2012-2013 MAR District Event Schedule

For those of you who haven't seen it yet, here is the mostly-complete schedule of the MAR District Events for the 2012-2013 season:

A few changes from last year, but there are still 6 districts and 1 regional championship, which is again week 7. However, the Outreach Committee said that they will work with Steele Meetings to to reserve a block of rooms in St. Louis, as well as reserve charter bus companies to accommodate those teams who do not qualify until last minute at the regional championship. Additionally, they will work with hotels near Lehigh so teams attending the regional championship can receive the best rate possible.

Four of the venues are the same as last year, with three new ones joining. Two of the events are still tentative, and there are no districts week 2 or 5 due to other events, causing there to be two events during both week 3 and week 4.

Week 1: Fri - Sun 3/1 - 3/3 -- Hatsboro-Horsham (Horsham, PA)
Week 2: no event scheduled-- HSPA testing in New Jersey
Week 3: Thr - Sat 3/14 - 3/16-- Springside/Chestnut Hill (Philadelphia, PA)
Week 3: Thr - Sat 3/14 - 3/16 -- The College of New Jersey (Ewing Township, NJ) (tentative)
Week 4: Fri - Sun 3/22 - 3/24 -- Mt. Olive (Flanders, NJ)
Week 4: Fri - Sun 3/22 - 3/24 -- Lenape-Seneca (Tabernacle, NJ)
Week 5: no event scheduled-- Holiday Week (Easter and Passover)
Week 6: Fri - Sun 4/5 - 4/7 -- A High School in Central New Jersey (Middlesex or Somerset Counties) (tentative)
Week 7: Thr - Sat 4/11 - 4/13 -- Mid-Atlantic Robotics Region Championship, Lehigh University (Bethlehem, PA)

So, what events are you planning on attending? We (1676) will most likely return to the Mt. Olive event week 4, and probably go to the TCNJ district week 3 as well, of course attending Lehigh if we qualify.

Can't wait to see you all soon!

The Fri,Sat,Sun event plan rocks. Last year I really liked to be able to go for both days and not miss out on billable hours at work.

I'm up for a trip in the mountains for the finals.

Good job MAR!!

No more regional at the Liacoras Center? why have it all the way in Bethlehem, when Philly is basically the center of MAR geographicaly?

The cost to MAR last year was very high at Temple. More than 2 time what it is at Lehigh and it's not that far from Philly.

The X-Cats are doing what they usually do: FLR and Championship.
As for me my potential schedule is as follows:
WEEK 1: FLR
WEEK 2: Orlando
WEEK 3: Pittsburgh over Montreal
WEEK 4: Boston
WEEK 5: I want to go back to GTR but DC is the same week. If I don't get my Garmin issue squared away I may have to stick to the US so I don't end up traveling to Mississauga and end up in Calgary.
WEEK 6: I want to go back to Midwest but Hawaii and Las Vegas are available too. Hawaii is most likely out because Southwest does not fly there and last time I tried to apply to Las Vegas no one called me back and I switched out foe Queen City. I know Dee will call me back for Midwest!
WEEK 7: MSC.
and obviously championships.

Lehigh will make for a great event, although we will miss having an event in Philly.

What MAR events is everyone planning on going to?

We are considering week 1 at Hatboro and then week 4 at Mt. Olive (Lenape if Mt. Olive fills up), and then hopefully MAR Champs in week 7

Pssssh, Philadelphia regional has been around since 1999. Trenton's only had a regional since 2004. Prior to that the NJ regional was at Rutgers. ;)

Re: 2012-2013 MAR District Event Schedule

I still do not understand why there is not a Week 2 MAR District Event. Ostensibly NJ state HSPA testing is listed as the reason, but this (a) only goes from Tuesday-Thursday of Week 2 (source) and (b) only affects juniors and seniors from NJ. There are still 37 MAR teams (by last years' head count) that are from PA and DE.

Not having an event this week significantly impacts the ability of teams to work among their own set of constraints to come up with the best possible competition season for their students.

scottandme 03-10-2012 12:26

Re: 2012-2013 MAR District Event Schedule

Might be a result of the survey they sent out at the end of last year. They had questions asking if your team would be able/willing to participate in events the week of NJ HSPA and easter. I seem to remember the MAR board mentioning that a large number of teams expressed a desire to avoid those weeks. I don't see the reason for concern either, especially since most events are now Sat/Sun.

I think they used to have Friday serve as the makeup day, but that seems to be no longer the case.

In case anyone is wondering - current registration numbers.

88 teams currently registered (54 NJ, 33 PA, 1 DE)
83 veteran/returning teams
3 true rookies (4454, 4460, 4475)
1 offshoot team (193, adding/splitting from team 11)
1 returning team (1617, last participated in 2010)

16 teams from that participated in 2012 are not registered yet (136,219,423,433,752,896,1367,1370,1791,1881,2554, 3553,4128,4342,4347,4361)

6/10 rookies from 2012 are registered (welcome back 3929,3974,4035,4281,4285,4373)

Looks like there should be some open spots for 3rd events this year. Max capacity is currently listed at 212 slots (32 at Springside, 36 at all others), giving us capacity for 106 teams. Obviously depends on additional rookie teams and the possibility of any of the 16 teams above not returning.

