2013 St. Louis Regional

Looks like it's time to start getting excited for the St. Louis regional. So who all is going this year? Any newcomers?

1444 will be there in force, as usual. We are excited to try out our Kinect target tracking system. Anyone interested in that should stop by, we'll be happy to talk about it. :D

Ballsy call. 1985, 1208, and 931 probably have other ideas.

GKC and STL are on the same weekend this year, so there is not the usual cross-state attendance.

I'm sorry to not be going to STL this year. It's a fun tournament with some great teams; well-run and in a nice facility. We've made some good friends on the far side of the state; it's too bad GKC is the same week this year. And I'll miss working with Rich & the rest of your fantastic inspecting crew.

And, I'll be missing the best volunteer food in FRC. :ahh:

Good luck to everybody, and have a great week.

Basically...there are lot of powerhouse teams at SLR, just like every year. Even though SLR isn't one of the bigger regionals, it always delivers some good competition.

And 3885 wants to shock some teams before they can "call" the win. :p I am excited to see the many different drive systems in Saint Louis this year. So far I have seen kiwi 3397, swerve 1444, mecannum 1208, 4 wheel KOP 3862, and 6 wheel pneumatic 3885. I have a feeling that Saint Louis should be fairly close this year.

Ha. I'm just making that call because I mentored one of the students on their team. :p It'll be a tough competition, and there'll be great matches to watch.

I hope we can get our swerve steering working like we want. We will probably spend most of Thursday working on that. Should be pretty sweet if we get it right.

I think that the competition here will be interesting this year (then again, isn't it always?).
I was hoping that this year our team would finally be able to go to the team social, however our school musical overlaps the competition this year so we'll be scurrying out of Chaifetz to get back to school as soon as possible. >_>

We don't really have any pictures, so you'll just have to come see our bot in person this weekend. :)

We didn't have the advantages of a mocked practice field or the large build space we have had for the past two years this year, so we're really looking forward to this weekend so that we can see how well we can play this year's game.

See you all later this week!

Oh, and if any teams need any help with programming (LabVIEW) or anything else, you're welcome stop by our pit, we'll be more than willing to help.

I'm the Chief Electrical Officer for Team 1208, and we've definitely packed away enough parts to build an entirely new electrical board, complete with spare cRIO and modules. From the looks of our mechanical bins, we could probably build an entirely new robot.
If anyone forgets a part or needs to borrow a spare, I'm sure one of the teams in our area can provide an extra and would be more than happy to do so.
Also, if they arrange the pits like they did last year, the oldest veteran teams should be directly across from the newest rookie teams, so make sure to visit your neighbors.:)

I am very interested in your Kinect Vision system. Team 1706 has used it this year and last year, winning excellence in engineering at Queen City last year. What information do you get from it, location of target? distance? pitch, roll, yaw? Better watch out, 1706's vision system is very competitive, I would say it is the best, but that has bias. We are 9 for 10 from the feeder station and can drive anywhere an shoot and score for the 3 pt, also we track the pyramid and it gives us distance. 2 more days!

We haven't actually used ours on the robot yet, but I have done extensive field testing with it. Obviously we get target location and distance and we have the math worked out for pitch, roll, and yaw. We only use pitch and yaw, though. (Roll probably isn't the best way to describe the third angle we calculate..."field angle" may be better haha). It can also track targets that are blocked by up to 50%, which is handy.

We have our shooter calibrated with the vision solutions. It is so beautiful to see all my hard work pay off (5+ hours a day in the cafeteria programming alone with a kinect and a piece of lexan with a 1 to 8 scale alliance wall target)

First off, I would like to thanks your team. We played with you in two practice matches, and you allowed to test our arm height vs. Your full court shooting. We had a great time playing with you, and we learned a whole lot.

Asides from that, the rest of our practice day went pretty well. We got through inspection easily and put a higher torque gearbox on our arm. So overall, I would say it was a good day.

Re: 2013 St. Louis Regional

Well STL was hit with field communication issues today. A few matches had to be rerun which set us back about an hour.

1444 was in one of the failed matches, so of course they came by to see if we were using too much bandwidth. We aren't, but we are one of the few teams (so far) to have severe problems with the recent C++ update and fix them. So I ended up talking with the FIRST engineers in New Hampshire to help figure out the issue. Turns out one team did not have the update, so we helped them through it and fortunately they had no issues. Communications seemed to be fixed for now. Made for a hectic day...

Congrats to the teams that won awards today! You were all very deserving, IMO.

^This, I believe that the judges have nailed the awards so far this year. A big Congrats belongs to Charlie Blair for Team 931. His humbleness, dedication, and passion for mentoring and teaching his students is well deserving of the WFA. The emotion on Charlie's face when he accepted the award showed how much he loves FIRST and his students. I know that moment brought some tears to my eyes then and now.

Those who have worked with you at events and on teams know that your passion for teaching, challenging, and inspiring students drives you to absurd extremes of energy and commitment. This award is well deserved and long overdue.

Re: 2013 St. Louis Regional

Wow what a regional this year at Saint Louis. This year's regional had the best atmosphere of any FRC event that I have ever attended. The matches were very exciting and the spirit in the stands was fantastic. Here are a few shout outs.

To team 3862: Wow what a season this year. It was amazing seeing both area teams advancing into the elimination rounds. Your team and alliance played a great three matches against us in the quarters. I am so proud of what the Iron Scorpions were able to accomplish and overcome this season.

To team 1658: Thank you for making us you first pick. We were very surprised to be picked that high from the 28 seed. It was a shame that your potentiometer fried before eliminations or else the finals might have been a bit different. You guys were a great alliance captain and I look forward to competing with you in the future.

