We're making an iOS scouting app

Hello everybody,

We're making a scouting app for FRC and VEX.

So a couple of us over at 2158 went through a really cool program this summer called High School Startup where high school students are encouraged to build things that will be beneficial to themselves and others, so we decided to go ahead and try our hand at making scouting easier.

Since the FRC game wont be out until January, we decided to go ahead and make it for the current vex game, and we have a working product that's being submitted to the app store right now. The idea is that you have a simple interface on your phone on which you can type in all of the robot's scores in at once, as well as type out notes on each robot, and then later, be able to have compiled statistics on how well each robot scores points in each game interaction.

Once teams have gathered information, they can then, at the push of a button, share it on our website so that others can benefit from the data that you've collected.

So I'm posting this now not only to share OUR KICKSTARTER PAGE, but also to get feedback on what y'all think about the concept in general, as well as what things we should add.

Thanks,
_Paulo

It would be awesome if this was for Android to

I second that. If not, how well will it support the iPad?

An iPad version should come out soon after iPhone! Meanwhile, although we want to get on Android, getting an FRC version up and running is going to take precedent over getting on Android. Hopefully we're able to do both before Week 1.

An iPad version is next on our list once we have iPhone up and running. Although we do want to port it to Android, that's going to require us to start from scratch, so it might take us a while.

This is a really great idea. Our team (27 Team RUSH) created an app last year for use with iPads that we used quite successfully. The one issue that our programmers are working on currently to get ready for the 2013 season is transferring all the data captured from the iPads to somewhere else. We had to tether each of the ipads to a laptop whenever we wanted to transfer data because you can't have open wifi at FRC tournaments. We still haven't found an easier way to transfer data. How did you guys do it?

When is the app going to be up and running?

It would be very easy to transfer using NFC. You'd have to use the superior mobile operating system to do it though.

After doing some research, it looks to be that you can use iPads with Bluetooth PANs. This seems to be the best solutio for an indivial team. But for a community of scouting, the best approach is a single device with cellular data, but I'd still like to know the OP's solution. On another note, NFC won't be the best solution here, because you would have to switch connections constantly, an arduous and unnecessarily manual process.
