548 Waterford Scouting Report

https://docs.google.com/file/d/0Bz7y...it?usp=sharing

Google site which will allow you to view the Robostangs scouting reports from the Michigan Waterford District event.

Note that there might be some errors in it as this data was taken of each individual robot performance for as many matches as we could watch. The data was also entered into the computer so errors do creep up now and then.

Enjoy as these are stats on how each robot did; not a group score like most report.

Very nice looking scouting report.

How does your team scout each of the matches?

Thanks,

Norman

Re: 548 Waterford Scouting Report

We use 6 students who watch one and only one robot each match. They record the key information down on common scouting sheet. Then we have a runner who takes each match information and runs it to one other student who enters the data in an excel spreadsheet.

We built on a sheet that was being handed out by Team Rush a couple of years ago but have enhanced it with pictures, trend charts, quick and easy one button match sheets for all alliance members and opponents.

Then we created an elimination set for an easy report which we print a copy of each team stats through out the qualification matches and align them by the selected alliances.

We posted data on the walls at the Grand Blanc district this last weekend and we had many teams come and look at them.

I've been mentoring scouting and strategy for FIRST for 7 years and this is the best I have found for a team that is large enough to do it. It cannot be accomplished with a small team unless they are very dedicated and some parents help out.

Thanks for the reply.
Would you care to share the scouting reports/documents you reference above?

We are always looking to see if there is a better way for us to scout. This is an area I firmly believe in (being an ex basketball coach). We struggle to get what we would like with the numbers of kids we take to a regional.

Thanks,

I am guessing you will be able to find it here:

Re: 548 Waterford Scouting Report

Yes it was based off of the Rush database but much enhancements have been made. It now has a way to automatically add pictures for the robot. It also adds a trend chart.

Other enhancements are:
1) Match groupings - prints out your alliances and opponents in one click
2) Prints out all 24 championship matches in order, with the alliance number on them, and the elimination brackets in one click
3) Prints just the trend charts for the robots in one click.

The challenge of these enhancements is that it is only structured for 40 teams at this time (typical size of a Michigan District). It needs to be updated for the Michigan State District which will have over 60 teams and then hopefully again for Nationals for about 80 teams!

I should be able to share it once we restructure it for the State Championships.

Re: 548 Waterford Scouting Report

I would just post raw data up for everyone to see, not your actual scouting data. As seen at Grand Blanc, Your scouting data was not accurate for most of the teams I looked at. To improve this just post OPR, CCWM, and Pit Scouting info. It would be more constant with the robot's actual abilities. This would be much more helpful to us, and other teams.

Thanks,

Norman, I developed the scouting database for Team RUSH and have been evolving it since, and we have using it successfully for the past couple of years. Feel free to PM me with any questions and I can either help you create a database of your own or let you use a simplified version of ours for the current year.

As Mentor548 said, it works best to have a total of 7-8 people scout and enter data manually. Our current system uses iPads with an app built by our students to collect the robot data, export it as a .CSV, transfer it to our scouting laptop, and automatically enter the data correctly. However, the same can be done by entering the data manually using paper scouting sheets.

Thanks for referring to our Toolkit! Our "Students at Competition" chapter does go into the importance of scouting and some high level methodology, but doesn't contain the database.

In my experience, solely having OPR/CCWM and Pit scouting does not provide the complete picture that can be gained by watching matches - as long as the data gathered is accurate. Analysis will always only be as good as the data it is based upon.

I'm saying scout for everything but just make the OPR, CCWM, and Pit Scouting for the public.

I cleaned up the excel file for scouting (based off of Team 27) but a few enhancements. I will try to attach it/post it.

too big so here is the link..

Re: 548 Waterford Scouting Report

Please note that you need to unhide all of the tabs in the excel document for the auto print macros to work. Sorry about that.
