Robot Falls From Pyramid

With the competition season now in session, who has had their robot fall off the pyramid while climbing? From the Palmetto webcast, it seems like the first qualification match already bore witness to a fall by Team 88 (as well as a 30 point hang by Team 836). If you've fallen, from what level, and how bad was the damage?

Wow you got on that fast. I was also watching that webcast.

My computer froze right before this happened D: I hope the robot is ok!

Ours fell once in our build space, from the second level. Fortunately, we were belaying it the entire way up and were able to catch it! The issue that caused the fall has since been corrected :)

3196-Spork also went down in Palmetto.

Our robot fell in match 1 at Palmetto. When we saw we were scheduled for match 1 we knew we were going to get a FiRST first: climb or fall. Obviously "fall" was second choice.

No damage so we'll try again next match.

Yup, slight tumble, no damage

It seems like 4451 just fell from the top of the pyramid (30 points) in the Semifinals of Palmetto while trying to dump their colored disks into the pyramid goal. Anyone know how bad the damage was?

Must not have been bad. They got right back in after a quick fix. Such a solid rookie!!!

Bomb Squad fell in Hub City, Semis Set 2 Match 1.
They fell from just over the first bar, tipped over and landed on their shooter.

A day before bag and tag our robot fell from a 3rd level climb, and surprisingly it was really resilient to the fall. Everything still worked and ran and we shot 18 autonomous points 5 minutes after. We had a belt break when we were trying to dump Frisbees in the pyramid goal, so we are pretty proud of our robot for making it through an 11 foot fall with negligible damage.

We fell from the first bar at Traverse City. No damage. No climb either...

1831 the screaming eagles fell from about the 2nd or 3rd bar earlier today I believe. I'm not honestly sure if they played in their next match or not.

We immediately went to the pits and assessed our problems. Lucky our back bumper took most of the impact, but it wasn't a pretty sight to fall eight feet! There wasn't any damage done, but Fat Rat was not pleased that we dropped him. We received tons of support from our own teammates in our finals Alliance (3490 and 1539) and also from the opposing Alliance of the match (11, 245 and 2187) who offered their Alliance time out and all the mechanical support they could provide if we needed it. So after the tweaks, we were able to successfully climb to hang for a 30 pointer in our second elimination match. We didn't win but our robot is now at 100% and ready to go to the Orlando Regional.

Thank You for everyone's concerns!!! And thank you to all the teams that reached out to us in our first FIRST competition as rookies today.

That was absolutely gut wrenching to see. Was relieved to see you guys come back in the following match. Congrats on getting the Rookie All-Star award!

This is a huge reason I love FIRST. I'm curious -- did you use the 11/245/2187 time out? In theory, they're not allowed to do that (rule T19), although it'd be hard to find a robot in a finals that doesn't need repair.

Which brings up an interesting question -- does the end justify the means? Is it OK to lie about (or exaggerate) a problem on your own bot so that you can illegally (but graciously) give the other alliance time to fix theirs? :)

Last year at Battlecry our number 11 seed alliance (Battlecry does a 16 alliance tournament) made it all the way to the finals to meet the heavily favored 1 seed alliance. However, that alliance had one broken robot and no timeouts remaining. Our alliance went to the head ref and asked if we could use our time out for them, and the ref replied that since it was in the spirit of FIRST, he would allow it. One of my favorite moments of being a part of FIRST, hopefully more teams will try to do this if/when teams fall from the pyramid.

We had not used our Alliance's time out yet and so we used our own, but 11/245/2187 made it clear that if we needed 6 more minutes, in the spirit of FIRST, the were glad to provide.
I also love FIRST now! It's amazing to experience such comradery with EVERY team. As a former football player(last season was my last) I've never felt so much joy from helping and being helped by teams we've competed against. Thank you Dean and Woody for creating this environment in hopes to make the world a Better place.

Re: Robot Falls From Pyramid

The tournament section rules don't allow back-to-back time-outs. You can't have 12 minutes of time. The rules also say that you can't "give" your time-out to another alliance.

But there's nothing that prevents an alliance from taking a time-out for any reason. If it so happens that your alliance doesn't need as much work as the other does, so what?

Getting a little extra charge in the batteries is a pretty good reason, right? :p And if you happen to be helping out your opponents, so much the better.

I do believe that 4206 has a video of team 16 falling. Let's just say a bit of tough defense caused a couple problems later on for team 16's climber. Our apologies.

It was our last match anyways, but our bot is just fine. Almost no damage taken actually, pretty surprising.

Great to hear that. I was standing in the queue and it looked like a a hard hit.

We were planning on putting on our 30-point climber for our second regional, but after seeing 1831 and 3360's falls, we're probably just going to leave on our 10-pointer.

Honestly i think that we did more damage to the carpet than our robot. We only had 1 dent and our drive train got a little out of square but we fixed everything in 20 minutes.

Our climber was in pristine condition at the time of the quarter, semi, and final rounds at the Hub City Regional with just some minor scratches. The two screws used for climbing are made of steel, and no damage was done during Qualification match 70 of which I believe you are referring to. The failures were completely at the fault of me, the operator, as the first set of hooks was not properly hooked when I controlled the climber to proceed to extend to the second level.

Team 16 wishes you the best of luck at the Dallas (East or West?) Regional! :)
