It mentions on ball shifter page that they provide mounting points for the US Digital and Greyhill encoders.

Can someone provide me a part number for the Greyhill encoders?

Scroll down to near the bottom of the page, they have a link to the Greyhill 63R series encoders.

Future Electronics sells them, for example, but you can find them at a better price if you look. I think Digikey has them for about $10 less.

When I try to use the PDV for VEXPro products is the cost for the products supposed to go to zero in the cart? When I go to checkout it shows full price for everything still and I thought this was supposed to be a PDV.

Are you ordering more than the PDV limit?

Your PDV can be used for the following:

Either (2) Victor 888 Motor Controllers, (2) Jaguar Motor Controllers or (1) of each
(1) 2-Wire Motor 393
(1) Motor Controller 29
(1) F-F 3-Wire Adapter

The Discount Amount should be showing up on the 'My Cart' page - which you can get to at top right.

If there are still issues, give our sales team a call at 903-453-0802 and we can get it straightened out.

Is it possible to mount 2 sprockets (one on each side) to a versawheel AND a hex hub? Would that require two hex versahubs and two sprocket mount hubs? What length screws would be used? The purpose is to direct-drive a center wheel with a hex shaft and transfer torque to two other wheels with chains.

You get 2 total Victors and/or Jaguars for free along with (1) 2-Wire Motor 393, (1) Motor Controller 29 and (1) F-F 3-Wire Cable. If that is all you add to your cart the only charge should be a shipping charge.

We are disappointed to announce that VEXpro Traction Tires will not be available for the 2013 FRC Season.

Due to unforeseen manufacturing issues, we were unable to guarantee the quality level required for VEXpro Products and FRC applications. We decided that rather release a product that does not live up to our quality demands, we would postpone this item’s release.

VEXpro Traction Wheels will still be available. We recommend using Roughtop or Wedgetop tread with them.

Customers who have placed orders for VEXpro Traction Tires are being contacted individually. Contact us with any questions at support@vexrobotics.com or 903-453-0802.

This is what good suppliers do when they have a quality problem. They let their customers know about it right away.

I wish all of the suppliers I deal with would do this. Props to IFI/VEXPro.

How much will the overall diameter of a "four inch" Versawheel be changed, relative to that of a Traction Tire, when roughtop or wedgetop conveyor belting is used instead? The renderings appear to show the Traction Tire proud of the wheel by ~3/8", so I'm guessing that traditional treads will reduce the OD by ~1/4", is that about right?

Re: VEX Robotics Relaunches VEXpro Product Line with over 120 New & Improved Products

What gear ring ratio do you recommend for the mounting the 775 into the VersaPlanetary gearbox with the intention of mating it into a gearbox with two CIM motors? The CIMs are rated at 5300 rpm no load rpm. The 775 18V are rated at 19600 no load rpms. The resutling ratio is 3.679. Do we go with a 3:1 gear ring or a 4:1 gear ring?

Really love the concept of not pressing on a pinion gear. That is the most stressful part of building the robot because one small slip and you are out 5 or more days waiting for a shipment of a new motor. Also, anything to make it easier for teams without a lot of equipment to use.

Thanks.

The pinion thing is an annoying issue, but having an $30 Arbor Press + a few extra motors makes the process go a little smoother.

Also I asked this before but it seemed to have gotten buried, do you have any load tests on the VersaPlanetary? I know BB rates theirs at 35 ft-lbs.

Paul Copioli 21-12-2012 01:55

Re: VEX Robotics Relaunches VEXpro Product Line with over 120 New & Improved Products

topgun,

Actually, the RS775-18V when being used at 12V only has about a 13,000 RPM free speed. The free speed is proportional to driving voltage so 12/18*19,600 is ~ 13,000. Comparing that to the 5310 RPM of the CIM motor, you get 2.44:1. Matching at free speed is not necessary (as a matter of fact, I never match at free speed) as the robot never really operates at free speed. For general drive train use, 3:1 is the proper ratio to use for the RS-775. However, I have used as high as 4:1 before to try to match speeds at operating conditions.

