We missed it last year, but now we're back. If everything works out, we will have one regional under our belt before WPI.

So glad to see tons of friends on the event list too! 20, 177, 2168, 3044 among many others.

I see the potential for a 3-falcon alliance!

We are excited about the new pit area at WPI. Is there any other arena that had the FRC in mind when they designed it?

No more 9x9 pits! Snack bar on the competition floor! What could be better?

2168 is coming with our best team yet. Looking forward to seeing everyone!

No hanging points for the red alliance?

According to my sources, the ruling was that two robots hanging from the same wrung is worth zero points.

The Manual has no such rule. If that was indeed the ruling, I would expect a challenge from the red alliance--and probably something coming from FRC HQ if the ruling was upheld.

Challenged by 2791 and call upheld. Wondering if the bots in some way helped each other climb? I still can't see a way that at least 1 would not get 10 points and I'm struggling to find a way it's not 20.

I'm guessing this was in the finals and the no call changed the outcome of the match?

10 hang would have been tie, 20 would have changed the winner.

No, during the finals it looked like at least one Red robot had hung on the first level (possibly a second robot as well, hard to see from the webcast), but the Red alliance wasn't awarded any hanging points. Could just be my mistake, but it looked good to me.

Helping each other climb is ALSO not grounds for negating a climb, by itself.

G33: One robot may only climb on another if one of the two is in contact with the pyramid. (Loose translation: If one robot is in contact with its pyramid, and another uses it to climb, then its A-OK per the rules as long as the sequential and number of levels are OK.)

If there were two robots with 10-point hangs who hung on the same rung, and neither hang was counted, then either neither climbed in sequential order (highly unlikely) or both contacted Level 2 while on the floor.

Edit: I haven't checked the Q&A, or watched the event. But this is really starting to sound like a badly blown call in finals, something that hasn't been seen in 5 years. The last time, FIRST opened slots at Championship for the finalists who lost on a scoring call that the Manual didn't support. We'll see what happens this time.

Did they not even give an explanation? I would hope that in a situation like this they would at least do that so the red alliance would have enough information to argue their case.

We've been discussing that. 2 robots on the same rung not getting points was the explanation, or so I hear. I could call that a number of things, but I'll just call it unsupportable by the Manual.

Ah, sorry. But they didn't cite an official rule? Because if they did someone could look it up and correct them if they've misinterpreted something.

BHS_STopping 09-03-2013 17:16

Re: 2013 WPI Regional

The other possibility is the robots were resting on unseen frisbees, negating the climbs. I suppose we'll wait to see what the teams say once awards are over. But no rules or violations were cited, the scores were shown and that was that.

The most credible theory so far. If the hooks of the climbers touched the corner pole while they were still on the floor...

The refs should have said that was the reason if that was the reason. I hope someone has high-res pictures/video

Now that's a ruling that can actually be backed up. If the paper slid under, though, then there just might be a little bit of a problem...

That might do it then. It's possible the robots were hanging initially and then settled on the ground a little while after the match ended. It didn't look like they checked for robot climbs until a few minutes after the end of the match.

The ruling we got was that 3182 got a frisbee stuck under their robot and 20 was still touching the floor.

Congrats to 2168, 3044, and 3280 on a great win.

Team 3182, Athena's Warriors was on the ground. Team 20, The Rocketeers, only managed to hook one of their grapples, so they were tipped to the ground.
There is no rule about two robots on the same rung. RTDM

Re: 2013 WPI Regional

More importantly, this turned into an outstanding regional event.

Congratulations to the Winning Alliance of 2168, The Aluminum Falcons, 3044, OxBE4, and 3280, The Rhode Rebels. This was a first regional win for each of these teams. They were the sixth seed with 2168 reluctantly pulled into the draft picking role. Their choices of 3280 and 3044 were dark horse steals.
3280 came close last year at FLR, and the Aluminum Falcons had their hearts broken several times last year.

