Hurricane Sandy

To all our friends in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Connecticut - Please stay safe! Our thoughts and prayers are with all those in the path of this major storm!

What Steve said!

My daughter is getting to experience her first hurricane as a student at Drexel in Philadelphia. We don't have too many hurricanes in southern CA where she grew up.

Located in a suburb outside of NYC, our school district has now cancelled school for today and tomorrow.

Thanks for the thoughts and prayers, we extend our deepest concern to everyone in potential danger as well.

We hope that everyone, their friends and families, and their belongings (including our trailer parked at our school right on top of a hill...) are prepared and safe for the coming storm.

Lost two trees and lost power a couple of times so far.
There will be some work to do in the wake of the storm.

What about Massachusetts?

I hope everyone stays safe and sound... And that the storm won't cause too much harm.

And now, humor (always good at times of trouble):
I know you probably want to, but don't go checking on your robot with the storm raging!

Meh, they're probably used to it by now...:ahh:

The wind here in NNJ is really picking up big-time, the neighbor's 12" maple just cracked in half and fell into my backyard, so that was a 60+ MPH gust. No damage (other than the tree's pride I suppose) but we're not through it yet.

Still got power though!

Phalanx 29-10-2012 16:13

Re: Hurricane Sandy

I live a little further south of you Don. It's blowing pretty steadily right now. No power loss, other than a few brown outs or flickers.
Of course where I live must of our power lines are underground so unless a switching station gets hit, we're usually good.

It should rock us pretty solid in the next few hours. Storm track looks like it's headed right over my neighborhood.

Sandy is just full of hot air anyway. :D

Yeah, in North Jersey nothing but wind so far and some rain earlier. But it does seem like the wind is slowly picking up speed. Interestingly, usually I lose power so easily...not even a brown out yet...

Sandy's expected landfall is an hour or so away. She should be visiting Delaware very soon (how many of you have actually done that!).

To all affected directly or indirectly, prayers and well-wishes to you and your families.

Be safe and stay dry.

Two days ago the Ruckus was held at the Dome Arena. Now it's a hurricane shelter for the next couple of days.

Good luck to everyone and stay safe. Hurricanes are normally (unfortunately) our natural disaster of choice. From all of us in hurricane-land, I hope you guys don't have too much damage!

The winds have been strong (like blow-around-250-pounds-of-me-a-bit strong) down here in Columbia. All y'all up north be safe!

woo hoo!
I rigged up brief Internet access using an old wornout robot battery.
We plan to tap in occasionally to check the storms progress and keep in touch.

Large oaks dropped right and left of me, in addition to the ones I've lost.

Been without power for 5 hours.
Dinner by candlelight was romantic with the storm tossing trees by the window.

7:00 and the pressure just dropped to 28 in hg. Never seen that around Phily before.

Here is to a quick recovery. When Ike came through Cincy, we were without power for 3 days. Nothing compared to our southern friends, but for a place not used to seeing hurricane force winds, that was a long time.

Checking in from Massachusetts.

We still have power, all the schools have been closed today. I did think we were going to lose power earlier because the cable went out for a minute, but its still on!

Lots of wind and some rain though.

Lost a tree in our yard, but it didn't fall anywhere near the house (we have a big backyard).

All of y'all, stay safe.

I had to grab someone to keep them from falling over while on campus today. Then my umbrella flew away and I had to catch it...

I have a lot of friends going to college on the east coast (like, right on the coast) so I hope their schools are not under water when they go back.

Rutgers experienced some flooding (saw a few pictures from friends) but I haven't seen the latest extent of the damage.

So right now Sandy is right over New York City!! Im in rochester right now and we re just getting the outskirts of the storm!! Im sure there is more to come here and i hope everybody on the east coast is on high ground and trying to stay dry.

Effects are starting to be felt in Toronto, although not nearly as severe as the east coast.. Fallen over trees, power outages, and minor flooding. The worst is supposed to hit us at 2am. Unfortunately, a woman has already been killed by flying debris.

Re: Hurricane Sandy

Back home in NJ has been without power all night. Up here at Clarkson, we're getting high winds and a little rain, but like our Canadian next-door neighbors, we won't get anything too crazy until late tonight. From what I'm reading now, two or three storm systems are supposed to converge right between Kingston, ON and Ogdensburg, NY. So we'll be in for a wallop when it gets here.

Stay safe, everyone. Check in when you can.

klmx30302 30-10-2012 06:44

Here in Merrimack, NH we have no school today because only our high school has power, and at least 1/3 of our town has no power, as far as I know all of my friends lost power some time last night so I'm feeling pretty lucky to still have it!

