As an RPI student, I'm quite disappointed with the recent infection of Clarkson onto our team. :P One of 2791's alumni goes to Clarkson and our current drive coach is himself a Clarkson alum, so they outnumber me... Maybe I should transfer.

Will there be mentor matches at this year's Ruckus? I wanna play again!

Me and Alex are bouncing around ideas for a fun game to play during the event but perhaps we could make way for a little mentor match action too. We'll ask the committee next meeting.

One of the guiding goals of Ruckus is providing a safe and comfortable event while retaining exciting and fun competition. Our intent is to provide normal size 10x10 pits with that in mind. We cannot promise this for certain quite yet but it is certainly one of our high priority goals.
Also for those who have attended in recent years and found seating tight you will be happy to know the new venue will comfortably seat approximately 1400 people the way we have it currently configured.

If I'm driving in mentor rounds, I'm playing lots of defense.

...mainly because I'm doubting any copilot candidates can score. Defense and balancing, for the win!

Yes, I hear RIT could use a few more FIRST alumni! (And we're mere minutes from the ruckus venue... and host a regional... ;) )

Ahh, but does RIT have a 40-student dormitory for FIRST alumni?
(that we get so many applicants to we actually have to turn people away...)
And work with three FIRST programs (FLL, FTC, FRC, plus additional competitive robotics programs in other countries)?
And give tons of scholarships?
And have a SWEET VAN?

Nope, that's all Clarkson.
:)

(Disclaimer: I'm only jesting. Yes, I love Clarkson, but that's because I go there. I'm sure any school anyone might personally decide on will be great- I just love how big a part FIRST plays in the Clarkson culture. :) )

No, No, No, No, and No... BUT, we have a lazy river in our Field House... and lots of other cool stuff... I'm in the process of trying to make FIRST a bit bigger in the RIT community, but don't currently have very much to show for it. Oh well. Soon I hope!

Steve, I'm glad to hear you're considering both schools!

RIT has some amazing programs, clubs/organizations, and overall opportunities.

Don't let either of our opinions sway you either way. Choose the school that you like best, even if it's neither of them. Take tours of all of them, do research online, ask current students what their opinions are(yes, I know I'm contradicting myself there... but we both obviously love our schools so it's ok), and definitely make sure to talk to the departments that house your anticipated major. Talk to the advisor(s) if you can and get a feel for how that college/major will help you in your future career goals, and in your life as a whole.

And on top of all else, stay involved with what you love! Obviously I'm talking about FIRST, but it applies to everything else in life as well.

Soon to come the decisions.

I'm game with that but only if IRI picking rules are in place and AC's are free to use backups however they like - no forced usage.

I was just wondering for backups so none of the teams feel left out :]
Travis do you mean full IRI rules including the no co-op?

I don't know if the ruckus teams are going to be able to triple like a lot of teams at IRI did.

I think only 3 teams have balancing aids 610,48,340.
But only 610 used it in competition if im not mistaken.

340 used the stinger a few times at IRI. It worked as it was supposed to, quick and flawlessly. I'm all for the IRI rules. We were king of the co-op though.

I havent watched all the IRI footage yet im saving that for the drive for when im going on vacation.

Did 48 use their stinger at IRI Travis?

I am marginally opposed to no co-op bridge. I am very much against applying any form of IRI qualifying triple balance rules out of principle, but if most everyone makes the elimination rounds, any resultant blar randomly doled out due to the rule would be mitigated.

If I had a say, I'd want to see stock Rebound Rumble. Many robots are tired and plenty of drive teams are going to be new and/or rusty. I really don't look forward to random combinations of that reality attempting to triple in quals. Six year olds playing soccer comes to mind, as does the "agony of defeat" ski jumper.

Also, as many of the students we would be bringing would be brand new, I'd like to show them a game with the original FRC-intent elements in place, and that includes the coopertition element. You can be certain it will be a part of future FRC games - get them used to the concept now.

Didn't need to in the match we tripled with 469 and 4334. Barely had to overhang. Didn't/couldn't attempt any triples in other matches.

We're not sure how much additional functionality we'll have at the Ruckus -- we have no shop for the summer due to the capital project (they literally knocked down the tech rooms and are rebuilding from scratch), and may not have a shop before the Ruckus at all!