The Finalist Alliance of 2791, Shaker Robotics, 20, The Rocketeers, and 3182, Athena's Warriors acquitted themselves quite well through the eliminations and were gracious in their razor thin defeat. (Shaker did two Regionals in 10 days! Losing to 610 at GSR last week)

The eliminations emphasized the importance of a defensive strategy as we witnessed 2168 defang every powerhouse from 126, Gael Force and the 177, Bobcats, through 558, Robo Squad and 1100 T-Hawks (who's shooter had failed rendering them in the difficult position of choosing a backup robot from a thin field or soldiering on).

2168's driver is one of the best I have ever seen. The Colson wheels helped.:)

Just to recap the final match. The first match went red 100-87, the second, blue 89-64. In the third match 2791, 20 and 3182 went for a strategy where 2791 would just fire from the feeder station, and 20 would pick up the trash from the floor with one of the best floor pickups that I have yet seen. This was a great idea and prevented 2168 from playing their defense as it eliminated cross field traffic. The scoring for blue was consistent from 3280 and 3044 and the match was an even draw as the Rocketeers were making nearly all of their shots in the 3 points goal. 2168 was trying to stop them, but that was a dangerous proposition as 20 always shot in contact with the pyramid.

The fatal flaw was when 3182 chose to hang on the pyramid rung closest to the wall, that was 20s spot, so when 20 tried to hang, they could only engage one of their hooks. They were nearly flawless the whole regional with the 10 point climb and usually shot two or three more from their hang position.

If they had managed the climb, the score would have been tied at 68-68, and the foul tie breaker would have given them the win. (2168 committed the foul trying to disrupt 2791 from shooting)

Oh, for the want of a climb, the regional was lost.

The spirit was high, the cheering intense, the energy recyclable.

Team 1100 won the Chairman's award. Totally deserved. Plus they, along with 2648 Infinite Loop, and 3044, really made this regional pop.

Woody was all smiles.

Oh, for the want of a climb, the regional was lost.

This is a reasonably accurate description of what happened. A few extra details: We switched strategies not just to help avoid defense on both of us, but also because of a mechanical problem we thought we had solved before the Finals... If 2168 hits us hard enough, in just the right position and configuration, our shooter would jam and be out of commission for the rest of the match. We decided to split the difference and go for a feeding strategy until 20 had plenty of ammunition to go around, then go for as many cycles as we could before we jammed.

Unfortunately, we jammed one cycle too early. If we hadn't jammed when 2168 hit us at the pyramid, and we were shooting, that 3 point foul would have become a 20 point technical foul, winning us the regional. Not to mention the extra 12 disc points would have put us on top. If 20 had spun around to the side to hang and gotten lucky with the discs, we would have won the regional. If 3182 didn't hang in front, we would have won the regional. I wouldn't blame anybody for this. It took a series of very unfortunate events, very skilled opponents, and just plain bad luck for this to happen, but it is what it is.

-----

I would like to thank team 20 and 3182 for being great alliance partners. After years of getting assistance, advice, and inspiration from our sports rivals down the road, being able to finally, FINALLY seed #1 and pick them was a dream come true for us. 20 was an absolute pleasure to work with and helped cover for us so much in elims as we chased technical failure after technical failure. 3182 was particularly helpful to us in the semi-finals, slowing down the potent 2648 alliance and setting the occasional pick or two. I just wish we could have gotten you guys gold.

This has been an amazing regional for all of us. I have a lot of stories to tell, that I'm sure I'll post in the next few days when I'm less exhausted... Congratulations to the amazing winning alliance of 2168, 3280, and 3044. It just goes to show you that excellent scouting, clever strategy, and continuous improvement can get you anywhere.

Re: 2013 WPI Regional

Hey guys that was a great regional.

Congrats to 2168 and their alliance- Great to see a CT team winning the finals!
There were a lot of good teams out there. I really liked The Rocketeers robot; they were nailing threes before the Aluminium Falcons started playing hard defense on them in the second match. Another good team out there was Team 1100. They did very in well in the most of their matches. I also want to congratulate them for winning the Chairman's award, really well deserved!

