Re: What does your team do during the off-season?
We have a robotics class so we are building and programming new robots all the time. I think we have built over 20 FRC style bots. Other than that we spend are time playing with arduinos and trying to get are cnc machines to work.

Depending on what counts as "off-season" and where "pre-season" starts:
Relay For Life. IRI. (We don't just attend; we actually do IRI as one of the host teams.) Open shop sessions for personal projects. Occasional picnics in the park. C.A.G.E. An annual corn maze outing. Recruiting and training. Kokomo's New Years Eve ball drop. |
Re: What does your team do during the off-season?
What is this "off...season" you speak of? ;) We do a ton of stuff. Our main things are BunnyBots, Girl's Generation, and FIRSTFare. BunnyBots is a full-on mini build season, with its own robots, games, and rules (they are very similar to regular season rules, just toned down a bit). Girl's Generation is an event where girls fill all the technical roles on the team, and boys run the event (historically during the regular season it's been the other way around, so this is a good chance to switch things up a little). FIRSTFare is a conference about anything and everything FIRST, including strategy, competitive analysis, software, electrical, fundraising, etc. etc. Head on over to http://team1540.org/infirst to check all of it out, and message me or send us an email if you're interested in getting BunnyBots or Girl's Gen in your area.

This year, Team 701 will be building a scouting robot for the local police department so they can check potentially dangerous places for risky suspects before entering said place in order to lessen the possibility of being injured or even killed on duty. Does that count? :D

Re: What does your team do during the off-season?
Our big thing is setting up the SCRIW competition we co-host with 1293. (Shameless plug: You're not that far off!)
We also are planning to construct a pair of smaller, Vex-controlled robots for demos and practicing some new fabrication techniques. |
Re: What does your team do during the off-season?
We do a good deal of outreach, usually hosting a LEGO robotics camp or a CAD camp, or something like that. We had big plans last summer to build three different "practice" robots, but the booster club reminded us that everything we build is made of "materials," and materials are a rare commodity that mostly can only be obtained through the movement of small, green pieces of paper, which, shockingly, do not grow on trees!
We'll also do some research. Last summer, we worked on using vision targets. The summer before that, we worked on developing a swerve drive module. We also use the summer as a time to maintain and upgrade our tools. I'm likely going to be ordering some new batteries for our laptops, and I hope to be able to spend some time focusing on figuring out how the FMS programs work, so we can do a better job going forward at our various mini-regionals. I almost had it at our Week Zero Invitational, but couldn't quite get it fully functional in time. |
