Team 836 Presents a new FRC Scouting App

Hello everyone. I know that it's getting close to competition. Week 1 practice matches start in just a couple days. I have been working on an Android application for Scouting during FRC events for the last year, and have finally gotten it to a point where I'm willing to release it to the masses.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...stems.scouting

The app is built for use on 3G/4G devices, as it requires internet access. I'm considering adding an offline mode and bluetooth connectivity in later updates. It also requires connectivity with a server that your team sets up. The server-side implementation only requires LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) and can be set up on the same server that hosts your team website in most cases.

The server source and database structure can be downloaded here: http://robobees.org/android/FRC_Scouting_Server.zip

The app should be fully functional, and it's been tested on a few devices of team members. We used an early version of it last year to great effect, and a lot of the feedback from our team members has been implemented in the current edition.

Feedback is much appreciated. I hope this helps the rest of you as much as it helped us last year!

We have also built a scouting dashboard for use in analyzing the data generated by the FRC Scouting App. The dashboard uses an advanced data analysis engine. You can download the dashboard here: http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/papers/2790

Please let us know if you have any questions or comments.

Thanks!

In the past, we used something similar. Only we had an Access database instead of Excel. We found that There were a lot of errors inherent in both the data logging, and the transfer to the database. We also found that the students really did not like to have to write all of the data down on paper (I was one of them at the time).

The app solves some of these problems. It minimizes error of data logging by making it easier, there is no error transferring that data to the database, and We've found that the students actually enjoy using it. I've had students ask me if they could be scouts, rather than groan when we tell them they need to. The app even gives the students access to some data analysis on the data they've collected themselves.

You are, however, on the right track.

thanks for the review! and i wish i could put my team to a completely digital set up but i have one massive problem with it .....all they would do is sit around play starcraft on their computers instead of scout ( i know this due to past years of experience) hence why the system is designed to only have one person inputting data into the computer.
