From your comment I presume scouting is a big part of IRI, like I expected. But with the skeleton crew some teams are bringing, it has to be difficult for many teams to do so.
What does 987 typically do as far as scouting for IRI?

We take a small crew to IRI so we aren't able to scout as thoroughly as we do during the regular season so we pre-scout (and use season stats including OPR along with subjective observations) to establish a rough ranking list going into IRI. We check as many performances for each of the top 35 or so listed teams as we can to verify performance levels and adjust rankings accordingly. We still keep an eye on other teams though in case some of them have made improvements that would bump them ahead of some of the other teams on the pre-scout list. Scouting for us is admittedly less formal than regular season.;) To use a gambling term (a surprise for a High Roller, right?) and to quote from one of my fellow mentors, "With all of the really great teams at IRI, picking is really kind of a craps shoot". |