So hopefully we'll have a re-vamped shooter and a stinger, but we might not...

2168 Also has had a functioning stinger/peg leg since the CT regional, and we are looking forward to making the trip up north. I haven't been to Ruckus since 2009 when I was a mentor for 229.

I'll do my best to convince the team to costume up for it.

I like what I see.

Also, I would say that the top four seeds can't pick each other is a good rule to continue for a small event, and 1-8-1-8 alliance selections work in that scenario. But maybe all of those rules PLUS IRI rules might be too much.

One last question, when is the last day to sign up for Ruckus? I'm gonna make one more plee to 174 and giving them a final day might help planning and their decision.

Garrick sums up the rules situation quite well. To reiterate, major changes outside alliance pairings and tournament play format are pretty much finalized.

Comments on the alliance selection process are being read and of course being considered. As those who have come in the past to Ruckus know, we strive above all to make this an event that is fun for all attending teams (while still balancing that with the competitive nature of the game!).
One of the committee members will be sure to post here (as well as sending email to registered team contacts) once we finalize alliance selection (please note too that it is a distinct possibility that this will just be "no change" to the process from the FIRST rules).

The situation this year is quite a bit different than years past considering the growth in the number of teams that will be competing.

Registration for teams does not typically close until about a week or two before the event. However, we're carefully watching registrations to make sure we don't outgrow the venue or have to resort to uncomfortable squishing of team pits. So for teams out there considering coming please do consider registering sooner rather than later :)

Note that payment is not due/expected until the actual day of the event so please do not let that alone delay your team.

Please note: Volunteer registration will likely close much earlier than the timeline given above for team registration - if you want to volunteer please register as soon as you can!! We appreciate the assistance of all our volunteers!

I don't have a certain answer for this at this time, however I would not plan on having this available. We'd love to be able to provide this, but we may not have the resources to do so.

Teams setting up their own access points will not be allowed; pit operation of robots will be "tether" only as traditional at FIRST events. This is quite simply to preserve the reliability of field operation.

A) Right now we have space laid out for 32 teams. We may be able to squeeze a few more in. Honestly, I don't think we anticipated having 30 teams already signed up in August.

Before last year we never had 24 teams (and the only reason we got to 24 was because 340 brought two robots). This is a HUGE step up for this event.

This will be an awesome ruckus.

Thanks to the ruckus committee for hosting an awesome event!!

Can we do something like human basket ball at the end of the ruckus, or like a game of knockout or something?

Re: 2012 Rah Cha Cha Ruckus

My concern now is how will this influence the number of matches each team plays.

We're now slightly larger than the Waterloo regional (which had 30 teams). Waterloo played 44 matches on Day 1, which I believe was about 9 matches a team. Not bad. Except Waterloo played qualification matches on Day 1 from 9:30 to 4:44 PM. Take out the hour and a half for lunch, So that's about 5.5 hours of qualification matches. And, Waterloo, being a two day event, didn't play eliminations until Day 2. Being a one day event, Ruckus runs qualification matches and elimination matches the same day.

Going off of last year's schedule, qualification matches are played for about 4 hours (8:30 - 11:30, 1 - 2). If 4 hours of Waterloo gameplay, about 30 matches were played. Between 6-7 matches per team. Given that we're already larger than Waterloo, and are still potentially growing, we're probably looking at 6.

I, personally, think this is a bit low. But, I really just put this up to give people a speculative guesstimate. Truth be told, I'll gladly take a shorter match schedule for the now expanded team list :) I love all the great teams coming to Ruckus!

DISCLAIMER: THIS IS ALL SPECULATION. IN NO WAY DOES THIS GUARANTEE WHAT WILL HAPPEN AT RUCKUS. THIS IS JUST SOMETHING I'VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT AND WANTED TO LOOK AT.

