Team 166's Bomb Robot

For those of you that weren't at GSR this year, BAE was having a raffle for the State Police's old EOD robot, and we won it! We have just now gotten around to really using it / planning what were going to do to it.

The robot as it was when we received it:

A video taken tonight of its gripper operating:

We have many ideas and plans for this robot and im sure it will be exciting to see how it turns out!

The gripper doesn't actually have that much power, it is able to crush a can of soda, but only till it's about a half inch thick.

Pretty cool.

What are you thinking of doing with it?

...sadface. My regionals have never done something like that. I can just hear my teachers now. "And what did you do over the weekend?" "Oh, the usual. Went to robotics. Won an EOD robot. NBD."

good luck with that!

our team also won a bomb robot a few years ago, but hopefully yours is in better condition then ours. most of the the replacement parts we needed to get it to work cost $1000-$14000 :(

The T3 sticker is on one of the robots motor controllers for the drive motors.
This is a picture of the spare motor controller:

And here is a picture of the controls on the robot itself:

And heres a video of it driving and operating its boom:

So, is the mallet thing, uh, what exactly is that for? I'm sure that there has to be a better solution that that. Re-solder bad joints, add better cooling, check for shorts, etc. but if the mallet 'trick' is doing anything, I doubt it's good for the robot.

We believe that the 2 optical isolators inside the control box (the red things in the right side of the control box) that control the boom are kind of touchy / dying, everything else seems to work fine. unfortunately to get to the isolators that control the boom we need to take all the controls out of the box to and replace the isolators. But at the moment we don't want to do that as we want to demo this at the towns police open house this coming weekend.