You are all in my prayers and thoughts. We can feel some effects from the storm here in West Michigan, but nothing compared to what you guys have. Keep it safe folks.

P.S. Wear those safty glasses too, we don't want any falling trees to poke your eye out.

We have no school today, either, but by and large it looks like Western New York away from Lake Ontario got inconvenienced, but little more. The lake shore got hammered, though... Last I'd heard they'd evacuated thousands due to 20-foot waves.

In northern CT we faired rathe well. Only lost a few trees near me and the State re-opened the highways at 9am. We were lucky and on had the power flicker a couple of times. Everyone at the office so far says they had similar situations.

I was there as recently as a month ago and will be back after Christmas.
So there, some of us visit Delaware regularly!

It helps that my future mother-in-law lives down by Bethany so I'm there 3 or 4 times a year.

Connecticut Power Outage Map - about 40% of the state currently without power.

I live and work in the yellow section in the upper middle of the map. Which is the area I was talking about. The CT shore was detroyed and I haven't gotten any first hand reports from there yet.

Prayers and good thoughts to those on North Eastern coast. I have seen a few photos of the flooding in New York that are being passed around the company I work for. Our rental trucks are almost completely submerged! It's absolutely crazy.

Re: Hurricane Sandy

Where I am, overall, isn't too bad. All around me has no power, there's a chunk of about 15-20 houses on my street that have power (mine included).

The night of the storm was pretty interesting, I was sitting by the window the entire night watching the sky turn green every few minutes from transformers blowing, followed by a pretty big spark around 10pm where I lost power and it came back at 5am. Words spreading around that because of the amount of outages it may take 4 or 5 days to get everyone back up and running.

As far as tree damage and such, where I am in Hamilton (just outside of Trenton) there really isn't that much.

Stay safe!

Got word from my family and my high school team that they are all safe and were super lucky with the storm. However, down near the shore points, one of my good friends girlfriend had significant damage to her home and also family friends homes were horrendously damaged. Even though I love where I am right now and really can't leave, it hurts me to not be able to help them out in NJ. Thanks for the thoughts too everyone.

lost power for a total of 15 hours, luckily we had a generator, all and all i feel everyone was well prepared for what was coming!

Re: Hurricane Sandy

Bah! The ocean never even got close to my house. ;)

The worst in town was a couple of trees came down in the neighborhood (fortunately in a park, so no house damage), and a whole bunch of leaves to rake now. And the dog nor I wanted to go for a walk at the height of the storm, but we did anyway, with good results. Every day is a nice day to walk a dog.

Mark McLeod 31-10-2012 09:18

Re: Hurricane Sandy

876,339 homes without power here.
Lots of flooding in low lying areas.
Tons and tons of trees down.

No damage to my house - a couple of fence sections crushed.
Neighbors to the left and right had trees into their house or a crushed pool, so we were all out with our chainsaws in a community cleanup. Some houses have generators and supplied coffee for everyone. I now live on a temporary cul-de-sac.

I may have trouble getting our robot out for Brunswich Eruption (if they aren't down themselves).

Siri 31-10-2012 09:40

Re: Hurricane Sandy

In the outer western Philadelphia suburbs: some flooding and lots of trees and fencing down/damaged in our yard, a little water damage inside, power not expected back until November 6. (Much of the region has power already, but there's some serious and not-entirely-known damage in our area.) Some water damage in our robotics shop, but no high-ticket items. Overall, no major flooding or any life- or major property-threatening damage, so we're happy (and lucky)!

Central PA (Penn State): nothing too bad. Rough that night (rougher in that classes were only canceled at noon on Monday and were back Tuesday morning!), but basically good now.

Best wishes to everyone. 1640 hopes you and yours are doing ok!

I'm concerned for our many FIRST teams located along our Connecticut shoreline which was hard-hit by Sandy. If you are from a CT team which was impacted by the storm please e-mail me and let me know how you are faring.

BE said they will be updating teams as soon as they hear something from their school board. They will do their best to keep everyone informed in a timely manner. My personal guess will be that they will have to postpone BE. Most schools in NJ are closed until Monday, and those that aren't will have an insanely hard time finding any gas for student drivers. If you do have fuel right now, conserve it as much as you can. People in are area have already started pulling guns and been getting violent at the pumps.

Hope everyone is doing okay. PSE&G and JCPL facilities are down across NJ and ConEd doesn't seem to be doing well either.

My house won't have power for a while, we have about 5 trees down on our power lines and the transformers have blown.

The benefits of state-mandated full-service gasoline pumping...
Stay safe everyone!