Think of it this way, at free speed the faster motor will try to drive the slower motor so the slower motor will act as a generator (a load) on the smaller motor. Don't worry, though, as soon as some load gets on the system, the lower power motor will slow down much faster and the speeds will be matched. Dr. Joe Johnson posted about this several years ago. I printed out that post and still have it for reference as he explains it much better than I explain it.

So the short answer is use 3:1.

Mk.32,

I have conducted all of the testing on the VersaPlanetary Gearboxes and have made my final load rating conclusions. I am currently putting it in a format more useable for FRC teams. Included in the ratings will be rated continuous torque, Max Torque, overhung load equations (aka force on the shaft), and recommended motor / gear ratio combination ratings.

However, I will share some of the data here. Please note that something will break at the Maximum tourque rating:

All ratings are based on the output torque and the gear stage at the output.

3:1, 4:1, 5:1 gear stage maximum output load rating with 1/2" Hex Shaft = 160 N-m [~120ft-lb]
The failure mode is the actual Hex Ultimate stress failure.

10:1 gear stage maximum output load rating with 1/2" Hex Shaft = 100 N-m [~74ft-lb]
The failure mode is the carrier plate stress crack originating from the mating internal spline connection. The 10:1 stage carrier pins are very close to the internal spline. This could not be avoided, but the 10:1 is above our estimated maximum Torque.

So if you are using a 50:1 double reduction gearbox, then I suggest you put the 5:1 stage on the output.

For those of you doing the math yourselves, the 100:1 gearbox with a RS775 has an output stall torque of around 58 ft-lb so it is below the max torque rating of the gearbox.

We will have a ratings table for our recommended combinations and potential failure modes for motor / ratio combinations up to 1000:1.

Paul

Re: VEX Robotics Relaunches VEXpro Product Line with over 120 New & Improved Products

Paul,

If you were to use the versaplanetary with the CIM motor output shaft into another gearbox, for example the 7:1 single speed gearbox. Then the torque rating of the final gearbox would be more important correct.

For example could you use a 700:1 reduction by having a 100:1 versaplanetary into a 7:1 single speed to drive an arm. I'm thinking of an application similar to the hip joint gearbox on 148's 2011 Raptor.

Paul Copioli 21-12-2012 03:46

Re: VEX Robotics Relaunches VEXpro Product Line with over 120 New & Improved Products

Allen,

The rating of the VersaPlanetary only really cares about what output it sees. Your question pertains to the output torque rating of the single speed gearbox, which I am not on the hook for calculating (well, at least not yet).

The problem with your specific example is the torque rating of the 8mm aluminum output shaft and 2mm keyway combination. The load rating for the VP 8mm shaft option will be significantly lower than the 1/2" hex rating. Those numbers will be on our web site soon.

Paul

I have a brief question that isn't really relevant given the delay in availability of the traction tires.

On the recent EWCP podcast, John talked a bit about trying different tread profiles and how he was surprised by the effectiveness of the 'W' pattern that's available on the VersaWheel. Why, then, do the traction tires available for the traction wheels have a different pattern and can you say which performs better than the other?

There's no problem using 9mm pulleys in the drive, given you do the math, and take a look at what worked in the past. 971 ran 9mm, 24 (or so) GT2 pulleys with 3.5" diameter, 2" wide wheels and a traction limited low gear. As far as I know, they never had any issues ratcheting. There are plenty of other threads discussing this, but the horsepower ratings Gates gives are conservative for FRC applications.

According to the Google Doc that Adam Heard compiled, they had minor ratcheting issues.

If you use a LARGE pulley you can get away with 9mm, but there is very little penalty to stepping up to 15, and you will most certainly never ratchet if properly configured. Our design mandates smaller pulleys, so it's safer for us to go 15. Anyone with the guts (or foolishness :P) to do a belt-in-tube system should probably go 15mm.

