the scoring from both 118 and 548, as well as the great defense played by 2194 took the field by storm and knocked down your opponents 1 by 1. It was an honor playing you in the division finals and I can't wait to see what you come up with next year.

1516 and 3357 - For doing a random unplanned triple balance with us on the practice field.

Everyone else - See you all next year, and may we meet at IRI.

Brandon Holley - Thanks for the signature on our robot. ;)
