Re: The Robonauts 118 - 2013 Video

That is amazing. Your bot is just so darned compact. A few questions:
Good grief, how much spin are you putting on the discs??
What're the extra slanted white dashed lines on your field for?
Once you're at the top of the pyramid, is it possible for you to score colored discs?

That's an ingenious method of changing the angle of the shot. Have you found the wobble to be anything of concern?

We have the pleasure of playing against this machine at least twice this year and I'm pretty sure that our jaws will be on the floor several times at both events. Mason, Justin and everyone at 118 you have out done yourselves. Are you hiding the fact that it flies and swims as well?

Full Court + 30 + super fast floor pickup + accurate from every position.

I'm hoping we get to play with you more times than we have to play against you.

Great Job, see you in a couple weeks.

I liked the game piece hand-off from Magic last year, I'm glad you guys did it again this year with Endeavour.

Also, the new robot's a really nice piece of work. As always with a 118 machine, it doesn't really fit in the 'categories' we have for all the other robots out there, and has some crazy mechanism nobody else has.

That's definitely an awesome bot. Minibotting up the corner and doing the clamp airlock maneuver around the knuckle came up in our brainstorming, but we nixed it as too complicated to pull off. Clearly that's not the case for everyone.

There are a lot of things that you can tell from the video (like the mounting points for a third CIM in their drive gearboxes). I get the feeling that those gearboxes sitting right next to the climbing wheel might be using PTO.

The 'feet' are most likely powered by some sort of worm gear, which has the added bonus of not back-driving. Can't tell exactly what motor that is, maybe a 775?

I honestly have no clue how they are able to get discs up to the shooter from their pickup, though. From what I can tell, the 'core' of the robot is electronics and I couldn't see anything much going on in there. Although, 0:10 you can see what I think is a disc queued up, right in the middle of the robot. Also, from the shots of them shooting, it looks like there is some sort of 'bucket' holding the discs that gets raised up to the shooter.

Mini-CIM on the shooter wheel, which seems to be a curved design of unknown arc-length. I saw another motor (550?) in a gearbox sticking up behind that, probably helping feed in discs.

Their drive wheels are the same custom molded urethane they used last year. Pretty neat process, lets them make a whole lot of them and colour them the way they like. Pretty grippy too.

At 0:47 a wild Talon appears.

You can also see gold (anodized?) versaplanetary gearboxes for their indexer/feeder 550 and their human feeder roller motor. I'm very interested in how they stack from their ground pickup. The aerial shot shows an empty bucket style hopper but no details of how discs go in or come out. The bucket lowers for floor collection and raises up to shoot and human load. I can't tell if they are pushing in from the bottom or top. But they pull from the bottom of the stack it looks like.

It's just amazing 13+ actuations and I'm pretty sure I missed some.

Also Justin, after watching this video 10+ times this is one of your best yet. Great job.

I have two guesses

1. They stack like we do, power a disc under a partially supported stack. It works very well for us and seems like the most space efficient.

2. They drop the tube low enough to drop them in from the top. Keeps things consistent with your human feed system but since you have to have an opening at the front bottom to shoot from, I am leaning to theory one

Another thing I've been thinking about now that I've watched the climbing segment a few times is how they might score a few coloured discs from up there. Ever throw a frisbee at a steep angle and have it come right back to you, or even land behind you? :p

I would expect that they are planing on trying to get those from the ground, they have the angle mechanism and clearly a good ability for accuracy. Plus there was already a red disc in the pyramid when they climbed. I know most people have discounted getting them from the floor, but I think tonight we've all learned, don't discount anything just yet.

nicholsjj 22-02-2013 03:11

Re: The Robonauts 118 - 2013 Video

If you look at around 1:40 you can see a bucket/turntable device that I would guess "spins" the frisbees into their shooter. Apex is the very definition of what my "dream" robot was this year. 118 was able to shoot full court, pickup from the floor, vary their shooting angle, and climb the corner. You can add on top of all that what looked like a multi-speed transmission and I think they achieved a great robot.

Well, I don't reasonably expect them to try that as a viable strategy, but it would be neat to try. It would rely too much on the discs behaving the same way aerodynamically every time, which won't happen.

I think the problem with the pyramid goal is how perfect the GDC wants the discs to be in that goal, based on the Q&A about what counts in there. I know dumper teams have had issues with stacking, and I think a shooter would have consistency issues. Just from their video, it looks like there's a pretty wide range that they hit within, and I think it's a bit wider than the window for the pyramid goal. Probably why there was just one disc in there.

Re: The Robonauts 118 - 2013 Video

So many thoughts... Where do I even begin?

First, beautiful machine. Definitely a Robonaut robot. Sleek, stylish, a little boxy, but we're all open minded, so blocks are welcome.

Secondly, SWEET HOLY MOTHER OF KAMEN. What a robot. This monster of a machine is going to be running the field in almost every match. My first inclination is to say it is perfect. Though I know nothing is perfect, I think 118 may be a top contender for being closest. It's accurate from the pyramid or the loading zone, and has a climb that's really scary, to be honest.

Third, I'm jealous. You guys have the same climbing design that we had (and rapidly pursued until last week), but couldn't figure out how to make it really work. Kudos to you guys.

And finally. Wow. Just wow. You guys rock. You guys inspire me to compete at a higher level more than any other team. I've never felt so inadequate about my own robot. 118 is amazing.