If you go 9mm, use GT / GT2 pulleys. HTD won't cut it.

Chris Is Me is right, we did have some ratcheting issues, but these only showed up in the post season.

We ended up replacing all of the belts before Madtown. They all failed by the teeth falling off, a sign of under tensioning. Thankfully they failed in a graceful way (robot still drove, just slightly reduced performance) and it was moderately easy to replace the belts.

We are still figuring out what we will do next year. We are considering widening the belts if we have space, increasing pulley diameters if we have space, or just running with the same set up again because it lasted for 3 competitions.

I was going over our potential order, and something ran across my mind,

Say I purchase a 3:1 ratio VersaPlanetary, and then realize that the 3:1 isn't enough of a drop. If I wanted the 10:1 ratio instead, can I just swap out the 3:1 gear sets for a 10:1 gear kit? Or will I have to use the 10:1 gearbox?

In theory, I ought to just be able to slap the 10:1 gear kit in there, but trying to be careful when ordering.

It's my understanding that the VersaPlanetaries are hot-swappable. The front and end pieces remain constant with your motor and output shaft options. Meanwhile, everything in between can be added/removed as you wish.

The VersaPlanetary is a beautiful system in my eyes. The ease of versatility isn't matched in the market.

Re: VEX Robotics Relaunches VEXpro Product Line with over 120 New & Improved Products

Sunny,

You can absolutely just by the 10:1 gear kit. However, the 3:1 (and 4:1) gear boxes come with the 8mm CIM motor shaft. The 10:1 gear box comes with the 1/2" hex shaft. If you want the 10:1 and 1/2" hex, then you need to buy the 10:1 gear kit and the 1/2" hex shaft separately.

The gear kit is very easy to change by just removing the 2 #8 screws. The shaft is a little harder as you will need snap ring pliers to remove the shaft.

I'm impressed with the Vex Pro 2 speed shifter and was already to buy when I noticed the output shaft uses hex rod.

The reason for wanting a round 1/2" shaft with a 1/8" key way is because this shaft will match up with a very wide range of sprockets and pulleys. In particular I would like to try out the belts in the kit of parts and substitute your nice 2 speed for the default single speed transmission.

Only question is how can I make this work when my team doesn't own or have access to a lathe or a broach/press?

Paul, is Vex willing to build a few special order shafts for smaller teams without machining resources?

Re: VEX Robotics Relaunches VEXpro Product Line with over 120 New & Improved Products

I received some VEXPro material today, from an order placed before kickoff. I'll be testing a fixed ratio gearbox and a Versaplanetary later on. Today we started working with the 7075 shaft stock and related components.

This stuff is really great! The first thing we worked with was some 1/2" hex shaft stock. Facing the ends we were impressed with how nicely it machines. It is noticeably harder than 6061, and this is apparent when cutting with a band saw, but facing the ends was not very different from facing 6061. The faced surfaces are beautiful.

As promised, the hex shafts slide nicely into bearings with no sticking or jamming. The collars are nice and small, fit properly, and feel very secure when tightened.

The hex shaft stock also fit into a hex hole that we broached in one of our standard steel poly-vee J-section pulleys using a duMONT 77713 that I purchased from McMaster-Carr (2875A24). The fit is a little tight, but we like it that way.

I will be using VEXPro shafts, bearings, and hardware for a project in the research lab at my day job -- and I suspect a lot of this same stuff will prove useful on my team's FRC robot as well.

Nicely done, VEXPro! :)

--------

Edit: after posting I ordered a couple of gears for my day job project, and received notification that they have been shipped within 20 minutes of the order.
Freaky fast, kinda like McMaster, or Jimmy Johns. ;)

222 is extremely disappointed that we received our two 3 stage ball shifters with a paper in each box informing us that the third stage gears were not shipped with the transmission and that they will be delayed.

Since the 3 stage transmissions and gears show as in stock as of this post we would like to inform others who may have ordered this 3 stage ball shifter of the gear delay.