I would be shocked if team 433 did not return. Regardless it is a shame to see such a large list of teams not registered yet, hopefully that will change before kickoff.

Another reason for no Week 2 event could be because of the NYC Regional, and wanting to allow MAR teams to go to that regional, like last year.

Since 433 (Firebirds) is hosting their 3rd annual off-season event, girlPOWER, this weekend, it's a good bet they are returning - probably have been too busy to register.

It's a great event with all-female driveteams, and lots of activities for the local young students.

We're up to 93 teams registered, with only 13 teams from 2012 that have yet to register. We have 5 "true" rookies along with returning team 1617 and offshoot team 193. Max capacity is 106 teams based on the currently listed district capacities.

I put together a spreadsheet with 2013 registration data if anyone is interested.

Hatboro Horsham is going to be amazing. 6 out of the top 10 ranked MAR teams from the 2012 season will first compete here. Here are some quick stats I calculated just to see the caliber of teams attending.

Championship Winners – 1 (25)
Division Winners – 1 (25)
Division Finalists – 1 (341)
State Championship Winners – 3 (100%) (25, 341, 1640)
State Championship Finalists – 1 (33%) (1218)
District Winners – 10 (66%) (25, 341, 341, 365, 816, 1218, 1218, 1640, 2559, 2590)
District Finalists – 4 (26%) (103, 708, 1403, 1403)
Regional Winners – 2 (341, 2590)
Regional Finalists – 1 (1218)

Not to mention three Hall of Fame teams (103, 341, 365), and two 2012district Chairman's award winners (1218, 2590). The HH district certainly shapes up with just about any other regional/district event anywhere, including Michigan.

Lehigh will be a great venue for MAR Championships (and I'm not just saying that because I go to Lehigh). It maybe a little far away from the geographic center of the region, but there is a decent number of starting high tech industries around the area, and if the word got out to them properly, may be interested in checking out what FIRST is all about.

You can now add 222 (District Finalist), 357 (District Finalist and Regional Winner), and 4342 (District Finalist) to the statistics.

It's going to be a (metaphorical, hopefully not literal) blood bath.

Re: 2012-2013 MAR District Event Schedule

Updated the registration chart here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...SRi1GSmNHZ kE

Quick Stats (as of ~4PM):

96 teams registered (7 rookie/offshoot/returning teams)
58 teams from NJ (62 in 2012)
37 teams from PA (35 in 2012)
1 team from DE (2 in 2012)
10 teams from 2012 still missing

59 teams have registered for their 2 district events
37 teams have registered for 1 of their events

96 teams would result in an average of 32 teams per regional. Capacity is currently 106.

Hatboro-Horsham is looking stacked. Should be a great way to start the season.

It's going to be ramp riot but at the beginning of the season. 222 also won the mount olive district, raising the already ridiculous amount of district winners to 73%.

Updated Numbers

Championship Winners – 1 (25)
Division Winners – 1 (25)
Division Finalists – 1 (341)
State Championship Winners – 3 (100%) (25, 341, 1640)
State Championship Finalists – 1 (33%) (1218)
District Winners – 11 (73%) (25, 222, 341, 341, 365, 816, 1218, 1218, 1640, 2559, 2590)
District Finalists – 7 (47%) (103, 222, 357, 708, 1403, 1403, 4342)
Regional Winners – 3 (341, 2590, 357)
Regional Finalists – 1 (1218)

Re: 2012-2013 MAR District Event Schedule

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...SRi1GSmNHZ kE

Update:

Bridgewater is now at capacity. We have 97 teams registered, 79 of which have picked 2 events, and the remaining 18 need to add their second event. 9 teams from 2012 still missing. 58 NJ, 37 PA, 2 DE.

As of 10AM:
BR 36/36
HH 36/36
LEN 22/36
MO 24/36
SCH 27/32
TCNJ 31/36

I took a quick look at the location of teams that haven't registered for their 2nd event, and simulated the registration numbers based on the event closest to them. There were a handful of teams equidistant from the SCH/LEN/TCNJ area, so it's tough to call those.

Guesses (with 97 teams):
BR 36/36
HH 36/36
LEN 27/36
MO 30/36
SCH 30/32
TCNJ 35/36

Could be a bit better distributed, but hopefully there are more teams on the way to help bring everyone up to capacity. I wasn't entirely sure why the 6th event was added, NJ has actually been very slowly losing teams over the last few years, and hasn't shown significant growth since the 2007 > 2008 season (added 6 teams - 10% growth). PA took a big jump from 2011 > 2012, but I didn't look if that growth was primarily in our region or not.

Either way, match turnaround this year is going to be even faster this year as we go from ~40 team events to 32-36 team events.

