Climbing in the Pit

Our team has built a quarter pyramid and we are considering bringing it to our regionals for our team and others to debug the climber. I know there have been posts about not shooting in the pit, which is not specifically said in the manual, so I am hoping that someone with a safety role could give their opinion on this. Thanks!

Follow the same rules you would at home, including a tether and I wouldn't see an issue.
I would think that no one else should be working in the pit while climbing though.

You may be much better off finding a secluded part of the venue and setting it up there.

Check with your event - there may be a practice field there which may consist of a pyramid...

Maybe you could add it to the practice field? There always seems to be a long line for the practice field, so having two pyramids would help if the event coordinators think there would be enough room.

The only feasible option is to add it to the practice field but then you still have to deal with having trained volunteers and resources to run it.

Definitely don't try it in your pit or without the approval of the planning committee.

I'm not sure how your quarter pyramid is constructed, but ours is quite large and would certainly occupy most of the pit. If an accident happened while climbing, it would put anyone in our pit or an adjacent one at risk, there isn't enough room to safely stand back.

I am going to bet that climbing in your pit is not going to be the safest thing you could do. Stick with the practice field and prevent damage to your neighbors in the pit.

I'd say just go to the practice field. It could be fairly dangerous to climb in your pit, besides there might not be enough room.

Thanks for the input. We decided not to bring it. We think the extra pit area will be more useful. I'll look into asking if they could use it at the practice field though!

At finger lakes a team had a quarter pyramid in the pits and nobody had a problem with it. it was simply in the middle of their pits, usually where teams' robots would sit.

Re: Climbing in the Pit

Remember no 2 venues are alike and all it takes is one complaint and the pyramid will have to come down. Strongly do not advise setting it up in your teams pit. If the practice field is run properly and by volunteers who know how to work it the lines won't be as long and everyone can cooperatively use the tower.

Check with the regional, they may have space available to set it up outside your pit.
