Question 11/26/00: Since kickoff is comming up, what publication or television show would you like to see cover FIRST in the following season?

Ok, I don't think FIRST could go wrong with being shown on MTV. While we work after school and on weekends building our robots, there are kids whose lives consist of making sure they see every single episode of Real World and Road Rules. Sad as it is, some people take Carson Daly's approval to be like the word of God...so if FIRST was shown in a positive light on MTV, suddenly it'd be 'cool' to build robots. So I think that way, FIRST would get more interest with a huge audience. And as to what particular show it would be on...I have no clue. :) If I had more time to watch MTV, maybe I'd be more familiar with their shows. Something that airs weekly would be nice though, and not *too* unrealistic.

Just my thoughts.

What about some foreign coverage. The more the merrier as long as they dont do their coverage with thier FAT BUTTS between the people and the front stage in Florida ' we cant see---we cant see---we cant see'

As the people from BattleBot said, Robot competition is the sport of the future. That means:

ESPN or ESPN2!!!

And of course, when any other stations report about sports, they will have to show some clips of the competitions, the result of each regional, as well as the game of the day.

I'd have to agree with Ken and say that I would like to see ESPN come back and pick us back up. I was rather dissapointed after '98 when they didn't return. And though I would rather sever a limb than watch MTV (and I apologize to those of you out there that like MTV...), it would be good exposure to the age group FIRST seeks to inspire.

Your 'sever a limb' comment reminds me of a bit from 'Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy' in which a prisoner is said to have survived a reading of the galaxy's 2nd worst poetry by resorting to eating his own leg during the recital ;-)

P.S. The galaxy's worst poetry was listed as a woman from England. One of the benefits of the Earth having been destroyed to make way for an inter-galaxy by-pass was that this woman's poetry perished with her. -- The series is very clever. Highly recommended.

OK, you guys got the TV end covered... how about publications?

TIME, Discover, and Popular Science should all do stories on FIRST. Sure, WIRED did a story on Dean, but more stories need to be done about the teams and the students involved.

There are soooooo many magazines that should cover FIRST... Machine Design or Design News used to do an article every year (from'92 to '95 or so), but then they stopped covering FIRST... Dean was even named 'engineer of the year' in one of those publications. Does anyone know why these two well-read engineering mags ceased to cover FIRST?

I'd just love to open up Newsweek and see an article about a FIRST team instead of a biased policial rant.

I got 20 bucks and a case of coke that says the writers of FIRST Magazine if there ever was to be one, would be some of the people we know here on this message board...hmmm makes ya think =)