Did anyone see any other good robots or robots that were doing really well? I would love to hear from you guys. There were a lot of great robots. Anyone have a particular favorite? It was a great regional, especially for all of us that weathered the snow to get there.

Great Job Everyone!

Kevin Leonard 09-03-2013 22:51

Re: 2013 WPI Regional

The regional was a blast, even if we came up short of the win by a hair.
Shaker- I wish you guys could go to nationals, you totally deserve it. Your bot was excellent throughout, even when it had some technical issues.
Athena- We've been on the other end- a low seed getting picked unexpectedly by the top seed- and while we narrowly lost the win, you guys were indispensable for slowing down the semifinal alliance, as well as just being a team with a ton of spirit to share.

Congrats to the winning alliance- you guys worked extremely well together, you had it all together, and you made the finals electrifying.

Now I just can't wait to see how some of these robots (especially 177's) change when they go to Hartford! (for those that are going)

Re: 2013 WPI Regional

Chris, I wish it hadn't been us that took away Shaker's victory. Both our teams already had enough of the bad luck. This year it seems we got the good luck.

Your turn.

Rocketeers and Athena's Warriors, also class-acts. We hope to meet with the same bumpers next time.

Thanks to Colleen and the rest of the crew that put on this great event. WPI is our favorite place to play!

Thanks to the Rhode Rebels and OxBE4. I am particularly pleased that all three teams pulled their weight and showed their strengths equally. We couldn't have won if you guys didn't shoot.

Time to faint.

Losing to you guys really lessens the blow. We watched you guys go through heartbreak after heartbreak last year and are really excited you guys finally have a chance to go to Championship. Re: 2013 WPI Regional

Congratulations to teams 2168, 3280, and 3044 for a great regional win! It's a testament to how strong both of our alliances were that the finals were that close and came down to a complicated hanging situation.

Congratulations to 1100 for their Regional Chairman's win! It was fun getting to know some of you this weekend, your team was really great to work with when we had the opportunity and hopefully we will see each other at Championship!

Also, a big thank you to teams 1493, 2370, 2791, 3044, and later in the tournament 1100 for collaborating with us on scouting! Bringing the teams together like that to gather information we otherwise couldn't was extremely valuable and I hope that you all enjoyed it as much as we did!

Shaker, going into the tournament I was already excited about the possibility of working with your team. It was a no-brainer to align with you guys given the opportunity to get the two most consistent scoring machines on the same alliance. If any of a number of things had gone slightly differently, we may be looking back on this differently. Your robots are getting better and better each year, and we came really close to making the hard work pay off with a trip to Championship. Hopefully we'll have the opportunity to work together again in the future. Thank you again for your advice with our drive train this year. It was really helpful to draw upon your experience when we had significant design challenges and it definitely has made a difference in our robot this year! Our drivers love our drive train this year and we'll certainly be looking to iterate this design in the future.

Thank you to 3182 for joining our alliance this weekend, you guys were absolutely essential in our advancement to the finals and we were so close to pulling off the win! We're looking forward to seeing you guys again at the Connecticut Regional in a few weeks!

Despite a rough loss, I'd like to acknowledge that this truly was a great weekend for New York Capital District FRC teams. Among 4 teams that attended the event, we had:
WFFA (Congrats Prof. Ruff!)
1 Regional Winner
2 Regional Finalists
Excellence in Engineering Award
Quality Award
Spirit Award
Safety Award
#1 and #2 ranked teams
All 4 teams participated in eliminations

It's great to have a local community of teams competing so hard on the field, but also working together off the field.

I'm excited to see many of the same teams again in a few weeks in Hartford, and you can be sure Team 20 will be coming out swinging. There are already some potential improvements we plan to explore with the robot and our practice robot will see some good mileage over the next 2.5 weeks.

Thank you to all of the volunteers who made WPI a great regional event! We always enjoy competing there, whether it be for official FRC, Battle Cry, or Savage Soccer, and the volunteers make this all possible.

Thank you to 2168 and 3280 for being our allinace partners, we really coulsn't have done what we did without you guys!!

And good job to 20, 2791, and 3182 you guys were phenomenal throughout the competition.

