Michigan State Championship
Looks like the numbers are in and everyone is getting signed up for States. I didn't see a thread on MSC, so I thought I'd start one. I hope that's ok. :)
I am very happy and proud to say that this year will be the first year for Team 2611 the Jacktown Vectors to attend states. The team is pretty thrilled and we are looking forward to competing and working with everyone! |
Re: Michigan State Championship
3414, the Hackbots are pumped to make it to states for the first time as a team :D
It will be fun to see all the awesome robots out there again and hope we can do well. We do have a trick up our sleeves to make our robot even better. I have been to states before when I was mentoring a different team and it is always a fun time. Good Luck to all team participating. |
Re: Michigan State Championship
Team 3421 - Tachyon TECs is also exited to be going to the state championships. This will be our first time as a team making it to this level of competition.
I can wait to play with and against all the other awesome robots/teams that will be there. See you guys in a few days. |
Re: Michigan State Championship
It will be some great competition and it seems talent is spread across the state. The top 8 ranked teams are split down the middle for East-West representation. Michigan State Championship finals has been a good showcase of great teams bound for nationals.

Re: Michigan State Championship
Similar to what I did in previous years, I ran through 100 simulated qualification match schedules (with 12 matches per team, using the FIRST match generator).
I used each team's world rank OPR from Ed Law's spreadsheet to determine their contribution to a match. I also used the autonomous OPR, climb OPR, and teleop OPR to help calculate the standings. I calculated the results for each of the 100 simulated qualification schedules, and then looked at some statistics from the aggregate results. The following were the values that were used in the simulation Code:
OPR Teleop Auto ClimbCode:
AvgRnk MedRnk ModeRnk MinRnk MaxRnk SDRnk #1Seed Top8Code:
AvgWins MedWins ModeWins MinWins MaxWins SDWins |
Re: Michigan State Championship
Can not wait for States. This is big for our team since we're so young. Looking to build off of our State Rookie All Star Award. :)
|
Re: Michigan State Championship
I ran the actual match schedule using each teams BEST OPR so far (everyone generally brings their A game to states). Here are the predicted standings:
NOTE: I just did win/loss. I didn't do tiebreakers for auto, etc. For groups with the same number of wins, they are just sorted by team number. Code:
Team W L |
Re: Michigan State Championship
WOW! This match schedule has baked in losses for pretty much everyone!
Some of the alliances would probably do real well on Einstein, too! This is going to be intense! |

Re: Michigan State Championship
Good Grief!!!! If you watch any Ultimate Ascent this year, you need to be watching MSC!!!
First 5 matches out of the chute, ~half the participants, *BOTH* alliances averaging over 100 points! Wow. Just. Wow! |
Re: Michigan State Championship
I wish I was at this event as a spectator. I'll be peeking into the webcast... good luck to all of the great teams at this event!
|
Re: Michigan State Championship
The matches have not disappointed so far, only 1 qual match did not post a 100+ score, and that was a 96-83 score.
Looking forward to see who comes out on top after 128 qual matches |
Re: Michigan State Championship
Stream 1 has no sound, but the camera's are dynamic and its connected to the FMS. Stream 2 has sound, but it is one far away camera with no FMS scores. I would use the sound from Stream 2, but it is about 4-5 seconds behind stream 1. Any way to fix it?

Has anyone posted something like this? It shows what teams each team plays with and against in the MSC CMP Qual Schedule. Luck of the draw. |
Re: Michigan State Championship
Average winning alliance score is 143. Average losing alliance score is 102. Median alliance score is 124. Wow!

Re: Michigan State Championship
Using best OPR, the OPR prediction has been correct in 81% of the Thursday matches at MSC. (Matches with score differential of less than 5 points were considered "too close to call" and have been eliminated from the predictions.)
|
Re: Michigan State Championship
Here is why MSC is a brutal competition: in 5 consecutive qualifying matches 175, 125, 151, 120, and 156 were scored by the LOSING alliance. I feel sad for the teams that put up 175, 151, and 156 and walk away with a loss.