To team 2978: You all were a steal as a second round pick. You auto helped put up some major points and you played fantastic defense throughout eliminations. Your team played hard until the end even giving up your bucket for the alliance.

To team 3284: How your team fell to the 6 seeded alliance captain is beyond me. Your drive train was the strongest at Saint Louis this year and your movable net design will make you a force at championships. Congrats on the championship win.

To team 1706: All I could say when I saw this machine was wow. The Kinect targeting system that your team had was fantastic. Your team's robot level is something our team will strive for going forward into the future.

To team 1208: First of all how could you guys fall to 3284 as their first pick. Your robot was to good for that. The level that the MeTool Brigade has achieved throughout it's team's history is fantastic. Your team had not only an awesome robot, but also a fantastic program. Your Regional Chairman's Award is long overdue and I hope that someday our team can emulate the success that MeTool has displayed in their years of FRC.

Thanks to 1288 and 1706 for choosing us in the finals. We had a great time playing with you guys and made it further than we ever thought we would. The finals were very exciting (albeit extremely stressful) this year.

Also thanks to 1706 for the buck-boost converter that helped solve the power problems with our Kinect.

And a huge thanks to our sister team, 4329, for your support throughout the whole competition and especially during the finals.

Congratulations to our friends 3284, 1208 and 2408 for their regional win, and an extra congratulations to 1208 for their overdue Chairman's Award. Good luck to all of you at Championships.

Also congratulations to 2783 for winning the Engineering Inspiration award, we'll see you guys later at Queen City, and good luck at Championships.

And to our partners 3411 and 4330, it was a pleasure having worked with you both and making it to the semi-finals. Good luck at your upcoming regionals.

We'd also like to thank everyone who came and offered us help after our "durability test" Thursday. We're fortunate enough that our head mentor was able to teleport from Australia earlier that morning, otherwise, we probably would have been done for the weekend.

FIRST of all, thank you for the regional everyone, it was a great time with some great teams. Being that we are now done with our season, we are thinking ahead.

My teammates and I are interested in hosting an off season event at our high school. We are 20 minutes outside of St. Louis and were wondering:
1: Thoughts?
2: What teams may be interested?

We are shocked there is not currently one and would like area teams to have a little more fun.

Great robot, robohawks. You were a good team this year as always. I am sad that 4246 wasn't given the opportunity to alliance with you.

That sounds like a great idea and I think a lot of area teams including my own would greatly appreciate an off season event being close to home.
But something to consider about it is timing since there is an off season event in Kansas city (Cowtown) that occurs around November.

And thanks, we strive to do our best. I do recall one match (my favorite) when we tied against your team 1208 and 3284 during qualifications. Maybe next year we'll get to partner with you

1444 would definitely be interested. There are a number of students on our team looking to increase our off season activity and would love to help setup an event.

This is great to hear. A teammate and I yesterday ran some numbers and we would have to have atleast 15 teams (not including our own) to cover costs and make it worth the organizational nightmare it will be. Our facilities can hold about 45 teams comfortably, but being a 1st time event done by a 2nd year team we really doubt that many people would be interested. Would it be best in the 3 day regional format? 2 days no practice? Or a format of our own where you are allianced with everyone at some point in time? This will take a lot of planning and convincing to achieve a off season event, but we are very interested in doing so.

At the WMRI we host we use a one day format for 24 teams. I would not recommend more than two days, remember this is an off season event not a serious competition, although IRI can get intense.

We were thinking a two day event. The biggest issue will be food for us. We aren't too sure where to go as far as that is concerned. Our cafeteria won't work, and we aren't sure if we have the man power to grill burgers out back or anything like that.

You should contact Team Driven (1730) and ask about organizing the Cow Town ThrowDown. There's a "Contact us" link on the web page -- http://cttd-robotics.com/ They've been doing this with Cerner for years now & should have a lot of good tips. It's been so successful, in fact, that we've out-grown Cerner's facilities & had to move the event to the Lee's Summit high school last year.

Just, PLEASE, make sure you don't put it too close to Cow Town. We'd really miss having all of the St. Louis-area teams come over; especially since this year we didn't see each other at one (or both) of the Missouri regionals.

We will definitely ask them! And we don't see date being an issue. Our school is large on athletics so our gym is always packed. We were thing around July. Would teams from your area be interested in comming?

The level that the MeTool Brigade has achieved throughout it's team's history is fantastic. Your team had not only an awesome robot, but also a fantastic program. Your Regional Chairman's Award is long overdue and I hope that someday our team can emulate the success that MeTool has displayed in their years of FRC.

Thank you for your kind words. It was a magical weekend for us. We are very grateful that 3284 did their homework and picked us. Drafting team 2408 was also a great move. The regional was very well run; everybody did a fabulous job!

Oh yeah, one week late.
STL this year was epic. Truly epic.

One big thanks to 1658, you guys made our weekend. For those of you who do not know, our alliances would more often want us on defense than on "feeding" them, so we did not get a chance to test actual feeding of a robot until our last match on Saturday, in which 1658 allowed us to feed them disks. It worked great, and even though we did not make eliminations, we left the regional satisfied, because we built a bot that could do exactly what we wanted it to do. 1658 helped us prove that, and we have much gratitude towards them.

Big congrats to all of the winners, and especially 1208, for their long overdue Chairman's award. These were the best eliminations I have ever seen at STL, hands down.

Also, a big shout out to our friends from 4330 and 4500. Our schools may not get along through regular sporting events, but it rocked hanging out with you guys while watching eliminations. I can't wait to compete with you both in the future!
