Black, white, red, and gold. But why this is in the Java subforum is the real question.

I would say the most common colours are Red and Black. Our colours are our school colours, orange and blue, but most people notice us as an Orange team, mainly because of our Bright orange Jersey's that we have had for a while :)

Ours are also blue and orange, except we're more known for being blue (a darker sort of blue)

I feel like the most common colors I've seen are black, blue, red and green.

Purple and white for us -- though our school colors are green and white.

There aren't that many purple teams out there, and given Wildstang's colors, I rather doubt there's any unused color!

Robogineer1649 04-06-2012 21:21

We have bright yellow as our color. It is easy to see in a crowd.

Re: Team Colors

Our team colors are Black and orange. Those are our school colors and it seemed to fit because Tigers are our mascot. We are also known for our drive team wearing bright orange dickies; I think the MC in 2008 at Colorado coined our drive team the chain gang because of the resemblance to jail color pants.

I believe 610 uses green and white.

We use either black on yellow, or yellow on black depending on what we vote that year.

I never see much pink or brown or other colors that have red, but not yellow or blue in them

Royal Blue and Orange, although those seem to be fairly common. I haven't seen many teams use colors like Forest Green, Burgundy, or Silver/Gray

Our team colors are garnet and black, drawn from our lead sponsor: the University of South Carolina. Yellow and white have also been used as accents over the years, and gray was used as part of an all-black-everything motif this year (as a one-year thing).

I would stick that onto any odd mix (but I cannot think of any odd pairs).
Really though, in FIRST, you never can rule out any combination.

Although, once you stare at Wildstang and MOE, you see colors that you never thought existed. (Seeing them compete on Newton together made my mind pop).

If you want an unused color combo, go with brown, pink, and sky blue. Only a few teams I know of use pink (mainly the Pink Team), one uses brown (UPS), and a few use sky blue (Discobots come to mind). No one uses brown/blue or brown/pink that I'm aware of. Lime green or black are the most used colors.

Robonauts are black, white, and gold with red and blue accents, and that color set in various combinations is fairly common. The key is making your logo use the colors in an eye catching way and integrating the logo/color scheme across your entire team. So whatever colors you use, common or rare, you can still stand out. No one confuses CRyptonite 624 with 365 MOE, because of the branding they use even though they are both lime green and black.

Re: Team Colors

Purple :D It's fairly common in our area. I would say blue and black are most common here. Orange too maybe

JonathanZur1836 04-06-2012 23:08

Re: Team Colors

Red is our main color (as is noticed by our red jumpsuits :D ), silver is our secondary base color, and we use black to outline. In the past it hasn't been standard enough, but that will improve in the near future. When trying to get something a little cheaper, we just go with all red, maybe a small amount of black outline. I feel that variations of red and blue are the most common colors out there, but it still doesn't seem generic because each team has a different theme. In terms of least used colors, I don't see much plain green or brown in LA, but on the other hand, we do have a lot of orange (see teams 294 which is orange & blue, 973 which is orange, and 1515 which is orange) out here in SoCal.

EricH 04-06-2012 23:11

Re: Team Colors

If I wanted to go with the absolute least used colors, brown and grey. 330 used to stand out in a large crowd as a small grey blob (as opposed to the large PINK and MOE Green blobs), but switched permanently to royal blue and yellow (school colors are royal blue and white). Brown, as noted, is really only used by one or two teams. Grey, as far as I know, isn't used by anybody in particular. Used right, they could work well together...

Colors that get a lot of use or are associated with specific teams:
Green (8, 610, 217, 365 (the aforementioned MOE), 179...)
Blue (330, 60, 254, 68, you get the picture)
White, just about every team has used at some point.
Black and white, 1983 (Skunkworks) and 1538 (Holy Cows) come to mind right away.
Red tends to crop up on Canadian teams, as well as a lot of U.S. teams.
Yellow, not as common but can be quite common in the right area of the country.
Pink is associated with 233... but there are one or two other teams that do use that color.

I've been wearing orange pants at competitions also! This makes me orange from head to toe (except i need some orange shoes, or ductape orange on some old shoes). I've gotten a lot of compliment for them, and wore them to RoboProm, with a royal Blue Dress Shirt :D

Re: Team Colors

Electric Blue accented with Fire, mainly through the use of orange. The example can be seen in our logo, which is my user picture.