Here is the answer to your question and concern: Ruckus is a one day off-season event, that is the least expensive of these events and a (typically speaking) local event for most all teams. The purpose is to have some fun with last year's game, train the new recruits to your team and win a few awards with a smaller field than was in FLR, earning you some recognition for your robot and team you otherwise might not have gotten. It's a time for teams to meet and mingle and talk about their design of last year's robot, as well as build little friendships that continue on at FLR. Winners are obviously going to be happy, either award winners or ruckus winners, but guaranteed that everyone will go home happy because NOTHING was truly on the line, other than fame that will last a few weeks and your own experiences which will last for a long time.

If even all teams get is 6 matches - fine by me. Great opportunity for difficult and gutsy scouting practice. Plus it's pretty obvious that no alliance is going to miss out on a great team, as generally speaking, all the teams signed up are pretty competitive.

My hope is 32 teams is a cut off, and every alliance picks their backup, therefore no team is left behind, and the last alliance picked gets an award a-la the NHL all star game draft.

Plus, we are talking about teams that we've been looking over for the past handful of months - No one is going to not pick team 0000 just because team 0000 went 3-3-0 in RCCR, even though they went 6-3-0 in FLR and would go 6-3-0 in RCCR if given enough matches.

It's not going to be a problem.

I, personally, am not worried about the number of matches. If it were a purely local event, anyways. What I'm worried about is those traveling quite a distance for the event. This year, we have a large number of out-of-state teams traveling to our humble event. If a team is traveling such a distance, I'd want them to get their money's worth (even if the money is less than most other offseason events), and make the travel worth while.

Six matches in one morning is a pretty reasonable number for a single day off season. I'd always be in favor of anything that gets us more matches, but six isn't the end of the world.

Because these teams came from a pretty good distance it is also important to leave them a reasonable getaway time. They do not want to be here til 9pm after a long day of roboting. That are very tired and grumpy by then abd could be prone to not ever coming back.

Typically, each team gets around 7 matches. Typically, we have not had 24 teams compete. Rebound Rumble allows for faster turnaround times, but we also have a larger number of teams. The committee will keep in mind the concerns mentioned, and we will do our best to create the most enjoyable experience we can! It will still be a great Ruckus, and I am very excited!

Don't let our travel distance and border wait worry you. We're really looking forward to the competition. A low number of matches isn't a big deal.

This is true, in our case. We expect a late arrival home, but we have our limits.

I don't find a smaller number of matches to be a huge deal, such that I'd still prefer to see some form of mentor round instead of using the time for more matches.

Re: 2012 Rah Cha Cha Ruckus

Hey all,

If there are other thoughts regarding # of matches we'd love to hear them. One of the big comments we've received in the past is that more matches means tighter match-to-match plays (team X has to play again in Y minutes and we don't have the time to check-out/fix the robot/catch our breath). With the increased number of teams this will be less of an issue.

But yeah we'd love to hear thoughts on # matches (or, time dedicated to match play) versus things like:

- Extra "fun" events like mentor matches
- Time the day starts/ends (we won't change this for this year since it is already published, but curious for years to come)
- Match-to-match time (how "rushed" things need to be, maybe gauging versus your experience on a qualification day at a regional - do you want it to move at that pace? faster? slower?)

As always we can't of course incorporate all suggestions but I'm interested in what you think!

Ruckus has always been about not just the matches, but all the fun crazy stuff that happens along with it.

If we manage to get 6 matches each, then that would be plenty. I would be disappointed to see things like mentor tournaments, Pie In The Eye and other Ruckus shenanigans go to the wayside in interest of more matches.

That's just me though.

Second what Nick said...more matches are not as important as the overall experience.

Last year was my first Ruckus, and I had so much fun with 48, I'm bringing another team to join in the festivities! Besides, I still need that chance to smash a pie in Travis's face! :D

Re: 2012 Rah Cha Cha Ruckus

- Extra "fun" events like mentor matches

Ruckus is very much a "dress-rehearsal" for our new student leadership. We may be more of the exception, as opposed to the norm, but last year our team was very focused on performing well at Ruckus. We were preparing to break an 11 year drought where we went without a win at any kind of event. The fun events weren't on our radar very much, but this year will likely be different. Rumour has it there is a mentor or two that might be interested in piloting the EdgeWalker...

- Time the day starts/ends (we won't change this for this year since it is already published, but curious for years to come)

We are arriving Friday night, and so the early start is great for us. The end time is a factor since we drive home the same night. I don't think we could push it too much later than it is - we also factor in time for a meal on the way home.