The team member who purchased the parts talked to IFI this morning and said that the gears should be in stock early next week. This means that we will (hopefully) have functional transmissions a week later than expected. While this may not affect our schedule too much it would have certainly been nice to know at the time of ordering rather than the time of delivery that certain required parts are not yet available.

This happened to us as well, but we ordered additional 34 and 50 tooth gears for the 3rd stage, so it didn't affect us much.

Additionally, it is worth checking to make sure your purchases will ship in a timely manner. I ordered QTY:10 of the 22T Hex Sprocket on Monday night, which was listed as "In Stock". When I didn't receive a shipping confirmation all day Tuesday, I called Wednesday morning to find out they wouldn't be in stock until Thursday or Friday. VEXpro then offered to ship them Wednesday if I was ok with not having the "VEXpro" logo and Tooth Count stamped on the sprockets. I quickly agreed to have them sent "as is".

I'm no warehouse management expert, but if "In Stock" is advertised on the website, it probably should be on your shelves. I completely understand having to process a ton of shipments, but not having the products available while listing as "In Stock" doesn't seem right.

Then again, I could be totally interpreting the situation wrong, but all I know is we won't get our sprockets until Monday :( [EDIT: While the initial estimated delivery date was Monday, it appears that our sprockets will be coming in today! Thanks!]

Also, I'm still waiting to hear back on our replacement Hex Bearings from IFI, one of ours didn't fit the 1/2" Hex output shaft. I had 16 similarly bad Hex Bearings from AM, and after I called yesterday they had 16 new bearings in the mail within an hour!

On a lighter note, we love our VEXpro Ball Shifters! And they come in such cool boxes! :D

Re: VEX Robotics Relaunches VEXpro Product Line with over 120 New & Improved Products

Michael and Brad,

I apologize for your situation regarding the ball shifter gears and the sprockets. We 100% quality inspect all of our custom made components (we lot check commodity items like bearings) and we found the engraving issue with all of the 16T and 22T #25 sprockets. We shipped out some without engraving but sent the rest to be engraved and will have them Monday. They are currently marked as "ships early next week" so you can still order them. This was a timing issue and I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.

We did have to ship a certain quantity of the 3 Stage Ball Shifters incomplete without the 2 third stage gears. Our rationale in shipping these incomplete was that we'd rather get the bulk of the shifter components out to customers and let them start assembling the gearboxes.

We have shipped out all of the missing gears for orders that shipped without them and the 3 Stage Ball Shifters are now shipping complete. Both Mike's and Brad's (well, someone else on your team) gears will arrive at the shipping address today. I have sent both of you the tracking numbers via PM.

For the stock situation, there are rare cases where our actual inventory and Web site stock status are not in sync, specifically when orders for larger quantities come in quickly. We agree that our customers need to know the actual status of items so they can have knowledge of when they will arrive. We move them to either "out of stock" or "ships in xx days" as soon as we are made aware of the stock status.

For the VEXpro components, I made the decision to not put an item "out of stock" on the web site if it was going to be made available in a week or less, but rather put "available in xx days" so you can still order it. If it is placed "out of stock", then you can't even order the component.

You'll notice that some sprockets and 2 of the VersaHubs are marked as 'Shipping Early Next Week' -allowing customers to place orders but informing them of the shipping delay.

With regards to the hex bearing, our customer support received an e-mail just before 4pm yesterday regarding the bearing issue. If your issue is critical, please call our customer support so we can address it immediately. We will send your bearing out today along with an RMA number and a shipping label to ship the bad bearing back to us.

Once again, we apologize for the issues you both had and appreciate the feedback. Please do not hesitate to contact our customer support directly. At VEX Robotics, customer support is our highest priority so if you are not satisfied with something please let us know.

Paul

I'd like to throw out that other than a interference fit between the gearbox shafts & gearbox bearings (0.002-ish), our parts have been really great. The 1/2" hex shaft and the piloting hex hubs are ridiculously nice for prototyping.

