I was disappointed to look and see that the team that posted this shirt was NOT team 1984 (is there an active team 1984? **EDIT: Raider Revolution Robotics out of Kansas). Is this a different cultural reference that I'm not getting?

Winston Smith is the name of SPAM's unofficial penguin mascot. He is has been a part of the drive team for many years now. When he was first adopted as the mascot, all that could be found on him was a tag that read "1984," and so he was named Winston Smith. Last year he was on hiatus, so we are celebrating his return with the shirt.

That is an awesome mascot. Kind of embarrassed to say, though, I've been on 1592 since 2007 and yet I have never heard of your penguin mascot.

For you younger folk out there, "1984" is the title of a 1949 novel by George Orwell (Eric Arthur Blair). Winston Smith is the protagonist.
