Attaching a shaft to a Vex Motor

It seems the vex motor outputs are simply a square shaft receiver. I don't see any way to lock the shaft in the motor. We were interested in direct driving a wheel from a vex motor, and having a short 'arm' on another one (5 inches).

Am I correct when I say that we have to create our own shaft retaining method with a shaft collar and mounting plate?

We did a mounting plate and bearing support last year, with the motor mount points already long this doesn't take much more additional thickness. We used. 125 Plate.

I suppose you could glue the shaft in, but then you'd lose the 2nd bearing support.

That's how many VEX teams do it.
