NASA Grant for 2013 FRC?

Does anybody know if NASA is offering their grants again for 2013? I looked on their website ::rtm:: but have not been able to find anything.

Re: NASA Grant for 2013 FRC?

If I remember correctly they usually don't release the upcoming year's grant information until September/October.

They usually post the infomation somewhere on this website, http://robotics.nasa.gov/

Although this paper is from 2009, it still contains lots of great info.

According to https://robotics.nasa.gov/ the 2012 NASA Sponsorship Application will be available to teams between October 3rd and 23rd. Start lining up your info now!

Re: NASA Grant for 2013 FRC?

Just wondering, what is the most a team can get from the NASA grant as part of the sponsorship? I was only wondering because our team has a potential of losing one of our big sponsors this year (Booz Allen Hamilton) so we are looking for other ways to get funding to register for the competition. Thanks so much!

If anyone is out there listening, it sure would be appreciated if teams could know which regional events, if any, will be supported by veteran "Regional Challenge" grants this year, prior to initial event registration in late September.

I'll second that. We have a new event in the area and will be more likely to attend it (and skip Seattle entirely) if there's grant money available.

The schedule up in this neck of the woods + the new Championship wild card system = boo.

Re: NASA Grant for 2013 FRC?

Grant information is up (http://frc-grants.arc.nasa.gov/rcs/directions.php), but with this:

Quote:

For the competition season, Regional Challenge Grants will be available for the following events:

To Be Determined up to 20 sponsorships
North Carolina (Raleigh, NC) up to 10 sponsorships
Utah (West Valley City, UT) up to 10 sponsorships
South Florida (Boca Raton, FL) up to 20 sponsorships
Aren't those last year's new regionals? What about this year's?

Re: NASA Grant for 2013 FRC?

Certainly something wierd.
By the letter of the rules, no veteran Regional Challenge Grants would be awarded.
If this is true the text for it probably should have been removed, so it's probably there for the TBD event.

Only South Florida was a rookie last year. NC and Utah were both rookie events three years ago, but they could dwell on the list if rookies keep getting Challenge Grants I suppose.

By definition, 2nd-year teams for Regional Challenge Grants must go to what is at least a second year event, so South Florida should be expected to again appear on the 2013 list for the 2nd-year applicants. It's also possible that subsequent rookie grant awards to 2nd+ year NASA sponsored Regionals would keep NC and Utah on the list for multiple years.

North Carolina has been part of the RC program since its inception in 2010, I believe.

Utah is a multi-time recipient of the assistance too, I believe.

I'd love to know soon what the TBD regional is. I'm guessing not Crossroads. :-)

It sure would be nice to know. Writing a NASA grant is no easy task, and before we invest the time & energy, we as applicants need to know the limitations of the grant.

Right now we're looking at BMR + SMR, but if Crossroads is a TBD, we'd likely switch to BMR/QCR + Crossroads. As a BMR-waitlisted team, that's a duck I'd like to have in a row.

I think the powers-that-be are out for a bike ride right now, and I certainly don't begrudge them that. :)

"To be determined" sounds like a nice place.

Re: NASA Grant for 2013 FRC?

Remember the deadline: "Firday, November 23, 2012, 18:00:00 PST"

Mark, I believe last year grants were available for NCR and the DC Regional, which were entering their 3rd year if I remember correctly. I think the correlation is something like "newest regional to existing NASA facility" but that's just a somewhat educated guess.

I wish they had clearer information for teams who may be hesitant to fulfill their grant application because of the TBD event and a few confusing stipulations.

That is the deadline for the supplemental documentation from your accrediated educational sponsor (principal, assistant Principal, etc.)

The deadline for submitting the Application is:

October 23, 2012, 18:00:00 PST

Re: NASA Grant for 2013 FRC?

We were told recently that teams are not eligible to receive both the NASA grant and a grant from Boeing. I can not recall if this has been true in the past.

Did anyone else near a Boeing facility outside of Washington hear the same?

Our registration choice was influenced somewhat by an expectation that regional challenge grants would be available for the new Central Washington regional, but if we're only eligible for one grant or the other, well -- :/

Re: NASA Grant for 2013 FRC?

I also just got a response back from NASA regarding the TBD regional. Basically they said to keep checking their website for updates.

Re: NASA Grant for 2013 FRC?

I'd personally like to see more events sponsored over a wider geographical range, with fewer sponsorships per event, but again, who knows what constraints guide these Regional Challenge allotments?

In the past, you have not been able to receive both a NASA grant AND a Boeing grant. I don't think that has changed this year.

Re: NASA Grant for 2013 FRC?

The "TBD" regional for the Regional Challenge grant has now been removed from the application pages. Looks like it's just NC, Utah, and South Florida.

I can confirm that this has been the case ever since the Boeing grants have started. The objective is to cover the entry fee of as many teams as possible, so Boeing waits to see which teams receive the entry fee NASA grants first before awarding any of their grants.

Can you please tell me where I can find the Boeing Grant Information. Our team recently lost our main coorporate sponsor which was 70% of our operating budget. We were told that they are allocating their charitable funds at the coorportae level. We are scrammbling to keep the team affloat. We have submitted grants to NASA, PTC and BAE. If anyone has the Boeing information can you please forward itto me.

The majority of the grants Boeing distributes requires that a Boeing mentor be involved with the team. The Boeing mentor is responsible for applying for the grant (Due October 22nd of this year.)

There are some grants given to underserved / under-resourced schools with teams, I would try contacting FIRST for more information on those as I don't think Boeing specifies those schools.

Re: NASA Grant for 2013 FRC?

Our team now plans to attend the Utah regional if we get the NASA grant.
What we didnt realize is that the regional grant does not cover all the new regionals for this season. With scheduling, Utah is our only option should we receive it, I hope.

Ditto, Glenn. Hope NASA can help both our teams join the fun in Utah:D And maybe for a change the elimination planets finally align in such a way we join forces...

Both of us getting the NASA grant is definitely a step in that right direction.
