Re: 2013 Where is Wolcott Invitational
Can't wait for this! Also, what is that "mentor robot" you mentioned?
|
Re: 2013 Where is Wolcott Invitational
FRC666 The TorMentors is looking for a good practice bot to run against the kids. If you team is intersted give Dave a shout. The first year we did this I believe we used Max's, then the Gaelhawks, and last year it was GUS.

My mistake it was 228 in 2009, 230 in 2010, 230 in 2011, 228 in 2012

Re: 2013 Where is Wolcott Invitational
So which unfortunate team gets to sacrifice their practice bot for the pleasure of the mentors this year? I am so ready for WIWI this year! Can it be June 8th already?
|
Re: 2013 Where is Wolcott Invitational
Team 230's practice bot is getting a make over and will re-emerge as the FRC666 TorMentor machine of doom.

Re: 2013 Where is Wolcott Invitational
9am - hosting FRC Info session for anyone thinking of starting an FRC team this year.
10am-noon - NEMO (Non-Engineering Mentor Organization) meeting for all adult mentors, focusing on non-technical topics. Come and go as your schedule allows. Lunchtime - brief District update. See you there! |
Re: 2013 Where is Wolcott Invitational
Do we know if anyone plans on recording the WIWI event quals and elimination matches? I personally would like to be able to rewatch matches after the event to review the event and improve driving skills. I personally would love to see a similar recording to what was done at MSC where there was a camera, I think it may have been a GoPro, on a stick near the center line which covered all of the field. I find this more effective than the FIRST scoreboard/ webcast as you can see more of the action.
So if you or you teams is planning on recording all of the matches let me know! Stand videos aren't that bad too, but my preference is MSC style recording. Additionally, if you record the matches make sure you upload them to YouTube afterward! Let's make this happen! : ) |
Re: 2013 Where is Wolcott Invitational
I have a gopro clone we could clip up high if the PTB approve. It has a remote control so we wouldn't have to record the whole day. any one want to try to get this on the program? be reponsible for stop/start of match filming? not sure of battery duration, so maybe a charge during lunch would be needed . i'd process results and post to you tube if we do this.

I see no issue with running the GoPro. I don't know if we have anything in house you could attatch it too, but I it's something I'm willing to look into. Maybe we could into set up with it Friday night? As for everyone else, I'll be posting again soon with a ton of details (Team Contacts you should have recived it all). It's looking like we're going to have an awesome event this weekend! |
Re: 2013 Where is Wolcott Invitational
"MSC style" video was created by FRC 2337, The Enginerds.
It's a GoPro mounted on a painter's pole which is supported by an outdoor umbrella stand. Usually it sits behind the scorer's table. It's connected to a laptop with an operator who stops and starts the recording for each match. I'm not sure what software they use but I know it's on a Mac. |
Re: 2013 Where is Wolcott Invitational
I have a grippy tripod that could wrap around the upper bar of the center netting support. If we did it on the scoring table side, the remote operator could see the little flashing LED that tells when the camera is taping. I tested the remote and got over a 30 foot range for it. I think the camera would then be operable from the opposite side. The remaining question is will the coverage be wide enough from my proposed position.
I will try to get there Friday evening, but I cannot be certain I can find Wolcott in the dark. |

Re: 2013 Where is Wolcott Invitational
Hey everyone. I'll be coming back to CT for the weekend to volunteer at WIWI as your friendly, neighborhood CSA(for those that don't know, I'm the guy with the neon orange hat that gets to troubleshoot and help fix any and all technical issues regarding your robot and driverstation). Well, since I'm currently living in Rochester, NY at school(RIT, ask me about it!), I don't have anywhere to stay near there. I've been talking with Dave and he hasn't found anyone willing/able to host me.
If you or someone you know lives near there or is going to the event and willing to let me crash on a couch or something, I would be forever grateful! I know I'm cutting it close, but anything and everything is appreciated. Thanks! |

Stopped by for camera testing. Tried several spots atop my long yellow pole and tripod base. Adam and I traipsed around and made some test footage of several places. Camera does not have as wide a coverage as I supposed, so it will have to be farther back than the projection screen on the scoring table side. We tried top center of the bleachers and from one corner. I'll attach a couple of frame grabs so you can see what may happen. Gotta run the camera without LCD screen to have any chance at decent battery life. Recharge via the laptop is sloooooow.
Thank you, Adam. |

webcast anyone?

