FRC Spyder 2013

Judging by the downloads so far, many of you have already discovered that FRC Spyder has been updated for the 2013 season for iOS and Android devices. For those who have used it in the past, make sure to download the latest update for your device to get support for 2013. For those who have not used it before, FRC Spyder makes it easy to keep track of match results and rankings for FRC events.

In addition, the app allows you to subscribe to your favorite teams to receive nearly instant score alerts using push notifications. Just find your desired teams in the team list and use the menu button followed by "Receive Live Updates" on iOS or by holding down on the team and selecting "Add score notices" on Android. This feature is especially handy for family and friends to follow along with your team's progress if they can't attend your event in person.

Download FRC Spyder for Android from the Google Play Store and for iOS from the iOS App Store. We hope you enjoy using it!

Thanks again for providing one of the most useful apps during the competition season. It has been incredibly useful in years past and I expect it to be that way again this year!

This is my first FRC season with a smartphone, and I was always disappointed to not be able to use this app. Awesome app. Thank you for dedicating your time to this app

And I think issues with how the app displays on a tablet was brought up in an previous topic, but I'm on my Nexus 7 right now and it looks perfect. I'm excited to use this.

I didn't actually fix anything for the Nexus 7 layout. I re-read the post mentioning the layout problem last week, tested it on my wife's Nexus 7, and it worked fine for me. If you see anything that doesn't look right, let me know.

I'm still having the same exact issue I posted about previously. Not sure why this Nexus 7 in particular is having the layout problem, but it is..

Why did you feel the need to share that particular preference with us? It's not like Dave is ignoring other devices.

I seem to be getting funny matches on mine where i get the same team twice on one alliance.

Edit: sorry... Iphone 5, downloaded the app today.

Indeed, I just noticed that myself. Unfortunately it's in the iOS app code, not on the server, so fixing it will require another trip through the App Store review process (which means you won't see a fix this weekend since reviews typically take about a week). Sorry everyone :( That's what I get for trying to rush out an update for 2013.

Re: FRC Spyder 2013

I'm seeing the same behavior on my iPhone as Don. Comparing match results with FIRST's page for the regionals, the scores are correct. However, using BAE's Q1 as an example:

Spyder:
R: 1973 1519 1519 S: 33
B: 1512 78 95 S: 67

FIRST's page:
R: 1973 1519 1922 S: 33
B: 1512 78 95 S: 67

So, the scores are correct, but every red alliance for every regional has the same issue in the match results - the second team is also listed as the third team.

Didn't Spyder used to give you a message when one of your "Favorite" teams posted a score?

Also, (sorry if I'm way off base for feature requests) it would be cool if you view an event, and then look at the teams...and then you see a team you want to follow to click them to see their match schedule and then be able to press the "Menu" button and have the option to "Add To Favorites"...

Sorry if this has been requested before or discussed...

You have to set them for scoring notifications instead of just "favorite".

In favorites, you can select for notifications as well. Hold down on the team, and it will ask if you want score notifications.

If you're on an iOS device, find the team you're interested in from Teams in the main menu, tap on the team, then tap on the Menu button and choose "Receive Live Updates".

Agreed. I was already planning to add this to the next version.

Apparently it's fairly trivial to port Android apps over to BB10. They both use similar Java frameworks.

And according to what I've heard from the people who've gotten evaluation phones, it's actually not a bad OS.

No, sorry.

Doing a Windows Phone version would mean rewriting the app from scratch again (since none of the code from the Android or iOS versions would be reusable) and to be honest we just barely have enough time to keep the existing versions updated each year. Plus, none of us involved use or have interest in Windows Phone.

Maybe someday the mobile app landscape will be such that it doesn't require apps to be rewritten 4 times to support everything (iOS, Android, Blackberry and Windows Phone). Until then, don't be surprised to see developers targeting the one or two most popular platforms and ignoring the rest.

Trivial != no effort. As Dave said, we're all way too busy with work, VEX, and family to dedicate much time to this. Plus we don't have any devices to test on.

I got to play with Karthik's new BB a few weeks ago and I agree, the OS looks good. Not good enough to save the company IMHO, but good :)

Well on my Caso G'Zone Commando that's been dropped off buildings and had a brush with acid it works wonderful. I was able to keep up to speed on my team's progress at Palmetto while working Friday and working with FTC on Saturday.

Thanks. No complaints about it.

A bug: Using Motorola Razr Maxx, over Verizon network.
Any match result with a score over 100 (i.e. three digits long) just shows the first two digits.

Still a fantastic app, still goes in first place on my home page, we are all still mightily indebted to you.

Any thought to add a contribute button, for those of us able and willing to help you/a favorite charity?

Re: FRC Spyder 2013

FRC Spyder is one of my favorite apps. I loved it last year.

So you can imagine my horror when I downloaded the 2013 update and it stopped working. Every time I open it now, I get a black screen for a while, and then this:

"The application FRC Spyder (process com.dwabtech.frcspyder) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again."

And of course, trying again doesn't help at all.

Is my Samsung Galaxy S (not II or III, just S) already too old (Android firmware: 2.1-update1, and kernel: 2.6.29) and incompatible for some reason? Is there any chance to fix this? I'd love to get the app working again.

But I totally understand that you all are very busy, and may not have an answer. I just thought I'd let you know. Thanks so much!

Just got the update today that fixes the Red 3 bug (that got confusing at Palmetto!)

One idea that hit me today: When subscribing to a team, would it be possible to give an upcoming match alert? Even just triggering the alert for Q8 after Q(8-offset)'s score is posted would give us time to switch webcasts or run walk briskly to the field.

Re: FRC Spyder 2013

Everything works great except in the team list and rankings pages for any event, no teams numbered over 4000 show up(using Samsung Stratosphere, Android 2.3.6). The rankings are also somehow still having the correct number of teams, it appears those 4000's teams are being replaced by others. Results, schedule etc. are all correct.

Your old version is still supported, but due to a dumb mistake on my part coupled with me not having the time to test on an old device before I released it, the bug got out. It's an easy fix and I'll release an update tonight so you should be ready for this weekend's matches.

There was a problem with the team list on our server for the first day or two that the app was available. My guess is you grabbed the app early & got the bad list that's missing some teams. If you go to the main screen and do an update from there, you should get the full team list. Let me know if that doesn't fix it.

I'm having problems with the app claiming that I'm subscribed to too many teams, but I can't find which teams I'm subscribed to (I'm fairly sure I'm not subscribed to any, considering I don't get any notifications). Anybody have a solution?

Re: FRC Spyder 2013

I figured out the text formatting problem - I have "large text" enabled in accessibility options (anyone who knows me understands why). It's not a huge deal to simply disable it, but I would love to have the text formatted correctly and be able to read it at the same time.

Also, is there a way for you or us to manually update Gull Lake? With no fms data from Saturday, it's stuck at qualification match 56. With the event over, it's (again) not a big deal, but it'd be nice.

P.S. I hope you know I only bother you with these things because there's no other service worth bothering with. FRC Spyder is the best. Thank you!

Oh, so you mean like FRC Megaphone?

Set up your team/your favorite teams, and it'll text you before the matches and/or when the match has been scored.

His idea would be data-based, rather than text-based. Some people end up with more spare data than spare texts.

This app is simply fantastic. It's become a staple on my team to just ask someone in the stands, "Check Spyder for our next match." I doubt our lead scouters could live without it. :)