OPR prediction update:
After 80 matches, OPR has predicted 85.5% of the matches correctly. (Above calculation uses each team's best event OPR prior to MSC. Match predictions within 5 pts are considered too close to call and were eliminated from the winning percentage calculation. OPR is 54.5% in the "too close to call" matches.) |
Re: Michigan State Championship
Heres what the alliance could look like if the rankings were to stay the same(which is pretty close to impossible). Obviously teams scout and its not likely that the top 24 teams are 24 best robots out there to choose from.
Top 24 by rank 2054 67 2959 469 2000 245 1718 3414 2771 1189 2137 2767 2145 314 2619 1918 2851 70 573 3539 27 862 33 2612 Top 24 by OPR (alliance captians in order) 2054 469 2474 67 2000 494 1718 1189 2612 3414 862 2673 2137 2145 4384 314 33 3656 1918 4325 4130 2851 3539 2767 573 27 245 |

Attached spreadsheet is a values-only copy of the "front page" for a project I'm working on. On the left is a match schedule with predictions based on current OPR. On the right is team data, including the number of wins each team is projected to have. Also has all the OPR data for each team. Green is good, Red is not as good, pure white is the 24th team. You can switch which teams are highlighted by changing the values in column Z.
If anyone wants more or updated info, I'll be at MSC tomorrow. Just find me. |

Congratulations to 217, 3539, and 469 in winning the event! That was a really intense final match. I bet 67 is really regretting being a short full court right now. Also, can a FTA get a technical foul for standing on the pyramid? ;)

Re: Michigan State Championship
Congratulations to 469, 3539, and 217 on the victory! From watching the streams, I can tell it was hard-fought and well deserved.
Also, I loved the look of relief from 469's drive coach when the MC glossed over part of the 2010 history between 67 and 469 during the Finals team intros. I thought that was hilarious. |
Re: Michigan State Championship
Any word on who won the awards? The website doesn't seem to be updating.
EDIT: From the stream: 27, 503, 2337 are state chairman's 4810 - RAS EI - 2604 |

Event winners are 469, 3539, and 217. Rookie All-Star Award winner is 4810. Engineering Inspiration Award winner is 2604. These are the ones the get to sign up if some from the above drop from my understanding. note-some of these may be wrong, the webcast was blurry and numbers were small. |

I find it unlikely that 1717 qualified from MSC as they are from California (your #5).

Re: Michigan State Championship
33 definitely qualified, they were the first pick of the alliance 68 was on (1718's) and did better in the district season and 68 qualified. I remember there being a list of 26 on the screen and Vikes only has 24 so it's safe to say 33 qualified.
|
Re: Michigan State Championship
Yup, you guys are right. I went back and listened to the already archived webcast from FiM. 33 and 1918 have been added to my list and I'm much more confident in its accuracy now. Sorry about that. I think I skipped from 1718 to 1918 when looking at the list because they looked the same with the blur.