It looks like the back wheel is smaller and powered by a 775 or 550 into a VP. Also the center axes seem close to lined up so it would have to be slightly curved but that might just be the video angles.

I have to agree with Cory.
It's a beautiful robot with awesome features but last I heard making a terrific reveal video did not earn you a trip to Einstein.
118 has always made reveal video that quickened the pulse and robots that dazzled the eyes but last year was their second trip to Einstein in all of their years in FIRST(which goes to show you just how hard it is to get there). I'm sure they'll tell you more than anyone else this is just the start of the journey and we shouldn't go too overboard. 118's reveal always signaled to me that things just got real. There are teams who have been to the mountaintop who are watching the video and reading this thread, nodding their heads methodically with a sly smirk and chuckling to themselves say "Soon."

I can so see Andy Bradley and the rest of 233 doing this while watching this video.

All that AND it shoots down reconnaissance drones. [3:39] We'll miss seeing you in Hartford this year. That was last year's 'bot flipping a 'bee, upside down, to Apex at [2:45]. Also checking out the aerial view of the "bullpen" of previous machines just prior to that. We thought we were extravagant with 80/20 parts this year. Apex must have over $1k of pneumatics for this masterpiece. I'd gush some more, but I'd rather go back to another slow-motion viewing............

That video just gave me chills!!!

I wish you guys were at one of the regionals I was going to, but I'll have to wait until champs to see it up close I guess :D

And I recall a conversation where Lucien was saying something like "yeah we are still just in the "pretty good" category robot wise"... SERIOUSLY?? That statement was just blown out of the water.

Beautiful machine, I hope we all can aspire to make something this amazing some day... and now I am even more excited to see what the other elite's have come up with!!

See you guys at SVR. Should be one of (if not the best) events of the year.

Now THAT stands to be a showdown, even before you mention 233. Can't wait to see that one.

And Ed is right: With this video, things just got real. Can't wait to see it in St. Louis!

I guess when other teams say "Guys, we can't do everything, let's concentrate on a few things" Robonauts say "LOLS. Lets be baller at everything"

Quick question, how do you guys get the ceiling camera angle? Was it used the little helicopter that took a frisbee to the face?

It will be fun to play with and against Apex at the Bayou Regional. I'm just getting really excited now.

Incredible robot.

Videos like this always make me equally parts inspired and so angry I could spit. I see a machine shop and a full size field and a robot that obviously has been to the laser cutter and has a large student, mentor and support base and then I look in the closet we have at school and the beat up garage my fellow mentor has and the 10 students we can get to show up and the one regional we can afford to attend and just shake my head. I am shaking my head and angry at myself because I won't pursue the resources needed to compete at the elite level, because I choose to have a life outside robots as crazy as that sounds. LOL

118 obviously has an excellent program, incredible mentors, and enthusiastic students and I want to congratulate them on what appears to be one of the "elite" bots for the year. We all work incredibly hard for 6 weeks, and we are all proud of the robots we can field given our resources, and then we all take inspiration from the teams with more resources. Thanks for the inspiration 118 and I can't wait to see this bot in person at the Bayou.

This video actually makes me feel better about our odds. If even the Robonauts aren't hitting 4/4 volleys, maybe we have a shot after all.

nice.. no less than expected from the elite teams..

I knew it was possible to do everything just not in this compact a size.. very nice mechanism, I am interested to see the guts of this bot.

But I expect this to be a force through St. Louis, one thing I have learned is nothing is a guarantee but this is about as close as you can get to that.

Justin and team - good luck guys am psyched for you, and am glad last years Einstein debacle didnt bring the team down, i hope you guys make it there again this year.

The engineering side of me said... This is amazing... Have this done in 6 weeks is just incredible.

The competitor side of me said... I wonder how another alliance can slow it down and score more points than they do. The competition is 3-on-3. What are your thoughts?

Seriously, just jaw dropping.

I do have one question for the group.

When your mechanism tilts your robot to grab onto the corner pole aren't your bumpers going out of the zone, does the pole make that point moot? Have you asked GDC?

I guess that's three questions :)

Alex.q 22-02-2013 09:15

Re: The Robonauts 118 - 2013 Video

How is it driving up the pole? It looks like two wheels slightly pointed toward each other, with a notch to go over the crossbars, but I couldn't tell.

While I'm sure that they've taken this into account, it'd be a shame to see another excellent 118 designed tossed out.

There were teams that did this last year to get on the bridge, are the bumper zone rules different than last year?

I love the notch in the climbing wheel to get over the corner...

Hope I get to see this thing up close in St. Louis this year.

Don't they just have to touch the corner with the climbing wheel before tilting back?

Excellent robot, I'll be glued to the webcasts!

Bumper rules are all relative to your robot sitting on a flat floor.

Also, can the uploaded make the video available on mobile? I'd love to show people this on my phone

Simply outstanding. I love it when teams are able to pull off what conventional thinking has defined as "impossible". (Think 71-2001, 71-2002, 469-2010)

Unrelated, a huge amount respect goes out to your videographers, that was some beautiful cinematography. (Also, the take down of the helicopter was almost as good as the robot flying through the alliance station in 2010)

On a side note about the little helicopter getting picked off : I think IRI has found their new add on! Any team that picks off the little golden helicopter during a match get 50 extra points! It's like the Golden Snitch for a FIRST competiton!

Now that's a cool idea.

Also: I'm disappointed... The shooting runner lights that track the frisbee would be even cooler if they were tri-color and identified the color of the frisbee passing through.
