Re: Naming the robot

Last year our robot was named Fromage. Actually it was Her Royal Majesty Fromage the Great. Fromage came from one day in the build season when we were weighing her and realized she was way overweight. We agree'd on swiss cheesing her, and someone said we should call her the swiss name for cheese.
After explaining that there are several official languages in Switzerland, we agreed on Fromage.

This year, the robot's name is WUERFELVERBINDER, after our Bosch cubic joints. It's also our team's new favorite word. Another part of our robot is named [EPIC VOICE]THE SPATULA OF DOOOOOM[/EPIC VOICE].

Re: Naming the robot

We name ours after people who done a lot to help us or that inspire us. This year ours is named Ingrid's DREAM. Named after Ingrid Tay, a former team mate who graduated from ASU with a 4.0 gpa in mechanical engineering on top of being undocumented. An outstanding feat in itself for a normal student, much less an undocumented one. The DREAM is for the dream act which our team full heartedly supports! Hopeful it will pass in congress and the senate this year....

Re: Naming the robot

2815, being sponsored by the University of South Carolina, has a bit of a tradition of honoring the school's mascot, the gamecock.

2009: Cocked and Loaded
2010: CockADoodleDoo
2011: Cockasaurus Rex
2012: Incocknito
2013: TBD, though contenders have already started circulating around the shop.

(Yes, we know this can get testy as one gets further from South Carolina. However it is also very normal here, appearing no fewer than three times in the fight song. The mentors retain veto privileges, which helps smooth it out.)

Re: Naming the robot

Seeing as the OP's team name is "Shrapnel Sergeants", I propose that their robot name should be "Sergeant ________", where the blank is filled in by something different every year. If it can't be filled in, use "Sarge" instead.

330 has had some unnamed robots, some named robots, and some named robots where the name was never recognized officially. "BeachBot", "BeachBot 2", "B2K", and "BeachBot 4.0" (1998-2001) led off, followed some years later by "Pedro" (2005), and some years later by "32" (2010), then "Skyhook" (2012). I don't remember any names being officially recognized from 2002-2004, or from 2006-2010, though the 2006 robot was tagged with a name for one match...before someone canceled it.

Re: Naming the robot

Hmm. Ya know, we really havent named our robot as a whole really, but rather as individual parts.

Last year we had the:

Bridginatior
Indexinator
Shootinator
Many many many Chromeinators (We had sooo much plastic stick-on chrome on our robot last year, but its kinda a tradition now)
And at our first district we had to add the deflectinator to stop balls getting lodged in our wheel.

So this year we have the Ascendinator.... Thats its so far! :p

Re: Naming the robot

Animals. Always animals. We usually decide based on what the robot looks like. Awesomeness of the name seems to be directly proportional to robot performance.

Starting in 2007:
Tubasaurus
Ball Frog
Luna Beast (or Balrus)
Hammerhead (or Ball Shark)
G-Wrath
Kracken

Re: Naming the robot

These are some interesting responses, haha. I guess since everyone else is, I might as well share my team's robot names over the years:

2008: Myrtle the Turtle (robot was a simple, heavy chassis)
2009: Hunk o' Junk (robot was shaped like a trash can)
2010: Reccostobor ("robot soccer" backwards)
2011: FIRST Strike (just a creative name)
2012: Trickshot (Nifty basketball-related term)

We usually just come up with something nifty or characteristic to our robot or the game. I guess we'll just have to wait and see if we can come up with something soon. :P

Re: Naming the robot

We had a few years where the robot name was actually a big thing. The plan was go from A-Z, alternating between male and female names that had something to do with the game for that year. 2009 was the last year a name really "stuck," and I can't even remember what the 2011 bot was (Felicity or Fiona, possibly) because we never used the name.

2006: Balzac (can't remember the reason for the life of me)
2007: Charlotte (spider field element -> Charlotte's Web)
2008: Atlas (based off of the cover for Atlas Shrugged; we had a lot of Ayn Rand...enthusiasts that year)
2009: Diana (Roman goddess of the moon)
2010: Erdős (after the mathematician of the same name)

In theory, it was a good trend. In reality, names don't stick unless the team is enthusiastic about it. Naming your robot is a lot like naming stray animals...you get attached to them awfully quick.

Re: Naming the robot

We haven't come anywhere near picking a name for this year's machine, yet. Most of our robot names happen on accident; sometimes we choose them for a teamwide theme, sometimes it occurs based on performance/awards/events. Since we compete in two different annual tournaments, we have double the naming fun. :p

FRC:
2011: The Brave Little Toaster (Our very first FRC machine. I, personally, called it "Homeslice." )
2012: Patriot Toaster (It looked like a patriot missile launcher, so our teamwide theme was military.)

OCCRA:
I'm not sure of any robot before my Freshman year. I joined the team Sophomore year, but I've heard many stories.
2009: Purple People Eater / H1N1 (Apparently they began with the PPE robot for the first four competitions, then tore it apart the day before the championships while our coach was in a staff meeting and nearly give him a heart attack when he saw the sea of parts lying about. H1N1 was the complete rebirth of PPE built in 9 hours, and was good enough that it took them all the way to the semifinals.)
2009 VEX: Spazzy (It had a bad receiver, so the robot would literally slap itself silly without anyone even near the remote.)
2010: The Tank (Named after our third tournament, when the thing had such a strong drivetrain that it overpowered two opponent machines pushing down on it while climbing up a ramp.)
2010 VEX: Spazzy Two-Point D'0H!
2011: Lucas (We had three human Lucases (Lucai?) on a team consisting of only 16 members that year, so naturally the robot had to be one, too.)
2011 VEX: Steve Spazzy the Third Jr. Jobs (In honor of Steve Jobs, but we still had to maintain the Spazzy legacy simultaneously.)
2012: Beautiful Beast (First year we've won Beautiful Bot, and that thing was positively ferocious!)
2012 VEX: Toast Patrol and Roller Toaster

2002 - MOE-Hawk
2003 - GeroniMOE
2004 - GizMOE
2005 - MOEbius
2006 - TerMOEnator
2007 - MOEzilla
2008 - DynaMOE
2009 - CozMOE
2010 - MOEmentum

Re: Naming the robot

The only names from my team I can remember are the Broominator (2008), and Ratchet (big bot) and Clank (little bot) in 2011. Last year it was named Antares, with a nickname "Blue Rhino." I think we'll be sticking with the star names this year.

Re: Naming the robot

We named our minibot the Kraken. Release the Kraken had a nice ring to it. In reality it was somewhat less dramatic.

Oh, god. Our mechanical lead had the robot named Kraken last year just so the anouncer could say that. They never did. That was a bad naming year.

However, annother senior did tell us to get Kraken one time...
