Favorite Motor?

Just wanted to know what some of your favorite motors are for FIRST.

Mine is the PG-71 Powerhouse and sleek design.

and the Window motor. I like that it doesn't travel after the power is cut.

CIM all the way

Re: Favorite Motor?

I'd have to say the CIM motor, the other 3 CIM motors, the Mini CIMs, the extra two CIMs we get to use this year, and the CIM sitting at my desk right now that's survived 3 seasons (I call him CIMMY).

CIM hands down.

gotta go with banebots those motors and planetary gearboxes on them are awesome

I like the mini-CIM's this year.

But quite honestly, the VersaPlanetary gearbox has made me like RS-550's, RS-775's and FP-9015's a lot more. No more crying over losing the gear puller when the motor burns out! Hopefully they withstand the stresses of an FRC season.

If I were to name just one motor, I would have to say it' is the one that best meets the needs for a design.

OK, now for my favorites:
CIM, followed closely by the RS 550.

I don't know, I kind of miss the Globe motors and their odd-shaped output shaft...

Definately the 2004 drill motors!

*Sarcastic grin*

In all seriousness, the CIM is by far my favorite motor.

definetly fp 0673 so much power and speed

Re: Favorite Motor?

In my personal rookie season we used a high torque motor to move our kicker so the PG71 Gearmotor is my favorite motor. With the cims as a close second.

The Mini-Cim is so cute!

The CIM class motors are, I think, the best for their ability to be versatile. Easy mounting holes and easy to use with a PVC shaft. What more could you want? :D

I like the CIM because it is so hard to kill.

Re: Favorite Motor?

Tie between the CIM and the Mini-CIM. Not just because the motors are fantastic and durable, but also because there are so many COTS gearbox options for them. I especially like using modified AM Planetaries to throw extra reduction onto an existing CIM gearbox.

I really, really like how the mini-cim has a slightly higher free speed too. The perfect shooter motor, if you don't mind the weight.

Re: Favorite Motor?

As someone who remembers times before the CIM (and the subsequent period where it was referred to as the Atwood or Chiaphua), I can tell you that thing is a blessing from the heavens. Especially compared to those Bosch drill motors that were the default choice of FRC drivetrains before CIMs (and into the early CIM years, where we could only use 2 of them).

I, too, miss the globe motor. That thing was a horse. I know people are going to laud the PG-71 as its replacement, but I'll trust those the same way when I see them endure the kind of beating those globes endured. They could take a lickin' and keep on tickin'.

Currently the CIMs. But I will have agree with the Globe motors; those were champs. I horded as many as I could when I was a student. :)

Personally I'd have to say the BAG motor. It has a lot of applications, and can be used in situations where two smaller motors would usually be used.

I'm not sure I follow. In what ways is it superior to many of the other 500 series motors we have (FP/AndyMark 9015, Banebots 550, etc.)?

It's less power dense, so whereas we've smelled some from our 550 on our shooter, we haven't smelled any some from the BAGs

It won't burn up at the thought of working hard

CIM

EricH 31-01-2013 22:08

Re: Favorite Motor?

Gimme a CIM first (any variety except the Big CIM from '06 and '07--too heavy), then an FP motor with standard gearbox, then a BaneBots 775 or AM 9015 with PG-71 attached. After those, a Globe motor. Fill in the rest of the BB lineup and I think that's about it.

For specialist applications, van door and window motors may move above the others, but it's gotta be a pretty special application, especially one where the others won't work without some form of special gearbox mod.

CIM hands down, love that we get 6 of them this year :D

I'm on board with the BAG motor this year. Its a 550 without all the problems of a 550.

Re: Favorite Motor?

I have to say for the last 4 years it has been the CIM but my new favorite is the Mini CIM, I love those things so much, especially on Frisbee shooters ;)
Also, this seems like a perfect place to post this picture of a few orders that came in in the last week...

The globe motor, those things were amazing.
Also the Fisher Price, all the RPMs in the world :D

Re: Favorite Motor?

Am I the only one who likes the 775? Yes, I know it has had problems with case shorts, but it has the thermal mass of a large motor and the power of a 550. Lots of power from a BaneBots motor without the threat of overheating. It also just feels like a pig of a motor when you hold it in your hand.
