Award winning year streaks

After a discussion among several members of different teams at the Swamp Scrimmage it was brought to my attention that my teams 7 years of winning some award a season was not as common as I thought and ranks us tied for fourth in Florida in terms of length of streak:

233 The Pink Team- 14 Years
79 Team Krunch & 180 S.P.A.M. - 11 Years
1523 M.A.R.S. & 1902 Exploding Bacon - 7 Years

So I am curious as to what teams in your states have the longest active streaks of winning an award in a season?

Re: Award winning year streaks

Well, when someone in FIRST says winning streak, I immediately think of 2056. They began in 2007 (I believe with the help of 1114), and have never lost a regional. EVER. (yes, even as rookies)

Also, I believe 340 has won Chairman's at FLR for a myriad of years now, if I remember correctly...

Re: Award winning year streaks

I do believe that 254 is on something like a 14 year streak of regional wins. I also think 103 has like 3 or 4 consecutive years of winning WFA awards; and they all happen to be at Orlando.

Re: Award winning year streaks

115, 254 and 330 have won an award every year of there's been a regional in California (14 years). Team 207 has 12 years in a row.

330 has additionally won an award at every single regional ever attended (254 has won one at all but 1 regional they ever attended).

It's hard to go past 1997 (16 years) but here are some more teams:

17 years: 16, 71, 111
16 years: 67

Re: Award winning year streaks

We are not the longest streak by far, but we have managed to win an award at every regional that we have attended since our team started in 2010. So while we are not the longest, we are doing pretty good for ourselves ;)

Team 100 has a streak of 7 years, and we've won an award each year since 1999 with the exception of 2000 and 2005.

Re: Award winning year streaks

Likewise, FRC 1912 has won at least one award at every regional it has competed at. (Starting in 2006)

We have also had at least one Dean's List Finalist at the Bayou Regional since the award has been created. One year, two of our students won, so we have 4 DLF, one of which (myself) is a DLW. Its a small streak, but I think we tie with one other team for most DLFs in FIRST, which we think is pretty neat.

While we may never have won a regional, the Robodox have won an award every year since we started in 2001.

(xraymypanda is referring to the first Sacramento regional in 2003 when we partnered with the 'Poofs... so sorry that we couldn't pull it off!)

Well, 1346 isn't around any more, but after a very rookie-ish first year, we went on to win awards in the remaining six of our seven years... not anywhere close to a Canadian record, but definitely a record for teams in Western Canada.

And we managed to do it while somehow never getting past the quarter finals.... I still haven't figured out whether I'd rather have been consistantly good, or occasionally great. (Consistantly great would have been okay, but dang that takes a lot of work.)

1266 has won an award at every regional we've attended to for the last nine years (2 regionals per year). We've also won an award that has gotten us to championships 8/9 years and have won 4 awards at the championships. Just thought I'd put that out there haha.

This is only our 4th year but we've won an award at all 4 regional attended (and sometimes more than one).

Re: Award winning year streaks

Looking at Michigan teams, Team 27, RUSH, goes back to '97 and Team 68, T3, goes back to '98. Team 217, the Thunder Chickens, goes back to '99. Team 141 and 469 go back to 2000. As previously noted, Team 67, HOT, has been going since '97.

Those seem to be the longest MI streaks. A couple well-known teams in MI have only had a single off year to break long streaks: 47/51 (2006) and 33 (2003). They would've had streaks from '96 and '99, respectively.

LeelandS 22-02-2013 03:42

Re: Award winning year streaks

Up until FLR last year, 1126 had received some kind of award or another at every regional they attended, from 2003 - 2011. So that's a 9 season award winning streak.

1311 was winless the 1st three years.

The next 6 years collected FIRST FRC awards every year, plus another collection of awards outside of FIRST>

This year is the 10th year of 1311.

We are "going to eleven".

I'd be more curious who has streaks of winning the same award each and every year. 254 has an active 14 year streak of "Regional Winner." 236 had a seven year streak of "Regional Chairman's Award" before finally being inducted into the Hall of Fame. 116 had eight years of winning a "Autodesk Visualization Award" from 2003-2010.