When our team was first founded (right after Hurricane Katrina) we went with the Mardi Gras theme of purple, green and yellow to represent our tattered city, calling ourselves the Northshore Krewe. The next year we changed our name (Nuts and Volts) and colors, taking on burgundy because one of our members was absolutely fixed upon us being burgundy. Unfortunately we later found out that Nuts and Volts was magazine and we were almost infringing on copyright. Then we finally became the Team Combustion that we are today, using electric blue. One of our most dedicated student leads (ahem, my older sister) wanted a bright color because she felt that would help us stick out.

Considering all of our changes we now advise all the rookies we help to pick a color/name/theme and stick to and embrace it as much as possible. It took us much to long to start our branding process..

I've only seen one team use brown, and that's UPS (1675)(brown and gold). Outside of those, most colors are covered (and teams with Tye-Dye like wildstang make sure of that).
If you're trying to go for a unique color combination/look, maybe try doing a unique pattern or surface (ie giraffe spots or glittey/sequinned shirts, or both!).

That's what I came in here to say. Odds are, your color won't be unique.

We're flame-patterned, taking it overboard (flame pants for everyone on the team). Obviously, there are other flame teams, but a lot less than red/black/orange. Find a pattern/overall team theme, and run with it.

Oooo, those are nice colors. I like plum a lot, though finding the right color shirt might be interesting.

While a lot of teams use yellow/gold as an accent (with black, blue, etc), I can't think of many that use it as their dominant color. Either there aren't many bright yellow shirts around, or I'm just ignorant, which is always a possibility.

I can't think of any teams that use teal. Though once you start getting into colors that can't be found in an 8-pack of Crayola crayons, the colors become a lot more unique.

I think 1519 and 744 come pretty close to teal. They use a light blue, at any rate.

Re: Team Colors

Realize that if you're going for easy recognition, it's not just about color but about style. (meaning primarily design, though it never hurts to have style ;))

Yes, there are dozens and dozens of teams with black t-shirts, or blue t-shirts, or yellow t-shirts, or purple t-shirts, etc--but they're all t-shirts. That's not to say you can't be distinctive in t-shirts: big logos, metallic/shininess (<3 MOE), though especially with distinctive colors can definitely set you apart. No ones confusing MOE or Thunderchickens with anyone else, or even each other! Though 365 especially is green from their bow ties to their wire ties.

Still, if you're looking for another trick, add something to the ensemble. The FIRST world is overflowing with black/white/red teams and red/orange teams, but most don't push it to flame or cameo pants (though some do; then life gets really confusing, <3 1511). Or rock out the ties, hats, socks, what-have-you--as long as it's safe.

Avoiding monochrome is also an effective way to get spotted. It's hard to lose track of MORT's epaulets, Bacon's sleeves (the colored sleeves), WildStang's...WildStang, Daisy's trim checkers (even understated, at least compared to WildStang), or 25's shirts (well, at least in New Jersey), to name a few.

In short, don't just hunt for the color, hunt for the style. If you can stand 100-200 feet away from someone and still see the contrasting elements (both within their uniform and from the backdrop), you've got a good start.

Siri's right, it's not so much the color as the design and pattern that makes your team distinct. Look at Wildstang, or the teams that have stripes.

Although, the right color can make you stand out:

Re: Team Colors

Rainbow pattern. There's a way to stand out....

Or at least rainbow accents - Mork from Ork suspenders. No one will get that reference.

Re: Team Colors

I'm gonna hop on to the 'go pattern' bandwagon here.

1923, as an example, changed our colors when we invited all the schools in the district (didn't want to favor one by using its colors). So, we're black, white, and silver.

What do we do with black/white/silver to stand out? Zebra print. Or really, anything black and white patterned. It allows kids to wear what they want, as long as they wear the shirt, they can add their own fun 'flair' to it... and we still stand out.

You bring up a good point with that! Many teams may share the same colors, but the teams who incorporate it into more places such as powdercoating the robot are the ones who are really recognized as the owners of those colors.

I think even if you pick a common combo of colors the important thing to make yourself recognizable is to incorporate it into as many places as you can.

bright pink and bright blue. Our guy mentors love us. Can you tell?

our school colors (brown and gold) weren't going to cut it.

Usually pink/blue lighting makes it onto the robot, and people know us well for pink/blue, unicorns, and all girls. We had black tshirts this year without unicorns on them (opposed to our long streak of bright blue), and we got tons of questions about mascot/color changes. We're pretty recognizable at our regionals now I guess!
Occasionally we've had pink toolbelts and other things to add to the team image.

FIRST called it Nationals right up until 2003 (or was it 2004?). Since then, they've at least tried to call it the World Championship...