Actually, it's probably better that you did, all things considered. It gave Paul an opportunity to address the problem promptly and openly, so as to set an example for future interactions with IFI. Assuming that no company can maintain a perfect record forever, the next best thing is for them to have evidence of successfully resolved problems out here on the Internet.

Besides, telling ChiefDelphi about the problem means that dozens of people who have a need to know, now know. If you hadn't spoken up, they would still be ignorant.

Received the Versa Planetary gearboxes yesterday that were ordered on Kickoff day. They look nice. One thing that's no big deal but I figured I'd mention is that in the future perhaps a tumbling or chamfering process needs to be added to some parts. Some edges are rather sharp. One slight difficulty I had was removing the little slotted steel motor adapter bushing once installed, if I decide to use a different one (or none). Is there a good method for this?

Paul Copioli 12-01-2013 12:13

Re: VEX Robotics Relaunches VEXpro Product Line with over 120 New & Improved Products

The bushings are a tight fit in order to guarantee a good clamp and good concentricity when the ring compresses. The easiest way to get them out is to use the motor they are designed for and put a slight side load when pulling out. This worked for me when doing testing.

Noted about the sharp corners. In some cases the manufacturer did not follow our print regarding breaking edges. We will improve this on future items.

Thanks,

Paul

Re: VEX Robotics Relaunches VEXpro Product Line with over 120 New & Improved Products

We assembled the VEXpro 3 stage Ball shifters today.

This post is to alert IFI and other teams of an issue with the assembly of the 3 stage transmission only.

Both of our transmissions had this issue and it took some investigation to find the exact issue.

There is a gap between the stamped metal plate that houses the third stage bearing and the 1/2" hex standoff's. If you install the plate it will bend and cause other problems. It appears that hex molded into the transmission housing is approximately .05" too deep as the 3D model measures .25" and the actual measurement of the molded housing is .30". One fix would be to add shims between the 1/2" hex and the metal plate.

We will be shipping a retrofit kit to all customers who have already received the shifter. All 3 stage shifters shipping starting Wednesday will already include the interim solution.

The method I used:
1. Assemble the wheel.
2. Cut the tread to length.
3. Hold the tread in place with a few zip ties or a belt.
4. Drill holes through the ends of the tread through the wheel rim using a small pilot bit.
5. Fasten the tread to the wheel using rivets, or self-tapping plastic screws.
6. Remove the zip-ties.

I am experimenting with some self-tapping screws that work REALLY well. While I would personally use the VEXpro traction tires, we will make sure there will be good options available for those who want to use their own tread.

Can the Andy Mark alligator clips (am-0894) be used to attach the tread to the traction wheels?

I am getting 8+ second load and update times in my cart when I change quantities, or calculate shipping, etc. Something doesn't seem right.

We have been working on some issues related to this. Users should start to see improvements.

Also, today we have posted the Quick Start Guide for the VersaPlanetary gearbox and detail drawings for the VEXpro Traction, Omni and Mecanum Wheels. These documents can be found at the bottom of the related product pages.

Best,
Ricky

Is anyone else having trouble adding the c-clip to the third stage on their Ball Shifters (our final stage is a 60:24, if that makes a difference)? When we place the 24-tooth gear on the shaft, the c-clip groove does not stick out as much as the instructions show. Within the next two days we will see if the same issue exists on the second shifter we ordered.

I am not sure I follow you. That looks like I expect it to look. Are you having a problem installing the E-clip? We have assembled several here and do not have any issues installing the e-clip.

Should your mecanum wheels be really loud?

We haven't driven them yet -- we assembled one octocanum pod just to make sure everything integrated properly, and hooked the CIM up to a battery while the frame was upside-down on the floor. And it created quite a racket!

As far as we can tell it's the rollers rattling as the wheel spins. Is this normal?

According to the assemblers, the notch for the clip was partially covered by the gear.