It was fun haveing 20, 1493, 2791 and us all at the same competition, and even better with all of us in eliminations.

Congrats to team 1100 for chairmans, from the video, you guys really deserve it!!

It was fun cheering for everyone, and being there.

Hope to see all of you next year or at St. Louis!!

Thanks to Dave @ 228 for driving in our first few matches Friday, and to all the teams that helped us through this regional. Between the weather and the robot it was... an experience.

2791, you guys have a beautiful robot. Wish we could have been on the same side of the field again this year.
558, I can't speak for our drive team, but that 6 CIM drive is scary.
1100, It was a pleasure talking with you guys off the field before elims. Congrats on the Chariman's and innovation & control awards.

177, 126, 1884, 558, 2370, 1100, 20, 3182, and 2791 Thanks for some amazingly close matches. It was a pleasure sharing the field with you all.

To our drive team for driving it like they stole it.

And last but not least thanks to our alliance partners 3044 and 3280. You guys really pulled your weight out there. There's no way we could have done it without you putting up the shots.

For those of you who are going to Hartford, I look forward to seeing how we all stack up again after everyone's tweaks are made. Week 5 is gonna be an exciting one to watch.

Re: 2013 WPI Regional

This was such a fantastic regional. It was only 157's 2nd time attending not a BC event at WPI and it was so nice to see so many familiar faces and meet some new ones. We all had a BLAST!

One thing that really stood out for me was that even though the snow hindered some people's efforts to get there, that the kids never hesitated to step up and drive for other teams until their drivers could get there.

Many congratulations to the winning alliance of 2168, 3044 and 3280, and the finalist alliance of 2791, 20, and 3182. :)

Also, congrats to Team 1100 for winning the chairman's award. They worked incredibly hard for it and we're so proud of them.

Re: 2013 WPI Regional

On behalf of Team 3182, Athena's Warriors, let me just say our experience at this regional was indescribable.

We had problem after problem on Thursday and Friday and ended up removing our shooter and most of our pneumatics and electrical systems to debug on Friday. We thought we were done after we didn't have enough time to make desired changes on Friday and Saturday.

It was such an honor to be chosen by Shaker and The Rocketeers. Thank you for the opportunity.

In hindsight I wish we could go back and hang on the other side of that pyramid, but there's no way to fix that now. Getting so far as a team who's only played in quarterfinals once was absolutely incredible. We never imagined that we would have that opportunity. I think our shifters really and drivers' experience really paid off this year.

I'm also incredibly inspired by the gracious professionalism displayed by all the teams involved in the elims. With such a heated competition, it's amazing that everyone is so understanding and calm about the outcome. I love this community so much.:]

I was not able to attend but I was glued to the webcast all weekend watching the local Capital District teams do outstanding this weekend. I loved seeing 2791 and 20 do so well. 2791 I cant think of a team that is more due for a win then you guys. 20 I loved your design it was so similar to what we wanted to go with for our design but decided to try the suction method after we could not get a good roller/sweeper like you had.

3044 you were a great pick and I was impressed as I watch how good your robot kept getting over the weekend. You peaked at the right time and congrats on the banner.

It was great to see Larry Ruff win the WFA award he puts so much time in helping local teams and could not be more modest about all the work he puts in.

Was very proud of 1493 and our season, this is our only regional which is kind of bitter sweet but we made great progress. We examined all the mistakes we have made in the past and feel like we had a performance to be proud of. We are going to try to add a few additions and hopefully do a few off season events.

Teams 155 and 2877 thank you for selecting us to be partners with. From all that I have heard the students had a great time working with you. Best of luck in the future.

I really enjoy this game and love all the possible strategies that can be played, and the variation in bots is so nice to see.

Re: 2013 WPI Regional

A HUGE thanks to Colleen Shaver for running an air-tight regional under some very trying circumstances. It's not everyone who would give her cell number to 42 teams just in case we were having transportation problems, which we ended up having when our robot and all our equipment got stuck sitting in traffic for almost 4 hours while the state police cleared a tractor-trailer roll over. Or who would make sure that the WPI lots and parking garages were available to us when on-street parking in the blizzard was clearly going to be a problem. Again, truly a well-run event, and always a pleasure to attend.