2056's is 14 regionals over 6 years, undefeated at the regional level. 2 CMP divisions to boot. They're shooting to extend that to 17 regionals in 7 this year.

How do we get that list updated? The Notes section for WFFA isn't completely accurate, at least for my team... we've never had a mentor named Gregory King - our 2009 winner was Kurt Aschenbeck.

That's my mistake.
Kurt is actually on there, but I mis-sorted half the 2009 winners. All the people are there and all the teams are there, but some of them are mismatched.
I have the correct list at home and I'll post it tonight.
P.S. Corrected version is now posted.

Here are the correct (hopefully) WFFAs.

This is an extremely sad truth, and probably the most significant casualty of the teacher's labour battle in Ontario. I have to admit, I'm more than a little surprised that 188 couldn't find a way to work around it as most of the other upper-tier Ontario public school teams (like 1114, 2056, 1075, 907, 2702, 772, 1334 and others) did.

I'd claim it's probably the least significant casualty. Who cares about trophies and awards and winning streaks? What of the students who missed out on a year of inspiration?

Sorry, I'll leave.

I didn't mean the streak was the significant casualty, although I can understand how you parsed it that way. I meant that the loss of 188 is nothing short of astonishing.

We win on average 3 awards per season and have since our creation in 2006, so 7 years in a row of awards. 5 of those 7 years were regional wins

Joe you are pretty amazing to either remember or find that post. yes that was me, I felt I'm sure the way Daniel does now.

I will say this, we work very hard every year to "beat ourselves" and continue to innovate. When we write our awards (they are on our website, thank you 1114 for posting yours and helping us) they are really on the focus of this year, other than our repeat events. We look good, but when I look at the CMP contenders, I know how far we have to go.

My observation is that most team do thru phases, based on the interests and talents of their students and mentors. The truely great teams manage to always do great, no matter what.

When (not if) 3337 wins RCA at the Bayou, no one will be happier than my "family". We have known their lead technical mentor and his family and many of their members for many years. We mentored them in 2010 when they won Rookie Inspiration. They are family to us.

There is a different way to view trophies / awards.

We have two major viewpoints.

1) most obviously, they recognize the work that we do and we like to do these things, award or not.

2) the use of trophies / awards / recognitions, etc as weapons.

Consider the of the theory of Sun Tzu, The Art of War, applied to cultural change goals of FIRST. Awards creates energy (chapter V) and and builds substance (chapter VI).

The 1st award we ever won was a heady experience but not really put to good use for a while. The 2nd through the nth award has been loaded into a "cultural change artillery piece" and put into action. We have been able to create a loud echo of student impact ranging across the region.

Impact is great, collecting awards is okie dokie, but using awards to leverage cultural change and a lot more impact is even better.

Getting the award is only half the battle, what you do with it is really important.

IMHO

I found the earlier post that you made heartening. Gracious Professionalism is such an odd thing - in one way you want your team to win because of their hard work. In another way, you are excited when a team you are close to wins because of their hard work.

I am proud, in many ways, that the one of the monolith teams of the Bayou comes from Louisiana. I'll be the first to say that we took more than one look at Combustion's previous entries as we were penning our own. I did the same thing when I was writing our Dean's List entry for this year. One of the things that amaze me in Combustion's writing is the ability to add so much action into it. I feel like I'm reading a movie trailer at times :-)

If and when our team proves able to win, it will only be by using the shoulders of great teams like Combustion and Fusion, and Simbotics, and so many others that we stare at with awe.

To tie it back to the overall topic at hand - teams that consistently win awards prove something to the whole FIRST community - you never get there. You never reach the point where you can stop inspiring and stop growing your team. A team streak is merely the result of a group of people who has learned to never stop being FIRST. We'll get there one day. Hopefully we will all be able to have that experience.

Re: Award winning year streaks

I may be a little biased given my history, but FRC103 has done pretty well over the years in terms of award consistency.

The "general awards streak" for FRC103, dates back to at least 1999, so 14 years at least (as others have stated the FIRST database has incomplete information prior to 2000) and counting. During those 14 years of the current streak, 103 has attended 45 official FRC events, 32 of those events being regional/district.

