I didn't see a team mate post ours so ...

I am unaware of previous robot names or mottoes but this years name has a story:

If you attended the Groton, CT District you know that we had a spring loaded catapult that was pulled back by a pneumatic cylinder and held in place by a 300# magnet that was mounted to a pancake cylinder to pull it from the catapult.

This magnet looked very much like the Arch Reactor. So when coming up with names for the bot we thought: "Iron Man" or "Tony Stark". Whule chewing on that one of the mentors called out "Robot Downey Jr." and we all died laughing so it stuck. We changed to 2 pneumatic cylinders to fire the catapult after Groton but the name stuck.

As many are aware, this years motto is: "truss and destroy".

And our team motto is "from the basement to beyond." Because we spent our first seven years building in a tiny room in our school's basement.

That's hilarious, guys. It was an honor for GARE-E to take the field with Robert Downey Jr. in St. Louis.

That's right, our 2014 robot was named GARE-E (Globe Acquisition and Relay Engine - Earth class). It basically came about because of how snail-like it appeared when the shooter was up and the intake tucked in starting configuration. Brain storming snail inspired names naturally led to Sponge Bob's pet snail, Gary. We then roboticized it by combining that with WALL-E and developed the acnonymn to fit the game objective. We found it quite catchy and appropriate. Lol

In the past couple years we've tried to pick robot names relating to bulls... This year, we named it BullsEye (inspiration from this cheetos commercial).

Our current motto is from a retired mentor, "Nothing's impossible if you don't know it can't be done". We're thinking of revising it especially after this season's internal events and struggles (long story) to "One for all, all for one" though.

This year we named her Persephone... which means "bringer of destruction". Some of the other students have been calling our practice robot; Hades.

I approve of the practice bot :D.

Well, Team 20's the Rocketeers... named after a sponsor who no longer sponsors us.

Our robot this year is called Eclipse... WHAT?
I don't know how that makes any sense, but if it means anything, I voted for launchpad.

I think "boxy" or "petunia" would have been more appropriate? Why petunia?
Because the method to open our catcher panels is called CatcherPanel.bloom().

Re: Robot names and Team mottos

Each year, a few days after build season ends, our team walks to Ben and Jerry's and names the robot after whoever is at the counter. This year, our robot's name is Kyle.

We sometimes use "It may not be perfect, but that's where the magic begins!" as our motto.