Other than the apparent reliability issues that showed up in the elims (see below), I am extremely satisfied with the design of our robot. Issues: - Frisbee caught in drive, bent a drive sprocket. Started throwing chains. - Ran with only 1/2 of the right side drive for a couple of matches. - Then the other half of the drive chain came off. We think the output shaft on the ball shifter was somehow getting pushed pushed in and misaligning the drive sprockets, causing the chains to come off. - Shooter jammed in the last match. Just a fluke issue that shut us down. We probably shot between 500 -1000 shots this weekend, and it jammed at the worst possible time. :( We'll get it all ready to go and hopefully make it more reliable for Champs. -Adam |
Re: Michigan State Championship
Not gonna lie, I really wanted this win bad! We had a machine and an alliance that could have done it. This entire competition was insane. I'm not sure I've ever been to an event that had this level of machines, especially in the tournament. Losing scores of 190+ are just crazy.
It was great seeing all the awesome people at the event. Coming to MSC is almost like a home coming....just way to many people to list. Thanks to all the awesome volunteers. Special thanks for Rob and Eric for taking such good care of us/our robot. You guys rock! Best FTAs in the world. Congrats to 469, 3539, and 217. I'm not sure we could have lost to any more friends than this alliance. You guys were unbelieveable. If I could have gotten my head out of out robot's drivetrain, I would have loved to see the awesome power of this alliance. I will be sure to go back and re-watch your matches. 469 - Someday, someday, we'll get another chance to play together. Hopefully, that chance comes in 2 weeks. You guys are awesome to hang with at the competition. Our teams could not have more fun together! You guys are the best robot in Michigan. 3539 - Our Troy partners. If I thought we had a shot to play together, we would have loved to try it together again. You guys really pulled it together with that auton today. Just amazing. 217 - We were hoping they would over look you. We were all set to make the pick, until #2 snatched you up. You guys were hands down the best full-back we have had this season. I was really worried when we saw that 2337 was going to have to try and push you guys out of our shooting lane. Mike and Paul - Congrats on winning together! Knowing you guys, it must have been both awesome and weird all at the same time. Congrats to 27, 503, and 2337 on the Chairman's award! You guys deserve it. To 2054 and 2337 - I'm sorry we had so many issues with the robot. It had been pretty solid up until the eliminations. This alliance had so much potential. I think we only unleashed it's full power once, in F1. 2054 - You guys were great. You really carried us there for a couple of matches. Once again our drivetrain issues (same @ WM-2011) ruin a chance to win with you guys. 2337 - So glad we could FINALLY get a chance to play with you guys. You guys played our fullback role perfectly. It's so nice to be able to get such a smart and reliable team at the 24th pick. I need some serious rest.... -Adam |
Re: Michigan State Championship
Labview!!!!
For Thurs+Fri, our cRio was having problems which was causing our auton to fry and break and our wheels to run at whack speeds which kept popping chains off. Dropped our 60Pt average to a 15Pt average. Fixed Friday night by re-flashing it... (we didn't know it was the cRIO and kept thinking it was a code issue) Cant believe it dropped our overall ranking by 10. Our team is still planning to go to nationals though. I don't want to say that we're hoping that I AM Robot can't go, but they're our best bet for dropping out due to funding. Last year we were the 3rd sub and 2 teams dropped out. (or was it one? i don't remember :\ all i know is that we didn't make it). We also didn't think that 2337 was going to even get close to getting to worlds so we tried to help them as much as possible to win Chairman's, and i was shocked when they were picked in eliminations, but they played phenomenally and deserve the spot that they got. |

Thank you 67 and 2337 for accepting our invitaion for an alliance. You were both awesome and held us up when we were having issues. That is called team work and I think we really had that going for us. But as we all knew we needed our "A" game to win and and we only were able showed it a couple of matches during eliminations. To team 67, Almost like west michigan 2011. I think we had the right alliance but it was not meant to be. To 1918 NC Gears from what I see from our drivers post you gratously you used your time out for our problem and were not able to use it when you needed it. That is GRATIOUS PROFESSIONALISM at it's best and I am sorry it worked out the way it did. We respect your team and hope to be on the same side of the window at nationals or any othe venue because you are a class act!!! to team 67, I actually felt better that it was not only us that had issues because I felt bad about our performance and our team never wants less than our "A" game for our alliance partners but it happens and you have to accept it. To 469 you guys are always awesome. My rookie year was 2010 and you guys messed with my mind with your choke hold robot. You carried us our last seeding match and I appologise for our poor performance but our shooter wheels that usually go 5-6 matches were not right after only playing one We believe you owe your alliance to play your best but sometimes your robot has issues you did not anticipate. The teams and robots this year are awesome and a lot of great teams did not get to eliminations. |

Thanks also to 2145 for picking us and 3572 for completing the alliance. It all worked out very well when things were working. You were both great to work with and tenacious fighters. I hope we get the chance to do it again sometime. Congratulations to everybody that made it to MSC, the winning & finalist alliances, all the award winners, and the teams that made it through to CMP. Thanks to all who made the event possible. What can I say that hasn't already been said a million times. MSC is an absolute riot. And to 2054 - all this idle chit-chat about getting on the same side of the glass someday is like dealing with the weather. Everybody talks about it, but nobody ever does anything about it... |