As far as someone who wasn't around then mixing it up, it's rather simple. They were just around the shop with someone who was for far too long. (Or with someone who did that... Expand the chain as far as needed.)

I didnt mean to hurt any feelings. I feel bad about mixing it up- I'm really aware it's international. I mean we were next door neighbors with the Brazilian trailblazers (my Facebook news feed now has portuguese posts), and the Canadians always beast at the buckeye regional. I should be getting it right by now... I think the reason I mixed up is because I talk about it like the other sports teams at school talk about their competitions. Not many other teams get to compete with such a big and diverse group. :)

As far as the thread goes: My favorite team color scheme is definitely 3504 for their Rosie the riveter outfits. Flannel shirts and polka dotted bandanas all the way.

Huh? Nah, you have to try much harder to hurt my feelings. That's actually the most logical explanation I've ever heard for why calling it Nationals. Thanks.

177, 190, 987 primary team color is maroon/burgandy... and since 987's school colors are maroon and grey we actually honor the grey by wearing grey on practice day then switch to maroon for next two days. Does anyone else out there switch colors?

TechnoKats colors are red and blue. We typically have different shirts for different days, some blue and some red, and occasionally grey for practice days.

Our Saturday competition "uniform" often used to be a blue polo shirt. For the past couple of years we've worn a medium blue button-down shirt. I think it makes a good impression at community events.

Every year.
Since our founding in 2010 we have had two black shirts (one off-season), one grey, and one yellow. Our T-Shirt designers find it fun to change up the color every year. No one really minds, but my favorite color is the black and gold ones from the 2010 season.

Robot theme is important too. Over time, we've built a "black with white accent" style, making use of smoked lexan and white vinyl decals. I feel like our robots are very easy to spot on the field.

Sorry about not pointing you guys out. I was thinking "...except 987..." while writing that. I figured just about every color under the sun was in FRC, so I was trying to think of some less-common ones, understanding that somebody probably uses them.

We do a very weird system. On Thursdays, we wear a shirt based on our robot's theme for the season. For instance, this year our bot was Endeavour, so we wore a yellow shirt with a red shuttle and Endeavour in red Transformers font underneath and all our sponsors in red on the back. (Some past years: last year was dark gray with a white dragon and Magic in white Aniron font; 2010 was a white shirt with red dynamite sticks; 2009 was deep red with a black ringed planet and the name Revolution in gold.) Fridays are our signature black shirts with the NASA style logo on the front and our team meatball on the back. Saturdays we wear a polo (before 2011, the meatball was embroidered on the left breast, 2011 to present we use the NASA style logo instead) which we haven't settled the style on with khakis.

Robot theme and pit theme really help tie everything together. Our white frame, gold innards, single red part, and black/gold pit helps us drive home our NASA imagery. Spectrum 3847 and LASA both integarte purple into their bots and pits, but do so in different ways that nicely coordinate. Wildstang's and MOE's clean pits with color panel accents look nice and match their robots every year. Fondly Fire....well, you can't go wrong with flames everywhere.

Another good way to go is headgear. Fondly Fire again has these wild flaming baseball hats. CRyptonite is actually sponsored by got2be, and use those products to spoke their hair to high heaven. We have a combination of blue hair and embroidered baseball hats. I've seen teams with top hats, teams with mohawks, teams with attached glowing bits and teams that wear pom poms.

At SPAM we wear our black "fun" shirts for Thursday's practice rounds. If you've ever traded shirts with a SPAMmer, you've gotten one of these.

On Friday and Saturday, we switch to our traditional blue sponsor shirts. I think we're the only team from the original UTC block to still sport the old UTC-style blue shirts. These shirts are not allowed to be traded, so anyone with one is or was part of the SPAM family.

I'll admit to the fact that that when we were working on out branding 118 was a large part our inspiration. We were rookies in 2006 and our first FIRST regional was Lone Star. One our of head mentors (who, actually is NASA employee / my mother) loved y'all's polos, baseball caps, etc. and pushed for us to get some. (years later when we started branding, we did). We now do something vaguely similar with the different shirts for different days, game shirts based on that years game and standard logo shirts. That idea was also inspired by 118..

Re: Team Colors

We don't change shirts to match the robot or game, but we do wear different shirts each day of competition. Thursday we have the previous year's main T-shirt (orange), Friday is the current primary T-shirt (orange), and Saturday we have our Mechanic Shirts, which are blue, short-sleeve, have two pockets, and are button-down and collared. We also match our team flag to the shirts, giving the MC our orange flag on Thursday and Friday and the blue one on Saturday.

