Shipping batteries by air without using the crate?
 

A friend of mine is having some trouble working out how they're going to get their batteries to Worlds. FIRST says that in order to ship your batteries in the crate you have to have the original packaging, which unfortunately, they don't have anymore. Does anyone know if there are any other methods that they could use by air?

You absolutely can ship the type of battery that first uses by air, you just have to label it properly. Using the original packaging is not mandatory, but there are requirements the packaging needs to meet. For example it must be labeled nonspillable battery.

I suggest researching this on the DOT website.

In 2010 I flew two batteries in a box made of birch plywood with a handle and had it clearly labeled on the outside. It drew the attention of the airline to such an extent that I heard my name called over the airport loudspeaker, and was greeted by the pilot himself when I arrived at the gate. After explaining exactly what it was, and that the batteries were identical to those used in wheelchairs, it was allowed to fly. In 2008, I flew several batteries to Hawaii packed well inside plastic crates with tools and whatnot. Not even a second look. It seems to be rather hit or miss. In any case, make sure you insulate them well. If a robot battery were to set fire to a commercial airline, that would be the last of anyone ever flying those.