Re: 2013 Where is Wolcott Invitational
I would just like to congratulate Team 195 The Cybernights, Team 177 Bobcat Robotics, and Team 2836 Team Beta, on their win today. Together both 177 and 195 were impossible to both defend. Once they were in the safety zone and aligned, we began cycling and 2836 was there to block us.
In Boston we came in last place. After never giving up, we decided to flip the shooter upside down, and make many modifications. At the CT State Championships we came in 29th place, and had a 100% accurate autonomous. We still weren't satisfied! So the changes continued. Today in Wilcott we remained in the top 4 almost the whole day until the last 2 matches where we dropped down to rank 9! As the alliance selections continued we ended up being the 7th seed captain where I was forced to make a choice that my team wasn't prepared to do. 2064 - The one and only 30 point climb that used tape measures! Almost every match you contributed at least 20 points and very often 30. As a team we have worked with for years, it was a pleasure working with a good friend. 1511 - As I began speaking into the microphone, I still had no idea who I was going to choose. When the time came to say the number, I thought back to Boston, and realized a great team still remained, 1511. With their autonomous and 50 point climb, the top of our pyramid was always a point of focus for the audience. With the great match and team analysis you provided, we were able to outscore many alliances. 1099, The DiscoTechs, is proud to have captained the 7th alliance that involved only climbing/dumping and defense. Many huge upsets were made and in the end the 7th alliance played the 1st. |
Re: 2013 Where is Wolcott Invitational
Congrats to 195, 177 and our close friends in Woodbury 2836 for their win at Wolcott this year.
Being the captain of the eighth seeded alliance, we knew that first match was going to be tough and these guys didn't disappoint. Thanks to our alliance partners 230 Gael Hawks and 2067 Apple Pi for their help in bringing our alliance all the way to the final three alliances being underdogs the whole way. With our bit having all of our problems in the eliminations, we needed these teams to step up and they did. Does anyone have a video of Team 237 falling off the pyramid during eliminations and flailing in our back as we moved back and forth in front of the pyramid? We'd like to get a good show of a funny fall off the pyramid. |
Re: 2013 Where is Wolcott Invitational
Team 195 had an awesome time at WiWi this year. Our hat's off to our gracious hosts on an excellently run event!
Team 177 Bobcat Robotics and Team 2836 Team Beta it was a pleasure to finally get to work with both of you and to play in eliminations rounds on the same side of the glass! Yay! Congratulations to all the teams this year. This was a really fun game and I think all CT teams are really showing their strength and ingenuity! I can't wait till we are all working together even more in future years and making us all CONNECTICUT STRONG! |
Re: 2013 Where is Wolcott Invitational
Congrats to teams 195, 177, and 2836 You guys did amazing. I also want to thank teams 228 and 3525 for being amazing alliance partners ! Hopefully, we will be able to work more together with you guys in the future ! :D So the power of orange may prevail ! Can't wait to see you all at Bash at the Beach:)

Re: 2013 Where is Wolcott Invitational
Team Beta had a great time! It was awesome to work with 195 and 177, and we were happy to play a defensive role in the finals. Congratulations to 195 on an epic season, and it was an honor to work with the legendary 177.
It was hard to keep 1099 from cycling, they really hit their stride in Wolcott. 2064 had a very consistent and impressive climber. It was wonderful to see 1511 make the trip to find Wolcott, and the 50 point combo was awesome! Thank you to 1071 for hosting an amazing event. Team Beta can't wait to find Wolcott again next year! |
Re: 2013 Where is Wolcott Invitational
I edited the recording of the final match and posted to youtube. Attendees at the event may have noticed a tall yellow pole at the top of the bleachers. On top of that was my gopro clone camera that made some full field recordings of some of the matches. Let me know if you think it is worth editing and converting some of the rest.

This was my first FIRST volunteering experience and I had a great time. Congratulations to all the teams on making a great showing! Also, this was one of the cooler things I've seen this season in person: 80 point climbs!

Also, thank you to all the teams! You were all great and made my job as Head Referee that much easier! 195, thank you for allowing me to play a joke on you once again with the red card. I just wish I had been able to have a real one instead of that gift card. Thank you to all the amazing students and mentors from Team 1071 for once again putting on an amazing event, and team 228 for providing us with some equally amazing food! |