Some more info on the shirts:
The orange shirts have our Superman logo on the left breast, "68" on the right sleeve, and our big logo (The team name and truck overlaid on a Michigan outline) centered on the back, with the FIRST logo in the upper right, sponsors on the left, and our website and schools below it.

The Mechanic Shirt has one's name embroidered on the right breast, having the first name--and last initial, if needed--(students) or first initial and last name (mentors), and the team name, school names, and FIRST logo on the left breast, with "68" on the left sleeve and a blank back.

We also have a blue T-shirt, pullover sweatshirt, and zip-up sweatshirt, which are color-inverted versions of the orange T-shirt. While not officially in the team uniform, it's nice to have some team apparel to wear whenever and keep the "official" shirts clean. A lot of people wore the blue T-shirt on Wednesday in St. Louis. There was some talk (although I don't know how serious it was) of enlarging the Superman logo to cover the entire front of the blue T-shirt (i.e. S.P.A.M.) in the future.

TL;DR Version: So you're not quite alone in having multiple shirts for each day at a competition.

P.S.: On the subject of year-specific shirts, 3098's Jordan-inspired "Air Captains" shirts are cool.

We used to wear yellow shirt on Thursday that were essentially the negative of our normal maroon shirts. We stopped getting the second shirt around 2006 and changed over to "Throwback Thursday" where we wear old tee-shirst from a different game, some times I wear some of the shirts I have that pre-date static team numbering to confuse people.:D

We wear dark blue Polo's on Thursday's and then would wear our "Classic" Orange Jersey's on Friday and Saturday.

I believe 1114 wears black on thursday's and red on friday and saturday. But dont take my word for it.

Our team has students primarily from 2 HS that are maroon/gold, and green/white. So as to not play favorites, we use the colors of the international hurricane symbol, red and black.

I feel like yellow, red, or green are the most common colors that teams use.

Our team uses Yellow and Black (Following the colors of the two high schools, Gold and Brown and Blue and Gold). We wear Yellow T-Shirts for the first day of competition, Black T-Shirts and black pants for the second, then our Black Bowling shirts and black pants for the final day of competition. We make special shirts for the Alamo regional and the FIRST World Championship if we go to either of those.

Re: Team Colors

Dark Maroon is one of the least used colors, and I think that needs to change. Love that color with white outlines.

Blue is the most used, then Red, then Green. Yellow I would say is actually very common, as a secondary color to black, green and/or purple. Purple is about as common as green, and Pink is gaining a lot of momentum. Orange isn't common as a full team color, only when paired with another color like Blue. I bet there are very few teams who give themselves White as their main team color. Silver is another color gaining momenum, and brown isn't used often as it's a strange color to use.

Also, is there a team with the colors CMYK? I don't think so, but that would make an interesting team design and identity.

Test Team 303 sort of does, to me at least. They actually adopted a test pattern from TV (vertical stripes with the bottom horizonals), so it has a bunch of colors, but on remembrance I think it gives the sort of CMYK "mood". Or maybe I'm just weird.

For rookie teams trying to brand themselves with standout or less-used colors in their region, one thing I can recommend is looking through wide lens photos of your regionals and/or champs. For instance, John Vrany posted a bunch of Worlds photos this year: for instance, example. Mostly from the catwalk, so you can't really identify teams, but browsing can give you an idea of uncommon and standout colors.

Just so you know, K is not a color, it a variable used to describe the percentage of black in any C,M,Y combination. CMY could work (but isn't particularly aesthetically attractive).

Team 116 used to have three different color shirts, one for each day of competition. Red and black (school colors) were staples, with the third usually being grey or white (aside of 2002 it was black with "fire" on the shoulders). Sometime (2005?) they switched to black on all three days to get a better identity (though Saturdays they wear a polo instead of a t-shirt).

Team 1712 used to wear both black and maroon shirts (same design), until this past year where we switched to maroon all three days.

None of them are colors, they're all pigments because C+M+Y is black, not white.

1519, 744, I'm sure I'm missing a few (1726 has bordered on light blue, but that's partly because it's usually surrounded by white). However, most teams that go for a blue tend to go to a darker blue, like royal blue. (OTOH, very few go for a navy blue.)

That's awesome. On a day I was bored, I designed an imaginary team profile going with the colors Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black - however using them together every time. I called it Team Neon. It looked a little like Bit.Trip Beat, which is an awesome aesthetic to begin with anyway.

But using the entire TV test pattern? That's brilliant! (And so are the colors.)