Of those 32 regional/district events, 103 has:
- won at least one award at 30 of them
- won two or more awards at 19 of them

Of the 12 Championship events, 103 has:
- won 7 awards, two of them in 2003

As to the post about WFFA Awards, FRC103 mentors have won 3 in total, 2 in FL:
-2004 NJ Regional Dave Beck
-2010 FL Regional Cathy Beck
-2011 FL Regional Jack Tusman

As for Sean's question of "same award" in consecutive years, for 103:
- Entrepreneurship Award 8 consecutive years
- Autodesk Visualization 5 consecutive years

You took my comment out of context. Awards are great and they have a lot of uses for outreach (said as I just got back from one of said cultural outreach events in which we leveraged a few of our shinies to catch attention). What I was remarking on was the inference that 188's streak breaking was the biggest downside to them not competing this year not awards in general. To set the record straight, I like shiny awards!

The streak ends... :(

I actually was completely unaware of this happening... I'm always so saddened when a team that I follow happens to disappear from FIRST. Especially such a low number, the Canadian regionals just won't be the same without them.

This year when it was announced that the Niles (MI) district event was being renamed and moved a bit north to St Joseph, I realized our team won the Niles event the only two times it was being held. Solidifying us as undefeated at Niles :)

I have no doubt at all that 188 will still be present this year in the form of event volunteers, and I am also certain that 188 will return for the 2014 FRC season. It is still a shame that they had their 2013 season scrapped by political unrest where students clearly got the shortest end of the stick.

The Spikes' winning streak grew a year older yesterday, when we won Gracious Professionalism by Johnson & Johnson in the Israeli regional, for the 4th time, and for the third year in a row! (2009,2011,2012,2013)

We are happy that our streak is still alive, ever since the team was started back in 2007.

What is the longest GP win you know of?

The Robodox, Team 599 have won the GP award at least once each year since 2008. The total is 11 since 2003 (including the "Sportsmanship" award in earlier years).

It is a record we are most proud of!

Congratulations Spike for their GP win in Israel and their long GP streak!

According to Mark's spreadsheet:

93 has a current streak of 8 years of Sportsmanship/GP awards going back to 2006. They have won the award 10 times total including this past weekend at Lake Superior!

(Note blue alliance shows all of these except 2006).

Also, I believe 340 has won Chairman's at FLR for a myriad of years now, if I remember correctly...

340 has won Chairman's at FLR for 7 consecutive years. This was the first year in 7 years that another team won Chairman's.

Actually Daniel, I have to offer a small correction. Despite winning Safety award 10 times over the past 7 years including twice at championships, we did not win in our rookie season (2007).

Re: Award winning year streaks

1714 is another well decorated team from Wisconsin. They have won over 30 awards in their 8 year history and have never gone a year without winning at least one award.

During this time they have won:
  • RCA x 3
  • Engineering Inspiration x 4 (includes Superior 2013)
  • WFFA x1 Mike Whitman
  • FDLFA x 1 Abby Schaefer
  • Regional Champions x 3

Among many others.

Here are some notable Safety Award winners:
  • 48 12x winner, 3 year current streak
  • 1319 11x winner 8 year current streak
  • 337 11x winner (3x CMP) 7 year current streak
  • 250 10x winner 7yr current streak

I am aware this is an old thread and one of my own but I am bumping it to ask a question:

Did any of the teams listed here have their streak end?

From Florida no; 233 went on to 15 years, 79 and 180 went on to 12, and 1902 as well as my own team went on to 8.

Canadian Team, 1305 Near North Student Robotics Initiative has qualified for the world championships every year (13 years) with either Engineering Inspiration or Chairmans. They also won a few regionals, but I can't remember how many off the top of my head.

That would be very difficult when 1305 has only existed for ten years :) (And the first year was with Rookie All-Star.)

Three years in a row, actually. 1262 didn't win any official awards in 2009 or 2010. This was the fifth time 1262 has won the Imagery Award at the Virginia [NASA/VCU] regional. 1262 has won six awards over the past three seasons at the regional, including two regional victories!