- Match-to-match time (how "rushed" things need to be, maybe gauging versus your experience on a qualification day at a regional - do you want it to move at that pace? faster? slower?)

I think it'd be great to run the field as fast as it will go, and let the chips fall where they please. I don't think there is a need to artificially try and slow down the competition to spread out matches. If I needed to miss one match to fix the robot at an off-season event, I wouldn't panic too much. Especially if there were more matches to be played as a result of the quicker pace.

There are no further rule changes to the game other than what has been posted on the website, and the Alliance Selection process will be the same as the standard FIRST procedure (24 teams will play in the eliminations rounds).

We will have real-time scoring, but penalties will be added after the match has ended. To keep a faster turn-around time, penalties will not be discussed after the match.

For our fun events, Punkin’ Chunkin will return, and we are still hoping to keep Mentor Matches! As usual, you will also have the opportunity to pie you favorite FIRSTer in the face during the annual “Pie-in-the-Eye.” During the event, we are also holding a Mega Drive (specifics to come later)!

It should be a great time for all!

As always, check out the Ruckus Facebook and Website. Volunteer Registration is still open!

Who do I talk to to sign up for Pie-in-the-Eye? I doubt I'll pull in as many tickets as last year (since basically all of 1126 pooled to try and pie me), but it was still fun and I'd love to do it again!

I've got a suggestion to raise additional funding for Pie in the Eye.

If a recipient of the pie-ing is willing (I am), I was wondering if the Ruckus staff could give people two parallel pathways to pie retribution against that person:

1. The usual way - sell tickets to be put in a bucket. One is drawn randomly and that person gets to pie the recipient.

2. The IRI way - have a silent auction which gives people full control over whether they win a chance to pie or not - lay out a bidding sheet where people openly bid for the right to pie someone.

Both pies could be applied to the recipient simultaneously to avoid spending much extra time per pie recipient.

I believe this was discussed earlier in the thread, but it is looking like 6 matches per team. This isn't an absolute, but it is the number we projected if we want to keep the fun events part of Ruckus and still finish at a reasonable time (there is a lot to cram into a 1-day event).

Unfortunately, due to budget issues and student participation issues, 3193 has withdrawn from the Ruckus. We hope to compete next season when our finances are better, but we just can't do it this season.

I will still be attending with Team 48, and I hope to bring along a few Falco Tech rookie students so they can get their first taste of a great FIRST competition experience.

907 will have a few vetrans and most of our rookies there to get a taste of what competition is like.

We are getting closer and closer to an awesome Ruckus! Check out this cool intro video with all of the teams that will be competing!

So, if you are attending, what are you most excited for? The great teams, the chance to pie your favorite FIRSTer in the face, the Halloween Party? There will definitely be a lot going on this year!

Phew!

We came close to having to call this one off due to various difficulties, but with a lot of help, we are gonna make it there. Profuse thanks to all those giving us a hand!

10 days until the Swan Song.

HA, one of these days 174 will have a full team photo. That made me laugh.

I would just like to put out a reminder that 1551 currently does not have a functional bridge -- I know that several teams said they have extras and would bring them so that we can compete not on a tether, and I just wanted to be sure we're all on the same page!

Thanks!

Ruckus is only a few days away!! Remember, your team can win a bunch of cool prizes in this year's Mega Drive. It is a bigger and better version of our annual charity drive, and more information can be found on our website! Last year, team 48 took home the trophy. Who will make the largest contribution this year?

I'd say 37 teams are excited, to begin with.

Anyone in town tonight for the Ruckus might want to check out the ROC City Roller Girls zombie walk -- starts at 9pm at JAVA, ends at the Little Theater, where they'll be showing a Wes Craven double feature!

All of us teams have some work to do when it comes to making our alliance selections...I can tell you that right now...

Webcast got cut out during finals match

Who won? and what were the scores?

Any videos???

Re: 2012 Rah Cha Cha Ruckus

The winning alliance was 340, 48 and 378. Ruckus finalists after 2 very close, hard fought and intense matches were 610, 1559 (once again united at Ruckus) and 2168. The elimination matches were great!