Lil' Lavery 14-10-2012 22:29

Re: 2012-2013 MAR District Event Schedule

I'm almost sure that the actual capacities for each of these events is 40 teams. Events usually hold a few slots in reserve for late registering rookie teams. It's more pertinent of an issue in the regional format than it is in the district system, but I guess it has held over.

Another district does allow for more teams to attend 3 districts if they so chose. That basically didn't happen in MAR last year, but there are more than a handful of 3 district teams in Michigan.

scottandme 15-10-2012 22:41

Re: 2012-2013 MAR District Event Schedule

There was talk at the MAR meetings about reducing the size of the events slightly, as some were cramped for space in the pits, etc. So I don't know if the 36 number is the new hard limit, or if that's a soft cap like most regionals.

I think only 1 team chose to do a 3rd event last year, but there weren't many slots anyway. Keep in mind MAR is charging $1000 for the 3rd event, where Michigan only charges $500. It doesn't really look that appealing to me. Seeing as about half (or more) of our region can qualify for the MAR championship, you're already 25% of the way to paying the registration cost if you skip the inconsequential 3rd event.

Or to look at it another way, you could register for Brunswick Eruption, Ramp Riot, Duel on the Delaware, Monty Madness, and BR2 and still have some spending money left over.

Sitting at 97 teams right now, we have 18 open slots, or space for an additional 9 teams. I don't know when rookies pop up on average, but 9 more at this point in registration seems ambitious.

Is anyone planning on attending a 3rd event? We're still planning on registering for an out of state event, so our schedule will be full as it is.

Re: 2012-2013 MAR District Event Schedule

Hatboro looks like it will be a great event for a week 1 (more like the old NJ regional I suppose). 2016 will have a presence just without the robot... :)

We couldnt afford to run wk. 1 2 and 3 continuous like last year and with TCNJ being in our backyard in wk 3 and NYC being wk 2 we had to leave off Hatboro.

but looking forward to going to watch at least.

Re: 2012-2013 MAR District Event Schedule

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...SRi1GSmNHZ kE

We added 5 teams in the last 4 days, bringing us up to 102 teams registered. There may be hope to hit 106 to fill all of the events after all.

We're up to 9 rookie teams, and 1 returning team. That offsets the 7 teams yet to register who participated in 2012.

Fodder for the EWCP gender cast - looks like we'll have another 2 all girls teams:

"4637 - Saint Hubert Catholic High School for Girls - Bambie Robotics"
"4575 - Girl Scouts Of Eastern Pennsylvania - The Tin Mints"

and 1 all boys team:

"4653 - Don Bosco Prep - Ironmen Robotics"

14 teams out of the 102 still have to add their 2nd event. Looking at the location of those teams, Springside Chestnut Hill (2 spots left), and TCNJ (1 spot left) are a solid bet to fill. Lenape and Mount Olive will soon be the only events with open space left (~4 slots each after all teams add their 2nd).

scottandme 31-10-2012 14:22

Re: 2012-2013 MAR District Event Schedule

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AqCax1FanfCIdEV5S1ZzVlR6MU9Md1hSRi1GSmNHZ kE

Bridgewater, Hatboro-Horsham, and Springside Chestnut Hill are now full.

TCNJ - 35/36
Lenape - 29/36
Mount Olive - 31/36

We have 103 teams registered, 7 of which still have to add their second district event. That leaves 6 open slots for 3rd event registration (or 3 more rookies).

7 teams missing from the 2012 season
11 new teams (8 rookies, 2 returning, 1 split)

9 teams are registered for a 2nd regional (anybody else on a waitlist?):
New York City: 3314 (1676 on waitlist?)
Virginia: 1403, 714
Washington DC: 2590, 303
Palmetto: 11
Las Vegas: 25
Chesapeake: 365, 87

All the teams that were eligible for World CMP are registered:
103 (CCA/HOF)
341 (CCA/HOF)
365 (CCA/HOF)
25 (Einstein '12)

Of note: Chesapeake is the same week as MAR Championships, which means that 365 and 87 won't be attending. Should be interesting to see if any others in that group decides to pass on MAR CMP this year. 103 skipped last year, and 25 has the option this year.

Regardless, we'll almost certainly have a smaller number of teams at World CMP this year with the almost complete elimination of open pre-registration slots for CMP.

Last year we sent 26 teams:
11 Pre-registered
1 Regional Winner (Could have been 2 - 357 won DC but declined CMP)
3 HOF (341 also qualified via winning Boston & MAR)
2 MAR CMP Winners (341 already qualified)
5 MAR by points
2 MAR Chairman's Award
1 MAR Engineering Inspiration
1 MAR Rookie All Star

This year:
3 HOF
1 Einstein
12 Slots @ MAR CMP
? Outside Regional Winners (9 chances)

Gives us 16 slots, plus any outside regional winners. That number could drop if any of the 4 HOF/Einstein or regional winners end up winning MAR/MAR-CA/MAR-EI, since those spots don't "trickle-down".
