The finals matches are up on youtube. I also posted a bunch of pictures, though these are mostly of our team and our alliance partners. Others may be able to spot yourselves in the crowd shots... |

Todd is part of the reason that 2363 is such a great team.
Thanks Todd |
Re: Virginia Regional 2013
Well, aren't we all just feeling the love? :)
Seriously, though, the bus ride down to Palmetto with 1610 was one of the highlights of my year. Coming off the craziness of the final weekend, and the rapid turnaround preparing for a week 1 final, it was great having hours to just sit and talk to other people who are just as passionate about FIRST. I don't think there was any aspect of this year's game, our strategies, design decisions, and team organizations that we didn't discuss in detail. If we had to go down, there is no one we'd rather lose to... Also, there is another good video up with the aforementioned shout-outs. Stick around for the match afterwards, it was the best one of the finals. (heh, heh) |
Re: Virginia Regional 2013
There is a school of thought in FRC Strategy that eliminations are usually won or lost the second following the 16th pick in the draft. After all alliances are put together, scouters with the right data and strategists with the right "feel of the game" can usually guess how elims will play out. I didn't have the heart to tell the students on 422 that they were probably the third or 4th best alliance on the field that had to face the best alliance by far in the quarterfinals. Though we have achieved a lucrative "officiating technicality hat trick" of being removed from eliminations at all levels at the Virginia Regional over the last 3 years, I knew the right alliance was moving forward. Congrats to the ALL-VIRGINIA ALLIANCE of our friends on 1541, 1610, and 1262 that stood their ground on their home turf and really put on a show. Even though only two match-ups went to 3 rounds, this was the most exciting elimination bracket I have ever watched. We hope all of you can get to championships, in addition to our rookie all-stars and alliance partners and the EI winners over at Godwin High.
Sorry that 422's drive train ate itself at the end of the event, 612. Build says there is a fix on the way for when we meet again in DC, but who knows. I'm glad the judges recognized FIRST Team 422 for what it is. A great group of student's mentors, parents, sponsors, school administrators, alumni and friends that just isn't quite there yet. Rest assured, there are monumental plans in store for Team 422 on redefining what it means to have FIRST in Virginia, and it starts and ends with the team's business and outreach leader and Dean's List winner, Matt Aldridge. Some of you may have met Matt in the pits looking for contact information about working together in the offseason. That was but a small, granular sample of the legwork he puts in for 422. He is a really special kid that inspired me to continue throwing hours of my time into the bottomless pit that is working with his bustling committee. Two years ago, the business committee was a committee of 1 (myself), but Matt grabbed the beast by the horns and now more than half of 422's nearly 5 dozen students, mentors and alumni work 365 days a year meeting with corporations, community leaders, politicians, and administrators, raising money for themselves and other FRC and FLL teams, and cementing long term goals for FIRST in our city and state, and it is all because he is such an impossibly amazing person to work with. I really have a hard time putting into words the positive impact he has had on so many people, his humility, his humor, his attitude and outlook on life, that I was terrified the essay we submitted wouldn't have been good enough. I am indebted to the judges for finding Matt's story special enough to merit recognition on a regional level, and I hope his good deeds find the same recognition they deserves on a global level. |
Re: Virginia Regional 2013
Congrats to the winning alliance of 1451, 1262, and 1610. You guys made an extremely strong alliance. And 1610 still being available when you guys picked just shows how deep the quality of robots was at Virginia this year. Those finals matches were some of the best I've watched in the years I've been in FIRST. Thank you to team 3015 for selecting us for the elimination rounds and 2053 for being a great 3rd alliance partner. hope to see some of the teams that came to visit from out of state back again next year.

Re: Virginia Regional 2013
On behalf of team 2053, the TigerTronics, I would like to congratulate the winning alliance of 1451, 1262, and 1610. Thank you Ranger Robotics, team 3015 and Triple Helix, team 2363 for picking us to be on your alliance. It was an exciting end to the competition. We lost a significant amount of funding this year so we could only attend one competition. I am very glad we decided on the Virginia regional. The competition was very fun. We will most definitely return to Virginia next year!

Re: Virginia Regional 2013
What a competition! Team 612 would like to congratulate team 384 on winning their third Chairmans award in team history, and team 540 on their first Engineering inspiration award. We would also like to thank our alliance partners 422 and 4472 for a great effort in the elimination rounds.
To team 422, it's unfortunate that your drive train and shooter decided to stop working in the playoffs, but that's apart of the game. Even with a chain missing, you guys played some great defense and kept us in the game. I can't wait to see your teams robot at the DC regional when everything is working again. To team 4472, congratulations on winning the Highest Rookie Seed and Rookie All-Star awards. It's hard to believe this is your teams first year. Honestly, your team looked like veterans out there. Good luck in St. Louis, hopefully we will see your there. Finally, I have to give a shout out to one of my good friends in FIRST, James Gillespie (2068) for winning the regional Woodie Flowers award! Congratulations G, I'm glad to see you're finally being recognized for all the work you have done for team 2068 and the Virginia robotics community. |
Re: Virginia Regional 2013
Thanks to 1541 and 1262 for selecting 1610 to your alliance. We were a powerful alliance and put up some of the highest scores at the regional. 384 and 540, congrats on your Chairman's and EI. We hope to see you all again in St. Louis.
3015, 2363, and 2053: you played some awesome matches! Thanks for the great competition. Triple Helix, it has been great getting to know your team this year and we hope that our new friendship continues. And 1598, thanks for your continuous support. You've been there for us since our first regional win back in 2006. Now that all the thanks have been given, here is a little food for thought. There was a meeting at the regional about moving to the district model. I have calculated the VA rankings from the MAR model based solely on the Virginia Regional results. Please note that I did not include tiebreakers. I would be interested to hear everyone's thoughts after viewing the rankings. Code:

Re: Virginia Regional 2013
Hello, I'm from Team 2068. Last weekend, our mentor and student went down to get the Chairmans comments from the Pit Admins and they were told someone already came to pick it up. None of our students and mentors have them, so we suspect that another team may have got the wrong packet. Does any team have our packet by mistake? We really need to see those comments to improve the presentation next year. Thanks, if you can help us, please contact our coach, Mr. Gillespie, at over.prime@gmail.com

Re: Virginia Regional 2013
The Virginia Regional was an amazing event, huge thanks to all the volunteers who came together to make the event the success it was!
Team SuperNOVA, 4472, was honored to have received the Rookie All-Star, and Highest Ranked Rookie awards. In addition being picked to play in the alliance with 612 and 422 was a huge honor! A huge thanks to the Woodie Flowers Finalist - Mr. G! He along with the team members from 2068 provided an invaluable partnership this year during our rookie year, and helped get off the ground, to have such an awesome time this year! We can't wait for Worlds in St. Louis! Note: Some of our team members will be helping at the DC Regional, say hi! |