Thanks to our alliance partners, teams 1100 and 2370. We had some bumps in the road, but it was fun playing with you. 1100, we were thrilled when you approached us about teaming up, having watched your impressive play all weekend. And 2370, man did you guys step it up when we needed you to, banging frisbees into that 2 point goal with amazing accuracy.

Congrats to the winning alliance, 2168, 3044 and 3280, and to 1100 for winning Chairman's.

See some of you again in a few weeks in CT!

Thanks so much for the kind words! It was great to see the entire Capital district have so much success this year, especially Larry Ruff's very well deserved Woodie Flowers Finalist Award.

You guys were awesome. The second we locked in #1 and decided on 20, the very first thing we decided is that 1493 would be the absolute perfect pick for us. An under-30 inch robot with a good drivetrain, autonomous, and a ten point hang to boot... We knew you would be long gone by the time our second pick came around, but it would have been so nice to be able to form an all New York alliance.

FIRSTly, contgratz to 2168, 3280, and 3044 on their win. Although I didn't get to see it because our team left after our quarterfinal loss, it was also the last thing I expected.
Also, I would like to say thanks to team 2648 on picking us, as our team didn't expect to make it to eliminations, and to 3930 for some great semifinal matches.
This year was bittersweet, as we didn't win, but we had a great regional. For a team that was rebuilding (2/3 of the members are new), we felt like we did well. We would love to try again in another regional, but that's wasn't the plan for this year (next year maybe!). Hopefully, we can get a place in battlecry!

See yall next year!

Re: 2013 WPI Regional

On behalf of FIRST Team 3623, congratulations to the regional winners; that was a hard fought series - the biggest margin of winning that I've seen that was decided by a single action. Great try by the finalists; again, hard fought, down to the wire series.

To all of the teams that were paired with us on Friday, I am personally extremely disappointed that we were not able to attend on Friday due to the weather keeping several of our key members in their driveways :ahh:. It's an extremely frustrating circumstance, but safety is FIRST.

I look forward to seeing some (if not all) of you at BattleCry, and hopefully next year as well.

In the spirit of more video, here's a video of one of our best qual matches. For those scouting 177: They are normally much better than this, and their climber is actually designed for the corner, not the center as attempted in this video.

I really hope someone recorded the webcast / the entire eliminations. I don't know if I can bring myself to watch Match 3 yet...

I sent our coach a text before that match and told him to pack things up if we did not win that match. When I saw every shot go in during auto it put a big smile on my face. 177's shooter was amazing to watch made a cool sound every shot.

I believe we were planning to upload all of the matches from the event (We were recording them all weekend). Watching finals match 3 is...tough to say the least.

Team 2370 would like to thank it's alliance partners (1100, you guys really gave it all you had) and the Robo Squad was a great team to work with.

And congratulations to all the other teams - this was a pretty challenging year. I remember thinking "How the heck are we going to get Frisbee to into that little goal?!" And by the end, autonomous goals were going in like crazy.

A special thanks to Team 20 for organizing and bringing all the teams together to scout. Not only was it great to get all that data, it was all sorts of gracious professionalism to have team interact, coordinate, and work as one.

Also, thanks to WPI and all the volunteers. We can all tell it's a ton of work to put the competition on, but without it, we'd have nowhere to go.

Again, thanks to all the teams and everyone who had a hand in the WPI regional this year. We had a great time and everyone was courteous and pleasure to work with and compete against.

See you next year!

I had a great time volunteering at the WPI regional on Saturday, and have finally processed and posted my photos from the event.

If you are looking for any additional ones, let me know. Most of my good ones are posted, but I do have some additional ones that I can provide if teams are interested.

As always, please provide photo credit and/or leave my copyright symbol. Thanks!

Thanks, Kim.

As always, the next best thing to being there. Good to see the greatly improved resolution of previously viewed webstreams.
